[Q] Browser spell check - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need spell checking functionality in a web browser on my TF101. I need any incorrectly-spelled words in a text area that I am typing in to get highlighted by the browser in red and the ability to select from a list of suggested fixes. I have not been able to get spell checking working in any of the browsers I have installed which include the latest stock, Dolphin HD, Boat and Opera Mobile from the market. My understanding is that the functionality is available in all of those browsers except stock, but I can't seem to enable it. Can anyone help me out here? If you could let me know how to get spell check set up in any of those browsers I would appreciate it. I spent over an hour searching online for documentation on how to do it but nothing I found answered my questions. Ideally I would like to do it in Dolphin or Boat. I am on a stock TF101, no roms or mods. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've been complaining about this since the transformer was released. The problem is that all spell checking is done via the (soft) keyboards. Our hard keyboard disables the soft one, and the spell checking is broken.
You can see the spell checker settings under Settings > Language & input > Configure input methods. "Auto-Replace" ticked, yep. NEVER WORKED! cmon ASUS!
Anyone know if the TF201 spell checker works with the physical keyboard?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041502 - lists it as a problem (I think I requested it added). Which has never been fixed.

OK thanks demod_oz. So are you saying that if I disconnect the tablet from the physical keyboard and use a virtual keyboard that the spell checkers in all of these browsers will start working? Are you talking about the word suggestion feature of the soft keyboard or the feature of the browsers that underlines in red those words that are misspelled? I am really looking for the latter. I will try when I get home, I am at work now.

yeah sorry.. It's the suggestion/correction feature. Its the best you are going to get (i think!) And you only get it with no dock!

When updated to ICS, spell checking should work without being done at keyboard level.

Firefox is awesome on the transformer, but...

... what can we tweak on it to make it better?
The about:config option lists hundreds of things to play with. I'm looking for tweaks to improve memory optimization (so android does kill it so quickly) and better cache settings when using lots of tabs.

Does it still lack Flash add on in the TF?

Still no flash support, but browsing with the adblock extension makes surfing a joy
Is there an eta to add flash to firefox?
I also recommend installing the user agent addon and set it to firefox desktop to get around sites that try to force mobile versions.

No idea when flash will be out. Installing that user agent addon was one of the first things I did Now, I just want to find out how to tweak FF from the inside to see how much performance can improve.
Firefox is awesome. Probably the best browser for android tablet. Loving it with phony and ad block addons. Eat that ipad.
There's no workaround to at least get flash to play in an external player?
can you guys play embedded youtube player (using iPad useragent) at all? The HTML5 video lags on my device a lot.

Firefox, backspace, and keyboard dock
This happening to anyone else? It only seems to happen in Firefox but whenever I use the docks backspace key in Firefox, two characters are deleted instead of just one.
I don't need a signature.
Search suggestions from url bar in firefox mobile?
I like firefox mobile, but unlike the stock browser, you got get google search suggestions from the url bar. I cant seem to find an addon that will allow this. Can anyone suggest one?
I'm noticing this same issue ... while using the keyboard dock in firefox the backspace keys removes two characters.
Did you ever find a fix for this?
Yes, the backspace problem and when typing, the cursor sometimes moves backwards, so you are typing over existing text... my most hated bug!

The only time I noticed the cursor moving back it was because I was apparently accidentally hitting the touchpad and it was registering as a tap to click. So now I just mainly keep the touchpad disabled.

It's actually a known issue with FF mobile and hardware keyboards, but it only seemed to be fixed for some devices. Are you saying that in multi-line web forms, you get no typing issues?

Same issue here, but not in stock web browser. Only in firefox
Wow, I thought I was the only one, I didn't actually notice it happens only in Firefox, but now that you've mentioned it, I notice that I don't hate typying anywhere else... haha
Hehehe... so glad it's not only me and that it's only in Firefox, now there's one more reason to give dolphin a try. Too bad though, I really like the FF interface and tabs position.
I have notice the same problem, and When I'm using the "AZERTY" Dock it was recognized by Firefox as a "QWERTY" one.
This is the only application that make the mistake.

I'm not sure if I just wasn't using it enough, but I hadn't noticed that issue. I certainly do now, and it definitely isn't better with firefox 5. It does seem like it is worse in some forms than others (typing this message wasn't bad at all). I've also noticed in some forms that pressing backspace quickly several times will just delete everything.

Passwords on keyboard suggestion list

Saw this tweeted, any truth?
It shows your browser passwords on ASUS keyboard suggestion lists.

I've yet to see this happen a single time. In fact, I've not yet seen it suggest a single word that I've entered multiple times, that wasn't in the stock dictionary. That's on default settings, both on the stock firmware, and on the latest available version.
So when typing your password in the box you won't see it, i.g. ********. But will show up on keyboard suggestion.
I haven't used the default keyboard, but there is a setting in one of the honeycomb menus that lets you make your password visible vs having the **** there. Dunno if somehow having that setting to show what you type affects the keyboard recording passwords or not.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
This happens for certain text boxes or webpages. When it happens, you will see word suggestions on top of the default keyboard. This happens to me while I was trying to log onto gmail through the built-in browser. I hope there is a fix for this soon because when I'm typing my password, everyone around me can see it.
My passwords did show up in the suggestion area of the ASUS keyboard as I was typing it and thought that was a bit of an issue - think it was eBay or my web mail, but just tested it again now and it does not. I have just updated to the latest firmware so that may have included a fix. Anyone tried it who has not upgraded firmware yet?

[Q] ASUS Soft Keyboard

Anybody else realize that the ASUS custom software keyboard (not the Android vanilla keyboard) seems to have Swype-like technology built in? So psyched I accidentally just stumbled on that
Maybe thats why some people report that it is sluggish. It seems to work ok for me though I never realized it worked like swype, thanks!

It seems it doesn't work in all text fields.. doesn't seem to work in the address bar of the browser or in email address fields. But it does work in most general text boxes. People complain about the keyboard being sluggish? I feel like I haven't really experienced anything like that

Yet another browser issue

Am i the only one here suffer from checker box browsing issue? For those who don't know what it is. Is when you load a webpage they load box by box as you scroll down. Was there some setting i miss? I tried factory reset and it still doesn't solve anything. This really bug me because knowing that the TF is quite powerful in it's own way. But when using the stock browser it made it feel really cheap. Opera mobile on the other hand is way faster when rendering webpage. But since i have all my bookmark synced in the stock browser that made it my preferred browser. Just wondering if anyone else have this issue as well.
I have the same issue. I turned off opengl rendering and it fixed it, but scrolling is much less smooth.
I have the same issue, after receiving the Android 3.2 update. 3.1 was better for me. It has stated that 3.2 was suppose to fix this white box loading problem, but it caused me the problem instead. So I'm hoping the next update will fix it soon in the coming days for the U.S. on 8/23/11. 3.2 is such a buggy release.
As for how to disable OpenGL rendering? I don't think there is such option under any factory setting? Are you rooted legoman666?
to disable opengl you have to type about:config in the browser URL. Nothing will show up on the webpage. But just go back to your browser setting and the debug option is listed there. Yeah i really hope they fix this issue soon. I don't even feel like using the TF anymore because of this.

I believe I followed the instructions correctly. But I do not see the OpenGL option listed, nor a debug option within Settings on the stock browser.
lol my bad i mean type about:debug then go to setting. You should see the debug option. Sorry been using a couples other browser and got the command mixed up. Disabling openGL will cause some issue when loading webpage with flash.
this is such a huge annoyance I wonder why you don't see more complaints? Its buggingthe hell out of me!
I use Opera Browser and get nearly zero blockiness, however it is about time Asus got off their ass and fixed this issue once and for all!
Does opera work with flash?
And yes Asus needs to address this issue big time since most users are on the web 90% of the time!

Yes flash works fine on Opera.
yeah i'm no longer using the stock browser. Switched to opera and so much faster. Just wish mouse scrolling work with it hehe. I can't believe we need to rely on third party software to enjoy web surfing. I thought tablet are meant for web surfing. Surely this is not the case with the TF stock browser.
Lets just admit the TF is a pretty good device. Except for the stock browser. The longer I use it the more I hate it. I honestly don't know why I keep using it other than it's familiar. Maybe if someone just removed it from the rom I would be forced to use something else
I agree. The device itself is awsome. I love playing old school emulator games using my ps3 controller. But when i want to surf the web. I tend to move to my desktop for that job. Hell even my samsung galaxy s does a better job. That's how much the stock browser had turned me off and not to mention when i want to post here. The keyboard lag is ridiculous. Can't surf and can't type. Definitely a pretty damn let down for a dual core device.
i sent a complaint to Asus. Lets see if we get a responce!

well Asus steered me back to Google for the issue! I filed a bug report on Google this time!
Hahaha thanks markimar for getting on their ass about this issue. Hope we get a solution for this problem soon.

Choppy browser
Ok so from what I read the checker box browsing, slow keyboard typing and all are not exclusive to my device. I got my TF a week back and I tried different browsers (Stock, Dolphin, Opera) and on different roms (Prime and Revolver) and all were choppy like hell.
it was worst in case of facebook and endgadget pages which are quite long pages and what I saw was plain dissapointing, slow, checker boxes and the fact that it keep loading the whole page if I scroll up and down or zoom in and out!
Edit: ok so idid the "open gl rendering" uncheck and now the stock browser doesnt do checker box and its quite ok,could be smoother but its wayyyy better than before!

[Q] Massive keyboard lag with Dolphin browser

Hi guys, I'm posting this here as I can't seem to find anyone with the same problems as me and I am hoping someone here can help me.
Everytime I run Dolphin Browser (ver. 9.3.1), there is a MASSIVE keyboard lag whenever I want to enter anything in the address bar. The keyboard will only show up after a few seconds (ranging from 1-4 seconds) and when I enter the address, some alphabet inputs will be missing as it was not registered by Dolphin due to the lag. So for example, if I entered yahoo.com, only yo.com will be registered on the address bar, eventhough I typed yahoo.com.
General speed of loading the websites is not affected and is quite fast. It's only when there is a keyboard input involved, then it lags like hell.
I have tried tweaking my Infinity with System Tuner Pro to increase the memory limit of Dolphin browser but it doesn't seem to work. I also have Browser2Ram (as part of Cleanrom inheritance 3.3) but nothing seems to work.
Searching for similar problems faced by other owners of Inifinity also turned up empty so I hope someone can help me on this.
I have a rooted Asus TF700 running on Cleanrom inheritance 3.3 ODEX version, but I also experienced this problem when I was running my TF700 unrooted.
Please help! It's driving me crazy as I'm a big Dolphin fan!
Thanks a bunch!

Well i'm facing the same on stock. So i guess its time to write to asus.
I have the same issue with Dolphin as well. I've had it stock and also with CROMI. I have switched to the stock browser which, with CROMI, is so lightning quick and lag free. I also like Dolphin, and still use it for some websites that work better with it or I need Dolphin's add-ons for, but mainly, I use stock and am very happy.
But, no, you are not alone with Dolphin lagging badly with our device.
Perfect on my S3. It is exactly as you say on my tf700.

Odp: [Q] Massive keyboard lag with Dolphin browser
Finally someone else has the same problem as me. This is my #1 issue with everyday use of Infinity. Yes, I could switch to Boat or other brower. But I got used to Dolphin interface.
I wrote about the problem to Dolphin developers twice. They acknowledged it but did nothing about it.
The lag is probably related to the way they programmed Google search suggestions. Try disabling suggestions from Google in Dolphin preferences, the lag will be almost done. All other suggestions (history, bookmarks) will also be disabled.
The problems seems to be as follows. You type a letter. Dolphin looks for search suggestions, displays them, then reads another key, and so on. If many keys are in the buffer, it gets slower and slower. If you type really fast, the keyboard buffer overfills and some keystrokes are lost.
If you use onscreen keyboard, this problem does not occur. With the keyboard dock, you usually type faster. Passing the keystrokes through USB may also account to this. Correct me if I'm wrong.
To sum up: everyone who has this problem, please send a report to Dolphin developers (they have form on their web page). Maybe if more people will report, they will finally do something about it.
I would strongly suggest you guys to use stock. Its almost bug free and also fast enough. On mine it displays the content faster than dolphin and the page load is faster than dolphin. I have timed the loading of all the websites i frequently visit( yes I cleared all history, cache, etc. and also disabled pre loading) and dolphin took almost 5-10 seconds more than the stock browser to load up the pages. You can even try chrome. Its good after the latest update. I didn't try timing it but its better the previous version.
It has been brought up before that Dolphin is less optimized for tablets than it is for the smart phones. Might not be entirely the problem with the device.
