If you look at the image above, my sgy-data (fat32) partition totals 843.8MB but the system reports 928.4MB used. Where did the 84.6MB go? Now that's ignorable…
But for my sgy-ext (ext3) partition that is linkd with link2sd, the total size of all the files is 246.7MB but the system reports 686.6MB used. A total of 439.9MB is missing! And that is not ignorable anymore.
In fact, if you look at the second image, according to link2sd, my sgy-ext partition is using up 601MB (as compared to 686.6MB reported by Linux, a difference of 85.6MB still in the range of 'ignorable' missing space).
(IMG tag doesn't seem to work so see this link instead) https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-...Kh4pphYo/s800/possible%20Android%20bug-02.png
My questions are:
1) What's happening? and Why?
2) What's with Android OS as compared to Linux? Or putting it another way, why can't Linux see what Android 'supposedly' sees? Assuming that Android is seeing something that Linux can't, which could explain the missing MBs.
3) If it isn't normal at all, what is the best way to reclaim those missing MBs without resetting and starting from scratch? This is like the last resort if all else fails (although I don't mind since for some weird reason, everytime I plug-in my SGY to Linux, it reboots automatically).
Other info:
1) Using stock ROM
2) Using LA1
3) Samsung Galaxy Y
4) Rooted
5) I use Link2SD
6) regular SD card partition is FAT32
7) SD card partition for Link2SD is ext3
8) and a little bit of story, see next:
I rebooted after installing an app yesterday, and for some weird reason all of the installed apps that exists in Link2SD partition disappeared even though the said partition was mounted properly. I checked Link2SD and yes, it was mounted at boot, Link2SD can read the said partition. However, this is where it starts to get weird - Link2SD can not see any of the apps.
When I check the storage via Link2SD's, it reports that I have "used" space in the partition. True enough, the apps were not deleted, it was just that, Link2SD or maybe the phone itself failed to read those apps. Could this be a Link2SD bug and not Android related?
I tried rebooting, remounting, soft restart, all to no avail. I ended up reinstalling everything. Then trying the relink lib and relink cache. Some successfully relinked, the rest did not.
Then rebooted to see if anything changed. Works fine. However nothing changed. Finally I cleared the "trash", those files that lost its connection to its respective apps (via Link2SD's options). Nope nothing, because as Link2SD reported, these trash files have a total of 0kB! All empty files.
I rebooted once more. And then the problem repeated again. Then I rebooted again, and the problem stopped… finally.
However, the missing space are still there.
As you can see in my screenshots above, I have "all hidden files shown" enabled. The total size of all files is too low compared to the "used" size, which I can not reconcile anyway I looked at it.
And that's where I need help or an explanation… Android, Link2SD, possible bug?
Or is this another case of base-10 and base-2 space naming? My Linux OS uses base-10, is Android and Link2SD using base-2? (ie MB vs. MiB)
Thank you very much.
Same Problem have you found a solution?
I am having this same problem now... except I'm missing 1.90GB after a botched install and i know it's there on the sd cause link2sd is showing that it's being used even though I haven't linked anything to it yet after a fresh install of everything even wiping my sd and recreating the fat32 and the ext2 the missing GB are still gone.
Has anyone figured out what is happening or how we can get it back?

Hi folks.
i just flashed my g1 from jf 1.43h to jf rc9 but i can't get the market running.
when i start it, it either closes immediately or tries to load the license agreement and then closes before i can press anything.
i went 1.43 - wipe - rc9 - rc9(bcs someone mentioned that he solved the latitude problem with installing again) - wipe.
any suggestions?
greetings,
hg
edit:
can't open the browser either, wth is wrong there?
don't have any problems with rc9 JF. Must be something else
I got this as well, a little digging with logcat told me what was wrong for me
1. I still had my 1gb "for flashing only" micro sd in and had moved my market to the now-removed 16gb micro sd
2. The sqlite db was corrupt, deleting my app cache (which took a while because it was huge) got the market app up and running again
However I'm not seeing paid apps at all
Don't have any of those problems, but as with the poster above I cannot see any of the paid apps. Shame

logcat just says that the process has died, is there anything specific i could look for?
regarding 2., do you mean "delete data" in the application menu?
if so, didn't help :/
and i found out that i can't read/write emails, i can open googlemail and see my emails but when i try to open one or write a new one, i see the googlemail screen again. that makes 3 of the most important programs not working, market, browser and gmail..
I went into the cache directory as root and did "rm *"
pervious to your upgrade had you moved your app caches? because it really sounds like that is the problem

tried that, gives me a "lost+found is not empty".
cd'ed in, rm *, cd .., rm -rf lost+found, "l+f is not empty"...
and no, i never moved my app cache :/
update:
wiped, flashed rc8(browser/market working fine), flashed rc9, tried - not working, wiped, tried - not working..
did a little logcat > logcat.txt, complete version(minus my email adress) is here:
http://cxg.de/?id=uctysaTAVLWvzZm
interesting parts(where i started the browser and market) are here:

this is so frustrating, i have no idea what i've done wrong or what i can do to fix it
edit:
damn, sorry for the bump, wanted to do an edit.. it's getting late
Help! Me Too, I was on Cyan and switched to Super D, and somewhere along the way I lost Browser and Market, FC all the time, whether I switch back to either, and flashed spl and radio again, wiping over and over. Is there a way to re-install these or revert the phone to stock from here? Everything else works fine, so it sucks that I have no browser.

Dude, do you even know what RC9 or who JF is?
dude - why the hell would you resurect a dead thread? one that died in peace 11 months ago
u sure you are wiping in the right order?
wipe the dalvik cache (or just reformat the ext partition), flash HTC 1.6, wipe, flash CM
Thread closed....so not to be resurrected again
So as I went to update Facebook this morning, my phone alerted me I had insufficient storage. Apparently 9 gigs of "other" files are taking up a bunch of space yet I cannot find them, even with showing hidden files. I don't wanna just go deleting files that I'm unsure of. Any ideas?

What rom are you on? If you've just recently moved to TW 4.3 or AOSP 4.2/4.3/4.4 then all of your TW 4.1.2 data is in /data/media. Pics, music, videos, nandroid backups are the biggest folders usually.

Well, if its not either of those three big names from my last post then you should backup any important data then wipe internal storage.
Get SD Maid from the play store. I use it to find duplicates, ghost files, and other stuff worthy if deletion.
Sent from my Last Ever Samsung Device.
I had a very similar question lately:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2610663
I was missing >50% or my 32gb storage to unknown/other. I tried everything on the market, used computer to delete data, file analysis, nothing helped.
I am running CM10.2 and used the CM setting's app to perform a factory reset (the clockworkmod factory reset does not remove all user data). Apparently this formats your data area, and in my case eliminated the unknown wasted space.
my phone can't see its internal storage, though the data is still there. I'm running tin latest developer preview, flashed clean and rooted with code blue. everything was fine, but I dirty flashed xtra smooth 1.5 and then reverted to my stock rooted backup a day later because of battery issues. since then I cannot download any file from the browser, it starts and then says unsuccessful after a second, and I also can't download a file from my google drive. play store works fine however. if I open the aosp gallery the folders for my internal storage images (camera, instagram, vsco, downloaded, etc.) just show as blank, with pictures saying "no thumbnail available." however, videos show blank as well but have the play button, and if I hit it the file will play normally, and if I attach one of the blank images to something like hangouts or an email they will show up. if I try to the back up function of any apps that offer it, like my alarm clock or pedometer it fails. though they can see the old file is there and restore from it. lastly, file explorer programs show my sdcard folder to be empty, though they are obviously not. I generally use es, but have tried several others with the same result. if I view it via twrps file explorer in recovery things are normal. any help?
Read the /sdcard sticky in general
thanks, it is a great sticky, but after reading it i dont see any solution/reference to my problem. the issue is not that data is deleted or corrupt or anything along those lines, it is that my phone- when booted into android- is not seeing my files. the data is there, but something is wrong and i cannot see them. for clarification, its not just /sdcard that is showing as empty in file explorers, /data, /storage and many others are showing empty too, though not everything as folders like /sys and /system are showing up as normal.
Mine is doing the exact same thing and is blowing my mind, it knows the folders are there, it says I have 7 GB full but the folder is emptey in any file explorer
heres the error i get when trying to download a podcast, i get a similar EACCESS permission denied error when trying to back up an app, but like i said, if the app already has a backup on the storage i can restore it no problem

It's like there is something disabling it from being seen by the system
I had a similar issue, doing this resolved it:
adb shell
su
restorecon -FR /data/media/0

Thanks bro! This fixed my SD issues!!
[Q]Tried possible fixes still "Error dwnloding app frm mrket.Insufficient space..."
Fixed the problem by reflashing the Stock Firmware. No idea what was causing the problem.
If you are facing the same problem, read it (what "Dark3n" suggested ) before proceeding for a reflash.
Hi guys, the Infamous "Error downloading app from market. There is insufficient space on the device."problem is back to haunt.I am unable to find a solution even after an intensive research and troubleshooting
When I am trying to install the applications from the Google Play Store, I am getting this error.
"Error while downloading <application_name>. There is insufficient space on the device"

While I have sufficient space (500 MB) in the internal memory.I can’t even install the small apps like Root Checker.ASUS apps are also not getting installed.
I have faced the same error in the past on my previous devices but that got resolved after wiping the cache partiton via CWM Recovery. But this time the problem is so persistent.
Things I have tried :
>Cleared cache using Clean Master and CacheMate.
1.Checked and if there's any “ .odex file” in “/data/app”.NO .odex file there.
2.Wiped cache partition via recovery.
3.Force Stopped “Google Play Store” and “Google Services”.Cleared “Data” and “Cache”
4.Force Stopped “Google Play Store” and “Google Services”.Cleared “Data” and “Cache” and uninstalled “Updates”.
5.Stop the market app. Then clear the cache from inside the task manager according to this post.
This error is annoying the crap outta me and I am at my wits end on this one.
P.S. Yes,I know,I can use "FolderMount" OR use "Link2SD" to link the apps to SDCard,I just don’t understand the point of wasting 500 MB space. That’s beyond comprehension.
[Asus Zenfone5 A501CG] [Rooted] [Android : 4.4.2] [Build :ASUS_T00J_WW_user_2.21.40.44] [Stock Recovery]
(Updated to 2.21.40.44 via OTA.Do I need to "Factory Reset" my device ?)
Ever faced the same issue ? Any clues ?
Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you!!
Could be a permission issue, or preexisting files that fail to be overwritten.
Try SD Maids CorpseFinder and enable all extra filters in the settings, that should find issues with preexisting files.
Make sure that you have enough space specifically on /data/data.
If you can record the failed install in a logcat there might be more specific information.

Thanks for the response buddy.I had already fixed the problem by flashing latest firmware by the time I checked your post.
You are right, that could be a permission.I have been using SD Maid for a long time and no doubt it's such a wonderful must have utility, unfortunately I didn't think about the preexisting files Anyway,it might be useful for othere users.
Thanks again for your support and developing such a wonderful app
Really appreciate that.

Hi all,
I'm going to make a long story short and say that my brother's phone has a cracked screen, so I tried to use TWRP to backup everything through ADB. But googling SM-J530F TWRP brings 'j5lte' as one of the first results, I went and flashed it under the wrong assumption that j5lte was SM-J530F's code name (it was not) and that caused severe bootloops.
I flashed correct TWRP, but USERDATA would not mount. I panicked and the crystal bleeding was progressing fast, so I pulled the entire mmcblk0 to dump a raw image of the phone's NAND.
This was the right move, as the phone is completely dead now. Crystal bleeding has made the screen completely dead, but the phone still works.
All I'm left with is the raw NAND backup.
The first thing I did was inspect the image with fdisk. It can recognize the GPT partition table and structure. The USERDATA partition is at the very end.

GDISK is also recognizing it no problem. It seems like the partition table is in good condition:
GPARTED is also recognizing partitions, but it does not look good:
Looking at more information:
For the record, e2fsprogs is installed. It's always installed by default. GPARTED here is complaining about the superblock, but I can see that its looking to open the partition through /dev/loop0p24 which is no good. The kpartx tool is giving me access to all the partitions of the image through /dev/mapper/loop0p24, so that explains the errors.
Superblocks seem to be present in USERDATA:
I tried mounting the partition with a backup superblock, but...
I was at a loss at this point, so I tried mounting the SYSTEM partition just to see what happens and... it worked?
This proves what I said: This partition is fine, GPARTED was complaining simply because its trying to target them through the wrong device path.
But this raised the question: What the heck is wrong with the USERDATA partition? Why is it ext2 (Isn't that SUPER old?) and could it be that its not corrupted at all, and I'm just trying to mount it the wrong way or something? TWRP couldn't mount it though (Why?).
Being at a loss, I tried repairing the ext2 USERDATA partition using `fsck.ext2 /dev/mapper/loop0p24` and it found so many errors (including a corrupted journal) the file I redirected stdout to (console output) ended up being 78MB. Here it is if you want it (obviously can't post here).
So anybody knows what I can do? Is there any hope? I'm positive that the recovery image couldn't have corrupted the USERDATA partition (How could it? I still can't find a possible explanation). And even if it did, it couldn't overwrite the files. The file data should STILL be in that partition completely in-tact (There's NO WAY the recovery image overwrote them) though the journal is gone, so I can't use a tool like extundelete to recover them.
I tried to flash the phone with a stock rom through download mode to reconstruct everything with a healthy structure. This was so I could flash TWRP again and pull another NAND raw dump to have as a healthy reference I could use, but this doesn't work. Odin fails and I don't know why because the screen on the phone is dead.
Is there some place where I could get this maybe?
Is there something you can suggest I do?
Thanks!
