[Q] You just Bought a G2x for your wife - do you ROM it or Stock it? - T-Mobile LG G2x

I think the title sums it up.
THANK YOU !

Rom, unless she uses it so little it doesn't matter. The same goes for anyone, really. If they don't know what custom roms are, they don't need them.

Good answer.
I say the same.

I disagree, do you want to give her some P.O.S. that hardly functions or a piece of gold that will eat the soul of most any phone that comes near it?
Here was my experience on stock:
First problem was vibrate not functioning correctly, second was touch screen being stupidly non-responsive, to the point I couldn't zoom in the browser, third, it was as ugly as some irradiated inbred cannibal.
Give her CM7, with a 1.1GHz battery life kernel and find a suitable theme for it.

appreciate your responses!
Will go ROM based on your answers.
Now it's just matter of finding one that most of all is stable....

I have used that one for a while. Many bugs in my experience. Then pure ported one, still behaved odd.
I think some forum members said that Eaglesblood is rock-solid.

I've been off it since the ICS Alpha, but the Euroskank Nightlies worked great for me. I'd load one, get it set up and play with it and make sure it's running good. I've noticed people making comments about stuff being broken in the newer CM releases, and since the Euroskank's are kangs those features may also be broken.

My gf has a g2x. Its romed with cm9 kang ics. Take a look.

Yeah, use Eaglesblood 2.3.7 cm based, and use morfic's ELP kernel and use the CM performance settings to set it to 750 mhz and set at boot. Will give amazing stability and speed, plus battery life for days if she's a light user. If she's a heavy user (games, etc...) set it to 1100 mhz.

Whatever you may use, either of the ROMs have their own qualities and defects. But one thing I have noticed: when using Rom Mannager app the battery gets emptied quicker. The difference might be of 2-3hours/day.

I have heard this to be true with Titanium Backup as well; restoring apps makes it drain faster. Who knows if it's really true or not?! but some say that they feel this is the case...
I do it all manually. Takes more time, but I just got to know it's all correct. OCD!

If you use an app like Set CPU you will notice that it automatically adjusts the clock frequency depending on what you're doing. So, if you doing an operation like a huge restore, yea it's going to use some battery.

I tried several ROMs, attempting to get past the lockups, reboots, etc. EaglesBlood's was the most stable that I tried; Weapon's worked well at the start but started into the reboot cycle after about a week. With the EB ROM I rarely had problems.

if u want a flawless stable rom flash hellfire phoenix 1.9

I would stick with what you have for a short while longer.
UCLA 2.3.6 update just hit, so lots of ROM's will go through wipe-only updates and new ROM's will be released.
SkyICS is the flashiest, coolest ROM IMO that still manages to be stable and quick.
RedSonja is a bit more blah (aside from cartoons) with the theme and tricks/gimmicks/addons, but looks like it was just rebuilt for UCLA 2.3.6 update. So if you have to flash something, that is the one I'd try right now.
I'm digging NexusM0D 3.0 after trying a couple of different ICS-Themed ROM's.

2 much to Choose
I like the stability of SkyIce 7.4 Lots of eye candy. Right now using StokMod-2-UCLA3, hoping that ICS will be released soon. I Wipe about once a week just for the variety. Only Bricked the SkyRocket i727 once before the 30 days was up.
Wish I would have waited for the note.
Personally I prefer the Tmob roms. The ones here feel pretty much all the same to me too imo. There are some pretty interesting ones over there like Tuesday, Juggs and ParadoxII. Really nice themes and features too. You just need to flash our kernel or else your rotation is all outta wack. I find there is more action over there. Although the roms we do have might be less original they are pretty rock solid.(props to our devs) The only downside to the Tmob is you lose the LTE icon (still getting the speeds just no icon changing) which I couldnt care less

I did a clean install of Weapon. Rebooted and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rebooted again and let it sit. Then I flash New Clip and let it sit for a bit. New Clip flashes over Weapon. Then I flashed my favorite theme. Stayed with the kernel that comes with it. I have never had great luck with alternative kernels and I really have no need for overclocking.
Kwes has an ICS like theme that looks great. Then I added ADW ex and loaded an ICS theme for it. I am very happy with the setup. Been running it this way for several months.
I have been playing around with the V6 Super Charger script but for whatever reason I seem to run out of memory faster when web surfing. I am still learning about everything it does, so I am not 100% sure that it is set up correctly for my needs.

When find one that works, I stick with it, and it's looking like I'll be with this one for a while. Maybe when an ICS ROM gets refined, I'll give it a go. I would like to have Chrome on the android.

CM9 or AOKP?

what do u use and with what kernel? and what is the best set up?
You can't have other people choosing for you! lol everyone will have their opinions and liking towards different roms. I personally go for CM9 + InstigatorX's kernels. Some people go for AOKP or Chimaira other AOSP based and use Instigator's kernels. From there you have to choose which version or which governer is to your liking, if you prefer a certain setting like performance ones or power saving ones etc...
As for CM9 and AOKP I am an avid CM9 user but have used AOKP before. AOKP has a lot of customization right out of the box, CM9 is going from the ground up so they add features slowly and is constantly update almost once a day. AOKP they release one update every say 10-15 days~ and occasional milestone which will have more features than fixes. I like seeing updates gradually come and look forward to them on a daily bases thats why I stuck with CM9 and I like it for its stability. I've had a few FC's on the older AOKP but those are probably gone now with the latest milestone but features and readily available tweaks, the unicorn has them all (AOKP). I would personally make a nandroid back up and test them out yourself to see if its to your liking. My preference may not be the same as yours so its each to their own. :good:
Thanks for the reply bro, just wondering what the peeps on here were using, I think I'm going to stick with cm9, I really dig it, but I was wondering what kernel should I add, its a big mess with a bunch of releases on that forum lol

More 'features' in 4.0. But it may bootloop you. If you're ok with dealing with that then 4.0. I myself am trying to decide and I don't want to deal with bootloops so I just, right this second, decided to go with 2.2.1

I would go with 4.0. I was having trouble with my phone looping when I put on UCLF6 modem, I switched to the newest kernel and everythings been smoother. I would also say don't be afraid to try things out. Usually you will know what you like and don't like after you test a few configurations.
Just backup and keep multiple versions of the kernel in your SD so you can switch just in case it fails to boot. I'm currently using 4.0 badass underclocked to 1.1ghz when idling/light use and use smartassv2 when I play games.

Just backup and keep multiple versions of the kernel in your SD so you can switch just in case it fails to boot. I'm currently using 4.0 badass underclocked to 1.1ghz when idling/light use and use smartassv2 when I play games.

I get 6-8 hrs but I am a heavy user. I get about 2 hrs 15 min screen time.
This has been the same for every Rom I have ever had though.
CM9 with InstigatorX 4.0 kernal. Runs smoothly and excellent battery life

I use Chimera RC2 and it is amazing with InstigatorX kernel. Had some trouble getting it to run at first but finally got it to run. As for setup, I prefer performance so I am working on getting it to stabilize with 1.7-1.8 OC. I am still testing governors and UV settings but SmartassV2 benchmarked pretty damn high compared to badass and ondemand.
RC3-(Official?) should correct issues and may be released today

For those having battery life issues here are some UV settings that I posted up in InstigatorX's thread. They have been stable for the past 36 hours.

In my humble opinion, CM9 tends to be a touch more stable than AOKP. But remember AOKP at its essence is CM9 with extra features thrown on, so it's bound to have the potential for a few more bugs. But both are very stable and won't give you any more issues than any other ROM really. Basically it's a question if AOKP's features are something you feel you want. I recommend spending about a week with both and then deciding.
Where can I get an stable official aokp download? I can't find it anywhere!!!! So annoying

No such thing as of yet. AOKP is based of cm, and that's not stable yet either.... that being said, this is pretty close:

[Q] stable ROM with good battery life?

So my wife has an LG G2X on stock android 2.3.4 and she complains that after a while it will move so slowly that it is almost unusable. I have told her to restart the phone whenever that happens and she is having to do that about once a week, but that clears up the problem for a while. Aside from that, everything works as it should. It is using the march 2012 baseband.
Since it is not my phone, I do not know exactly what all she is doing on her phone, but I assume it is mostly facebook, watching videos, texting, and calls. I'm looking for a stable ROM where everything works like stock and has at least the same (if not better) battery life as stock.
And yes, I have searched but a lot of the info seems outdated. I am thinking that I might just run a rooted stock ROM with a custom kernel (leaning towards faux's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102720 )... or maybe the stable cm-7.2.0-p999
summary: wife's G2X becomes VERY laggy after ~1 week use, suggest a fix
thanks :good:
Having to restart once a week is not problem, if anything that's a good thing lol. I had to restart my stock unrooted g2x multiple times a week.......if you move to a custom rom your wife will probably have to restart about the same if not more. I'm on cm7 and i restart about once a day just because i like to, not out of necessity. If your wife isn't huge into customization than a stock rooted rom will work just fine. Faux makes a great kernel but it was a little harsher on battery for my liking. I'm running Trinity oc right now and love it. If i were you, i would look at mazouts latest kernel build. He makes AWESOME kernels and ill be moving over to his latest release whenever it comes out tonight or tomorrow.

i had her on a cm7 build with her previous phone (motorola defy) and she seemed to like it OK. didn't customize it too much, just used all the default settings.
after i posted this thread, i actually started to look at, and downloaded mazout's kernel... so now i'm thinking of trying out the 3/1 "nightly" build of cm7 with mazout's 0323 kernel. i can't seem to find a known bugs list for cm7 on this phone. are there any known bugs?
does this build of cm7 have a "restart" option in the power menu? that is one of my pet peeves with the stock ROM. the only way i have found to restart the phone is to "power off" and then "power on". i think she would be more willing to restart the phone if it was an automated restart
Yes there is aa "reboot" option that comes up from holding the power button. Maz's 0323oc kernel is awesome. I wouldn't put the Max over 1015 and keep the minimum at 216. Known bugs.....for me the only bug i had was the phone would heat up pretty bad overnight while charging. It was instantly fixed by going into my development settings under applications and selecting the "keep awake" option while charging.

ive actually been having surprisingly good luck running hellfire rom compared to when i was running CM7, its been stable for almost a week now, battery life isnt as good, but much better then stock.
Whaaaat? Hellfire is tweaked out isn't it? Looks like a badass looking rom, just too comfortable with vanilla cm7

If you want to stay with stock just root it and install an app to give yourself access to either full reboot or a quick warm reboot from the home screen.
Rebooting is a necessary evil

now there's an idea. i didn't think about that. do you know of any of those types of apps that you could suggest?
I have the app Reboot Scheduler. It reboots my phone at 5 am so in the morning it's nice and fast.

Just search for reboot in play store.

threw "fast reboot" on there to see how she likes it since it doesn't require root, works more like an app killer, but kills all in one press.
now, would i see any noticeable gains by using a custom kernel (stock voltage, no overclock)?

Yes, not an extreme amount but a definite yes. I know by experience with CM7 that mazout's stock voltage beta kernel was much better than the stock CM7 kernel. Those kernels are only for CM7 though. I do not have any experience with an upgraded kernel on my g2x while it was stock as I flashed CM7 and mazouts kernel right after.

^ those stats are kind of irrelevant considering he's asking for a decent play out on battery while using performance. [All around use.] You just showed us what a phone with no data signals and almost no use other then the odd screen wake [possibly texts/calls] the op explained he needed a ROM that takes minimal battery with most use, and being a girl I would imagine she's using social networking which requires WiFi or 3G/4G Please don't take what I'm saying as offensive, your information is very handy however it steers the op in the wrong direction as I'm sure his wife likes to use her phone as much as possible without being stuck to a charger. My girlfriend is currently using my old g2x and so far we've had the best luck with cm7 stable and the trinity kernel with slight under volt. What I would suggest the op do is maybe take a little research nightly on her battery drain, find out what she's using the most and go from there. Unfortunately because its not HIS phone, he's not going to witness distinction first hand and won't be able come to a easy conclusion, and it doesn't help that the g2x devs are stuck on GB, too many ports to keep interest and the search could take forever.
LETS KEEP PRAYING TMOBILE HASNT FORGOT US!
PS spawne32, when you did have your phone like the picture did that include battery apps or task killers? Or just straight up OS? Whenever I tried the ROM you suggested [it has been a while, maybe since updated.] I get screen wake issues and all kinds of battery drain.

To the op, also recommend to your wife the app called "screen filter" it has an option to lower the key brightness, there are a few of those apps out there but I only remember using that, one of the g2x sad but true battery drainers.

Similar issue - frequent reboots - please suggest ROMs, kernels, other solutions!
I have an LG Optimus G2X (P-999) running the original, unrooted, stock OS (android 2.3.4 "gingerbread", with the "old" bootloader and the baseband from March 2012).
Similar to the OP's wife's phone, mine is running slower and slower, frequently locks up, sometimes so badly that I need to remove the battery to restart it, and sometimes it just restarts itself. I've already tried uninstalling unused apps, clearing caches, moving apps to the SD card, etc. None of that seemed to noticeably help, and lately I need to restart it at least once every 24 hours.
(There are other annoyances too, like the way the GPS hangs and drops, and the battery life isn't great - although the battery may just be too old.)
I'm planning to root it and uninstall the bloatware as a first step, using the instructions I found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050534
Then, I'm considering installing a custom ROM and/or kernel. (Most up-to-date list, I believe, is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975934 )
Given the problems I'm having, do you think one or both will help? (If yes, do you have any specific recommendations for a ROM and/or kernel, or tips, or possible pitfalls I should avoid?) Are there other ideas I should consider?
Thanks in advance!
