[Q] [i9020T] Unable to mount the internal sd from recovery - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I did google and tried some tricks for a while, here's the problem:
When tried reach /sdcard from recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.2-crespo, it just said:

The weird thing is that I've read a post said "fast oem lock, fast oem unlock" will do the trick. So my bootloader is locked again. But "fastboot oem unlock" said "Erase Failed"
Btw, I've tried [APP] Linux Tool for Bricked Nexus S after firmware update and don't know how to do with it ("Injection Failed" in bootloader and recovery screen).
I'm on a archlinux box, please help me. Thank you.

..

Hi,
Thank you for the reply. Will try to flash the bootloader and the hairdryer thing when come back home.
Btw, I flash the recovery back to recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo with adb in recovery mode:
adb push recovery-new.img /sdcard/recovery-new.img
adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-new.img
Click to collapse
Hope this may help someone else. (The /sdcard there is not the "real" sdcard, it's a folder or mount point.)

..

Ok, I flashed the bootloader from recovery, still "erase fail" when "fastboot oem unlock".
I tried to flash all *.img found in stock rom .zip file, and push the /system (no idea what I was doing...). No miracle happened.
I'm not sure about the "flash-chip" and "parted" you mentioned, but I'll try it, thank you.
-.-.- Updated 2012.4.30 -.-.-
For those still interesting: I bring the phone to a local repair store. The guy changed the chip, and boot the phone with success. But after the reboot, the screen freeze come again... (THE END)

I bought a CN version, but now try to change to WW version.
But when I try to change the firmware to WW, then I have a error .

the TF101 is already rooted.
Any idea how to fix that.
thanks
Are you trying to flash it from the CWM?
Use at your own peril! You have been warned!
You'll need adb on your computer and your TF in CWM recovery. Type in your PC terminal:
adb shell
that will put you in a shell. type the following:
mkdir /staging
mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p4 /staging
exit
flash your zip in recovery
after it finishes flashing, reboot and the blob should flash
In the mount command, the last three characters are zero p 4.
The blob flashing command looks for /staging partition or ...0p4. It copies the blob there and the TF is set up to flash whatever is in 0p4 when it starts up. /staging is not mounted in CWM, so we are just helping it along.
I have problem for the MTD device install, when connect to win7.
it said the device cannot start . so, when run the adb shell command, it said no device connect
If you are using my CWM recovery 3.2.0.1 you should be able to mount /staging from the mounts and storage menu. Just do this before flashing the update.

[Q] Phone won't boot

Hi,
Just recently changed my phone from Desire to Desire S. I rooted and S-Off'ed using Revolutionary. Everything was fine for the last day. Phone is still new so wanted to run the battery down till flat then recharge fully to calibrate it.
Turned my phone on this morning and it just stays at the white HTC logo screen. Tried to boot into 4ext recovery and it start loading up. It then reads system 0 cache 0 and the recovery crashes.
Tried to use factory reset option from bootloader and it freezes. Had to pull battery.
Tried to wipe everything using Fastboot commander. Fails erasing cache, sytem, etc.
What do I do now?
It was working fine yesterday even rebooted it a couple of times and it was fine. But can't get it to do anything this morning.

Please help.
Thanks
What I would do is to go to HBOOT and flash new Clockworkmod (or any other recovery tool) from the Android Flasher.
Android Flasher: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638
CWM: http://downloads.saga-lbc-mod.de/recovery-images/PG88IMG-RECOVERYIMG-3.2.0.0.zip
Just connect the phone to PC via USB and start Android Flasher (while in HBOOT). Click recovery and choose unzipped recovery.img (from the PG88IMG file). If your new recovery is working just mount USB storage (in recovery), put some ROM there and install zip from sdcard.
I guess you can try to fix this differently, but this is the fastest method if you don't know what exactly is wrong.
Thanks for the quick reply.
It didn't work. Android Flasher crashes. Just says not responding.
Any other ideas?
I also get these errors in recovery:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
Is my eMMC dead? Don't understand what its all about.
Is it fixable?
Thanks

Seriously, a quick look in the general's section will land you to the correct guide about it:
[GUIDE] Possible FIX for the infamous eMMC problem..
Note: I INTENTIONALLY did not link the guide so YOU will be searching for it.
Check the guide on my sig first.
I did follow all the instructions in the guide. Can't even get adb to recognise my device.
Fastboot freezes whenever I use any commands.
Can't flash anything.
I have been through a similar prblem recently. Ensure you're in recovery to utilise the adb shell (this flummoxed me for hrs lol)
If it's emmc related try the following to verify whether the chip is defective.
Ensure you are in recovery when utilising the adb shell (this took me hrs to work out as my device wasn't listed!) I was in fastboot ot Hboot mode.
To be sure that you really are effected by the emmc issue (and not other partition corruption issues that show similar symptoms) you have to look at the kernel messages when booted to clockworkmod recovery. Do to this boot the phone into recovery and then (in and adb shell) issue the following command:
Code:
cat /proc/kmsg | grep mmc0
or
Code:
dmesg | grep mmc0
If you see output like (not necessarily in this order) :
Code:
mmc0: failed to get card ready
mmc0: reinit card
mmc0: Starting deferred resume
mmc0: Deferred resume failed
then you are effected by this issue.
Basically the emmc chip does not initialize any more after the first attempt to access it in write mode.
Based on our current knowledge this is a hardware issue and can not be cured.
---------- Post added at 03:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:08 PM ----------
You need adb setup for this, use one of the stickys to get started with adb
1, start up adb and type these in.
Code:
adb reboot recovery
2, after the device starts up in recovery, enter this
Code:
adb shell
3, and then this, your serial number should come up after mmc0:0001
Code:
cat /proc/kmsg | grep 'mmc0:0001'
It looks like M4G2DE 2.10 GiB is the bad one, judging from what the #G2root devs say, but lets see what our side is.
Thanks
And unfortunaly I got the bad one too, rooted with gfree, this is what I got
<6>[ 8.328460] mmcblk0: mmc0:0001 M4G2DE 2.10 GiB
Thanks for the reply.
I just gave up in the end and got a replacement from Orange.

[SOLVED] Possibly Bricked my Phone: Can't unmount/format/wipe the /cache partition

Hi All,
I have been flashing back and forth a bit from CM9 to CM10 to try things out. Today, I attempted to restore back to CM9 and it hung for over an hour, so I hard restarted it. Now, I can't restore anything, because it hangs on the /cache partition. I also receive the message while in recovery mode
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log

I am able to get adb shell in recovery mode and I have gone through the steps to check for a bad emmc, which did not indicate badness. I have attempted to use umount from the shell on /cache, which just hangs. In recovery mode, over adb shell, I can ls and cat any of the files in /cache without apparent issue.
I have attempted Super Wipe, factory reset, manual formatting, and wipe cache, all to no avail (they all just hang).
I am running CWM 6.0.1.1.
dmesg has a message about an ext4 error, that makes me suspicious, but I don't know what to do about it.

Thanks in advance for any help!
I am experiencing the same thing (I think) as the OP.
I had been running alpha2 of TeamChopsticks CM10. I installed the new recovery for the skyrocket (downloaded from teamchopsticks.org). Then rebooted into recovery. formatted /system -> installed alpha3 -> installed gapps -> installed darkside-wipe-cache-only -> rebooted. Then my phone just hung on the boot animation for 10+ minutes.
After rebooting I thought I would try to install alpha2 again. I tried to format /system, and it hung.
So I rebooted again, and tried to restore a backup. That hung on "Restoring .android_secure..."
So, I rebooted again. This time I tried a factory reset. It hung on "Wiping cache..."
After rebooting this time, I selected "show log" in CWM, which shows this (I don't know if this is helpful/related):
Code:
I:Checking for extendedcommand...
I:Skipping execution of extendedcommand, file not found...
I:Can't partition unsafe device: /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
I:Can't format unknown volume: /external_sd
I have also tried Fixing Permissions in CWM, with no apparent change.
Also, any time I perform an action in CWM (show logs, fix permissions, etc.) and select "go back" in the menu, the menu disappears. I am still in recovery (still see the CWM logo in the background, and see the text from my previous action), but buttons do nothing and there is no menu.
Any help would be appreciated.
Josh

Another follow up to my previous post:
I have tried to reinstall cm9 and cm10 alpha2.
With each I format /system, then when I select "Go Back" in the CWM menu the menu disappears (as I mentioned before). So, I reboot, then install zip from SD -> select the cm zip and get this:
Code:
CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.1
-- Installing: /sdcard/cm-9-20120715-EXPERIMENTAL-skyrocket-beta1.zip
And nothing after that. It will just sit there.

Interestingly (and perhaps ironically), looks like sk8er may be adding the Darkside Tools option in a forthcoming Recovery....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30639023&postcount=267
That's pretty hilarious, so Darkside Wipe is apparently the way to go, except it doesn't work in my case.
So, I tried installing that recovery but it won't install (just like everything else).
I get this:
Code:

Is there a way to install his recovery that I am not aware of?
Thanks,

Fantastic! With some help from the TeamChopsticks IRC channel, particularly sk8erwitskil, I installed CWM Touch 6.0.1.2 and was able to restore a backup of CM9 without an issue. Now that I can do that, I'm going to give CM10 alpha 3 another go.
Please see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777970 for any further help with the recovery.
Cheers!

I didn't do anything special to install recovery. I pushed the zip to my external card and installed it via the recovery. I assume the cache was not needed to be overwritten for the recovery install.

thats the way its done, i just dont understand why you couldnt do it the first place, and the cache has nothing todo with recovery just the rom
Ah, that's a confusion of terms. The original issue was that I could not restore from a backup. Or install a new rom. Apparently installing a new recovery was not an issue, I just didn't know that installing that would help at the time.
I just wanted to follow up that I was able to get my phone back thanks to help from Meanstreak242 in the IRC channel.
I ended up using an adb shell to dd the recovery image to the recovery partition (I *think* it was partition 22).

well I didnt have the exact circumstance of doing a restore. I just need to format my partitions so that would hopefully allow me to flash something else. My system basically tries its hardest to stay as Read Only. Even when I mount the system, nothing. I was hoping that with a new recovery I could. It "flashes", but once i reboot, its the same o Clockworkmod Recovery v5.8.1.3

This does sound similar to what I was seeing.
I also was not able to actually install the new recovery. So I did this:
I extracted cwm0612touch to get recovery.img
Then I mounted my phones SB by USB and copied recovery.img to my sd card
Then in the adb shell to my phone I used dd to copy the image to the appropriate partition
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22
Hopefully that does the trick for you!

Is it something in my reboot/boot that causes that?

Requesting assisstance with semi-brick issue.

Hello everyone,
I have unlocked my ASUS TF700T and then attempted to TWRP and a custom ROM. Once I did this, I began having issues. It wouldn't boot. I couldn't restore from TWRP backup. I can't seem to write to the system partition for some reason via fastboot but I seem to be able to do this just fine when in CWM or TWRP. Can anyone suggest what I may try from here? I can only get into recovery via VOL DOWN when booting and then selecting the wipe option. Right now I have two major issues. One is that for the life of me, I have never been able to get fastboot to show the actual serial of the device. It has always shown a single question mark. I have gone as far as building a Linux mint box just to get ADP and FASTBOOT drivers to install correctly on a 32-bit machine with USB 2.0. No luck, save result. My second issue is that I am unable to write to the system partition via fastboot. It gives me a remote () error message on fastboot and a could not process the command error in red on my tablet. I will have the exact error message for you shortly but right now I just wanted to get this posted. Any suggestions?
I can't flash the stock blob via fastboot and I can't seem to install a custom ROM via TWRP or CWM. Please advise.
I suspect me not being able to use ADB is my biggest problem. I can't see a serial number when I use fastboot devices. I have tried endlessly to get this resolved and I can't get it to change, AT ALL. I have installed google drivers, 32-bit fresh Linux OS, and plenty of utilities to auto install. No luck. If anyone can help with this, I'd appreciate it.
Here are my issues in a nutshell.
1.) I am unable to boot into recovery directly. I have to go into fastboot and select wipe, it then reboots and starts up in the recovery kernel. TWRP simply executes a command and then restarts and CWM actually boots and allows me to use it.
2.) No matter what I've tried, I have not been able to get the serial number to come up via fastboot. It simply shows a single questionmark. I have tried many solutions for this, but nothing changes.
3.) I am not sure but I believe the bootloader may be the problem. I can currently use fastboot but adb does not recognize the device.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! I have tried different version of TWRP and clockwork mod but all seem to have the same result. I also attempted to install another custom rom just for good measure and CWM states that

Boy oh boy! Mate, your post is one of the most confusing (and confused) posts I have read in a long time. I think you need to go back to the drawing board, forget everything you think you know and start fresh.
Let's clear some of it up:
1) CWM is a recovery (ClockWorkMod), I think you mean your rom is CM (CyanogenMod)
2) When you boot with Volume Down and Power you are booting into the bootloader, you see the bootloader menu and the tablet is in fastboot mode. The bootloader menu consists of 3 icons (if you are on a 4.2 bootloader):
RCK (recovery),
Android (system),
Wipe Data (stay away - it's a small miracle that you are not hard bricked already if you used this)
Are you saying you don't have those three in the BL menu????
RCK should be flashing and pushing Volume Up should boot you into recovery. There is no way to boot directly into it unless your rom has a modified restart menu.
3) adb and fastboot are two different protocols to connect PC and tablet. You use adb when Android is running, you use fastboot when the tablet is in fastboot mode.
Don't know what you tried to get the correct drivers working, but you probably have to go back to square 1 here too. If you use Windows check in Device Manager if your tablet is recognized at all:
Open Device Manager, boot the tablet int the bootloader and connect it via original USB cable to the PC. Do you see any change in Device Manager?
You left out the most important bits:
What bootloader version are you on?
Which version of TWRP?
How did you install TWRP if you don't have fastboot working?
What CM version are you running?
Thanks for the reply. I'll try and be more concise...
Hello,
First of all, I'd like to say thank you. I am all over the place. I will attempt to be more detailed and concise with my wording. Here are my responses below:

I am familiar with the difference. I have not used nor flashed CyanogenMod. I have indeed installed CWM on recovery and can still do so. I just can't boot into recovery without using the dreded WIPE option on my bootloader. Once I use this, it restarts in CWM and I can use it (still fails to install anything on system though.)

I have 2 options for my bootloader when I boot into it, fastboot(USB Icon) and wipe (I think we all know this one.) That's it. This is part of the reason why I can't get to recovery mode without using the WIPE option. (I stayed away from the wipe optoin for weeks until I was convince there was nothing else to try. Once I tried this, I was able to boot into recover with CWM or TWRP. TWRP however ONLY runs some sort of script and then reboots again. CWM allows me to use it. Hope this makes sense. Please let me know if I should clarify further.

I do not. Since I first installed TWRP, ran a TWRP backup and installed the custom 4.4.2 (I believe) rom I have not seen any other options.

I have tried TWRP 3.2.1.0, TWRP 2.6.3.2, CWM 6.0.4.7 and Phil's CWM based recovery for the TF700. So far, none have been able to flash a custom ROM again nor the stock rom when I use recovery GUI for them. Please advise.
Also, it seems I am able to write to any partition with fastboot except for system. When I write to the system partition my tablet shows red text on the screen that states "the command flash:system failed 0x170003 or something similar. Fastboot shows a failed: (remote() error after trying to write to the partition. Someone told me my boot loader was the problem, but I have no idea how to change it without using the 'staging' or 'flash system commands.'
I'm not sure if this matters but I thought I'd post it. When I run fastboot -w it fails saying that the file system is not supported. When I run fastboot erase userdata or cache. It seems to work without any issues. Here is a sample of the output I get:
Code:
c:\adb>fastboot erase userdata

When I try to use fastboot to flash the stock firmware using the staging command, I get this on my command prompt:

So you can still flash different recoveries via fastboot and enter them from the bootloader. That means you should also be able to use "adb shell" to connect to your recovery (when it is running). What does the recovery do when you try to flash a ROM?
If adb shell to your recovery works, exit it again and run these commands to assess your situation:
adb shell ls -l /dev/block > devblock.txt
adb shell dmesg > dmesg.txt
adb shell hexdump -C /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 -n 64 > mmcblk0p3.txt
and post the resulting files.
Tony - consider yourself lucky since you caught the attention of two of the best people in this business. Do try to get the info _that was asking for.
I am just trying to clarify things:
Do you remember what stock rom you had before you started this adventure?
It sounds as if you were on pre-JB 4.2 stock rom, then flashed some TWRP version and then a KitKat rom?
If you can flash recoveries, you do have fastboot access to the tablet.
@_that, @sbdags Would it be an option for Tony to flash a CWM recovery that "let him use it" and try to flash sbdags' bootloader/TWRP package?
Tony - don't do anything before you get their advice.
OS
Tony I see that your using a windows PC.. I would highly recommend a Linux Mint OS... There are to many bugs in windows when you are working with low level Android/SoC platforms .... Im not going to say it will fix your issues, but I have seen it do just that for lots of users.... Just let me know if this sound like something for you, when and if your ready, the community with be here to help you out....As always thx lj
I am getting my Linux mint 32-bit OS on my laptop with USB 2.0... again.
Hi guys,
I thank you deeply for your time. I have learned so much trying to un-brick this thing, and yet have had no results. I will be putting together my mint box in just an hour or so and then testing/trying your suggestions. Please check back in an hour or two. Cheers.

It usually fails when it tries to write to the system partition. Please refer to the posts above. It tends to show the FAILED (Remote() error after the write command. My tablet also shows an error saying it could not process the command.

I do not recall the stock ROM but I DO KNOW I updated to the latest firmware right after I opened it (Big mistake I know... now.) So, I had no choice but to factory unlcok it with the ASUS TOOL. This was for X-Mas two months ago, so I should be the latest I'd immagine.
I did indeed install a kit kat rom on my first attempt and someone told me I forgot to put the proper bootloader prior and that is why I bricked it. So, I think you are dead on about that but can't confirm.
I do indeed... only problem is that I always get a damn ? for my serial number. I do not believe it has ever shown anything but.... though I didn't check until after I had this problem. I do not recall checking prior to using TWRP to install the kit kat rom zip files.
I will wait. i am very greatful to have help, especially from the top dawgs. xP Cheers!

Your photos show a 9.4.5.x bootloader (and I'm 100% sure about this), which is strange because normally the bootloader is updated together with the stock firmware - so if you updated to the latest firmware, you should also have the latest bootloader (10.6.1.14.x).

[Q] TF700T stuck on Teamwin splash screen

My son tried flashing his TF700T to a custom rom (jellybean 4.4.4)
that appeared to be successfull
however after a few days it rebooted itself and now only boots to the teamwin splash page and stays there
just prior to the teamwin splash page 4 green penguins appear in the top left hand corner of the display.
Let me know what additional information you need to help me diagnose and fix this issue
thanks in advance

Yes but connect it to a PC and see if you can get adb access. Search on the 700 forums here how to do that if you don't understand as it is too long to retype it all out for you.
adb devices returns the following

0123456789ABCDEF recovery
please advise what i should do next

adb reboot-bootloader
If you get there look in the upper left for the bootloader version ....

Get this info if you can ....

Next thing you can try to diagnose the problem when it hangs at the TWRP curtain (preferably 1-2 minutes after turning it on):
adb pull /tmp/recovery.log
adb shell dmesg > dmesg.txt
dmesg.txt and recovery.log files are attached
My thanks again for all the help

TWRP seems to hang after trying to mount the data partition. Run this to see if the mount worked:
adb shell mount > mount.txt
If the output file doesn't contain a line for /data, try mounting it manually and see if it contains the usual directories for an Android /data partition (e.g. app, data, local, media, misc, ...):
adb shell mount /data
ls /data > data.txt
If there is file system corruption on /data, we can try repairing or formatting it in the next step - is there any important data on the device that we should try to recover?

Maybe if you would also get a partition table .....
Code:
adb pull /proc/partitions
Thx Josh
adb shell mount > mount.txt output attached as is adb pull /proc/partitions
there is no line for /data in the mount.txt file
adb shell mount /data results in mount: can't read '/etc/fstab': No such file or directory
there is no data on the tablet that he needs to recover. everything of importance is on the SD card

Oops, I forgot that you need to specify everything when mounting manually in TWRP:
Code:
adb shell mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 /data
You'll probably get another error message.
The command
adb shell mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 /data
never comes back from the tf700t

OK, then TWRP is having the same problem which explains why it hangs. I've never seen mount hang, but this is most likely due to filesystem corruption.
To recreate the filesystem (this will irrecoverably delete all user data on the device), try this:
Code:
adb shell make_ext4fs -l -16384 -a /data /dev/block/mmcblk0p8
Make sure you get it exactly right - use copy+paste. The command should take a couple of seconds to minutes at most and output a few lines of text.
