[Q] Battery question - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I am using Raver's Valhalla Black Ed. with Thomas's Lightning Zap on my SGS4G.
My battery drains a little quick which is fine bc of my settings.
Here's where things get tricky.
My battery runs fine but once it hits the 50% mark, it will drop to 1%. I left the phone alone for the night and came back to check on it in the morning it jumped back up to 30%.
Anybody know what's going on.
FYI I have another battery that does not have this problem. I know it's not the rom or the tweak. Just something out of the ordinary. I tried the battery calibration and I tried Thomas's first 2 suggestions to get rid of the gremlins. I have not tried the odin 1 click because I think the battery is just acting silly.
Any ideas?

Look for the gremlin remover. Good luck.

Terrible battery life!

I really hate creating these threads because it makes me look likr a complete noob but I can' figire this out for the life of me. I bought the charge thinking I could use it for a day and change but I have yet to experience this awesome battery life. Even when I got my first day, the battery life was horrible and even after its first charge, it wasnt any better. Do I just have a bad battery or something?
Heres what I remember doing:
-Flash gummycharge day 2 of owning phone (1.8.5) novoodoo kernal
-An issue came up where I couldnt press my power button without the phone freezing
-so at this point I reverted back to a stock ee2 rom
-i then flashed gummycharged once again (same as above)
-after flashing, I charged my battey up, shutdown, wait for 100%, repeat 3x to wipe battery stats/calibrate my battery
So I unplugged my phone at 5:00pm and it is now 7:07pm. In two hours with about an hour of browsing, my phone is at 73%. I have nothing on any of my homescreens just to be sure it wasnt consuming the battery, cdma automatic instead of 4g lte since my area does not support it yet and manual brightness at 15%.

Download humble 1.25 and your battery woes will be no more my son....
Will take you suggestion and try it out tonight. I dont mean to derail my own thread but is it possible that when I flashed back to stock ee2, it caused my signal to decrease even though I put gummycharged over it later? Ever since I had to reflash because of the power button issue, I noticed a decrease in signal strength (from mid 80s to high 90s). Sorry for all the questions!

Hi,
I saw your Humble ROM and was considering installing it to try to improve battery life as we'll.
What about your ROM conserves battery over the stock rom?
Now that p3droid released 2.3.4 I will certainly have to try it, do you plan to make a version of Humble using this new base?
Thanks for your work, I really am loving this new phone!

If you are getting that bad of battery life, go to EE4 Debloated . Flash P&J OC Kernel. and Undervolt your phone.
Whay would be causing this kind of battery life though?

No telling, depends on how you use your phone and what apps are running.
Thats the thing. I haven't been doing anything other than browsing. I only went to class and browsed for maybe 2 hours max. Everything else is 2% ish other than the dolphin hd browser. If I look at the battery stats, the display is the only thing thats depleting the battery really. I'm starting to think its because I have weak coverage in my area.

I've had similar battery issues with two different Charge units running each ROM/Kernel (except GB). I also live in a weak coverage area where I average 1 to 2 bars, sometimes dropping to 0 and i'm convinced this has to be it. I had written this idea off initially because I previously had ATT and the same weak coverage with them, but nowhere near the same abnormal battery drain...so I guess there must be a difference between the way CDMA and GSM operate in this respect? I'm in a 3G only area and keep the phone locked to CDMA/Auto also.

I am running 1.25 and have had absolutely no improvement to my battery life (strong 4g area in SoCal).
I've just resigned to the fact that I'll get 6-7 hours (even on an extended battery, same results) and have to charge once or twice a day.
Coming from the fascinate I honestly think the battery life is better. Although I turned lte off since we don't have any coverage for it yet. My mind will probably change when we get it. Running stock ee4 rooted with voodoo kernel. My father is running the same thing and also came from the fascinate, he completely agrees.

I had really bad battery life on my phone running the stock rom and gummycharged. With the phone sleeping and only data on, I was losing at least 5% an hour.
I switched to Humble a week ago and my battery life is exceptional. I am ususally looking at 24 hrs with 4g on and longer with it off.
If you do a lot of browsing and keeping your screen on, your battery is going to burn quickly. No matter what ROM you are using. If it's draining a lot of battery in sleep, flash Humble.

Dude, this isn't the fix. I'll flash Humble 1.25 right now and prove to you that it doesn't fix battery issues. Yes, it's less of a battery hog than the other available ROMs, but flashing Humble 1.25 will not fix your battery gremlin.
I wish Danalo, imnuts and the other gurus would spend more time figuring out this battery gremlin. Charging your battery to 100% then wiping battery stats through CWR doesn't work either. I've tried it countless times.
OP, here's another thread regarding the battery issues many people are experiencing - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145161

Don't give up so soon. The battery life on the Charge can be amazing and I know from experience. My experience also shows that there are funky battery issues that pop up when flashing various crap. Flashing an Odin bundle has not worked for me, at all. Wiping battery stats has not worked.
I was running GummyCharged 1.5 with the PBJT kernel and voodoo enabled and got 17+ hours of medium-hard use EASILY. Since then, I flashed the original GB leak, Gummy, Humble, Stock... I cannot figure out what the heck is going on, my battery life is still crap.

It really sounds like signal issues to me. My Charge handles weak mobile signals better than my Thunderbolt, but any cell phone will really crank up the juice draw looking for a tower if it can't find one. In my north county office, my Thunderbolt will drain 25% per hour if I don't keep it near the window where it can get a better signal.
You need to post a lot more details.
Are you on wifi or mobile data? Are you 3G or 4G area? How strong is your 3G/4G signal?
Have you dug into the battery use screens to see what's up?
Grab Spare Parts from the Market if your ROM doesn't have it and look into it's battery statistics...things like wake-locks will really kill the phone.

Horrible Battery Life on Pinnacle 1.3

My battery drops 5% under 1 min without even use of the phone, even when the phone's on standby. After about 3 hours of moderate use (seesmic and whatsapp) it'll drop from 100% charge to about 50%. Sometimes right after I plug it out, I can see the battery drop to 99% then 98 and so on.
I'm running Pinnacle 1.3 now and I was of the impression that it was a great ROM for battery life. Before this I had a stock GB ROM, and then CM7. On CM7, the battery was also horrible.
I've run battery dry then charged it back to 100% and did battery calibration. still horrible.
any suggestions, please?

The battery life was ok with my stock GB ROM. I'm hopeful there're other solutions that don't include buying a new battery.
Sounds like you have a rogue app.
Edit
Try watchdog lite from the market. It should help to isolate which app is gone rogue.
Ah, thank you. I'll get Watchdog and hopefully find whatever is causing all of this.

If that doesn't work maybe just try reflashing. Make sure you have 100% battery when you flash as well. I've used ROMs before that I knew had good battery life and sometimes when I flashed them my phone died fast. I remember it happening on Serendipity VII before. Didn't make sense cause I had good battery life with it before, but that flash didn't go well or something. Reflash brought back good battery life.

I'm not sure what Seesmic is but if you're doing a lot of web browsing that's definitely what is killing your battery life. The display will use more power than pretty much any app out there. I have my screen brightness as low as it'll go and I don't leave my screen on for a long time when I do turn it on. Plus the white colors of websites uses more energy on AMOLED screens.

Yes I also have the Samurai kernel, along with Voodoo. Still no dice though. I wish I could get the battery life I hear so many people talking about. I've been told to try out dlev 5.0.
Also make sure you have Automatic Brightness, Auto-rotate and Power Saving mode turned off.
i have brightness to the lowest, no auto brightness. i don't like auto-rotate so i keep it off. but i do have power saving mode on. why would that be off?
where is "power saving mode" setting on a captivate? simple questions:
1. when did you flash the rom?
2. Have you seen in settings which process/app is using your battery?

It did for me. I can't remember if I saw the battery life drop after flashing the 4.2 kernel update or not. I think when I reflashed I didn't flash anything and left it with version 3 or whatever it comes with.
Also, on Pinnacle I am using all stock stuff (kernel, modem), not the Samurai kernel or anything.

It should be off, it works with auto brightness to keep it dim and "save power" but if you're not using auto brightness its just another process running that is wasting resources.
Auto brightness is pretty useless on tw roms because that handy brightness adjustment by holding down the status bar and moving left or right.

1. Like Reamer09 says refash.....BUT don't forget to wipe data, wipe cache and dalvik cache. Wiping data and cache just before reflash.........it helps with my battery issues. I don't think there is any ROM out there with that bad a battery life. No dev would let that pass
EDIT: Just re-read.....your battery dropping like that after recharge can be a kernel issue......it happens to me on a a particular kernel (will not name ! devs all work very hard on their kernels.....) and flashing another one helped.
Ok I will reflash it. I've also noticed some lack of responsiveness while using the phone. For instance when I select an option in a menu anywhere, it pauses a bit (probably a second or two) before it carries out the selected command.
Another example is while I'm typing, I have haptic feedback on and so I feel a vibration everytime I touch a letter. The vibration is usually just a short buzz, but once in a while I feel a strange longer vibration. It's weird, really. I hope reflashing will also help with this.

Can't seem to get good battery life on ValhallaFinal and Lightning Zap 3.4.2

I've flashed ValhallaFinal and Lightning Zap from scratch (factory wipe, cache wipe, dalvik cache wipe) at least 7 or 8 times, calibrating the battery using the Battery Calibration app from the Market and going through 4 full discharge/recharge cycles (as per instructions found on this forum) and my battery life, to put it bluntly, sucks!
For my most recent attempt, I followed these instructions from the maker of Lightning Zap 3.4.2:
Do a factory wipe, flash ROM 2 times, power off and let set for 10 minutes. Power on and select reboot as phone will boot in recovery mode. Allow to set 10 minutes. Reboot to recovery, flah Lightning Zap, let phone set 10 minutes, reboot, reinstall backups, enjoy... Make sure you are flashing the latest version of Lightning Zap (v3.4.2)

Last night, after fully charging, I disconnected and left the phone on my desk. 9 hours later, it had dropped from 100% to 46%. Just a few minutes ago, it died on me, after 16 hours and almost no use (perhaps 10 minutes of GPS and 20 minutes using apps FOR THE ENTIRE DAY). I don't think it's the ROM, as ValhallaFinal may be the smoothest ROM I've tried for the SGS4G. Applying Lightning Zap has given me a slight increase in Quadrant scores (around 2000).
Overall, I'm kinda disappointed that my quad scores aren't higher and that my battery life is so short. How are people getting 30 and 40 hours from a single charge? Besides some podcasts and Gmail, I have no background syncing going on. Am I doing something wrong? Should I try Thunderbolt instead perhaps?
About three weeks back, I grabbed some files out of the Thunderbolt .zip file and added them to Lightning Zap 3.2.zip. So far, that one gave me the highest quad scores (2200-2300) and the best battery life (almost a full day with constant use, though not nearly as good as an old Vibrant with an ICS ROM I have laying around, which seems to go on for days and days, albeit with minor use).
Any ideas on what I can do here? The constant wiping and flashing is growing quite tiresome. I just want the longest battery life I can possibly get (preferably without the lag that I had before switching to ValhallaFinal).
Buy more batteries

I'd be willing to buy a replacement battery, if it was warranted (my battery is defective, etc.). Can't be messing around with extra batteries, though; too much stuff in my pockets as it is.
Is there an app or some way to check the health of my current battery?
I doubt its your battery ive noticed too that using valhalla with or without lightning zip i get worse battery life than i did using the stock build.....but no big deal for me ive got 3 batteries and an externel charger that i had gotten for my vibrant.
But i can tell you that i got much smoother and snappier responce using the build.prop from valhalla black/cm7 hybrid and placed it in valhalla final.
But you may want to reflash valhalla final before doing so.....could end up with a negative using two positives....in otherwords no lightning zip

Out of curiosity, what kind of battery life were you getting prior to flashing this ROM & tweak? I know you don't want to wipe/flash again, but I'm wondering what kind of battery life you would get if you flashed back to stock?
Here's the problem: Deep idle doesn't work. That's not to say that it won't ever work, but what should happen is that when you turn the screen off, the hardware for wifi, gps, and all the other things in your phone should shut off. Well, they don't. When you turn on GPS, WIFI, or what have you, they continue to run at full capacity even when the screen is off.
In general, to quote a kernel developer of this thread, battery sucks with all roms. Browsing will always use a lot of battery because, well, your phone is working it's ass off with the 4g/3g connection.

Maybe I have a crappy battery. I've never been able to get more than 16 hours out of mine with low calling, texting, and word feud all over wifi.
If you are using it with Ravers Black Vahalla, remove S14buildprop and S14buildpropmodremover... Push the original build.prop from the ROM to /system, and reflash Lightning Zap.

Your question is a few days old -
But helping somebody through PM who asked for help with their battery on VB and Adrenaline Shot - I mentioned to her that GPS and Sync are huge data/battery hogs. She checked and they both had been on. I told her to turn them off and only turn on as needed.
Today she replied -
"Just wanted to let you know that after turning off gps and sync I can notice a big chunk of an increase in battery life. I get awesome battery life, thank you so much for all of your aid "
Sometimes people who know forget to mention the obvious.
Hope it helps!

Is your battery life/performance below what you would expect or what others seem to be getting? If yes, try my Gremlin Remover
Or are you just trying to enhance your current battery life? If yes, try Lightning Zap v4.4 VB.

Another battery issue o.0

First off I've been around a while, long time flasher. It has just recently started to upset me. When my battery is around 20% the phone just shuts off as it has shut down due to no charge. I have used search function and can't seam to find matching issues. Its not a recent situation just started to annoy me. Oh and it does the notification low battery before powering off. I have calibrated battery and wipe battery status and getting pretty good battery life. Thanks in advanced.

Try another battery to see if the issue is replicated.

Battery Drains After Crash

My phone has been acting really weird the last few day. I had [ROM][MTD]CyanogenMod 9.0.0-rc2 UNOFFICIAL by TeamAcid[R5][Jul-20-2012 installed on my phone. But it would crash all of the time. Afterwards when the phone rebooted the battery would go from 100% to 9%. If I dont boot the phone back up right after a crash and wait a little while. When I boot it up the battery will be around 40-45%. I used [Heimdall][One-Click] The T959V Heimdall One-Click Collection [05/20/2012] earlier today, Just to see if I continued to have the battery problem. I only had the phone crash once while on the stock rom, and the battery did drain about 50% but I also started having a problem where I would lose my data connection all together. Rebooting the phone brought it back, only to lose it again after around 30min to 1hr. It has not crashed for about 3hrs now and I have not lost my data connection either. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on here? I tried deleting the battery stats with the battery at 100% before going back to stock but that did not seem to help at all. I downloaded a batter calibrator from the market place and tried that as well. Used it when the battery was at 100%. None of this has worked. Now that im back on the stock rom its only crashed once, but the battery did still drain. Any ideas? I would really like to go back to CyanogenMod 9 but its not worth it if the phone continuously crashes and kills the battery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Try Gremlins Remover.

So you don't waste any more time, "battery calibration" is snake oil, lithium ion batteries don't need "conditioning" (and actually suffer from both high temperatures and deep discharge cycles), but the moon is made of cheese. Ok, at least the first two are true.
As you're having problems with one of the most stable and reliable GB ROMs for this phone, I suspect that you may have one or more of:
Bad battery
Bad user-land applications
Corrupt application data
Corrupt media data (for example, music on your microSD)
Bad phone
Bad luck
A "start over" approach with a complete clean-out either using the above-mentioned one-click, or doing the equivalent by hand (wiping all partitions, flashing stock, starting with a fresh microSD), then seeing how the phone/battery behaves without any apps would be the path I would take. If it passed that, I'd slowly start adding back apps, and only restoring data/preferences where you really need them.
Im doing the gremlin remover right now. I will let you guys know how to goes. Thanks for the advise, this has been driving me crazy.
Tried the gremlin remover last night and played with my phone today. Its still crashing and then when I boot it up back the battery is pretty much dead... I think i have a bad battery. Never had these problems with the phone before. Thanks for the help guys. I guess Ill get a new battery and see if that fixes the problem.
I have this EXACT same problem. I'm on AOKP and the battery with go from having a decent charge and die. Then if I take the batt out, hold the power button for 15 secs and let the phone sit with no batt for 10 minutes or so, the phone will go back to around 50% batt life. After gremlin remover and Bryan's one click back to stock multiple times, I've finally come to the conclusion that I need a new battery.
I ordered a new battery today. I will let you know how it goes.

Mine does the same thing... doesn't really crash often.. once in a blue moon. But if I reboot. . I get that instant battery drain ...GR didn't fix it.... I just attribute it to ageing battery.

So I looked I to this issue more. For anyone having this problem, remove the battery and place it on a hard flat surface to see if it has swollen any, if it has then the battery is defective. My battery actually rocks a little. I could actually tell it had swollen before I even put it on my desk.
That is only for seeing whether a cell has busted. It is normal wear and tear. That is kind of like how u lose battery life after hundreds of cycles because it is just how the current li-ion battery technologies work.
I would download the one click and also reflash boot loaders and repartition your device.

Tried that, even with bootloaders. OP also stated they used gremlin remover as well. As we we're both having the exact same problem, I was giving him a better solution that wasn't the standard "reflash, repartition, etc."
I finally got my new battery in. And all is well now. Thanks everyone for the advice and help

thats crazy swapping you battery worked. lol, mine does it too. not so much the crashing just a simple reboot and it will be drop down from 70% to 1%. This was doing the same thing with my phone before my charging port got busted. So i had to swap out the guts from my old galaxy s with broken screen. When i put the new internals in i started with bh's one click back to stock and flashed antonx kernal. Then flashed cm9 and it still does it. i will try a new battery as well.
My thought (AFTER being solved)
Well, I don't mean to come off as rude, but come on guys! I've had this problem for a while, and as soon as it happened I knew I needed a new battery. On top of my phone being somewhat "old", the fact we all play around with it so much, and do so many battery pulls most likely does NOT help the matter. At least I screw around with my phone and try out many ROMs...
But I'm glad I have confirmation that a battery swap will do the trick. It sucks that stores don't carry the t959v battery anymore... Guess I'll be ordering online tonight.
