[Q] Infuse ClockWorkMod fail? - Samsung Infuse 4G

Hi, i`ve owned an infuse for a couple months now and i`m loving it. I bought it off somebody and it came pre-rooted. Superuser was working great, i was running rooted apps and everything was pretty awesome. However, i`ve just recently wanted to try something new. Such as flashing a new rom. I downloaded the zeus rom (i also have others), went into rom manager and tried to install. That didn`t work. So i tried to manually boot into clockworkmod recovery and install. That didn`t work. I think the main problem is how do i get into clockworkrecovery? Whenever i boot into it i lack very many options that i keep seeing from others. Everytime i try to boot into it it says
Copying media files
Successfully copied meida files
Manual Mode
Appling Multi-CSC
Installing Multi-CSC
can't access to system/csc/RWC/system/
Successfully applied multi-csc
and the options are
Android system recovery <3e>
Samsung Recovery Utils for BML
Enter: Power Key, Select: vol up/ vol down
reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
Everytime i try to apply update from sdcard it says:
Failed to verify whole-file signature
Installation aborted.
I can't remember all of it but you get the just of the idea
I can't seem to figure this out and i dont think this is clockwordrecovery. I've tried various methods of rebooting using the CWM app, Rom Manager app, and the button pressing.
All i want to do is flash a new rom! Can anyone help?
P.S. It isn't a typo when i put "Successfully copied meida files", they actually spelt it meida.

You don't have cwm recovery yet.
Don't use ROM manager.
I made a thread on "how to." It's a collection of some things I've learned.
Start there.
The link is on my signature line

So where should i start? At the flashing part?

yes..follow gtg's CWM instruction set

So. I already started with the odin UCKD5 one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021
and i already started into download mode. However, it now says downloading. and my computer was like "installing new hardware" then "could not install new hardware" and now my phone is stuck in the downloading screen that says do not turn off target. Odin has yet to pick up my phone....what now?

if you have root you can flash a cwm enabled kernel with sgs kernel flasher.
if you have froyo use the defuse or community kernel. or use gtgs thread for cwm without flashing a kernel.
if you have gingerbread then you will need to flash one of the custom kernels such as entropy dd, hellraiser, or infusion. gtgs cwm thread will not work on gingerbread.

My phone is rooted and running on gingerbread. But um. i have a more pressing concern at the moment....this downloading screen is freaking me out...

okay well i can't seem to figure any of this stuff out. any noone has replied so i just reset my phone so i can actually use it.
Some more information for those who can help is that the firmware is 2.3.3
Baseband version is I997RUXKG3
Kernel version
2.6.35.7-I997RUXKG3-CL366622
Build number
Gingerbread.uxkg3

that's Rogers firmware. use kernel flasher (easiest) and flash one of the popular gingerbread kernels. entropy dd is popular. once the kernel is on there You will have red cwm. that will allow you to flash whatever.
if you flash a rom it will include a kernel so don't worry about the minor incompatibilities that exist with att based roms.

So i'm currently on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1212795
with this in the other tab
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289460
I'm not sure which kernel to download. But i'll try flashing a couple anyway

also i tried using heimdall/odin or whatever. It wouldn't pick up my phone in download mode. and thus couldn't install drivers.

well. I tried flashing one of the kernels. specifically
DD_02162012_A.zip - [Click for QR Code] (5.16 MB, 118 views)
So i flashed it using SGS kernel flasher. it said flashing....rebooting. And now it's stuck at the rogers logo. I have no clue what to do and i think it might be bricked. So if i could get someones help, perhaps step-by-step as i obviously cannot do this following the other instructions.

You are stuck in bootloop. Not bricked or even close to it. Read infused rom and flash it. If you cannot figure that out you should not be flashing. It's dead simple. Promise. Search it. It's in the dev thread. Called infused by gtg

thanks for the help so far. but i went here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
and the link no longer works. so what now. I can't get the files and therefore can't put anything into odin.

sigh. so i downloaded the files from someone who uploaded it again. Did everything. Succesful. only to have it be stuck in bootloop and samsung screen. Did what it said. pulled battery, replace, vol buttons and power key until recovery shows up. That doesn't happen. Instead i notice that instead of a rogers screen it says at&t and then goes to samsung screen. and then restarts again by going back to at&t. If i let go of the buttons it goes back to begin stuck at the samsung one. This has made so many problems for me.... just by trying to get clockworkmod. what do i do now?

Xparks,
You really should read up a bit. If you looked toward the end of that thread,
you will see that the file has been uploaded by another user to another site:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251&page=40

i got that one already. i've passed that step. I'm now stuck in bootloop with at&t and samsung logo. Bootloop was supposed to be a rare occurence...and the instructions to work around it aren't working right now. I can't access recovery mode. Or anything for that matter.

Download the drivers for the phone on the computer. If it does not work then, try heimdale. If you can not do this, then just ask me for the jtag guy, ill give you the link to the website. Mobiletechvideos uses jtag to recover the phone (taking it apart, hooking it up with a ton of wires lol). Keeps personal data, just recovers rom, or you can pay a little extra for him just to install whatever rom. It worked for me, you may have a broken usb controller like me all of a sudden.

I have kies but when i start it up it says please connect your mobile phone. And it doesn't pick up my phone. It probably shouldn't seeing how my phone is stuck. But i went to menu in kies and pressed install driver. But i'm not sure how to download my exact driver if kies can't even pick up my phone. But i ran the "zazig" program. and i'm installing the drivers from there. And i'm going to attempt to reflash using that since Odin didnt work before. The link is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331381
And it did that. But i don't what to do. I've been on xda reading forums all day and the only thread i can see relevent to mine is someone advising them to bring it back under warranty. Mines rooted. no warranty for me. I hope if it ever works again i can use it on rogers still because it says AT&T.....and i'm afraid to try and unlock it. because we know the last time i tried to do something.....
Odin can still detect it and i tried reflashing the unbrick stuff. No dice.

[Q] big problem with sidekick

bought sidekick sght839 from friend and it worked fine b4 doing reset. now, when it starts, the tutorial comes up on home screen and can`t press arrow to proceed to next page. firmware 2.2.1-kernal 2.6.32.9-build froyo uvkj2. the wireless works and connects to internet fine. can`t use phone as 456 keys dont work and worked b4. can change settings OK. have rooted it. still doesnt want to work as b4. am new here so if someone could let me know if they have any ideas, I would appreciate it. am also new to android phones. I cant find heimdall file to download. Know how to set phone to download and use Odin but cant find proper files online.
Use the search bar on XDA to search for the kj2 stock Odin files, follow the directions given closely, download them, make sure you have the correct drivers so that Odin recognizes your phone, then boot into download mode using the method found in the forums, just do a quick search for download mode. You should have everything operational after download from Odin is finished, hope this helps

trouble installing odin
I have tried numerous times to install Odin but all I get is unregistered device...that is as far as it goes. Dont know how to get around that. 456 keys also work then dont work otherwise the phone works fine as far as internet and making calls goes. Crazy device!
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350060&highlight=heimdall
I soft-bricked my phone and this was the only method that worked.
if you havent reflashed your firmware yet, i have a suggestion. install clockworkmod recovery. there is a thread in the sk4g development section of this website. the title is something like cwm for the sk4g. enjoy! so look for that and follow the instructions in the first post of that thread. make sure you grab the update.zip file from that thread and do not flash cwm through rom manager. trust me on this. after you have followed the instructions in that thread, boot into cwm (boot into stock recovery and select reinstall packages. you should then boot into cwm recovery), select advanced, and then select fix permissions. when it finishes, it will say done. reboot your device and see if any of the problems have been fixed. i did this and it stopped my phone from randomly rebooting every 15 to 30 minutes. it might fix the problems on your device. if not, i would move to the next step, reflashing the firmware. flash the kj2 build and then learn how to remove bloatware. kj2 is less buggy to start with. still buggy, but less buggy than KD1, KG2, or the other version (KI2?). if you reflash firmware, you will need to re-root in order to remove bloatware. removing bloatware is key for optimal performance with the stock firmware. you can also flash a custom rom if you wish. most of the custom roms on this site have minimal bloatware, so if you wish to go that route, bloatware shouldnt be much of an issue. i personally am on the stock firmware and dont suggest flashing roms for someone so new to android. but if you feel confident enough, thats your decision. i also suggest booting into cwm and running fix permissions after removing bloatware. i theorize that removing system apps causes permissions errors similar to registry errors in windows.
some success with sk4g
don`t know how or why but I got frustrated with the phone and threw it in the trash on top of coffee grounds...changed my mind and pulled it out and cleaned it and charged it and...voila...it worked. banged it against the sink a couple times. weird! so, now I am trying to install custom rom and keep running into everification error when I try to flash. 456 buttons still dont work and cant take a video with it but it will probably work better if I can find a work-around for these errors I get. I am on a mission now and I cant give up. Hope someone can help me. I think there may be hope for this thing. Thanks for whatever help I can get.
i told you, install clockworkmod and fix permissions. it will probably fix the problems you are having. if you choose not to listen, thats. your choice. but my advice will probably help you without having to through the pain in the rear of reflashing the firmware. reflashing the firmware itself isnt really that difficult, but once you do it, your back to square one with your device. starting from scratch is the frustrating part. i bricked my phone and had to reflash, and it took me a couple weeks to get the phone where i needed it again. im staying on the stock firmware for this reason.
how does one fix permissions
OK OK dont yell. How do I fix permissions? Newbie on board here so I need a little more help than the rest. I dont necessarily want to do the rom thing myself. Thanks.
copy and paste this into your browser: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124453 and follow the instructions in the first post. after you have followed those instructions, boot into recovery mode. the stock recovery will apear. scroll down and select reinstall packages. the clockworkmod recovery should boot up. the text in the screen will be orange. scroll down and select advanced. scroll down again and select fix permissions. when it finishes, it will say done. reboot your device and see if you have any of the issues you were having. i am not guaranteeing this will fix the issues, but i think it might. if it doesnt, my next suggestion will be reflashing the stock firmware. but try this and post back when finished and let me know if it works.
sk4g problem
didnt work. did exactly what you said and no go. any other suggestions. it works so well for some things like wifi and calling except 456 buttons on and off. it is funky indeed. thanks for the help also, cant take video or manage photo or use front camera as the left side button to choose options doesnt work either. seems like something is up with the rom. cant install anything from samsung or tmobile as it is an unregistered phone.
were you able to boot into clockworkmod recovery?
boot up
yes I did.
then you need to reflash your firmware. you need odin, you need the samsung vibrant drivers, and you need the firmware files. do a search on odin in the dev thread for this device and you should be able to find everything you need, including instructions.
Have tried that too
have the drivers, have odin and have tried that too. that didnt work as the phone is unregistered and not recognized. it is used and I cant register it.
on your phone, go to settings>about phone and scroll down to where it says baseband version. the last 3 characters under that will say either kd1, kg2, or kj2. if its not kj2, then i have a suggestion for you. but post back and lmk.
phone setting
it is kj2. now what? this is all confusing as it has been updated I believe by previous owner. thanks for your time. i am going to try the odin method again. i first did it on a 64bit puter with windows 7 so i can try it on my 32bit machine. have read that sometimes odin doesnt work well on 64bit. am willing to try anything. will let you know. thanks again. cant get the stock rom download anywhere. will just try flashing custom rom.
you cant odin a custom rom unless the dev makes an odin file, which they usually dont. you have to flash through clockworkmod. you can head over to the dev section and pick from many roms that are listed. follow the developers instructions for flashing very carefully or you will brick your device.
Thanks for advice.
I know I can`t odin a custom rom. I can`t seem to odin anything on this machine. I have cwm and have tried using it to flash a rom but I keep getting everification and such error msgs. Gonna let it sit for awhile and think about this. I have the update.zip file on sdcard but can`t seem to get that to install no matter what I do. Very puzzling deal. Thanks anyway for your help.
do you have android sdk installed on your computer? google it and install it, then try odin again.
got sdk
sdk installed and will try odin again...seems a little more complicated than the last time I tried...will google a bit more on this. Thanks.

[Q] HTC One S(ville) black screen, thats it... just a black screen, what can i do???

I was working fine, enjoying my new HTC One S with CM9 rom installed. Well the battery life wasnt the best on it, and i didnt install the custom kernel. So I looked for the custom kernel download(on my phone, not on my computer) and i found a .zip file. Well I thought that you could just download the kernel straight to my phone and open it up with "Rom Manager" which i did, it than said i needed to reboot the phone in recovery to continue the installation, so I did... it took me to recovery "to continue the installation" well than I looked away, looked backed down and it was black.... and i have tried powering up, booting into boot loader, booting into recover, and nothing... its just BLACK! nothing works, its literally useless ATM. I really messed up, is there anyway to fix this? Thanks in advanced!
----EDIT----
I think I accidentally flashed the kernel like i would normally flash a rom.... cause i downloaded the .zip file(directly to my phone, not using a computer), than i tapped the download and it asked me if i wanted to open it up with rom manager, so i did. and i think rom manager thought i was flashing a rom, when i wasnt, it was a kernel.... am i screwed? or is there anyway out of this?
Do you know the exact kernel you flashed--where did it come from
Some you need to extract and push
Assume you just tried to boot into bootloader thru phone buttons
Does your pc recognize your phone when plugged in, if so can you open a command window and try to access phone as in adb devices then adb reboot bootloader
assuming you are familiar with sdk adb/fastboot comands
otherwise i don't know what else to say--may be bad--sorry
Came from an XDA thread
Here is where it came from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1708676 from "sun90" (half way down the page "CM9 KERNEL remix edition.zip - [Click for QR Code] (5.53 MB, 9 views) ")
i downloaded that straight to my phone and opened it up with Rom Manager, which i think the app took it as a rom, and installed it like a rom even though it was not a rom. I just tried to access it through adb, it comes up with no devices my PC does recognize it when i plug it in though...
Ive tried to get into bootloader tons of times, it just stays black... :'(
Thanks for your answer!
You flashed a galaxy s2 kernel on your one s? why would you ever think that was a smart thing to do?
Looking at the updater script in that zip it seems it wipes some partitions, the partitions on a SGS2 and the ONE S are different, so if that script accidentally wiped say the hboot partition, or some other critical-for-boot partition, you have a fully bricked phone.
For any devs that may know what partitions are what on the One S, the script wiped
mmcblk0p7, and wrote a zimage to mmcblk0p5
---EDIT---
Normally this is a cwm flashable zip on the Samsung Galaxy S II, which is why rom manager flashed it, as it met all the requirements, the only issue is, it was not made for the ONE S and probably overwrote some important things.
I tried for hours and hours to fix the same issue on a friend's One S (same symptoms, not same cause) to no avail. I tried QPST and telnet and a ridiculous amount of things. Had to bring it to the store and get a new one.
Good luck, but I don't believe there's anything you can do to fix it.
Just answered your question in the help thread, Didnt see this thread too !
Im afraid its not looking good, I think your best bet would be to call your provider and blame it on an OTA update.
And hope for the best
Alright, thanks for the help!
Well it looks like i bricked my phone than.... I thought that CM9 was only on the One S, so I just looked for the CM9 kernel, which obviously was for the sg2, i feel like such a dumb ass now! haha well thanks for all the help guys! ill be heading to the t-mobile store today to blame it on a OTA:]
yeah, others wont agree with what your about to do but........
just act like a complete noob, dont mention anything about software / firmware / ROMs / bootloader etc ect
just say your phone made a noise, you selected update and it died lol
good luck--I know it is heartbreaking
not sure of your situation with carrier, but you could go thru Retention if needed
Hi peeps.
i'm very new to all this but sort of know the basics
i'm running on Axiom now but tried to flash cm10 but after install i got a black screen so had to do a restore.
Today i just flashed venom and after the instal process is done, i hear the start up music but nothing on the screen.
I have had 3 other roms on my phone and never had a problem!
these are the steps i do
download rom - place on sd
put phone in recovery
reset factory
reset cache
install from sd
when it finish's reboot
blank screen.
Am i missing something?
Any help would be great and i can't post on the thread because i'm a noob with less than 10 and dont want to spam my way to the 10 :silly:
you are missing a lot, like reading the OP page and following install instructions
you missed separate flash of boot image and wiping system plus data and caches
i wipe system 3x to be safe

I've got a mac
not sure what fastboot is.
I'll check out the link, and thank you very much for trying to help:good:
sorry i do know what fastboot is, yes can get in to it. but ive gone from CWM to teamwin recovery if i go in to the recovery section but that wont let me do anything because the mount. cant even load the phone up
I don't know Mac commands
My idea is to install htc drivers and set up fastboot/adb on pc--the info can be found in dev section on rooting
then open a command window and and boot into fastboot and flash a new recovery, maybe stock per the link, clear storage and try to get mounted
how did you unlock bootloader--
you will need to do alot of reading on adb/fastboot and flashing roms--first step is to have backups of rom and sdcard
since i don't the Mac commands to do fastboot, someone else will chime in at some point
you can alos go to the noob section in Q&A and resubmit your issue
someone will work you thru this, but in meantime study up on android sdk/fastboot/adb. a necessity to get out of these problems
you are not bricked, just need the info and right steps to get back on track

Have an SGH-T959W on Wind? Don't worry, it is exactly the same as the SGH-T959V!

Hello Canadian users with SGH-T959W!
I spent some time the last few days comparing the kernel source for SGH-T959W and SGH-T959V, and found they are exactly the same (plus a few fixes for us on SGH-T959V from the SGH-T959W source!)!
This is good for you, because we have unofficial cm7, cm9, aokp, et alii... ports for the SGH-T959V.
Maybe a forum admin could update the Samsung Galaxy S 4G forum to also say: SGH-T959V & SGH-T959W
Technically, the only real difference is that the stock roms for the SGH-T959W will have different pre-installed software. The hardware of the SGH-T959W is the same as the SGH-T959V.
Enjoy!
Read this stuff to continue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28566711#post28566711
BTW, if anyone has an odin or kies tarball, please PM me!
This way I can verify if the bootloaders are different or not, and if they are different, I can make you guys custom Heimdall OneClick and Odin packages.

Sorry to bump this thread, but out of curiosity, what were the fixes you were able to implement after seeing the kernel source for the 959W?
If it's something you'd rather not explain and will just be rolling out in future kernels, no big deal; just curious.
Thanks.

The hardware is exactly the same. There is still a problem with the OTA Assert, meaning, how the rom knows if it is able to install on the phone or not during install from cwm. Also how it identifies itself to the play store.
I'm fixing this in the next cm9 unofficial release (coming soon, eta... a few hours, maybe).
The only real difference between SGH-T959V and SGH-T959W is the pre-installed/bundled software on the phone.
Everything else is one-to-one.
I'm still paranoid about bootloaders. So I'm still waiting for someone to post Kies or leaked tar.md5 for the SGH-T959W so that I can diff the bootloaders. If they are different, I will create new Heimdall OneClicks for SGH-T959W so that it is simple for you to go back to stock. See my current Heimdall OneClick thread to get an idea of what I mean.
On the other hand, we have some issues with our SGH-T959V bootloaders, and I have Unbrickable Mod on my phone. So, if the bootloaders are different, I would like to try flashing the SGH-T959W bootloaders to see if they work any better.
Also, there are a few fixes in the SGH-T959W kernel source that I will be incorporating into the current unofficial CM7 and CM9 ports I work on. Not having these fixes shouldn't have any negative impact on SGH-T959W.
I hope this info is informative. If not, ask more!
I have a SGH-T959W which seemed to have a bad flash already (from before.. and I am trying to revive it) on it (seems stuck on the cwm screen, and the system partition doesn't seem to have all the data that it needs to). Is there any way of getting the original ROM for this phone? Even if I install a cm build for the T959V, I don't get errors but its stuck in a cwm loop (keeps coming back to cwm).
When I try any of the one-clicks for the T959V, it succeeds on the kernel upload but always fails on the modem upload.
Where would you look for the Kies tar for this phone? Any possible way of getting the original ROM from a brand new phone? (any instructions for these would be great)
bhundven said:

This is annoying, sorry you are going through this. It sounds like something dorked your param.lfs.
I've had this happen to me, and it always appends 'bootmode=2' to the kernel command line. Only way to fix it is to flash a new param.lfs from the stock image...

...which brings me to this part. Someone told me that they have this image, but when I asked them to post it somewhere, I got no response.
Bug Wind and Samsung for a kies mini or a stock image that you can flash to the phone. Samsung is probably not going to be as helpful as Wind, so I'd try bugging the crap out of Wind.
Hopefully someone will get me the tar.md5 soon, and we can get you guys a one-click with bootloaders (which includes the param.lfs).
If you feel bold/brave, you can try flashing the bootloaders from my Stock oneclick in my signature.
Since it should be the same hardware it should work the same. Granted after flashing your phone will now be a SGH-T959V and not an SGH-T959W.
I hold no guarantee that it will work, and/or that it won't try to shoot you at your favorite new 3d film. <.< ... >.>
Thanks for the info about what might be causing the cwm loop issue
I think I will the one-click with bootloaders a try (will update this thread with the results). At this point I think I have exhausted all other options to revive the device.

Also, just to make sure you have tried different cables and computers.
Not being able to flash the modem sounds like a cable/computer issue.
If you have that issue while flashing bootloaders, you could hard-brick your phone.
The first time you flash with the oneclick, it will not flash bootloaders. The second time, the option to flash bootloaders opens up, but you still have to enable it.
Don't forget to read all the documentation in my thread before doing anything.
If you have any questions, ask before you do.

Enjoy!

Please be more specific as to which 'process' you followed and what you did.
Sorry I've been delayed in responding!
Again, if you can be more specific as to exactly what you did, I will be better prepared to help you.
It does look like it could be a cable/computer issue. I tried different cables and some of them didn't get as far as the modem (failed the kernel upload as well). Haven't got a cable which succeeds in the modem flash yet.
All of the driver stuff on windows makes me nervous though. Is there any way to flash this on linux. Does the one-click package work with fastboot or can fastboot be used to flash the individual pieces?

These phones do not have fastboot, but they have download mode.
Yes, you can do this from: Windows, Linux, or Mac OS X
If you still have problems with multiple cables, I highly recommend trying a different computer. I've had this problem myself before. It drove me nuts until I got a friends laptop and everything worked perfectly. My laptop's usb ports had gone bad for some unexplainable reason.
Check out the wiki pages we have written:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V
Steps I followed
managed to get my Wind SGH-T959W rooted and up and running with a unofficial CM9 build, but it took a bit of work.
Firstly, I tried just about every one-click solution out there, to no avail. It's possible SOC 1.7 with rattlethecage works, but I didn't have the patience to find out whether I simply had to wait a bit longer.
I followed this guide(whilst clenching every clenchable muscle I could consciously control):
http://www.galaxyforums.net/forum/of...ngerbread.html
The gist is, Odin 1.7, stock+voodoo for T959V, plus some update that I'm not qualified to describe. That should get you rooted and if that's all you're looking for, you'll have to suffer through a little T-Mobile branding on startup.
Once you got it all rooted, you'd think it'd be a good idea to toss sgs-ics on there, right? Well, no. After installing the 4G variant, it promptly set off into a boot loop which I'm again, unqualified to diagnose. The obvious solution was to try another team's version of ICS, which I indeed found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1730954
Barring some missing features, it sounds like a good alternative to sgs-ics. Though I had to go through one additional step, which I really, honestly assure you I was under-qualified to execute. When I tried to load Team Acid's CM9 r3 it gave me an assert on the updater-script, since the hardware didn't match up. Easy. Unzip the package, open up META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script, remove the first check. You know it's the same hardware, you don't need some stinkin' script to tell you it won't work.
So all said and done, I now have a Wind Mobile SGH-T959W running ICS 4.0.4 courtesy of bhundven, the Odin folks, Team Acid, and likely a slew of other contributors.
Thanks folks, and enjoy!
PS, if you want that tarball bhundven, send me a PM with some brief instructions, and hopefully you can help my fellow Winders.

Ok, this is really simple. I've explained it in quite a few threads in the Galaxy S 4G forums in General, Q&A, and the Dev forum. I'm going to explain this, but in a way to be more general. So I'm being verbose in case anyone else with a T959W happens to run across this and has not tried anything yet.
Again, I'm not good with windows at all, and I prefer it that way.
If you're on windows, check out our wiki:

There is tons of help there for setting up heimdall on windows with all the right drivers and such.
Once you have heimdall setup get AntonX's latest cwm zip for his kernel.
This kernel is a BML kernel, and this guide I am giving you right now will help you get cm9 installed which is an MTD kernel. You can find out more about BML vs. MTD here.
Once you have downloaded AntonX's kernel, extract the zImage from it and open up the terminal/cmd prompt and navigate to the directory you extracted the zImage to.
Put your phone into Download Mode and type the following in the command prompt:
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage
The heimdall program will flash this kernel+initramfs to the kernel partition and reboot the phone. Do not unplug the usb cable until you see the "Galaxy S" screen. When you see that screen, unplug the usb cable and remove the battery from the back.
Assuming you downloaded CM9 and put it on your sdcard already, you can get into recovery by holding the vol+ and vol-, then pressing the power button to turn the phone on. When you see the "Galaxy S" screen, let go of the buttons, and you should be in the recovery now.
This is where things get a little tricky. If you have not tried to do anything to your phone yet. This would be a great time to use the "Backup and Recovery" menu on CWM. Do a full backup.
The "assert 7" error that the previous person got was because the cwm install script (the updater-script) checks the already installed /system/build.prop's data against the "to be installed" build.prop to verify this rom can be installed. If it doesn't exist, then it moves forward.
So the first order of business is to wipe the /system partition. Go to "Mounts and Storage" and format the system partition.
Now go back to the main screen and do "Factory Reset/Wipe Data".
Now go "Install zip from sdcard" -> "choose zip from sdcard" -> and use the volume keys to select the zip file.
After the rom is installed, navigate back to the main screen and "Reboot the system now" if it doesn't reboot by itself.
When the phone reboots, because it is going from BML to MTD, it obviously can't just install the files to what would be an MTD partition if the kernel knows nothing about MTD. So it boots into the newly installed MTD kernel and continues the installation, which in the end will also reboot again.
The first boot is very slow. It is building a cache of all the pre-installed system applications. Let it sit for a while. I know it's tempting to go play with your phone right away, but resist if you can.
The next CM9 release will be on a different kernel, and albeit a much better rom.
I will also be adding OTA Asserts for SGH-T959W so that you will not have to wipe /system before installing the rom, but I do that still just for good measure. But this also means that your phone will work properly with the google play store.
If this still does not work, please let me know what went wrong and I will be happy to assist!

Then send your phone back to Mobillicity. Tell them that you don't know what a smart phone is and did something stupid to it. Go get yourself a nice clamshell phone.
I gave you explicit instructions that work for SGH-T959V and SGH-T959W. As a matter of fact, these instructions work on any "Galaxy S" phone, but you shouldn't flash just any other phone's rom to any other phone.
It just so happens that the SGH-T959V and SGH-T959W are the same exact hardware, just pre-packaged with different software and sold in different regions.
THEY ARE THE SAME PHONE!
With that, I am done with this thread. It was not meant for support! It was merely an announcement.
If you need any more help, please check out the Galaxy S 4G forums.
You can find plenty of directions that will work on either SGH-T959V or SGH-T959W on the wiki.
If you are looking for general information, look at the General forum.
If you need help or are asking a question, look at the Q&A (Questions and Answers) forum.
If you are looking to provide constructive feedback and/or logs to help development of ROMs and Kernels, check out the Developer forum. (Note, do not ask questions in the developer forum).

Full on Noob, need help if possible.

Okay so, I love my Infuse but getting really tired of not being able to download anything off the play store. Just tired of it's rather less than great performance right now as well. It's is running 2.3.6 GB and want to get this thing up to ICS if possible. Just something running 4.0 so I can use my phone for what I need too. It is not rooted, no cyanogenMod, NOTHING. As the title says, I'm a full on noob here and I apologize if all this is covered in other threads, however I have just gotten to the point where I have found myself even more lost than where I started on what I needed to do/get. If someone can, I will literally need this spelled out to me (no pun intended), in order of the steps I need to take with everything. I'm getting tired of confusing myself even more from all the different stuff I have seen all over the place and I know without some serious guidance, I will just brick my phone. Thanks for any help!
I understand this community can be a bit unorganized and confusing so I'll give you my process for rooting and installing custom firmware (there are other ways, but this works for my AT&T Infuse 4G SGH-i997).
First of all, no one uses ICS on the Infuse. There is a ROM, but it's underdeveloped because JB came out so quick. You will need to flash it to get to higher operating systems, but it is by no means a daily driver. Even JB is a little buggy compared to KitKat on the Infuse these days.
The first thing you want to do is root your phone and get a custom recovery.
There are more than a few options for rooting, but I prefer using ODIN (as I understand it, this is the tool Samsung uses to restore soft bricked phones). So this is a good thing to know how to do, in case you ever do soft brick your phone, you'll know exactly what to do.
Read the ODIN instructions in full as I will only briefly explain.
You're going to have to install Samsung drivers.
You'll be using UCLB3_Unbrick_root_1.1.zip. If you used UCLB3_Unbrick_1.1.zip it would just get you back to stock GB with no root added.
To put your phone into download mode, first turn off your phone. Plug a usb cable into your computer. Then with the phone off, hold down both volume buttons and plug the usb cable into your phone. A warning will come up and you push volume up to accept, realizing that you can easily soft brick your phone if you loose power or unplug during a download.
Once downloading is done, the phone will reboot and you'll be disappointed to see that nothing has changed. Except one small thing, you are now rooted and you should have an application called SuperUser that will allow you to do nifty and also dangerous things.
Now follow this step in the ODIN instructions to add the custom recovery (CWM = Clock Work Mod):
The version with root works exactly like the above version, but adds root. To add CWM recovery to the rooted version, download a custom Gingerbread kernel from HERE or HERE and flash the zImage using SGS Kernel Flasher (found in the Play Store) on the phone. If you go this route for root and CWM, your Custom Binary Download counter will not show any custom binary activity.
Click to collapse
If you follow the link in the second "HERE," you'll get the kernel I prefer since it was most recently updated. Scroll down the downloads section and grab "2013.04.30-CWM-Synthesis-1.2Ghz.zip." (1.2Ghz is stock for our processor, anything higher will be overclocked which I don't recommend).
Extract that and grab the zImage file in the update folder. You're going to copy this to your phone in a second.
But first you need SGS Kernal Flasher, you can get it off the playstore, but I despise having to log in to an OS I'm going to write over in less than a minute so I download the APK from here. Hopefully you know how to install APKs from your SD card and that you'll have to check install from unknown sources.
Now flash the zImage using SGS Kernel Flasher. Your phone will reboot and hang on the Samsung logo and a creepy voice is going to tell you about how she's partitioning your phone and installing Voodoo lag fix. This is normal. Eventually your phone will reboot back into GB and you'll be ready to flash any ROM of your choice by rebooting into recovery.
You reboot into recovery by holding the volume up and volume down button while powering on the phone. This is different than download mode and will take you do a new screen that you control with the volume keys.
You'll be using this to put new software on your phone.
Now you can bassically follow the instructions for getting to CyanogenMod 11 (Kit Kat) from GB.
The first bullet is what I just explained in detail.
Note that I didn't include the links in these instructions, just follow the link above to get to the original post.
Obtain CWM, this can be done using Jscotts Odin back to stock (Follow instructions and use SGS kernal flasher to obtain CWM)
Run Qksters IMEI backup script here
Make certain you are on ICS, this can be done by flashing Entropy's CM9
It is recommended now that you remove your SD Card
CWM: Wipe Cache / Factory Reset
Install ROM: Scroll down for downloads sectoion
... The package will start to install..
... Phone will reboot into the install screen again...
... Continue to install [Automatically] If not manually flash again
... Phone will reboot again and be at the recovery screen...
Install Gapps: Here - Working swipe!
CWM: Wipe Cache Partition
CWM: Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot
Click to collapse
To be clear, when you flash a ROM, it won't be like flashing the zImage (that was just to get custom recovery). To flash the CM9 ROM or Qksters IMEI backup script for example, you leave the rom in the .zip file and simply put it on your SD card. Once in the recovery screen, you select "Install Update from ZIP" and navigate to the particular ROM you wish to install.
Also after updating to a higher version of Android, your phone will sometimes hang on the install screen for a long time. If it does for more than five minutes, it's safe to pull the battery and try flashing again (and sometimes necessary).
After flashing Entropy's CM9, you will be on ICS, you can use if you want but I don't advise it. You should continue with the instructions and update to KitKat after getting to ICS. I recommend Scott's CM11 (what I linked you to) or Scott's BeanStalk (find it in the Android Development Section).
Lately I've been using CyanFox and I have to say, it's the most stable ROM I've used in a while.
If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask.
Best of luck and happy flashing,

Thank you muchness!
Thank you very much for helping me in this mess! I greatly appreciate it. I love my Infuse and do not want to get rid of it quite yet so hopefully this will help! I tried to install CM11 and even CM10 at least half a dozen times each, following step by step the instructions that I've found on the thread but all the times I have the same issue:
after the zip rom update and the reboot, the bootloader keeps launching the CWM recovery. I see the logo, the progress bar and then I land in recovery
I don't get any kind of error (and I don't know where to look for to get more information than what's shown on the screen) and I'm just stuck in the recovery and I have to start from scratch every time using Odin all the way down.
I'm not interested in Gapps so, at the beginning I tried without installing them but then I tried also using the appropriate gapps as indicated in the procedure. Either way I didn't get any solution to my problem.
Do you have an idea? Is there a way for me to provide more information or debug?
Thank you!

bokonon9, thank you! You're guide has been precious to me.
Unfortunately I only succeeded installing ICS, infact I get till here:
I tried to install CM11 and even CM10 at least half a dozen times each, following step by step the instructions that I've found on the thread but all the times I have the same issue:
after the zip rom update and the reboot, the bootloader keeps launching the CWM recovery. I see the logo, the progress bar and then I land in recovery

i would say go back to stock gb with odin and basically start over but with ics i always let it reboot to get a "feel" for it then i reboot to recovery and wipe basically everything then flash the next level of android which should be cm 10 then i let that boot then repeat that to get to kitkat 4.4.3 CarbonRom....sometimes you have to flash the same rom twice to get it to flash tho
I already tried all that and I can't figure out a way out ... I'm really banging my head against the wall

CWM will not install over the Android recovery 3e ...

I have a Samsung Infuse that at one time had JB on it.
I went back to Foyo for several months.
Now I want to try KK.
My Infuse is rooted but nothing will install - I get "failed to verify while file signature"
everytime I try to use the Android 3e recovery.
For the life of me I cannot get CWM installed on this phone.
How can it be done? I've tried Odin but don't work either.
Help
Carl
Also tried the "modded 3e recovey" copying a recovery file to /system/bin.
I can do this but still have no CWM as the recovery menu.
So, whats happening is that Android system recovery <3e> recovery menu cannot be replaced
nor will it let me install a zip file. Every time I try to install CWM or any other
zip file, I get:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed

I am not familiar with that method to install CWM. Usually one would flash an infused kernel via ODIN. Are you AT&T or Rogers? That would determine your method.
On mobile now so myself looking it up is difficult, but what you need should be in either the General or Development forum. Try searching for "infused CWM".
Sent from my LG-D520 using XDA Free mobile app
Update:
Easiest method would probably be option D:

This will give you Stock Gingerbread with root, and red CWM. What kind of problems were you having with Odin?

Your diagnosis was spot on.
What I had done when I bricked my Samsung Infuse months ago was that I had used PHONE_UCLB3.tar.md5 for PHONE selection in ODIN. I had JB running but the performance was poor and messing with it
I had bricked my phone. Then when I was able to recover back to Froyo, I said f*ck it and quit messing with it.
Doing what I did several months ago to unbrick my Infuse locks in the Android recovery menu.
Yesterday I was experimenting and used option C to get it working now -- i.e. using I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-extras.tar.md5 for PHONE. I suppose either option C or D would be OK as those provide the red recovery menu for Froyo. I was scimming over all the various texts and had missed the details.
Boy this stuff can be complicated unless one stays with it - AND READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY.
I'd made a lot of notes when I did this months ago but still it was vague.
Now its coming back to me and I think I'll start hanging out here to learn more about these ROMs.
Not knowing which is better, I chose to install Carbon Kit Kat nightly on my Samsung Infuse. I noted that Bean Stalk did not have any
recent versions and just assumed there was more activity with Carbon. Is Carbon as good as it gets or are there better choices????
Thanks
Carl

It's all subjective, but with the time I used it I think Carbon is as goods as it gets.
There's CyanFox, which I didn't try, which is still quite young. CM11 and BeanStalk have been getting updates, it's just their key developer is absent right now. But there is a bug with CM11 and BeanStalk that leaves ADB unable to work. If you plan on using ADB, I would stay away from those two. Other than that, I did like the BeanStalk experience when I used it, but in the end wished I switched to Carbon earlier.

Disable voodoo lagfix and you should be good to go. If not, try downloading a different kit Kat Rom (one with a working link).
