FREE apps possible?

Like the iPhone, when you jailbreak it, people who cracked the app can download it for free. Can we also do same?

Support your devs, apps and roms. You have no clue how much time goes into either, the least you can do is pay/donate for their hundreds of hours of work. Its possible but me/or probably anyone else that knows how to do it isnt gonna tell you. I've even donated to developers who do good work, and I'm a developer.

Anyone immoral and unethical enough to crack and post "free" apps on the internet is also immoral and unethical enough to include a virus, steal your identity info, or anything else. One way or another, you end up paying for that kind of stuff. It is much cheaper and easier in the long run to support the developers so that they have the incentive to continue to develop.

the only place i used pirated software with apps is on my iPhone, but i would only try them for no more than a day and then i would choose to buy it or not due to the fact that theirs no refund policy with ios

When I got my first android phone almost 2 years ago, I [plead the fifth]. Within 20 minutes I felt so guilty that I immediately bought the app and donated an extra $10 to the developer. I don't understand how you can do such a thing, Android even lets you return the app if it wasn't what you were looking for!

You can not publish too an app that has too be bought

I thought about making it configurable to switch from cartoon transform sound to the movie one. I had a version that was my kid saying "doot doot doot doot" which was awesome for no one but his parents. Other ideas? I guess I could just make it so that you could point it to your own sound file easy enough.

or make a free version for xda users or separate the app on the market with a donation app for the main app

If the app or live wallpaper is worth it, also if i keep it on my phone for more then 4 days, yes i will hit up their donation link.
Most of them are .99-1.49.......that in no means will break me.
Or link the donation in the settings menu of your app.

I never made much with the donation approach. The freemium (free version / premium paid version) model works pretty well though.

Haha, I guess I'd have to come up with some more features before that was an option. How about embedding AdMob and the like? Any experience/luck with that model?

Depends on the type of app. I'm guessing your user wouldn't spend much time in the app other than changing a few settings. I have an app that's similar (basically just an on/off switch for a function), and it makes essentially nothing from adds. It has around 25k users, but over the last four months or so I've made about $15 from ads.
On the other hand, ads can be an incentive to upgrade to the premium, ad-free version.
I'd say add extra sound effects, remove the ads, and sell the premium version for a buck. In my experience, one dollar is the psychological barrier where the user has to be really convinced how awesome something is to spend any more.

Thanks for the tips! Good point about not spending time in the app. When enabled my service launches itself on startup so I was thinking I could throw an add in users face then.
FWIW I tried the flip side of AdMob (advertising through them) and didn't notice even the slightest bump in sales. Have you had any better luck with that?

Can u add the ability to choose our own sound?

Just a suggestion, perhaps have as free the bare basic 1 sound, one function, then premium gives more sounds and the ability to add your own. And then possibly add sounds to more functions (if possible) such as screen on, or hinge up or down, stuff like that.

Good suggestions. I'm thinking I'll def'ly add more sounds since I've had several requests for that now. I'm trying to decide if the set-your-own-sound feature should belong to a new app, since this one is transformer themed, and that would make it more general purpose.

Never tried advertising through admob. If I ever make enough money from admob to buy a campaign I might try advertising. Might take awhile, lol.
I'd be careful about introducing ads outside of your own UI. Personally, I don't think an app that I'm not actively using should have the right to show me ads. I know apps have gotten banned from the market for doing similar. There's even some company that offers a drop in solution for creating notification bar ads outside of your app; seems a bit shady to me.

Well well well we just found out all your data is going to an Amazon server if you updated to the new 2.3.4 EVO and Sensation users. How long you use an app, What app you are using, The fact that you are rooted, the location you are using it from etc etc (without QIC) is being uploaded to an Amazon server un-encrypted. How's that for security? However thanks to Synergy team developer TrevE users of Synergy and the upcoming Eternity ROM from Virus will be secure against this obvious infringement of your privacy. What is HTC up to? And furthermore what other manufacturers are using similar methods? One thing Trev pointed out was your warranty can be voided immediately. They know you are rooted! The repercussions of this are astounding and frankly I am proud to be breaking this story with all of the work I have done here recently speaking out when I find are data being wrongly horded and used in nefarious ways. Kudos to TrevE and Virus for showing me this and helping the community find a way to put a stop to it. This is an ongoing game people and it is the aftermarket guys like Team Synergy and even journalist like myself who are a pretty good line of defense when crap like this comes up. They have your IMEI they know your location from the cell towers in hex and they know you are rooted. The best way to defend yourself is by rooting and flashing these guys ROMS period and that's a win win. Top of the line performance and defense against heinous invasion of your privacy.

I dont think so...I am curious to know also....What are they doing with this data that they have NOT asked us to collect.

I think the op is going way overboard assuming these STATISTICS are being used " nefariously " sure, point it out, bit don't start throwing out accusations without evidence that harmful acts are being perpetrated and scaring the community into a state of paranoia.

OK, I'm calling BS, or at the very least calling it inaccurate. If you look up those IPs, they belong to amazonaws.com. If you look this up, you get Amazon Web Services. It's basically a bunch of cloud/database services they offer, for people and other companies to utilize. So while it may go to an Amazon server, it is most likely not actually going to Amazon. It is still just HTC, nothing different, just a different server. Also, WHO THE HELL CARES? It's not like it is constantly sending this data all the time. In fact, I'd be willing to bet this only gets sent when you actually submit one of those 'Tell HTC' forms that show up sometimes.

Well, one more spying us is not a problem

What an interesting post. Is there any kind of independent watchdog group who goes over all the code in these roms to see what is actually going on? I assume it's all open source, so they can't really hide what they're doing. How it works in the real world, however, I don't know.

For the record I would never post anything that I wrote here on XDA i'm not responsible for the post. To the people who were interested in the information imparted in said post. Glad it helped. I don't necessarily believe it either but I wonder if you guys even clicked on the link because there's actually a bunch of source there, and explanations of what happens when you delete certain files that are harvesting info, and the source code that was used to "defeat" the info harvesting behaviors. I think this is interesting at the very least, if not true even if it was definitely presented in a sensational way.
I don't particularly care WHERE the data is going, I want to know WHY it's being collected in the first place, especially if it is not vital to the functioning of our mobile devices, which it seems pretty clear to all of us, it isn't. Even if YOU don't care about your info and data being harvested by google, some of us do and many of us find it very disconcerting.
Also, a guy with 14 posts trolling and asking where "XDA is heading" am I the only one that appreciates how ridiculous that is?

Personally, I'd never send my phone to anyone. I'd say thats a reasonable charge for the service, but what if he bricks it? Better yet, what if he KEEPS it?

In other field (cooking for example), I'm sure I'd be considered as a lazy bastard. I bet many people around here are in the exact same situation.

The problem is he is making money off of work that is not his. This right here is the main reason developers are starting to keep things to themselfs and select freinds and not releasing it to the public.
Guys when you see something like this just report it to the site.

This is pretty much the same as people paying to get their PSPs, DSes, PS3s, Xboxes or anything else, hacked/modified. He's not selling the mods and roms, he's just selling his service. I feel that it's okay.

This reminds me of people who sell instructions with rooting tools or xbox, wii, psp mod files that they have found online for free but this guy isn't actually selling the free software he made sure he mentioned you are buying his services which would be rooting and hooking up the phones for lazy asses who don't want to take the few extra minutes to google the stuff they need (which I think is half the fun; getting to know about my phone and seeing it do stuff that the manufacturer says can't be done...) but anyway it's their money if they want to pay for something that can be easily done I guess that's on them. BUT I would think better of the seller if these tools he is using were developed by him instead of using the tools that other developers had put alot of time and work into and the developers themselves give it away because that's what they love to do and aren't getting a dime for all of the work they've done and then the help they freely give when answering our questions over and over for people like him to turn around and profit off of their hard work that they aren't even profiting off of. It makes me so grateful that most people are not like this seller. He really is profiting off of other people's hard work that he got for free which is totally greedy and all of that kind of stuff.

Yeah well it doesn't fly here. You use the work of others and charge for it and things happen. One should never steal a hackers work lol
And a great example of why some of the greatest mods are no longer posted publicly and only shared privately between trusted developers.

As far as I know, developers usually allow such uses. I'm sure they are well aware of the possibilties offered by their licences. I personnaly use a BSD licence for most of my programs and encourage those behaviors.

No I don't personally. There is a big difference. They are not using someone else hardworking that is given away for free. There are rules you agree to when you join the site. And that includes asking to use the work of others. And no developer will allow someone to make money off of a tool they give away for free

the ONLY way i could see what he is doing as ok is if he was donating a portion of the profits to the devs of the work he uses.

I know what it means. Been doing this for many years. You should learn what respect is. That is what developers deserve and it is not given when you steal their free software to charge for.
In the end this has been covered many times. If someone is charging for the work of others then report them and they will be banned from here. As for other sites just report them as these devices are released with free licences charging for them is illegal.

Android APP Developer needed 50/50 revenue split

$150 Good Faith base once project is started and then Revenue Share 50/50 Split
Already have desktop website with 10,000 Members , 100,000 Monthly Uniques to our website and 1 million page views...so a Base of Buyers is already in Place on top of Android Market
Fuel Stations locator Map (and list view) ..with Prices
User should see x amount of Stations in a select-able radius
User should either be able to Login/or register
User should then be able to Post Prices
Members can have Favorites list
odds and ends
Already have database ..and hopefully you can just reuse some coding from the websites pages
I have neither the talent , time , energy or money to do this on my own.. essentially looking for someone to develop and maintain the APP side of our Business as their "baby" and simply handle the odd and end issues that arise , basic maintenance , keeping the APP updated as Android is updated etc ...
I provide database / data / members TRAFFIC ..
So a nice 50/50 split

That's kind of funny lowend.. I am offering to pay for a service and your not sure if that's allowed.. but it is allowed to ask fro free work on xda..(handful of developers and a whole bunch of us looking for /demanding the next free release of xyz ..me included)
I know what you mean though I didn't see a "marketplace" or" Developers for Hire"..so posted here and let the Moderators sort it out.. what ever they need to do is fine..
