[Q] Nexus S 4G Bricked and Power button wont work. - General Questions and Answers

Hi, Let me first off say I have looked through the forums and couldn't find someone who has a similar problem...I own a Nexus S 4G from Sprint and I was running an ICS rom on it. Yesterday, the power button stopped working (acts as if it is always being pressed. I take the battery out and put it back it and it turns on automatically). I can get it into fast boot but once I do, the volume keys don't work and the power button still doesn't work. I tried UNROOTING it with this, http://theunlockr.com/2011/01/20/how-to-unroot-the-nexus-s/ , got half way through and realized it was for the Nexus S. I know stupid mistake. But now I can't download ROM manager let alone any app. I can't exchange files from my phone to my computer and vise versa. I have No 3g signal (It's on Airplane mode and I tried turning it off but it wont turn off at all) . Power button STILL doesn't work and it's just a piece of crap right now. PLEASE HELP restore it back to original out of the box, unrooted, stock. Is it just a sitting duck and will I have to buy a new phone? Please help.
I have tried these to unroot my phone with little success.

Did you put the battery back in?

I upgraded from JF 1.41 RC30 with no problem, Radio and all, good luck!

So far you are the only person with this problem so we are running through the basics.
Did you get any errors or messages during the update? Did the phone run out of battery mid update? Did anything odd or unusual happen?
quick question in while in the topic, had he done a FULL nandroid backup and was able to atleast get to boot screen would he be able to restore his phone? just a quick questions because to this day i have no idea how the nandroid thing works i cant do it on my x64 vista either and dont see how it comes in handy lol. Sorry just trying to fig it out.
after i tried to install the radio update it showed some sort of chip with an arrow and then it froze for over 10 mins so i ended up taking out the battery
@zgjbeta Yes. If you can get to the blinkin android screen, your not really bricked. Nandroid would fix it right up.
If it wont even turn on, like your case. I dono what to tell you.
For starters, try to connect it to a wall outlet to make sure its not the battery.
Also tell us exactly what happened during the update process.
EDIT: I read your most recent post. That's strange because everyone gets the chip thing, you shouldve tried home + back or menu + green + red.
One of those wouldve most likely worked.
Good luck.
Also maybe try to take it out again and put it back in.
I had the chip and arrow after the radio update, I didn't take the battery out, started pressing random keys, lol... and then it went away and booted back to a JF recovery style screen. Pressed home + back and it rebooted to a stuck flashing android. Then did call+menu+end to reboot and it has worked fine ever since.
There is definitely something whacky going on...
yes i tried to do the home key plus end and camera plus end options while in that chip state but didnt do anything so i resolve to take out the battery and it wont turn on again. i also tried all the button reset combo nothing happens
If it wont even turn then there is really nothing that can be done. Another thing I would try is if you know someone else with a G1 try their battery.

Also try cleaning the battery contacts in the phone and on the battery. This happened to one of my dumbphones once - cleaned out the battery contacts and it worked again. Bizzare situation, simple solutions first.
You might've turned it off while it was writing a vital file. Thus your phone might be bricked.
Here's an idea - sent it back to T-Mobile/HTC - and I don't think they will notice you violated your warranty until it's too late (they have to fix your phone to find out) so you could just refuse to pay and have them send it back to you.
I too saw the chip with the arrow thing, so that makes 3 people in this thread. It happened when I did the radio update. Anyway, in my case, I held down the recovery mode keys for a while and it went to the menu. Then I just rebooted and everything was great. Glad I didn't take out the battery (I considered it).
I had the chip and just waited and it took care of itself. Just be patient people.
plug in the wall charger, wait 10 seconds, then hold the red power button for 3-5 seconds then release, it should turn on
i tried that didnt work anymore advice?
also is there any way to run diagnostics of this phone to pc to make it work?
If the phone won't turn on, go back to the T-Mobile store and ***** em out. Not much else to say if we can't even get power to it.

[Q] Bricked Nexus S. Faulty power button?

Hi guys.
I noticed a few weeks ago my power button started to work when it felt like it. Sometimes it would be fine, other times it would take about 30 presses before it registered I was attempting to use it..
Now it has completely failed.
The phone is currently off, whenever I try to press the power button it never turns on. But as soon as I attach a charger to it (AC and USB), without even pressing the power button, the phone vibrates and the google screen flashes up, but never gets past that screen.
If I hold the volume up button as I attach a charger it attempts to enter recovery/bootloader mode(?), but freezes as soon as it comes on. No buttons work and it requires a battery pull to turn it off.
The phone is also not recognised by my computer, or by odin, or anything.
Not really sure what to do. Would try and flash things back to stock, but can't find a way to do that. Not really sure it would help either?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Oh and I looked through current threads and searched on google but I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem :/
It seems, your power button is constantly pressed. Maybe you dropped it? You should try to carefully move the button in every direction instead of pressing it, hopefully it clicks back to its right place. Other option is taking it back to the shop, and get it repaired. It's a hadware problem, so you won't be able to use neither recovery nor the ROM. The bright side is, that probably it's an easily repairable problem, and won't take too long

Cheers for the reply
Just in case anyone else has this problem. My situation looked horrible.. but I brought a USB Jig from eBay and after months of problems. I got into recovery mode and flashed back to stock. Everything is perfect now

Stock ICS has a feature to wake the screen using the vol rocker.
And you can search the market for "Lock screen widget" to shut the screen.
In this case you minimize the need for the power button..That what I was doing..

phone wont even turn on... WTF

how do all.... nexus s I9023
i have just purchased a some what lovely google nexus s I9023
working fine for an hour or so...
i had a little pop up asking me to update...
i thought OK... sure why not...
having done so phone worked fine for an additional 20 mins...
then phone froze... i took the battery out and started it up again...

iv trawled every forum possible since this has happened...
now the PHONE WILL NOT EVEN TURN ON...
the phone is completely stock no mods or addon's to it!
im at the end of my tether.. SOME ONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!
Hold volume up + power after reinserting the battery and putting it on charge. Do you enter bootloader mode? And what happens if you click recovery?
done the hold volume up and press power...
still no joy unresponsive!!
when it does work after 50 attempts of taking the battery out and putting it back in and doing volume and power
it turns on.. scroll to recovery.. it turns off google screen pops on...
then a Green android lying on his back appears with its stomach open showing white blocks and a explanation mark above it!
IM PUZZLED!!!!!
it then resets it self going back to being unresponsive!!
HELP!!!!
Give this a shot.
Also, could it be a power button issue? And that android screen is the splash for stock recovery. You have to press vol. up + power again to get past it, beyond this you can do a factory reset and similar magic. However you likely don't want this, and on the screen where you chose to enter recovery, you'll likely want to use fastboot to unlock the phone (which will wipe all personal data) and then flash a stock ROM again. At this point i would advise lots and lots of reading.
If it's less than a year old, i would be calling samsung though. If it is a new phone i would definitely do this first. Do not unlock unless you have no chance of going through warranty. Will need to know the exact status of the phone for best advice here.

[Q] Im having issues with my phone right now.

Hey guys i have a samsung infuse 4g and one day it just turned off now it goes on and goes to the samsung logo then goes of and back to the samsung logo over and over again. i take the battery out and put it back in then it just does the same.
I really need help here. Its my moms phone and shes freaking out cause she cant afford a new phone so I need to get this fixed or atleast find out whats wrong with it. I let the battery die all the way down but still same issue.
This is a common problem. You need to get the phone into download mode and use either Odin or heimdall to revert the phone to stock. There are several links to several guides on the site, and the super everything thread has most of them. Search is your friend.
My Infuse is Stalking Beans
the phone wont even go into download mode because it shuts off too fast
Have either Heimdall or Odin on your PC ready to go with the correct drivers installed. Then take the battery out. Plug in the USB connection to the PC (preferrably a USB connection in the back of the PC). Hold Volume UP and Volume DOWN (but not the Power Button). Then insert the Battery, this will put you into download mode. Flash the "back to stock" of your choice.
If this doesn't work, you have a power button issue. Search for that fix then.
it's prolly the power button loop..look in the general thread and the q/a, M
Ended up smacking the phone around a little bit and fixed it right up xD good times.

Take out the battery for a few seconds and put it back; then while holding Volume UP (+) press the Power Button.
See what happens...

Nothing. Happens it don't light up or power on at all. It is not reconized on computer either. It's hard bricked.
Make sure the Battery is charging...
How can I make sure the battery is charging when no lights come on at all? All I do know is I had it plugged in for a while yesterday and it got really warm. But no lights whatsoever. The screen doesn't light up at all neither does the led.
??????
There are no notification lights on the D720, but when you plug it in with a charger, you should see a battery bar on the display.
Other than that, you are probably right about hard-brick.
I, luckily, never had a "brick" on the Nexus S, so someone else with experience may wanna chime in. But Google and YouTube are your friends.
Sorry...

Please help me, i have the same problem
been awhile since any action here. saved mine with JIG method once but this time it won't work ??!(why) , in search of a solution again! -> hardbrick #2 on this device!
You guys can try a USB Jig. If that does not help, I think JTAG is what you need.
Jesus... just to revive this thread (and this concept of hard bricking), I think I just accidentally bricked mine as well.
Here's exactly what I did:
One moment, it was working spectacularly - fully stock, but unlocked. I had just listed it on eBay, too.
So I ran a factory reset on it (from the Settings menu), also "erase USB storage".
Then, after it shut down for the reboot, I pulled the battery.
...
That was it. Now it doesn't turn on for anything whatsoever. No device detected on USB when plugged into PC. Remove, replace battery, hold VolUp+Power, nothing. Plug into power adapter, nothing. Nothing at all.
But the back does get lukewarm after a minute or so, as if it's alive in the head but frozen, unable to start the bootloader.
WTF? I also have 2 more of these Nexus S 4G's, and both of them seem to have Flash storage chips that exhibit the same behavior when their chips are placed in (this) working motherboard. They can't boot. When I try to "hot-flash" it by booting the bootloader then swapping the Flash chips, they can't flash anything (this is probably to be expected). So, if I can get my ONCE-WORKING phone back to life, there's a good chance I can get another working as well (one just has a cracked glass, otherwise working mainboard & peripherals).
It's old, yes, but it's a damn shame to E-waste these things for a stupid software problem like this!
