i have a samsung captivate with android 2.2 froyo and i want to go to 2.3.5 gingerbread. found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1300843
my question is which should i download with bootloaders or without bootloaders?
kies mini will not update me and even bricked me so i dont want to ever use kies mini again. i have both odin one click and odin 1.7. also have heimdell one click and prefer to use it but cant find a stock 2.3.5 rom that will boot up on my phone. i have downloaded 2 and used heimdell but didnt work. heimdell is just so much easier but i will use odin if needed. i do want a stock rom nothing fancy since phone modding is a little new to me. i have a computer degree but phones are a whole different world lol...

ok the link above isny working
If you are going from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3, you will need a Odin or Heimdall file that contains the bootloaders. They changed between 2.2 and 2.3, and you have to have them to make 2.3 run properly.
I would suggest this UCKH3 one-click Heimdall solution. It will flash everything you need, and you don't have to open anything else to do it.
Just be aware that it won't have ClockworkMod Recovery installed, so you'll have to flash a different kernel or use a one-click with CWM baked in later.
I would recommend flashing the lastest build (KK4) from Samsung. Here is a link to Odin one clicks and Heimdall one clicks with gingerbread bootloaders.
You must have Gingerbread bootloaders to run Gingerbread roms, however they are backwards compatible with Froyo and Eclair so you won't have to flash bootloaders again.

Alright so I had successfully rooted my vibrant at one point and was fine with using hybrid R4.. I then flashed to 2.2 froyo, then tried to go back down to 2.1.. forgot to flash kernel and then had to use Odin 1.3 to revert back to stock. used odin with T959UVJI6... now how do i reroot my phone? it doesnt have the update.zip anymore, and i really dont think its rooted... whats the best way to root this guy now that i have i used odin to flash back to a almost, if not completely stock rom? i have tried my original method of superoneclick to which now doesnt seem to work...
Dont help this A-Hole
because I wanted to try out a gingerbread rom and i figured that since I was at stock I would open up Kies to see what kind of update it would say for the phone, but when I looked at it, Kies doesnt show anything. I mean it reads and finds my phone no problem but where it shows "Current Firmware Version" its just empty.
I remember previous times I did it, it would still show Version 2.1 and ask me if i wanted to update to 2.2.
So I guess im asking, if I should be concerned with this?
I did use Odin to go back to 2.1 btw
which odin?
odin3 one click? the ATT one? the one that obviously wouldnt work with Rogers keis?
or odin3 flashing utility with the Rogers Stock roms in my sig?
keis is crap anyway. if you want 2.2 flash my 2.2 stock. but dont bother if you are going to flash gingerbread. avoid 3e recovery, but theres a fix for that too in my sig.

Actually it was yours in your sig. It was the only one I have been using since I found it at like the beginning of the year. You are right Kies is crap but I keep it because id like to give Gingerbread stock a shot once it comes out before flashing to gingerbread roms. But now that I think about it, I think it might be that kies had an update when i opened it since its been so long from the last time i used it. So it was probably that.
And thanks I will look at that 3e recovery before i start flashing.
Just got an Infuse a few days ago. It was running froyo 2.2.1 I believe. It was on AT&T, but I wanted to unlock to use with StraightTalk on AT&T. I did get the unlock code and rooted it. I then upgraded it thru Samsung's site to the 2.3.6 Gingerbread. In the process of this, I managed to lock up my laptop when installing Kies and had all kinds of issues. Needless to say, my persistance paid off after spending several hours reading here. Got it all up and working on ST.
Since today was my day off, I decided I wanted to remove the AT&T bloatware from it so off to googleville again and ended up here. Started reading and then found that when I did the Gingerbread update, my phone was unrooted again. Needless to say, after reading around here all day, I decided I wanted to give ICS a try and have been reading about ParanoidAndroid. I am now on pg 31 of 62 and am getting nowhere fast.
I don't want to ask for spoonfeeding, but I am confused about alot of this coding stuff. I have had some flashing experience years ago in ....well, don't guess I want to mention that, but anyhow, it seemed overwhelming until I got my feet wet in it. I have to say, this GB bootloaders, Aroma, non-Aroma, cm7, cm9, red CWM, and blue CWM has me more confused than a fat kid in a candy shop in some foreign country.
In all honesty, I think I could read here for a week and still not be sure on which way I need to go. As I said, I am interested in ICS (ParanoidAndroid) but don't know if I have the GB bootloaders or not and not sure where to start at. The firmware version os showing 2.3.6, Baseband I997UCLB3, Kernal version 2.6.35.7-I997UCLB3-CL977492, and finally a Build of Gingerbread.UCLB3. Yesterday, I was using SuperOneClick and 010 editor. Now I am reading about Odin, Heimdall, and several other programs that I don't know which to start with.
Could somebody please help out this fat kid in a foreign candy shop? I don't even think I can find a Hershey bar. Thanks.

I used Kies mini. I d/l Kies and the file and followed the instructions at Samsung's own website. samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00045587&fm_seq=46249
Be patient... there are a lot of helpful people here and qkster is among the best.

This method will give you the gb boot loaders.
Your next step is to flash a custom kernel.
Follow my signature links to the heimdall method of kernel flashing.
If you are more comfortable with odin, jscott has made some great packages also.
Once you have flash the kernel, just boot into cwm and go from there. If you wanted paranoid, then flash the ROM in cwm.
If you use a gb kernel, for now, it will be red letter.
If you use heimdall jt ics kernel, you will see blue letter.
I rec the jt kernel as you are planning to go ics
Gl
edit:
this is the ics kernel I was referring to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25526654&postcount=3
flash in download mode.
boot into cwm -3 fingers technique - flash the ics rom you want - follow the OP instructions
Have a t959V SGS4G with Froyo. I rooted it, and unlocked it. I then attempted to flash AntonX's "Basic with a Twist SGS4G KJ6 1.1.3" kernel using the SGS Flash tool. It seems that this Kernel is a Gingerbread Kernel, which I flashed on a Froyo system.
When it rebooted after that flash, the screen became multicolored, almost like static and gibberish, and is not boot looping. It wont get past the initial Galaxy S 4G splash screen. I tried the multiple means of accessing download mode with no success. I did just order a jig, but that wont be here for a few days.
Prior to flashing the new kernel, I did backup the old kernel, so its on the SD card.
Any thoughts on how to recover?
Many thanks!!
Use the guide in the second link of my signature and flash with bootloaders. You do not have GB bootloaders which is the reason for the rainbow screen.

ks for your reply. That guide is impressive. i can see a lot of work was put intot hat. It looks like I would take this option:
2.This guide can be used if you flashed a ROM made for a different model phone (i.e. Vibrant):
----> Follow Directions for Flashing WITH BOOTLOADERS
However, I didnt flash the whole ROM. Just the kernel. So, I have aapparantly a Gingerbread based Kernel with a Froyo Rom. In this case, do I want to go to a FROYO kernel, or go to a Gingerbread (or a JB??) ROM?
I have the ultimate goal of going to a JB ROM. I'm starting to think I cant just flash the JB ROM over the Froyo, or can I? I'll have to peruse the forums a bit to learn more about that.
Finally - I cant seem to access download mode via any of the methods presented. I ordered a jig, so when that arrives, I'll follow the guide and either downgrade the kernel or upgrade the ROM.
This devide seems a bit more complicated to work with than the Nexus S that I was previously toying with.
Thanks for your input and assistance.
What are you doing?! Stahp!
You are still in Froyo? Why not migrate to Gingerbread?
By the way we only have ICS, for now.

You will need to follow the complete guide including flashing bootloaders if you want to upgrade to GB or ICS. No you cannot flash GB or ICS from Froyo recovery because of the bootloaders. As mentioned above, we do not have JB. If you want to flash back to froyo there is a KD1 One-Click FB put together. Let me know if you want to stay on Froyo for some reason and I will find the link for you.

Many thanks. I dont want to stay on Froyo. I'm helping a friend with this device, and she had never updated from Froyo. I'll take a look at moving into Slim ICS, since theres no JB for this device, unless anybody has any better suggestions.
This whole problem started for me after I realized that to get ROM Manager working on this phone, I had to go to a different Kernel. I didnt realize that the kernel I picked had the wrong boot loaders, and Voila. A rather unattractive rainbow screen. As soon as I can get into download mode, I'll jump on this.
I thank everyone again for their input.

ROM Manager does not work for this device and can cause issues.
When my wife first got her infuse i rooted it and left it on 2.2.1. I think its about time to update it . I was going to just odin up to whatever the latest package was but there is so many stock threads on here its crazy. I was going to use [ROM] [2.3.6] Heimdall One-click Back-To-Stock UCLB3 but the heimdall drivers keep failing.
So should i just unroot and do the over the air updates till its caught up and if i do that is the latest build rootable? Normally i wouldnt ask but there is just to much to sort through. Thanks for any help anyone can give.

unfortunately you need to root lb3 through odin or heimdall. you can use heimdall with the samsung drivers if i remember right, wouldn't know for sure since i use linux but have used my fathers pc before and think the heimdall drivers are not 100% needed but may help if you have problems with the pc seeing the device in download mode. the heimdall website may have a different opinion on what drivers you should use but i believe it still works with the samsung drivers. don't forget the bootloaders. make sure the package includes them. i always used the orriginal odin package from prezkret that he leaked before it was official and flashed them through heimdal. it is the same lb3, same build dates, same file sizes. just substitute the kernel with a cwm kernel to make it rootable through recovery. but don't use a kernel with root, the voodoo superuser install scripts overwrite the su binary if you update it in effect downgrading su on you that is why it was removed from later kernels.
after you get root you can return to the stock kernel.
i'd like to be able to recommend a one-click package but i haven't run gb in so long i can't remember much about them.
I would recommend visiting sammobile to check for the stock roms, they usually have a well stocked collection

If I helped you, please hit the thanks button!
If heimdall doesn't work for you, you can always try Odin.
Jscott has a few packages, and some already include cwm.
All members above are far more knowledgeable than me when it comes to flashing.
For Heimdall (I assume qkster's uclb3), it can be tricky, but persistence usually pays off. Read the thread carefully... follow all steps. Try different USB ports, different cables, different computer. Try uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. Tell us what you're seeing.
I am inclined to think the methods that require hooking to the computer (Heimdall and Odin) are more finicky due to variations of the computer operating system, hardware, drivers, usb configuration.
Here's an alternative coming from rooted Froyo that doesn't require a computer:
Step 1 - if you don't already have CWM then you can use SGS Kernel Flasher to flash a custom Froyo Kernel with CWM (Defuse, Infusion 1.8, Infusion 2.0).
Step 2 - With custom kernel you can flash one of the CWM flashable packages as mentioned by Andros, Here's one by dman:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22775901
read the instructions in the thread... the video part is fixed.
I would not do the OTA update. I've heard 2nd hand some problems. Also as mentioned, tougher to root once you're in GB.
thanks everyone for the tips, but here is what i did
i tried a new cable and it worked funny how finniky cables are, the cable that was working for my nexus and Note 2 just wouldnt work for the infuse.
so once i got the cable to work i used heimdall but this soft bricked my phone and kept failing.
to recovery from this i used odin. which booted up the phone but with messed up screen at boot and endless boot looping so i wiped and it was fine but i imagined the messed up boot screen was from the old boot loaders so i then flashed heimdall for the bootloaders. this fixed that problem.. then finally i used odin again to flash the rooted stock image from jscott and now im all done.
thanks everyone.
