Hi guys, I was looking for a bit of help.
I've had this phone for 1 year and 2 months now and I'm sick of the slow and laggy experience.
I've heard about lag fixes, kernels, roms etc. but didn't see the value in risking bricking my phone, there are so many little things people say such as make sure you have this or that kernel before flashing etc.
Now I'm annoyed enough to change, I just updated to Gingerbread since I heard the GB bootloaders were better to flash roms with and I'm wondeirng what kernel/ROM combo would satisfy my need for better battery life and speed.
I'm looking for a ROM that is fast and has good battery life. I don't wat to use ICS because I like having plenty of free RAM since I often browse with 1-8 tabs open.
I don't really care a ton about custom UI enhancements, I use launcher pro for speed and I don't see myself ditching it.
For me, the best pickup in speed/stability has been from simply replacing the kernel for KK4-based ROMs with the Corn kernel. You can do this with the "stock" Gingerbread release (build I897UCKK4) from AT&T.
If flash this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294477
via Odin, you can then root your stock ROM easily, install something like Titanium Backup from the market, and then "freeze" the junk apps/services that contribute to slowing down your ROM.
to add to ^^...after flashing corn kernel...you can flash any custom GB rom...as Corn kernel has custom Recovery....
All custom roms are faster and have more feature then stock rom...
Also its very easy to flash ICS roms once you are on GB bootloader with custom kernel...
Thanks for the input guys.
So I can just flash this kernel with my stock ROM, and not lose anything, right?
I also know that the early lagfixes used to create new partitions and use a different filesystem to speed up the phone.
Do the kernels include a lagfix? Or is that only included in the ROM? And does the kernel do anything like messing with partitions or filesystems? That was one of the reasons I didn't bother lagfixing my phone.
The details on the kernel pages are non-existant so I'm hoping you guys can fill me in.
I would appreciate a lagfix so it doesn't take 10-15 seconds to create a bookmark.
Try ICS! You won't be dissapointed.
Flash any desired rom for YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE
i flash at least 3 roms weekly
switching between diffent ones...
YOU have to try them out everyone has different likes and dislikes
there is no ONE rom thats the best
just become a flashaholic and live the life man!!!
Try simplystock kk4 v1.0
It is stable and fast and easy to flash. That was first ever custom rom i used and pure pleasure it was

You could try Nostalgia 2.1 It's the kernel it comes with already has all the lagfix tweaks done. It might be a good place for you to start.
ICS
Definitely at this point you should be flashing ICS Roms. They are much snappier than GB roms and at this point they are very stable.
My current ROM and recommendation is V3.1 of Doc Master's ICS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462035
When I look for a ROM I usually look for stability and good battery life and customizations. I don't overclock or anything. I mainly want a cool, sleek, functional ROM. Just my preference.
2 Cappy's in family. Son's running Serendipity VII right as flashed. He does Facebook and all the other teenager stuff with it. Super stable and proven.
http://serendipity7.weebly.com/
My cappy is running Apex 12.4 with the Semaphore kernel. GB 2.3.6. packaged support for several kernels including corn 1.05 which supports the Audience chip in the Cappy. Actively developed and evolving.

I agree here! once you try ICS you will never go back to GB, its so much better, and as mentioned, Doc's V3.1 is one of the best so far indeed

Best ROMs are subjective, best to test and see what works well for you.

I rooted my device with a kernel and I have EE4. What rom will be good? I had the thunderbolt and used CM7. I know the droid charge dont have that yet. Im a bit confused about all the different numbers that i see around the forums. With the thunderbolt all you needed to know is which radio to have installed with the rom. Some please point me to the good roms that will work.
Im stock right now with root. EE4
I'd recommend Eclipse 1.3.1 for SURE. Having tried both GC and Humble beforehand I can seriously say Eclipse is great. I just like how much better Eclipse looks over the other ones. Sure themes can change that but just try Eclipse out and see how it goes. If you don't like Eclipse then Humble is certainly the one you will like.
If you're worried about losing apps or other such things just download Titanium Backup(just pay for the full version, it's much better if you are going to backup/restore alot).
also, this should be in the general section

can you shoot me a link? Also same way to install like on my thunderbolt right? Either use rom manager and select the rom on my sd card or boot into recovery?
gummy, eclipse, and humble are all great. I have found trade offs with each but the developers are actively involved in the forum and are constantly working on their roms to you just have to find which one you like best...but you will switch from time to time anyway if you are like the rest of us
I have stayed away from the GB roms since there seem to be a few bugs and I was never really impressed with GB on my DX. I still run froyo on that phone.
Ya, stick with Froyo for now.
I've used both Eclipse & Humble and both have benefits. I prefer Eclipse 1.3.1 for now...very fast, decent battery & good looking GUI.
if i install eclipse 1.3.1 will i lose root since i used a kernel to get root?

Nope.
Purchase Titanium Backup if you have not. Back up all your apps/system aps. Download an app to back up your SMS if you want and boot into recovery.
Wipe data, cache, go to advanced and wipe delvik. Back to main screen and install rom from sd card and reinstall your info and data.

No you won't lose root. You need to read the faq in the general section. Charge is very different than TB. Don't use rom manager for any thing. It doesn't work w/ the charge.

I tend to disagree with the froyo. IMO from a rom developer standpoint, even a buggy GB rom is better than froyo, it lacks many things. Im using the Eclipse GB rom now, and really very little in buggy. Now GB roms are lacking a solid kernel that you can undervolt and overlock, the Eclipse GB does lag at times (no i have not yet tried to do the EXT4 hack then used a GB rom.
One thing im not fond of with this phone coming from a EVO 4G and MT4G is that its super laggy, i know it works better with ext4... also the recovery way... when i reboot into recovery... i have to reboot to it.. then pull the battery then it will boot into recovery.
Idk, but I can't get away from Eclipse 1.2. It runs the fastest out of any rom.

Unless I am missing something somewhere I don't believe there is lagfix for GB? If so it would tend to be more "laggy". I notice no lag using froyo and lagfix enabled. I do not overclock.

wait till imnutz finishes the aosp vendor repo for the charge... when AOSP 2.3.4 roms start coming out... it will change the whole face of the ROM world for the charge.
only need to odin for radios... recovery included in rom.... boots into recovery right... all crap removed(OS level crap not just bloatware)... i check his github everyday.

so everyone said to use eclipse 1.3.1. i noticed here

that it says no kernel is included with rom. So do I just keep the kernel I have that gave me root or do I flash the rom then the new kernel the dev recommends?

so flash the rom then flash the kernel?
Just flash the rom. You only need to flash a kernel if you are planning on changing it. If you already have the kernel you are planning on running with the rom just wipe data and install the rom.
I am running the froyo eclipse with the honeycomb theme and it is awesome. Battery life is great and I would highly recommend it. I am running it with imnuts non overclocked voodoo kernel.
I am just posting this because i recently came from a Mytouch 4g. I got sick of HTC sense so now im going pure stock android. Just posting this because i know nothing about roms and such for this phone. Just wondering if someone could help me out which rom i should use, kernels, tricks, etc.... any help is appreciated and thanks in advance!
Hello and welcome. Like I tell all newcomers to the G2x, this phone has its bugs, but with the right combination of rom and kernel, this thing can be a beauty. I personally am using a pre-rooted stock OTA GB along with faux123 0.1.3 kernel. However, all phones are different and so are users, so you will have to experiment to find out what works best for you and your phone. Have fun.

Also how do you get that google banner under your name?
Well CM7 is always a good bet. Ive had great experiences with Weapon rom which is a more stock LG rom with tweaks.
MIUI is also working awesome. Im using 0.8.19 MIUI from the rom forum.
You'll need to NVFlash first which only takes a second. This installs a good clockworkmod recovery.
Then just download roms to SD and flash away.
No root required to start flashing. All custom roms have root access.

Asus TF - Custom 3.2

I had a friend make the banner for me, and he doesn't like other people using his work without his permission. But if you're trying to get your own banner, you just need to edit your signature, and insert the image.
My personal reviews:
CM Nexus 2.3.5: great rom, close to stock
Eaglesblood: lots of features
CM7: not for me, felt laggy
OMGB: fast and speedy, really close to stock with some nice features, but couldn't get data to work
Weapon: couldn't get data to work on my phone, I view it as Eaglesblood
MIUI: great, fast. ran into problems with battery life. Must of been the kernel.
Xboarder's Stock 2.3.3 rom: The current rom i'm using, quick, fast, and the closest to stock you're gonna get.
Hope this helps
Weapon G2X with faux's kernel is the best in my opinion. I'm getting 10+ hrs of battery even at 1.4 GHZ

New like you
I got my G2x in November and like you never messed with any ROM's or Kernels, basically never had a phone worth rooting so I never bothered to learn anything about it. Once I read the beginners guide on installing NVflash and CWM, I began flashing like crazy. I really liked CM7 and I am anxiously awaiting CM9. I got the fastest benchmark test with Eaglesblood and an OC kernal, but I just flashed this-
RG2x-MIUI v1.12.23 and so far I love it. I've never used MIUI before and so far it has been extremely smooth and looks awesome. This has the faux kernel built in and the benchmark test was almost as good as Eaglesblood. I did flash the CM7 camera and the Bravia hack and now the camera works as good as the stock GB one. However I don't think Wifi calling works. Hope that helps, I know you'll have fun like I did flashing all the different flavors out there!
Im using Eaglesblood with Faux123 0.4.7. Its really smooth no lag. Ive tried others but i always seem to come back to this one
I'm running weapon 3 with faux123 0.1.3 kernel at 1.4ghz and it runs great its fast and smooth and I get great battery life. I have also used miui and its a great rom as well.

Hey Guys...
I Bought this Phone before 2 months..I want to know which is better...Stock OR Custom Roms....???
As I'm from India, so i'm currently on Gingerbread 2.3.4 & Sense 3.0 ...I don't know what to do...Waiting for ICS Upgrade OR Flash the Custom one... I'm Seriously hating Sense 3.0(bcs Sense 3.6 & 4.0 are way Better than 3.0) AND Yea.. I'M LOVING SENSE 4.0 :good:
And Custom Roms will void my WARRANTY... :crying:
Is Custom Roms are better than the Stock one...if yes then How???
I don't know whether the custom Rom will give me such a performance which I'm getting from the STOCK one....Speed...Stability....Camera...BugFree...Supports...
If Custom ROM will give me TOTAL features then I'm Ready to void WARRANTY...
Totally Confused....
Hope You all Guys Suggests me the Right Way...
Custom ROM= Both Sense and AOSP versions
Custom= Kernels, with cpu overclock
Custom=Faster with ramtweaks
Custom=Less bloated
Custom= Some roms have tweaks, where you can change very much.
Custom= You will have 4.1 (JellyBean) Before the end of 2067
Go for it, it's really worth it!

Custom ROMs are better IMHO because we remove htc spyware and data logging crap, they can be themed, devs add speed, stability and smoothness tweaks, different boot animations, different everything really
And another thing you should be aware of, htc's ICS sense 3.6 updates are filled with bugs (exchange email not working properly, car mode not working as it should etc) and most custom ROMs fix these issues (curtosy of the Tmous build which is by far the most stable stock update because t-mobile actually seems to care enough to fix htc's code )
Custom roms are waaaaay better! They are more stable, in my opnion.example on stock ROM id get restarts and reboots that has never happened using custom rom! All the roms are great! Thanks to the developers we have many great choices! The bloat is removed and they look, better. So many reasons! I love my custom rom! I dont regret rooting for a second!

I forgot to add that since custom roms are rooted, you can run a greater variety of apps - some of which like system tuner, terminal emulator etc require root

But What About Battery Life ???
I read lots of Posts having "Drain the Battery Quicker" issue....
And lots of People are blaming that custom roms are gaining a more battey....!!!!
Some People are blaming Battery only stands for 2-4 hours......!!!!!
Some roms have better battery life than others but it really depends on your kernel and cpu speed. You can under clock without losing performance and save on battery life. So its really up to your settings.

Thanks for the quick replies.
I will give both of those a try over the next few weeks.
I have tried a variety of ROMS, most of which were great. I kept coming back to Clean ROM 5.6. It's TW and had no issues at all. Then I installed Lean Kernel for a little overclocking and voltage variety. The other ROM's I tried had a small white line at the top of the screen which I didn't like or take time to figure out. The Clean ROM didn't have that problem.
Good Luck.
I haven't ran his roms in awhile but some of h3llsrom rom's were wipe versions, they wipe everything. They are good roms, just read and know what you are flashing.
I say cleanrom, it's my go to and meets all my needs.
I say try out Hyperdrive rom Blazing Fast
Cleanrom like everyone else said will probably fit the bill for you.
Don't worry about the bloat. I say go for Beans' ROM if your sticking with 4.1.1. It has all the customization you would need and as stable as it gets.

Hello,
Please read the stickies before creating a new topic. ROM Comparison threads are not allowed here. You can head over to the development section and try the various AWESOME roms which have been developed and settle on the one which suits you the best!
I would reccomend you to stay stock for at least a few weeks so that you feel the stock experience for a while and then jump on to a custom rom as you will now have something to compare the custom rom with and the awesome feeling when you jump from stock to custom!
Almost all the custom roms which are there in the development section are stable enough to be used as a daily driver...
Just a friendly reminder that this thread is about the stability about custom ROMs, not which ROM's the best/better than...
Discussions about stability are ok, but please don't slide into "best ROM" discussions, or else I have to close this thread
Stock works very well. I would recommend you unlock the bootloader right away, then run stock for awhile. Rooted stock with xposed+ gravity box will get you just about anything a custom Rom will have.

Yes there are... I'm on AICP and I get SODs once every 2-3 days... Because of the various CM patches and other stuffs, it sometimes breaks Tethering (although it is fixed by the dev the very next day)... Some other patch broke the lockscreen wallpaper on other rom...
I hope you know what I'm trying to say... These are just minor issues which occur when you flash custom roms and are ironed out by the dev within days... but they seem negligible when you get the awesome experience in using a custom rom...
What seems stable to one person may not to the next. And vice versa. We all use our phones different ways for different things. The only real way to know is read through the rom threads, starting from the last page and going backwards for latest comments and/or flash them and find out for yourself.
Thanks to nandroid backups and restores....going back to our good setup is easy if you don't like something.

I would stay stock for now and test out all of the custom kernels and see which has the greatest impact on impoving your current battery life. As said before in other threads what works for one Nexus 5 may not be the same on another one. As for the rom I prefer using stock+xposed. The modules I use are: gravitybox, xHaloFloatingWindow (with Floatifications from the play store) and greenify.
The custom dishes by our chefs are all great! Those who have to ask should stay stock for a while!
Stay stock . There has been no need for custom roms for a while. Kk is great. Kernels are another matter. I'd concentrate on finding a good kernel. All the features you want on a rom can be got with Xposed framework and modules, ie gravity box

The N5 has been out for a while, alot of awesome dev's has made roms. At this point, a custom rom is a must for the N5!
I would recommend PA for a stock experience or PAC for a all in one rom.
Thank you for the suggestions everyone.
I've had this phone for just a couple of days, so I won't rush into a custom ROM. Gravitybox and other xposed modules have most of the features and customisations I wanted, so I'll stick to stock for a while, and explore stock KK thoroughly. I might try out a few custom kernels though.
