Edit: Might be stupid question, but does the Infuse have to be carrier activated for GPS to work? That is what Samsung Mobile Live chat is telling me, supposedly. If that is true, that is ridiculous that the GPS can't use satellites alone, or satellites+Wifi, and relies on the mobile network...
Background info: I am rooted, using stock ROM 2.2.1 froyo. Don't have my Infuse activated yet over AT&T, don't even have a SIM card in it, have Wifi connected to try to help GPS data, but no Mobile network.. Location and security: Use wireless networks and Use GPS satellites are both checked
Hi guys. I've seen many threads on here, threads on other forums online, and other misc tutorials googling GPS fixes for the Infuse. I cannot for the life of me get the GPS for the Samsung Infuse 4G to lock on to any satellites! It it crazy that so many people out there are having GPS issues. Everything I have tried does not work for me. I've tried replacing the gps.conf, secgps.conf, and changing the LBSTestMode settings to about everything I could find on the Internet, even trying them on the original stock settings to:
Code:
Operation Mode: Standalone
SERVER: www.spirent-lcs.com
PORT: 7275
I've tried using the supl.nokia.com and the supl.google.com and nothing seems to work! This is crazy. I am almost at the conclusion that GPS on my phone is just totally screwed up. My Sprint Samsung Epic locks onto GPS in only a few seconds, I even took the Infuse outside for about 5-10 minutes and it never locked on. It will get up to 5 satellites in view, but GPS stays yellow and doesn't lock on, and they never go over to "in use"
See attached picture of what I'm referring to: http://i.imgur.com/6Asod.jpg
If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. I don't wanna send in my phone to Samsung and wait a couple weeks to get this fixed, if they do fix it.
Thanks for any advice

Ehh I would, but it's my dads phone.. just didnt wanna put all sorts of custom stuff on it and have to update it, the only reason I rooted it was trying to use one of the GPS fixes I've seen around online. Maybe I'll try to remove root and send it to Samsung for an RMA. : ( boo

Hi,
In case you still have the Infuse 4G, I was having the exact same issue. The following fixed it:
Step 1. Follow instructions for Google Specific v3.1 build http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...s-patch-galaxy-s-ii-3-1-2-2-to-rapid-t1447599
Step 2. If you're regulating voltage to extend battery life, increase the voltage at all frequencies you're using.
Step 3. Let your GPS test app run for 10 mins. or so for the first time after reboot. Next time, you'll get faster fix.
Results:
I started out same as you: 3 or 4 sats in view, no fix, never. I was in a world of pain.
After Step 1, I was viewing 11 sats, using 4 or 5 sats, accuracy = 100 feet.
After Step 2, I was viewing 11 sats, using 6 or 7 sats, accuracy = 30 feet.

Like everyone else, stock GPS on the captivate was terrible. However on Froyo custom ROM's with fixes applied my GPS not only became usable it became pretty damn good. Continuum and Paragon were the best.
Is there something we can do on Gingerbread as it has sucked for me again like it use to. I use my phone for running and if I cant find a fix I guess I am going to have to go back to Froyo as its rediculous how inaccurate it is.
Your phone has the hardware problem. Have you ever exchanged it? The only reason it worked on custom roms was due to changes within the supl settings by the rom developers. This isnt a true fix, your gps is still "broke". I would recommend exchanging it for a refurbed unit that has a working gps. This will allow all roms and even gingerbreads gps work like it should. But if you want to keep your current phone you should ask in the development section. Im not sure if plumbobs fix works with gingerbread.
I have exchanged my phone previously and both have worked the same. I posted this here because it is not a development issue and if I posted this there I would get ripped! Just go read any posts like this in the development area. Thanks for the reply though.
There has to be a way to fix GPS on Gingerbread.

How long ago did you exchange it? Seems most refurbs after April have a functioning gps. Did you do it at a service center or over the phone?
Mine is an 1103 I think. Lost my last phone. Downloaded heanthens gingerbread gps fix. Was weird....gps was worse fir the first bit but better on my last reboot. Too early to tell and still not froyo level. Will report back as time goes on.

Try clearing GPS data..
- Dial *#*#3214789650#*#*
- Click on the "Delete GPS Data" button
- Press Back or Home key to exit
I notice this helps while switching ROMs, especially when going from Froyo to GB.
code *#3214789650# - Settings - SUPL Settings, and changed the server to supl.google.com and the server port to 7276. I got much better results from that configuration.
Anyone else getting good results using these settings?
SUPL/CP Settings/SErver FQDN Type/Custom Config
Application settings/Operation Mode/Standalone
SUPL/CP Settings/Server/www.spirent-lcs.com

GLONASS
I was just reading up on Spirent's website about GLONASS, which is a similar system to GPS. It seems it's chief benefit is to provide overlap or supplemental coverage where GPS connectivity is poor. The wikipedia article states that GLONASS will be enabled on most mobile devices in the near future and many already use it. It can function on the Captivate's ARM Cortex set. Apparently it is more accurate in the Northern Hemisphere due to the orbital positions of satellites.
Does anyone know if it is possible to enable or add this functionality to the Captivate's location capabilities?

Those are the stock settings and should give you the best results on fixed phones. Most if not all roms use supl.google.com/7276

GPS
I just loaded Mosaic V and this is the best the GPS has worked on the Captivate.
I use it for running also and it has sucked til now.
Mine is 1103 and the GPS is still garbage.. With the rogers stock 2.2 rom i have had it work well at times but also complete garbage other times..
Im running the leaked 2.3.3 Gingerbread and I havent been able to get a gps lock as of yet.. Still running stock settings atm, I sorta gave up on the idea of using GPS on my captivate to be honest.
What are the range of numbers effected by the bad GPS? I'm at 1010 and cannot keep a lock for the life of me. It'll lock on pretty quick if I'm in a standstill position, however once I start moving, forget about it.

All builds.. people are saying newer builds have a working GPS but its really random.
I think 1105 is the latest build, it might work on them.. but my GF and I both have 1103's and the GPS is garbage.

I totaly agree with you. GPS was perfect on DOC's froyo rom. Actually most of the froyo roms.
Now, with GB it's broke again. I tried Continuum GR12 and Serendipity and it still sucks.
So it's not a hardware problem.
For whatever reason im getting amazing gps now with the stock settings on 2.3.3. 10ft accuracy and tracking fairly well. i guess its touch and go with these devices.
I exchanged my 1008 at an AT&T Device Support Center last weekend and received a similar build. I could tell there was something different between the two phones because the stickers under the battery were different (I am assuming it was a refurb). The GPS in the phone they gave me is 100 times better at least. Even on stock software. I then traded in my wife's phone and she got an 1102 build which had a sticker like the original phone did. I am wondering if she got a brand new one and not refurbed? Anyways this phone for her is a lot better also. While it seemed to initially take longer than mine to get a lock it doesn't lose tracking while driving and locks on very fast after she has used it before. So I guess long story short, if your GPS is bad I would keep complaining to AT&T until they gave you a working one.
P.S. Don't let them try to convince you an upgrade to stock Froyo will fix it.

there is no gps problem. this happens after you flash the infused 1.5 rom and others because it has altered settings and there must be a conflict somewhere. you can fix it by entering lbs test mode from the dialer (sgs tools will launch it but it doesnt seem to make the settings stick, you can check if the settings stick by reading /data/gps/secgps.conf in a text editor) the dialer code is *#*#3214789650#*#* it sometimes doesnt work if gps is disabled. then toggle the agps mode to something else and exit lbs, then reboot the phone. reenter lbs from the dialer toggle the settings back to stock and clear gps data. then exit lbs(use the back button not the home button. i think it writes settings on exit), see if the settings stuck (/data/gps/secgps.conf) and reenter lbs and and get position test.
it is a pain but wont normally be a problem if the phone was never messed with. gps issues are a common complaint on any smart phone regardless of manufacturer.. my iphone 3g would not work under cover, that meant no car navigation(not that the app was available for turn by turn at that time), my friend complains about his droid incredible, my other friend complains about his lg, my other friends complain about various blackberries. it is a normal complaint.
I have to admit. I've only used gps a handful of times, but I've yet to have any issues with it. I'm running Bionix Infinity at the moment and have seen nothing but excellent gps.
Wow realy infused rom issue lol? I had this phone stock for a week and gps was horrible before anyroms period if anything is a samsung thing. I came from iphone 4 which.had an impecable gps, therefore no need to blame this on any rom ive tried them all and stock its all the same

while it is true there are bad units, this can be said about any manufacturer. what i am refering to is a specific situation that i have encountered when using roms that have the modified settings to use the nokia supl server. though this server works amazingly well for some reason when you flash a rom with the changes pre set there is sometimes a conflict that prevents a lock even though 10 or more sats are in sight with strong reception. one of the users above said they say "all gps working" i am assuming that means they can see sats but get no lock and i posted a way to resolve this if it is rom related. if you have a bad phone and are sure of it im not calling you a lier, get a new one! if you dont trust samsung well the lg thrill is coming soon.
Im not sayimg that bro.i love the infused its not the roms though.it may effect settings when u flash roms but its easy fix. I get locks all the time some fast some slow but 90% of the time it locks. In a house maybe mine does but no lock at work, so yea areas ,weather, signal, device, location, etc all play factor and for me the better battery charge I have the better the locks. Im only sticking up for devs this has nothing to do with specific roms

Did you flash the gps tweak addon when installing the Infused ROM? When i did, i noticed that the settings were still on stock settings in LbsTestMode. After changing it to jz3's required settings, the lock on gps was a lot better, but accuracy is sometimes off.
Here is his thread:

If you dont know how to get to LbsTestMode, i downloaded an app called Any Cut. Long press on an empty area on home or whatever. Then shortcut>any cut>Activity>LbsTestMode
After that, refer to the link above and start on step 2 (if you already have the gps tweak addon)

yeah i didnt mean to point the finger at the developer either. the mod works very well for many people but for me and a few others when reflashing you have to toggle things back and forth to get it to work, i also make a few other changes afterwards but experience varies so im not gonna push my successful settings on people. as for your experiences, well my phone is impecable anywhere i go in any weather so there may be an inconsistancy in the antennas or something. the gps works under cover on my infuse better than my iphone but oddly not better than my captivate. my captivate is less accurate and gets slowwer locks but can find me inside a building with a metal roof and in the basement of my house, this is from a phone that is supposed to be notorious for gps issues, but this is only after i changed a few settings and updated the glgps daemon with da_g's mod and did a lot of figuring out what doesn't work.

I'm on my 2nd stock Infuse (only rooted) and each had the same pathetic GPS/Software lack of performance issues. It is driving me insane. I assume, based on forum threads, this is a SAMSUNG specific problem.
My old iphone4 GPS was basically perfect with almost instant satellite fixes which meant I used it for running, biking and motorcycling (in addition to car use on trips), photos, etc. Can't do this with my Samsung Infuse.

it's all subjective. it's kinda a ymmv situation but the extent of what i do is start with the mod from jz3 and delete one line in his gps.conf file that says "DEFAULT_USER_PLANE=TRUE" there is no need for this (and other additions in his file) because it will be set in secgps.conf by way of lbs test mode anyway and i dont use userplane so it might cause a conflict.
the operation mode is set to msbased and dynamic accuracy is turned off ( i just do this out of habit, it "seemed" to work on the captivate)
supl server is set to supl.nokia.com and the port set to 7275 with secure socket off and agps mode set to controlplane
i have no way to know why this works any better but it "seems" to work for me. also after some googling i found that control plane can be used for emergency location for 911 calls which is a good idea if you like hiking or 4-wheeling which i do.
i offer no guarantees that this will work better for anyone but it seems to work on my captivate and my infuse, the captivate has other mods to the jupiter.xml and an updated glgps deamon thanks to da_g's mod. the infuse should be up to date on the glgps daemon from the factory and the jupiter.xml is stock.
i can get as low as 4m locks and get locks in as few as 4 seconds to about 20-50 meters initially quickly coming down to 6-8m. most locks take under 10 seconds.

Hrmmmm....no noticeable issues here. We used the apps gps status and faster fix on some evo roms to quickly connect and it seems to work on the infuse.
I will check out the link above when i have some spare time
I know many people have complained about the Infuse's GPS performance. I have read and tried about 10 different "fixes". It does not matter what I do, it is just horrible.
I am coming from an HTC Inspire, which could sit on my lap in the car, lock within 10-15 seconds, and not show me driving in the trees.
With my Infuse, I have to hold the phone up to the windshield, with the back facing out (cannot lay it on the dashboard), to acquire a lock in 2-10 minutes. After I get a lock, if I do not keep the back of the phone at the windshield, I loose lock.
I have worked with Angry GPS & GPStest. I have tried ATT Stock UCKD5 & UCKE3, S7 (awesome ROM), Infused and Stock with Community Kernal.
Is this just how bad the Infuse performs or should I call Amazon and send it back?

Your fix was one of the fixes I have already tried. I tried it under Stock and S7 and tried it again today with S7. Still no improvement.
Question for you Tyshemi which might help clarify this problem. When you have your Infuse indoors and outdoors what are the typical DBHZ (AngryGPS) or SNR (GPSTEST) #'s that you get for satellites?
Here are my typical numbers
[1]Laying on desk 2 foot from window (one floor house), 28-35
[2]in hand 2 foot from window, 17-25
[3]outside laying on leg, 22-28
[4]outside fingers only holding phone by the sides with back of phone to the sky, 25-32
[5]laying on the hood of my wifes Toyota RAV4, 35-45
[6]in the RAV4 on my lap, 20-27
When the phone is on the hood of the RAF 4 it will lock very quick, even after clearing data. But, after locking, not clearing data, I can go to any of the other positions, except #4, and it will not lock.
I am very interested in hearing what you numbers are.
Thanks for the quick response!
Also, it would be interesting to hear from other people what numbers they get and if they have issues or a working GPS.

I really appreaciate the offer but I feel at this point I have followed the directions as well as trying other fixes.
Please correct me if I am wrong but your fix as well as other fixes do not actually change or affect how the OS uses the hardware or how the hardware processes the incomming signals. I believe most fixes just affect how the phone processes available location services. The fixes may help but I doubt the fixes can help failing/deficient hardware.
I think a very clear example of a hardware issue is the fact when my phone is laying in my hand, outdoors, it may or may not reacquire a lock and if it does lock my accuracy will never go less then 100ft. When I place the phone in a metal cake pan (indoors) or on the hood of the RAV4,, my TTFF is about 60sec and accuracy holds 13 to 25ft.
I really wish you could help me but I am convinced this is hardware and I am going to try and return it and get another one.
I will follow up to let you know what happens.
Thanks again for your help.
Hmm thats weird man... i used thie fix proposed by tyshemi thread:
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/guide-gps-quickest-fix-solution.2022/
Now i get locked under 30 secs In and out doors no matter the situation....
Maybe you do indeed have a bad gps on that phone.... Probably change it as gps not working, just remember to flash back to stock xD and risk it with another Infuse or change.... but those radically unfuctional gps are not common... i seriously havent had ONE single trouble locking my position on different countries, including north and south america...

Yes, but thanks for checking. I have tried multiple scenarios over the last week and have spent a lot of hours trying to figure this out. I think I finally have the answer. Check out this thread I just created, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1260944
SOLVED
I contacted Samsung and discussed my GPS issues. I was issued an RMA on 15 Sep. I just received the phone back today and there is a huge improvment. Right out of the box (I flashed back to stock before sending of course) locked in less then 30 seconds. Much more accurate then prevously. Repair ticket indicates they "replaced component".
At least it is working better
I have tried running a few different ICS roms and had very bad luck with the GPS working. Is there something I should be doing prior to flashing a a new rom or after flashing that would help get the gps to work?
I have tried GPS Status, GPS Test and GPS Fix but nothing seems to work.
I have read tons of posts and nothing seems consistent in gettting the gps to work.
I have used AOSP 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 and vhgomez roms.

this will be moved into a different forum. dont post questions in development...but to answer your question, if you use those gps apps you sometimes gotta wait a while for it to pick up gps, u cant just hit clear agps data, redownload agps data and boom gps works. sometimes u gotta wait a little for it to find a signal. I've never in my whole history of owning an android phone have had gps issues that i couldnt fix by using those programs. and i've run the aosp oICS rom and had perfect gps.
If your GPS is not working at all, and you've tried everything. Try un-rooting your phone, go back to stock rom, see if that gets GPS to work. Then try to root again. I read on a Google forum that this guy did not have GPS working at all. He though he had a bad GPS chip or something. He un-rooted to return phone to Sprint and for some odd reason the GPS started working again. My GPS does not work also. It did prior to rooting. Im wating for the official OTA to un-root then root in hopes of getting it to work. I dont use GPS much so its not a issue for me at the moment. Good luck.
GPS seemed to be off for all the ROMs I was using, mostly in apps outside of the Maps app. I went back to 2.3.7 stock since I figure ICS OTA should be arriving soon.
Good to know I'm not the only one. I love ics too much to go back. But at least its a known issue. Anyone have any idea why?
How bad of GPS are we talking about here? This was done indoors just now...

Try the QBANIN GPSFix app if you haven't already, otherwise try using your GPS in different areas.
For the longest time I would rage because I had no GPS (or so I thought) when I attempted to use google maps or anything. Tried all the GPS fixes with zips and various apps, unrooted, same thing.
A month later I was on a trip out of state, opened up google maps and got a lock instantly! When I got back home checked gps again, still wouldn't lock.
Turns out for whatever stupid a** reason... about a 1/2 mile radius around my house GPS will not work but as soon as I get out of that area, its almost instant haha. Hopefully you have the same issue as I did

Thanks I will try that next time.
At the moment I have a working GPS all the time again.
On another thread a user indicated he shut all the location services off, then used GPStest or Status to clear the GPSA and then request a GPSA download. They he went back and turned all the location services back on. Sounds strange but it got my GPS working.

This will be awesome, I got a Note 2, so I gave my SGS4G to my son to play games on, no data needed. How's the wifi and battery performance? Any theming options yet? Are these addons compatible?

No problem, I copied titanium from my other phone and restored all his games. Had no idea it had theme choser, gonna go play with some of my themes now
How do I get TWRP on this? I tried the ICS one from the TWRP Installer thread but that didn't work. Installing via Goo Manager is not an option without a network (No compatible Sim).
Just fyi the data even using 2g is giving me random reboots. Otherwise this Rom is freaking fast and smooth. I can't wait till it gains enough stability to run as a daily driver.

I had some reboots without ever inserting a SIM, mostly while restoring apps from SD via titanium pro, so it might not be just data related.
Thanks Erik!
Can't wait until the bugs are worked out to use it as a daily.
Open as per OP request, Thank You.
Awesome update on 4g data, Erikmm! I get to experience JB now. I can hold on to the S3 upgrade for another year. Slim JB on our phone is almost as snappy as JB on S3. If we can fix the wifi, it would be perfecto.
P.s. The small font and icons actually made the phone's screen looked bigger. Feels like I am having an S3.

sorry for the really stupid questions, but since the 4g reboot issue has been fixed, do we need to follow the same directions about checking the airplane mode, etc? or just install and run as normal. also, im assuming this is mtd?

sweet! i will have to pick this phone back up and use it again.....
Here's something that may go for dev-bug, but...
I wiped my phone and applied the SlimBean R2 installer as well as the SlimGApps. Full factory reset, all that fun. So hopefully no remnants causing these symptoms:
Yesterday I ran Waze (driving/mapping app) on my SlimBean for ~45 minutes without ever getting a GPS lock. Rebooted, tried again for another 30 minutes. No GPS connection.
The GPS Status app says that it's not seeing any satellites at all... so apparently my GPS isn't even trying, as my phone with ICS normally sees 10-12 satellites here. After testing with GPS Status, reflashed SlimBean, reflashed SlimGApps, checked GPS Status again. Still not a single satellite seen. Recovery, flashed YAGF2.zip (Yet Another GPS Fix 2), system, GPS Status, still nothing.
I should probably note that the cell location has been working... Waze was giving guesses as to where I was currently located based on my cell towers. Obviously Wifi location isn't working without Wifi, so the question I have is... are other people using JB actually having GPS satellite locks, or is this another current JB bug? I ask because OP doesn't mention GPS issues, though people reported reboots when GPS tries to take effect. The only GPS thing I did before was making sure that Internal GPS was actually set as the GPS source in Location services, since that wasn't checked... Internal GPS was the only option, but it wasn't checked.
If you need logs or something, let me know what you'd like. Thanks.

Our phone is infamous for its horrible GPS, try this GPS patch and see what happens, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963915
Already had that downloaded. Let's give it a shot, and...
Reboot to recovery, flashing agps.patch.google.build.nossl.twrp.v3.1.zip, reboot to system, GPS Status sees...
Nothing. Still just "Looking for GPS location..." with no Compass (heading stays at 0 degrees) or satellites seen.
One more thing. I know it's been noted that the phone audio only works through the speaker, but music also only comes out through the speaker. At least, plugging into the headphone jack didn't make MortPlayer Audio Books actually come out through the car's sound system, it was still coming out of the speaker.

Read the notes if it doesn't work, let the GPS stay on. Try other methods on the notes.
Note 4:
This works with ANY ROM unless the ROM has aGPS and/or GPS disabled in the code. This happens with CMx nightlies and some betas! I cannot fix this, neither can you.

So... as I'm asking, has anyone actually confirmed that GPS (not location services, but GPS itself) is enabled and working? The build.prop tweak that it suggests (Note 13) doesn't appear to apply, since neither this nor ICS (AOKPm6r5) have the ro.ril.def.agps.mode forced.
Also, note that as I said before, I've let GPS Status or Waze run for going on an hour without it seeing a single satellite... GPS is NOT ENABLED on my JB. Just like Wifi, except it's marked as 'on'. I'm wondering if this is my phone hating life and needing to offer up some logs, or if this is a standard issue. -_-
That being said, when I turned off GPS and just used cell location, I had my first random reboot on second location services call (Yelp's location check). After it finished rebooting, told it to start trying to use GPS again and it went back to just guessing wildly as to my location based on cell towers without ever using GPS (GPS Status never showed in the notification bar, no little coda to signify GPS lock attempt), but also without the reboots, so that was nice.
