First root the device, then install cwm recovery, then download a rom you like, copy to sdcard, boot into recovery, wipe data, wipe cache and wipe Dalvik cache. Then flash your rom and reboot

Are you talkin about the unrooting section of this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088494
you need to flash a recovery via fastboot, go into recovery and wipe the phone, flash the latest cyanogenmod, and flash the latest gapps.
there are a bunch of guides in the nexus s general forums, and in the development forums.
See this is why I hate one click root methods. When something goes wrong you don't know how to fix it.
Flash a recovery using fastboot. Then wipe data factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvic cache. Mount storage and transfer the rom you want to flash. Then choose install from zip. Then reboot and you should be up a d running.

Did you wipe the dalvik cache after flashing the rom? And what do you mean by: "im not sure whether i've install a rom correctly"?
it sounds like you didn't wipe it first... Boot into recovery and then hit wipe system and cache. After that hit sellect zip from sd card and select your rom. That should give you a fresh system install

Try wiping the dalvik cache first, then rebooting before you do ^this^. If you still get stuck at the boot screen, then do a clean install.
Hi
I just bought my first android phone which is a Google Nexus S, and I guess flashing/installing (I never know which is the correct term to describe this action!) a kernel from XDA can give better performance or some extra features, e.g. BLN
However, I don't seem to be able to find a complete tutorial of how to flash/install a kernel, can anyone help me with this please?
Thanks in advance
First you need root.
Reboot into recovery and wipe Dalvik cache maybe twice.
Then find the kernal in your SD and install
Reboot
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
wipe dalvik cache once. then proceed to flash kernel

Wiping cache does not delete your data.
Unlocking the bootloader to get a custom recovery will wipe everything.

so in this case, flashing a kernel will NOT delete my data, correct? since I don need custom recovery, and I have already rooted
U dont need to wipe cache. Simply wipe delvik cash then flash your kernel on your sensation.

You don't have a custom recovery? I suppose you could use Flash Image GUI but you're really gonna wanna get a custom recovery. Especially since you want to make a backup before you flash in case something goes awry.
*if you didn't wipe /system and /boot it is NOT A FULL WIPE*
Doesnt matter just wipe dalvik cache and ur good. Through custom recovery

clockwork recovery is the base for flashing anything.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
use this guide to install CWM(See Part 3 of the Guide)
once done just wipe dalvik cache in CWM and flash any kernel .zip file
you dont need to wipe dalvik cache, cache, or anything else. as these dont have anything to do with the kernel. you can flash kernels via recovery(in .zip form), or with fastboot/terminal emulator(in boot.img form).
I'm thinking of selling my phone and want to make sure that it's been cleaned of all personal data. My phone is rooted and on CM 10.0
Do I just do the following:
>>Reflash latest clockworkmod recovery, boot into recovery and wipe data + cache + dalvik<<
Is it preferable to sell the phone with the stock ROM? If so how can I do that (assuming it's possible).
Thanks.
I would probably do a full wipe and flash the factory images thru fastboot and lock the bootloader. This will return it to brand new out of the box software.

This but format SD through the computer first. This will wipe everything and make it "Zip" again.

The best way would be to flash the factory image, which will return everything stock and new. I have a guide here for it.

I've been formatting the SD through CWM.
What is the difference between formatting in CWM or a computer? CWM sees to wipe it clean, or am I missing something?

Formating through the computer will wipe and defragment it as well. It is a 'true" format than with CWM. CWM just wipes but not like through the computer.

I would format SD card through the computer than flash factory image from Google than root again by fastboot flash CWM and flash SU. This will ensure all is wiped and it will amaze the new user how fast it is.

Can you get back to recovery to flash a new ROM?
I have flashed many ROMS recently to try them out and also had a similar issue with one or two of them.
On my Note 2 I hold power, home and volume up to cycle power and get back to recovery and simply flash a new ROM, presto...
everytime i.flash a rom. i format everything. it might be you flashed a corupt file. redownload reflash

Not sure what is going on but here is how I flash a ROM from recovery and so far so good.
Copy rom file to external sd card in phone.
Do a full factory wipe, cache and dalvik.
Install rom.
Install Gapps if necessary or desired.
Wipe cache and dalvik again.
Reboot
Note that some roms will give you a recommended list of what to wipe if doing a new install or upgrade of that rom, if such instructions exist its best to follow those instead but the above has worked for me for a while now.

That's what is advised to do before flashing a completely different ROM anyway by some. From recovery, flash the ROM again, and if the ROM is not corrupted (check md5 or whatever comes with it), you should be good to go.
