Anyone trying to warranty their device would love to have a sure method of unrooting, getting S-ON, basically making their phone completely out of the box status again.
Thanks

Working on it here. Adding pictures and such, for now a bare walkthrough.
S-OFF back to S-ON is impossible, no way to do it, one way trip.
Once you go from S-ON to S-OFF, you're stuck there. Period. No exceptions.
The closest you can get is to restore the stock image and be with the 1.44.0007 hboot that still says s-off.
I had an g2 and I sent in 2 phones both rooted and s-off with no problems. Has anyone ever heard of them giving flack for rooted devices?

They're instructed not to even "touch" them if they're modified in such way.
I guess it really depends on how nice the person who received it is.

There's a thread about it on this forum, and HTC asked for the link and said they'd look into it. So post your results, with as much detail as possible, here:

unfortunately you are stuck for now the HTC tool isn't working right for us, but at least some HTC people have been notified... hopefully some people that can somehow get something done about it.
the Revolutionary team has also been made aware of the new HBOOT, but they seemed to say not to hold our breath waiting for a new exploit.
hopefully something will happen soon. HTC is supposed to get back to us within a week or so, but we'll see...

I flashed the t-mobile signed stock rom PP59IMG.zip through the bootloader then proceeded to download the OTA's. After that I placed the new recovery image in the appropriate place and rebooted bootloader to prepare pushing the recovery through fastboot. What I noticed is that even after installing the OTA in a unrooted totally stock rom, S-off remains, however where "revolutionary" once was written now displays "**Locked**" , so apparently HTC has managed to relock the bootloader even though it shows S-off. It's not totally locked, as I had to reflash the PP59IMG.zip to downgrade hboot again so that I could reuse the revolutionary tool to flash the 4.0.0.8 recovery, then install CWM to update the recovery. As long as "Locked" was sitting where "revolutionary" normally is, I found it impossible to use fastboot, so my guess is security remains off but fastboot is locked. Just my guess anyway.

thats what i did. I wanted to test drive the new ota's so i flashed the tmobile signed stock rom, which removes root. Fastboot became locked after the ota's but the bootloader wasnt since i was able to just reinstall the same stock rom and used revolutionary to install the recovery. If you were s-on and took the ota before you had a chance to use revolutionary, you are stuck for now.

No, we don't.
Some people do, but anyone who has the latest OTA can't gain root (at least until HTC fixes their unlocker tool).
I remember making a gold card 2 years ago for the original Mytouch for a friend. Using a hex editor. What does that actually do though?
I dont have S-Off cuz i was dumb and did the OTA before i rooted. I was just asking to add possibilities out there. Would it really be possible though, it be pretty nice if we got at least custom recover from it.

If your S-Off there's methods to get Clockwork back on.
HTC is going to FIX (Yes Fix) the OTA Update to allow S-Off, and Root. I called T-Mo, and HTC. My Uncle wanted his Doubleshot Rooted, but couldn't because he (Stupidly) updated.

My wife has a Mytouch 4G slide that has never been rooted and has all the latest updates from T-Mobile. I keep reading conflicting information with regard to whether this is a problem (the whole s-off/s-on thing).
I was thinking of trying out one of the Ice Cream Sandwich Roms. Can I root her phone? Should I root her phone? Is there a link with good current information?
just to sum it up:
with the latest OTA you cannot achieve s-off (yet), however, you can unlock the bootloader and then root and flash recovery and roms using the official htcdev unlocking method (which apparently voids your warranty instantly)

No.
The unlocker is currently broken for (most) people.
It only voids your warranty if any damage results from anything you flash. Flash an OC kernel and burn up your phone, not their fault. Keyboard falls apart due to use, their fault.
The confusion continues - is there not a "root your mytouch 4g slide wiki" with current information?

there is, but in a sense that info is not 100% current.... those tools won't work if her phone is S-ON with HBOOT 1.45.0013(software version 1.55.531.3).
keep an eye out tho for news on another update that is supposed to make the official HTC unlocker tool work by the end of the month
I wanna get my hands on another to see if I can duplicate the 2 I unlocked

This is a great question seeing how my mt4gs will be here tomorrow lol.
I'm coming from an htc g2 and have been free from security for awhile! I really want an aosp rom (not a big fan of sense) so this should be interesting!
Been reading up for the last couple of days and the dev support seems a little lacking, but the g2 started to slow as well, though there were plenty of stable roms.

From what I've read, HTC is aware of the Unlocker not properly unlocking the MT4GS. All we can do now is wait since Revolutionary hasn't figured out a method to replace the 1.45.0013 HBOOT yet.

Doesn't matter if it's a hardware or software issue. If you mod your phone in any way, the warranty is void, unless you revert back to stock. Even if it's just a software mod, like a custom rom or kernel.

Incorrect. Read HTC's unlock disclaimer. It will only void the warranty if It's damage you caused by flashing something. Normal hardware issues are still covered as the original warranty would do.
And I got the phone... It came with the 1.55

You wouldn't think they would. But then again they might try and get it all the way up tp date before sending it back out. Good question.

They say that any devices that come to them will be shipped out again with the most recent software on them.
I recently had to send one of mine in, it came back as it was when I sent it out - but the current OTA is on pause so that may be why.
I think at this stage it would be a dice roll...

Well it's better to send it in sooner, rather than later.
Besides, my device wouldn't turn on at all anyway, so I didn't really have a choice.
Hoping they don't update it though.
Is there any way I can call them and tell to not update it, if possible?

Just think it's a noob looking for attention. If he did want S-ON, he would've replied. I think he pretty damn well knows what S-OFF is, just wanted some attention for a few days.
He did replied to the first responce to his question and then the semi flames started for him not knowing any better. Noob for sure. He will know the difference now or and hopefully search before posting next time. Hopefully by then he knows the true status of his phone that's just something we have to deal with during this stage of a new phone. Once development picks up and there are more threads and more people posting useful information for the noobs to learn from it will make things a lot better.

i have an htc evo shift 4g that originally had 2.3.4 on it. i successfully (i think) downgraded the system to 2.2. but every single time i try to flash the hboot_eng.nb0 to gain S-off the md5sum comes back different than its supposed to be. funny thing is, its perm-rooted somehow. i decided to go ahead and reboot anyway and attempt perm-root and it stuck. no brick, no errors, no nothing. its fine. but as far as i have read i need to have S-off to be able to flash custom roms.
am i correct in this assumption?
before anyone tries to point me to an hboot flashing tutorial, be aware i have looked at ABSOLUTELY EVERY SINGLE ONE AND FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS TO A T!!!!!
any help would be absolutely appreciated
EDIT: SOLVED
ok so after thinking i did everything right (which i sorta did) i glanced through all the tutorials again and found the answer.
CREDIT GOES TO gzetski and unbrkshft AT ANDROIDFORUMS.COM
All I had to do was re-install 2.2 per gzetski's instructions. Then I followed the rooting instructions at the top of this post as if I was running 2.3.4. It was flawless. I was able to downgrade the hboot and S-OFF. The phone is now running CM7 and the owner is quite pleased.

You don't have to be S-Off to flash custom ROMs... but it sure makes it easier. Go into bootloader and let us know exactly what it says at the top, there should be about 4 lines.
Re: [Q] Cannot for the life of me flash hboot on 2.2
Yup, if you're s-on you can flash roms but you have to flash the kernel seperately, which means you have to carry around a computer with you whenever you go on a flashing spree
