[Q] Location of Nexus S Boot Splash Image?

What is the location of the Nexus S Boot image? i.e. On startup the picture with all black that says "Google" on it.
Looking for the location of this image.
Also if anyone knows the method of going about changing it.
All help is appreciated thank you.

I don't believe it's on the /system partition; I looked for it extensively a couple of weeks ago. I'm pretty sure it's in the kernel boot image.
I don't have the skills yet to extract stuff from the bootloader. If you do, that's where you should be looking.

He's not talking about the startup animation that you see on a normal boot.
He's talking about the very first bootup screen you see when you turn the phone on; the one that is just the word Google on a black background. This one shows no matter what you're booting into. It's not part of the animation you're referring to. I've opened that and checked, and I posted it in the other thread where a guy was asking for the boot animation, but was actually looking for the Google word one.

Correct. I have a personal picture I made on my G1 a while back that I wanted to make for my Nexus S, but at the moment, the Team Whiskey splash screen is on it, and I don't much care for it. So I'm looking for a way to change that. The splash image came with the 1.4GHz kernal.

Had I more knowledge on the subject of building kernels, i'd be more then willing to tackle it, but alas, I have no knowledge on the subject.
Wonder how difficult it is to grasp...I'd like to try building my own kernel.

I don't know where in the boot image it is, but I'm 99% certain it's not in the regular ROM space we can get with a file explorer. I asked the famous supercurio what he thought, and he said he's never looked for it but agrees it's probably in the bootloader. He said he'll try to remember to check it out if he remembers.
@SpartusTana - if Team Whiskey's replaced it, they must know the location! Maybe ask them for the location, and/or a rip of it for the guy who's looking for it to port to another phone (in another thread here).

That's a healthy idea. I'll try hoping over to their IRC to see if anyone has the knowledge of it.
Any idea on the guy's name who is working on the port? I'd much like to get in touch with him.

Also, it looks like they're doing this on HTC devices via fastboot.
Personally, I wouldn't muck with it on my phone, but the really intrepid might be willing to read the tutorial here and try it out on our Nexus S...
edit: actually probably won't work, they're mentioning using an "engineering bootloader"...

If you mess up your bootloader, you might not be able to get into CW, right? That's my fear.

Yah it doesn't appear as though it will work but thank you for looking into it.
@distortedloop You're correct on that. There's no real seperate button combination to bypass the bootloader to get into the recovery. So if the bootloader got screwed up...you'd screw yourself right back. I am wholy against messing with the bootloader haha.

sorry for requesting in this old thread. but is there any progress on this? really want to change that splash...

It is possible I have done it with the second stage Bootloader... The first stage is still google with the unlock.

By splash screen do you mean the Nexus S animation, or the "Google" word when the phone first turns on.
The boot animation is changed the same way as the Nexus One's and many other phones are, just make a properly formatted bootanimation.zip and put it in the proper directory. There's plenty of guides on doing this across the xda forums.
The "Google" word we talked about in another thread a while back. No one reported being able to locate it. I suspect it's in the bootloader itself, but way beyond my skills to validate that.

Any way to modify the first HTC logo screen?

Hi,
I'm hoping this is the right place to post this question, but if it is not, I apologize.
First of all, I'm not talking about the bootanimation.
I'm talking about the screen that shows up "before" the boot animation.
It's a white bright screen with just HTC in the middle.
The reason I want to modify it is because it's just way too bright. It literally hurts my eyes, not to mention it's wasting battery there every time it boots. I'd appreciate any help on this.

You're talking about the splash screen and you flash it almost the same way as you would a radio.

Is that same as bootscreen? I googled for flash screen or flashscreen, but not much result for android. I also searched in some forum's theme threads, and I see a bunch of bootscreens but don't see any flash.
And, when you say almost the same way as the radio, does that mean I need to wipe data and cache? That'd suck...

there is actually a custom one a few threads down. No you don't have to data wipe but the image has to have a certain name plus .img and you just push it with adb.

I'm failing to find the thread you are talking about. Are you talking about that BIOS bootanimation thing? If not, can you please provide the link?

Yeah, the thing is I created that forgeting that I generally have the fastboot on anyway and never see it. lol. But custom splashes are nice for when you restart your phone.

[Q] Did my blunder brick my bloomin' phone?

So I rooted my Samsung Infuse and installed Clockwork recovery using the appropriate method for flashing the - v3 or ve or what it might be called - recovery. So then using Clockwork I backed up my current ROM (Stock). It acted funny later after so I decided to just go back and restore from a previous ROM. It said there were problems mounting a few things. Don't remember what those were. However, here is the real kicker; I may have used update.zip from the previous phone (Which seemed to be a T-Mobile My touch 3G with a 32A something and a 32B something else, similar to the Fender) I had since all I did was switch out the external SD cards since they were both the same size and I had all of my music on the My Touch.
So, if it did flash the Update.zip, is my phone, for the most part, completely bricked? It's symptoms include:
- Static pictures
- Will not boot into recovery
- Will display 'Samsung' but then cuts to static afterwards.
- Shows Battery meter when plugged in and my computer still recognizes and installs the device drivers.
- It will boot into Download mode. Dunno if that actually will help at this point.

If it still turns on you're golden. Just look for the ultimate unbrick thread in the development section and follow the op instructions to go back to stock. The unbrick also is pre rooted and had the right recovery installed, so you're good to flash stuff after

Trashing your partitions and bootloaders. Tho I'm not an expert on Samsung devices those seem to be the main causes of true bricks.

So if I change the partitions to like an ext3 filesystem is that considered trashing it? Yes, I'm fairly new to this entire in depth Android experience. I only took the Android over the iPhone because I am experienced with Linux and only touched a MAC (Referring to the Apple Operating System and not MAC cosmetics) three times.

Well, now I can't download anything in the market due to an 'Unknown error'. I mean, I can receive emails, I think I can call and text. I just can't use my smart phone to do dumb things now. This is a very disturbing complication and I will set off to find the cure for this ailment by posting here again.

Mainly bootloaders, and ours have enough protection that it's difficult to trash them.
It's next to impossible to hardbrick our phone. Worst case you put it in a state where you need to Odin/Heimdall something to fix it.

Wife's Desire S won't boot, please help!

My wife installed some updates in the market and her phone froze on the Sense home screen. Removed the battery, and it now won't boot past the HTC logo.
It is on the factory/default Sense ROM, never rooted or anything, my wife has like 5 apps on it and still the stock Sense wallpaper
It can boot into HBOOT, we tried the recovery option which showed the black screen with phone+green arrow animation for a few seconds. Then very shortly an image with a red arrow, then a reboot and still stuck on the HTC boot screen.
It does not show up in ADB, USB debugging is not on either.
My next thing to try would be a factory reset, is that likely to work?
Is there any way to get SMS'es and some game save games off the phone before resetting it?

Well if your PC is not recognizing the phone, then there's not much you can try I guess (other then factory reset.) Maybe someone is gonna come up with something.
Aren't the gamesaves on your sd card?
There have been hardware issues associated with multiple downloads from the market and pulling the battery. This might or might not be the case. However you are covered with warranty in case it is.

If she created a HTC Sense account and had set it up to sync then her texts would have been saved online.

If no other options download the corresponding to your region RUU (ROM Update Utility) from here. Then reboot to Bootloader (VOL DOWN + POWER Button). Make sure that you have HTC Sync installed. Go to fastboot screen (you should see FASTBOOT USB line). Start RUU.exe. It will handle everything automatically and hopefully you will have a brand new Stock system again.

If hard resetting dies not work, I'm afraid you may have a fries eMMC chip! It's very common when the phone freezes in maker updates and you pull the battery!

Sorry to be offensive but stop with this crap it only scares people. I have rescued my phone twice already from the bootloop. The fried eMMC is the last consideration to be made after trying some reasonable solutions.

An boot loop isn't
an real indicator for fried emmc, most of the times you just somehow messed up part of the software or the partitions, this:

I'm not starting with 'crap' I'm simply saying what might be true.
It is well known that after hitting update all in the market, it leads to a fried emmc chip.
I have also been stuck on a bootloop many times (after flashing wrong kernels etc) and had to pull the battery. I also risked a fried emmc chip. I was just lucky I didn't get it fried, and I hope it doesn't happen again! *touch wood*

so, have you tried hard reset/factory reset. let us know what happen than. next time never pull out battery when your phone freeze. just press vol up + vol down + power button (all three hardware button) and the phone will restart. I personally had this problem few times and able to recover my device. start with hard reset your phone.
look at ben_pyett signature. you need the adb+fastboot and htc drivers for your windows pc to detect your device. I'm using linux and I don't need those drivers.

Ok to be more specific: I have already rescued my phone from a bootloop with all the indications for a "fried eMMC" described in some threads in this forum. Also me and Tectas assisted several people accross the forum these days to revive their phones from the "fried eMMC" (some successful, some not). Anyway all of these users had the info that they eMMC is fried and were terrified. But a Bricked and Fried phone are totally different stuff. So if you post to help is OK, but when you post to scare this isn't.

Update: thanks for all the suggestions. I couldn't get any of it to work, including factory reset.
We are going to send the phone in for a warranty repair, most of her personal stuff is on her Google account or the SD card, so no major problems.
The HTC Sense website with SMS backup never worked for her, there is no option to log in from the phone.
As much as i love Android I am shocked that hitting "update all" in the market and/or pulling the battery can brick a 400 $ phone. Even buggy old Windows ME was fine if you pulled the pover cord.
My iPhone friends will laugh at me well into 2012 if I tell them this.
Do HTC have more faults than other brands? Both our Desires have had trouble. I am about to upgrade mine, maybe should look at another brand?

I'm afraid that I must agree.
In the early days of this problem, I too was probably guilty of announcing too early to users "that's you've fried your eMMC chip - that's a warranty return" where as over time we've now come to believe that this still a chance of hope, albeit not great or guaranteed, but none the less, fortunately several people have managed to recover from this situation, by a variety of means.
So even though the possible outcome might not be likely, I think that we should attempt to always suggest that there might be hope at least until we've tried all the possible solutions and now luckily the various users have compiled guides of the suggested options so this isn't that difficult.
The only time when I'd suggest that a user should probably instantly return a device, is if they are completely non technical or have a brand new device which is still S-ON. In which case they may as well return the device under warranty and get a replacement device or motherboard which will at least contain the non dubious/faulty chip, and will remove the possibility of future occurrence completely - so they'll actually be better off for the future!

Sorry to hear this. You were just unfortunate and what happened to you is rare, also it's not a fault of Android but, a HTC eMMC chip hardware issue caused by a particular dodgy version of the eMMC chip that comes on some of these phones.
I believe that HTC realised the fault and replaced the chip with another make after a fashion. So hopefully you'll get the different chip on your replacement device/motherboard.
I also think that they've changed the market application so that it downloads one application after rather than all the applications together, which was known to cause a device freeze, which often was followed by a battery user battery pull - which then led to this problem.
Next time... Never pull the battery! there are always other options.
