[Q] How to flash old radio? - HTC Desire S

Hi everyone, I wanna ask something.
Few weeks ago, I just flashed a new radio 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M on my device, but after a few weeks later I think my old radio is still better than this one.
the question is, can I just flash my old radio in the same way just like when I flashed the new Radio?
Is it possible to perform a "downgrade" in Radio?
many thanks guys

The radio images are not version dependent. You can change them freely. I recommend you to use Android Flasher for this purpose - just a couple of mouse clicks and you are done

Cache wipe. Actually is good to do this before flashing anything on your device, because the cache partition is used as a temporary storage sometimes

Your device must be S-OFF to flash images directly. Otherwise you can flash your old radio the same way you flashed the new one.

And what is this method??? I do not know other ways to flash radio images but directly via fastboot (which is the Android Flasher dressed in GUI)

[Q] ROOT Beginners questions

Hey guys,
I saw alot of guides out there to Root your SNS, all different, and none explain some basics stuff. I want to understand what I'm doing and not doing it like a robot. So I'll ask some newbie questions I got into:
1) What's the difference between ROOT / unlocking bootloader / oem unlock ?
2) Is it possible to save all your apps and data before Rooting your SNS by some way ? I know there's these apps Nandroid and Titanium backup, but both can used only after rooting no ?
3) I saw there's guide to Root i9020T only, and i9023 & i9020A separately, what is it ? how do I know what I have ?
4) What's the best recovery out there ? Clockwork mod ? If I use it and I want to update it, do I need to download the new version and transfer it again, or does it have auto update ?
5) What is Fastloader / Fastboot ? what does it do ?
6) What is Superuser ? what does it do ?
7) What is Flash rom, or Flash recovery ?
8) What is the best and most updated guide for Rooting SNS out there ? there just so many, I need something that most reliable
9) I wanted to make sure the all these processes are reversible, that if I'll find out the original stock rom was better for me, if I could undone all the rooting and recovery changing and go back to the stock rom with original updates from google (like new) ?
10) For people that have done it, does it worth rooting the SNS at all ? does the Roms out there for SNS are good enough to replace the stock one ? I've heard that most good roms are for Galaxys, and SNS has the basics, is it true ?
Thanks for your patience, sorry for being pain in the ass

Yea I figured people won't have the strength to answer all that, I understand them
Ok thanks, take your time !
1. Root gives you ability to run applications that require root access.
Unlocking bootloader is the same thing as OEM unlock. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to flash custom recoveries which leads you to flashing custom ROMs & kernels. With the Nexus series, it is a legitimate device that permits you to unlock the bootloader without using a exploit.
2) No. This is not possible, upon unlocking the bootloader. It will wipe all of your data due to a security measure. And yes, nandroid can only be usable when you flash Clockwork Recovery. Titanium Backup requires root. And to obtain root, you need to flash su.zip (or whatever method you desire to). The best thing you could do when you first get the NS is to oem unlock. You don't have to gain root right away, but at least unlock the bootloader so you keep it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931865 but if you go that road.. its all you, i rather unlock the bootloader. easier on the long run
3) What is your location? Carrier?
4) There is only one recovery. Clockwork. Not many changes need to be done to the recovery in the first place. Once a stable version is out, it will remain that way. Recoveries don't get updated that much. I'd recommend the 4.0.0.2 modified version in the development forum than to the standard one. It is formatted a lot better than the original. If you wish to get the official one, download ROM manager from the market and flash it there. It will give you Clockwork v3.0.2.4.
To flash 4.0.0.2, you need to go into bootloader mode and use ADB (fastboot).
5) Fastboot allows you to flash custom image files such as bootloader, radio, recovery.
6) Superuser is 'administrative' access to your phone. It unlimits you and allows you to take full permissions all over your phone including changes outside of /sdcard/.
7) Let's use this as an example,
Android = Windows
ROM = Heavily modified version of Windows tweaked for faster speeds, new features, and so forth.
Flash Recovery allows you to flash custom ROMs & kernels.
Kernels... new features. Easy to do. Recommend Netarchy's 1.3.7 kernel.
8) Only one way to root the Nexus S. It's the easiest out of any other phone. One clicks are for lazy people.
9) Yes you can undo it. But you probably wont because custom ROMs are amazing.
10) Yes its worth rooting. You're asking about it, so you're obviously thinking about it. You can always unroot. But I doubt it
Anyway. Hit the thanks button, any more questions. Feel free to ask! I'll be here.
P.S. Just call it "NS" its not "SNS"

to flash means to install; or, to write the image to the partition.
an image is a copy of something. a partition is an area of your phone's storage. when you flash, you write the content of the image into the partition.
the main partitions are system, data, recovery, boot, and radio.
when you flash custom kernel, you are writing an image to the boot partition.
when you flash a custom rom, you are writing images to the boot and system partitions (roms usually include kernels to ensure compatibility).
when you flash a recovery, you are writing an image to the recovery partition.
when you factory reset, you are erasing the data partition.
also you can flash other partitions easily from a modified recovery. so the easiest way to set up your phone to be easily modified is to use a program called fastboot to flash a custom recovery image. then you boot your phone into that custom recovery and from there you can easily flash custom roms and kernels. and if all you want is to gain root access, then you just go into recovery and flash a superuser file.
hopefully that explains it!

A kernel is the "core" of an operating system which, in case of Android, is Linux. It provides interface to all hardware on you NS -- CPU, memory, touch screen, speaker, etc. (see the picture in the link)
Your NS cannot operate correctly without a compatible kernel, so mind what you are going to flash to your boot partition.

Pretty much what he said. I recommend a custom kernel such as Netarchy's kernel. Adds Voodoo Sound which is pretty much amazing. Custom kernels add a lot of custom features, highlights of the additional features can be found in a kernel thread such as OC, Voodoo Sound,Voodoo Color, Tunko, etc....
Thanks guys, u really helped me out, I'll work on rooting my NS right now

No, you don't have to wipe sdcard. Don't ever do that.
Only thing you need to wipe is factory settings, and cache, and dalvik when flashing one rom to another.
Upgrading from one rom to the same rom but a newer version, just flash but I usually wipe dalvik and cache. You don't have to.
Kernel is the same. The I wip those two, and you don't have to.
Wiping hose two doesn't make you lose any files or data. Just a longer first boot because android is rebuilding the cache

wiping dalvik and cache is only to do if you change the kernel at a rom! when you upgrade a rom, then the updater-script will do that, only to be correct

[Q] recovery v5.0.0.8 for the Sensation link not working

Hi there,
I am working through the Guide to Unlocking your Sensation and the link to recovery v5.0.0.8 for the Sensation is not working.
Is there another place I can download the file?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lizzie.
Edit:
Looks like someone updated the MultiUpload Link. Thanks guys!
You may download it from here: http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/ Just search for ....pyramid.img and flash from fastboot.
But I suggest you to get the latest v 5.0.2.0. Works fine in every aspect.

Edit : WrongForum ....
may i ask how to flash the .img file?
I'm using the guide to S-OFF etc...
It states to use recovery v5.0.0.8.

What's the best file? Does it need to be the Zip file?

I have uploaded CWM 5.0.2.0 here: http://www.axifile.com/en/EC384AC809
MD5: 85b5f10c9afe33fb50396bd5f54bc7de
I just flashed it on my phone and it seemed to work fine, I was on 5.0.2.0 and still am ;-)
I uploaded and downloaded it and it's the same MD5 as the one on my phone that worked.
Just rename to PG58IMG.zip boot up from scratch (Power and Vol -), vol + to flash. When it wants to reboot after flashing pop the SD-card out and rename it after booting.
I came across this, it might be abit outdated but I'm guessing it'll work fine.

If you Superwipe all data/apps on the phone will be zapped, the SD card should remain intact.

Yes, that was my exact feeling. I mean if you get a brand new £250 phone, then your not going to mess around with it, are you? No. You are going to try and get the prefect amount of information and clarity so you know you won't mess up.

In the ARHD (mike's) thread there is a SuperWipe script in the downloads. Use that when changing between ROM flavours, or if recommended by the dev when changing versions. E.g., VI from 2.0.0 -> 3.0.0 required a SuperWipe.
MAKE sure you take regular Nandroid backups before/after you changing anything.

I might write a guide from a noobs perspective (for noobs) on what to do...

Oh right ok, well I've been advised to change my recovery to EXT4, which I'll do tomorrow. Nandroid backups, is that when I go into HBOOT and choose Recovery? That's a good idea. So when I do go to update my ROM to ARHD 6.xxx for ICS I'll use Superwipe to clear out my app etc... So by using recovery I'll keep my app data/saves etc?

Quick newbiesh question about kernels

Forgive my ignorance, i've tried to do a few searches to answer my question but none have directly addressed it.
I recently rooted 2.20 successfully, installed CleanROM. If I want to flash a kernel, say cleanKERNEL, all I have to do is move the .zip onto the phone, boot into bootloader, and flash it that way? If I flash a kernel, will I loose all the customization I've done on the current ROM?
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm unclear on whether you can flash kernels with the new hboot in 2.20, but if you can, you flash it like anything else. It shouldn't affect the rom as long as they're compatible.

Oh right... It builds the boot.img on the fly when it is installed from recovery. I believe you need to try and flash the kernel zip file from recovery. It will fail since you have to 2.20 hboot, but it will create the boot.img in a temp dir somewhere on your phone, which you can copy to your pc and flash via fastboot.

Yes, except for the very last step of re-flashing from recovery. I haven't personally tried this since I'm not on AT&T and can flash whatever from recovery, but I've seen this method discussed several times in the Blackout BeastMode custom kernel thread.

Looks like the people in the blackout beastmode thread already have a boot.img for them to use without looking for the one created in the temp file. Unless I can just use the boot.img from cleanROM which I'm already running? Or the kernel requires its on boot.img??

Hmmm... I thought Blackout BeastMode created boot.img on the fly. Perhaps not. The next thread I would direct you to is the CleanROM thread. Or you could try the BeastMode kernel haha. Sorry can't be more help. I just don't have any first-hand experience.
Has anyone else flashed CleanKernel on 2.20 AT&T device?

Flash new kernel through TWRP?

Hey guys,
Long story short, I'm running MIUI 2.11.9 and want to switch kernels to Jacobs.b3. I've never flashed kernels before, but I've done ROMS all the time. Can I just flash the boot.img file in TWRP? Do I need to clear cache or anything?
Cheers.
Yes, you flash kernels just like you flash roms except that there is no need to do a full wipe across different kernels--they fully replace each other, unlike roms. Wiping caches is still good practice though.
Thanks, that's all I needed to hear.
If you are on the 1.14 hboot, you will need to flash the kernel using fastboot. Otherwise just flash in TWRP. I always wipe cache and Dalvik whenever flashing anything. Just to be safe, and it can't hurt anything.

I don't know anything about that phone. You should post in your device specific forum section, as technical advice often differs from one device to another.
Following advice intended for another device can cause permanent damage to your phone.

Posting to completely unrelated device forums won't help that.
This is simply the wrong place for your question.

New to One S and need some help

Hi,
Normally, I try to troubleshoot things myself without bothering others, but I'm in need of help this time. The tricky part is, I just bought this HTC One S from a stranger, so I don't have its complete history. With that said, here's what I need help with. The phone came with Pacman installed (v18.0.0). But, I would like to install this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2082451
It's basically a stock ICS ROM (the lite version mentioned with stuff removed). In attempt to do this myself, I found this post on here:
Yes the only other solution for you involves rooting. It is possible to go back to ICS by rooting your phone, going through a bootloader downgrade, hexediting a particular partition, then running an older compatible RUU... Its all possible, but requires some time to understand and do. And definately requires a few wipes of phone data in the mean time (which can be backed up through titanium and custom recoveries).
Only need to do that if you want to downgrade hboot. All you have to do is root and flash a rom, I have JB radio and hboot and run ICS Trickdroid 8.1.0.
So, I put the ICS ROM in the internal sdcard, did the usual wiping stuff (I've owned several HTC phones, so this part I know how), then installed the ROM. Unfortunately, it didn't work. When I rebooted the phone, it got stuck in boot loop. It would go to HTC logo screen with the development purpose only warning and just keep turning off and on. Fortunately, I was able to get back into recovery and restored it to Pacman. So, apparently, you can't just flash any ICS ROM over JB setup... Can someone help me figure out what I need to do to install that modified stock ROM please? I very much appreciate your help. My One S is S4 from T-Mobile.
Thank you,
GT
Did you flash boot.img?

thats weird.. if you wipe cache, dalvik, factory reset and system.. it should be fine.
which recovery do you have? cwm or twrp? flashing the rom after wiping everything i stated before, and then flashing boot.img depending on your hboot [btw, go to bootloader and see what it says for hboot. if it is higher than 1.13, you need to fastboot boot.img.

no prob, i HIGHLY suggest you flash TWRP recovery.. it's a loot better.
2. are you trying to install a TMOUS ROM?
3. since your hboot is higher than 1.13, you will need to fastboot boot.img [let me know if you know how to do that]
4. also since your hboot is higher than 1.13, you will need to flash some partitions or else your WiFi won't work.
Let me know if you need help doing any of the above, but start out with installing TWRP first.

Thank you for such a prompt reply. Here are some of my answers.
2. Yes, the ROM I want to install is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2082451
It's the light version mentioned in that first post.
3. I just read up on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752270
I think I got the idea, but just to double check, is this what I need to do after every time I install a custom ROM?
4. The partition files exist on the phone already, and I read some, so I have a basic understanding of it. But, the developer of the ROM I want to install says it is not necessary with that ROM, so hopefully that's true.
I am amazed by how different everything is from a HTC phone to another HTC phone even when they seem so similar!
A quick question. Does EXT4 exist for HTC One S? I used to use that for HTC Sensation and loved it. I'm guessing no, but I thought I'd ask.
So, to sum it up, is this what I need to do?
1. Flash TWRP recovery (please tell me how to find the right version for S4. all in one toolkit doesn't work on my phone).
2. Wipe everything and install the ROM
3. Flash boot.img
4. If wifi is not working, try the partition files
Please let me know if I got this right. Thank you,

If the Toolkit can't see your phone then you might need to install the drivers that come with it for it to work.

3. Yes, since your hboot is higher than 1.13, you will need to fastboot boot.img everytime you flash a ROM, unless you want to downgrade?
3.5: like Darknites said, you will need to install drivers for your the One S if you haven't already. You can download HTC Sync, and they'll install automatically [this is needed for being able to fastboot the boot.img]
4. They do exist, but everytime you wipe before flashing a ROM, they also get deleted, but try using the ROM without flashing the partition files and see if it works, if not then flash the partition files.
5. Yes, I'm pretty sure EXT4 exists with the One S, but am not 100% sure, maybe someone else can confirm this?
Lastly, here is where you download TWRP:
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/100
scroll down and download the link for the S4 VARIANT, but you need to have drivers installed before doing this. and you will need to fastboot the recovery, since the download is an image: to do so, go into cmd, type cd c:\ (whatever your fastboot folder is called) and enter
then, type: fastboot flash [name of recovery, which is the name of the file you downloaded).img. Should take about 2 seconds to flash.
BTW, here are the drivers:

Thank you, dr_rick13 and other kind members who responded to my call for help.
I was able to troubleshoot this, and now my phone's working the way I wanted it. Just one correction on dr_rick13's instruction:
then, type: fastboot flash [name of recovery, which is the name of the file you downloaded).img. Should take about 2 seconds to flash
recovery is missing in that line, so it should be fastboot flash recovery [name of recovery, which is the name of the file you downloaded).img
I know it was just a typo or forgot to write it, but I wanted to point this out in case some other user finds this thread and follows that instruction.
All in all, thanks for everything! You guys rock!

I'm new here too. I understand that you need to flash the boot.img with that hboot, but why? And will it ever be fixed?
I've owned and rooted many a phones and never had to do that. Just curious why it's like that, and if it will be fixed. It's just easier to not be that way. Again, I'm new here, just trying to understand

we do not have S-OFF yet, so until we do.. people with hboots 1.13+ will need to flash boot.img. But HTC still hasn't said anything about when we will get S-OFF or if we will get it.

Its just the way HTC wants us to do it and maybe they feel it be better for us but mostly them. There is a way round it but you have to downgrade the Hboot.

Thanks. Is there any downside to downgrading the hboot? Why don't people do that instead?
When I had the Amaze, the recovery 4ext had "smart flash" which did this same thing because it was s-on

Because of Linux and the fact you brick it to do it too. We meant to be getting 4ext but don't know when.

This seems like out would make things so much easier. I'm not always around a pc when wanting to flash things. If I use this, I should be able to flash away.
But what about resorting nandroids. This doesn't work with that. Hmmm
Just trying to wrap my mind around it
