[Q] merging my own contact in ICS? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do I merge my ICS local profile on my nexus with my gmail contacts profile?
ICS asks for a profile name and info, and I enter it. But I do find it useless as I have a complete profile of myself on my gmail contacts....
Heeter

I hope to learn the answer to this, as well.

Facebook app

Which app do you advise ? The Samsung integrated in the Social Hub or the official one from the market ?
I come from a TP where I really liked HTC's integration of facebook in Sense. Not too invasive and living quite well with my exchange account
Right now my contacts in my outlook (2011) on my PC are linked with their facebook profile, and so are they in Sense. With my Tab I worry a little bit about putting a mess in a system that has found its balance
Any risk to duplicate contacts if I use the Samsubg app ? Or the Android app ? Will they merge properly with my exchnage contacts ? Stay aside ?
I just dont wnat to make the step to find out after I messed up my contact list (More than 1200 people so clenaing that up would take me a few days....)
Hi I use Facebook from the market and also use one called boo

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The built-in one is pretty much for synching only, any actual facebook viewing would need to be done via the browser.
I switched from the built-in SNS client to the official Facebook client and didn't experience any problems.

I haven't installed anything yet Not tryig to fix anything just trying to be sure what I'll do wont create troubles to my contact list
The built-in app is just meant to sync your existing contacts on the phone and match them with facebook friends ? Or it adds all the facebook friends ?
The official app doesnt do this ?
Don't get the account permissions confused if you install the market app. Its annoying to find you gave the stock app permissions that arent on the market app.

Both versions sync contact pictures etc. The official app gives you the option to sync pictures+status updates with all friends, just those with existing contact entries, or none at all.

Anyone ? Maybe I am making too much fuss about this but I dont wnat to mes up my exchange contact list...
Not 100% sure about this, but I don't think it will mess up any of your existing contacts.
When logging in using the official Facebook app, it will create a sort of 'profile' for all existing contacts -- it won't merge info with the actual contact. You'll see this when you edit a contact, there will be 2 (or more) tabs when editing the contact.
It's like a 'Metacontact' in Trillian wherein it's only a merged 'View' of a contact, but in reality the data is in separate 'profiles'. The Facebook tab is uneditable and will only display info.
The only problem I have so far is that when creating a new SMS, it will display -ALL- contact numbers and e-mail address of contacts, even if the number is exactly the same:
i.e. I have a contact named Bob Smith in my Google, Exchange and Facebook accounts, and they are merged as one account. In the Dialer, all the info is merged into one contact when displaying, but when editing, they are editable in 3 separate tabs.
However when I create an SMS and scroll to find Bob Smith, it displays all contact infos of Bob Smith, even duplicate ones, like if I have his number +123456789 on Google and Exchange and Facebook, it displays 3 same numbers when selecting a recipient.
Edit:
Also, when you sign out or remove the Facebook app, it will delete the Facebook 'profile' of the contact on your contacts list, maintaining the state of the previous contact before you logged in / installed Facebook.
Thanks a lot, that's good to know
I already saw the mess it was having google contacts and exchnage contacts (I usually maintain both... for 1200 contacts!) The worst is for contacts for which I entered only the first name... they happen to be all merged together (Well done samsung... They could have defined a merge key a bit larger than just the name........)
What about when you use the Samsung app ?? Someone knows ?

[Q] Is phone-only, unsynced contacts profile under ICS possible?

Untill Google get off their asses and fix the low-res issue Gmail Contacs has, I tried to work around this, as I did on froyo and gingerbread and save all my contacts under a phone-only, unsynced profile so I can add hi-res images of my own and not have Google mess them up on the next sync.
However I have yet to manage to do this under ICS. Is it no longer possible?
AOSP+ 2.2.5 ROM
Nexus S i9023
fb doesn't sync in my ics, any ideas ?
While I appreciate the bump it's unrelated to my issue.

Give this a try
There is an app that allows you to import appointments from iCal files now while that is not you issue to do this the app creates a dummy account on the phone that is unsynced and at least in previous android (i.e. froyo and gingerbread) you were able to add contacts under that account.
So hopefully this works for you.
Also just to mention this app is not mine nor have I had any input into it.

I've been trying to add contacts to be new phone and haven't been able to because it wants to sync with my work email account or my gmail. Neither of which do I want my personal contacts synced with.
Does anyone know of a way to save an unsynced contacts in ICS or Jellybean????

[Q] Google contacts sync issue on ICS leak

KNOWN ISSUE FOR UCLC4 leak ONLY (CONFIRMED):
1- Add a new contact in phone and add it as "Google contact" to your gmail.com account entered in phone.
2- Force a sync now in settings > Accounts & Sync.
3- Login to your gmail. View contacts. Is the new contact in your Gmail contacts list?
METHOD 2 (DOES NOT FIX Sync issue but was my attempt to...):
1- Export contacts displayed in phone to vcf file on SD Card.
2- Wipe all contacts on phone, push sync. THIS WILL PUSH a delete sync to google contacts on server. Continue to confirm mass delete until it is completely sync'd and contacts are gone from servers.
3- Import VCF contacts to PHONE but NOT as GOOGLE contacts.
4- Perform Merge to google. Force a sync.
Does contacts appear in Gmail Contacts or Google contacts on server?
THIS IS A CONFIRMED ISSUE with ICS 4.0 UCLC4 leak!! FIXED IN UCLD2 leak!!
wow.... no one is getting new numbers to add to their phone huh?? interestingly small.....closed world.... lol
I can confirm the sync issue

Thank you for responding. Anyone else? Just create a random number in your phone, force the sync on contacts.
Login to gmail . View contacts. Does that contact come up?
I don't talk to strangers why do I want their number in my phone?

Must not be a lady's man; or you're too young, or you're married and too old.
if you're old, but not too old; you must not do well with your coworkers outside of your job?
lol jk jk
confirmed issue on my end. ended up losing a friends contact info cause of it.
There is an option in the settings to merge contacts with google. Only i am not sure if that will merge everything with my google address book or not. Don't want to do that.
Confirmed the issue
I have saved contacts to a VCF file on external SD; imported as PHONE CONTACTS ONLY. Then cleared all my google contacts in gmail.
Then go back to my phone and perform a "MERGE WITH GOOGLE". Then force a sync. It does not push those contacts back to google servers. !!!
Any word on a fix or work around for this yet?

The only fix is to add contacts to phone, export phone-only contacts to VCard. Import to google contacts in web browser. Force sync. Google server will push it out back to phone and keep it in gmail servers.
This is truly kind of annoying.. Lost a girl's number cause of this. Lucky she stalked me otherwise I could have been SOL.
Is anyone working on a solution not workaround to this?

I wish I would have read this before. I lost like 80 contacts!!!
Oh mama...
And i was about to install one of the new ROMS.
I am shocked nobody notice this till now. I add one of two contacts a day.
Hit the THANKS if this helped ya, then maybe a MOD will see this and make it a sticky? cuz this is probably the #1 biggest bug in ICS for our phones LOL
I deleted a number for one of my contacts and added a new number for them through google voice on the web....and my phone updated with the change with in 5min running the ICS leak

If you take a look at my ICS 4.0 bugs & quirks thread; you will see that ANY change on google WEB... WILL push back to phone. But new contact / number in PHONE will NOT push back to google web / servers.
This is what i found so far. Okay well hope this helps someone to find a fix...
1. create new contact in phone, wont sync with google account.
2. create new contact on line (google account), syncs with phone
3. Edit existing contacts in phone, all edits to contact made in the phone will sync with google account.
So if you have an existing contact and and you edit any fields from the phone, the changes will sync up with your google account. Only new contacts created in the phone will not sync.
Does saving to the contact to phone then doing a merge work? This is a shame.
there is a contacks.apk that works. unfortunately I can't do any manual dialing after. in the themes and apps section there is a thread on inverted apps. I am going to look to see if I can get the corresponding phone.apk to see if that works. but I did save a contact and the addition was pushed to google.

[Q] Merging local profile on ICS?

Hi all,
I am wondering about this:
There is a local profile in the contacts list on my ICS, it is my information about myself. Can't I just be able to merge with my gmail information, which is already in the contacts list?
Thanks
Heeter
damn wish someone had replied to this, just realised that the 'local profile' doesn't connect with the google profile that you sign in with when you first start your phone (first initial boot i mean) which is kinda useless because i have my contact info in another contact, so is there anyway to merge the 2 for future use (i have started to use roms on my nexus s now so would be handy to know).

[Q] How to automatically sync contacts to Google

I flash a lot of ROMs and every time I lose a couple of contacts because they aren't synced to my account. Is there any way to change a setting so that every contact created on my HOX is a Google contact?

It should be as simple as when you flash your rom, and then when you add your Google account to your phone, simply say yes to syncing your Contacts along with any other settings you want to sync.
If you want to check to see if the rom you are currently running has that already set or not just go to Settings, Accounts and Sync, then select your Google account in the list.
I think the original question was misunderstood.
The original question is: How do you change the default New Contact creation from being a local Phone contact and instead make it so that the default is a Google contact.
I just looked and I had two contacts that were local Phone contacts which I missed when creating them to be a new Google contact.

I'd like to know, also. I've had the same thing happen to me the last couple of times.

Good luck. I searched for a week for an answer to this question, and it doesn't exist. You just have to be vigilant and every once in a while inventory / audit your contacts to make sure they're set up correctly, and if not, do a one-way copy. I just always make sure my "phone" contacts is ZERO.
I had to go to manage contacts and then copy all new contacts to my Google account
Somehow the contacts are stored in separate accounts ae Google and phone
I just copied all phone contacts to the Google contacts
