[Q] HTC Locations - HTC Sensation

Probably a complete noob question but I'll ask anyway.
The trial period on Locations has just expired on my new Sensation XE and every time I put the phone in the car cradle it attempts to start it. Of course after checking for a licence it comes up with the buy licence screen which is really annoying and a waste of time.
Can I simply uninstall locations & if so will it then default to Google maps & navigation?
Whats everone's favorite for a car mode system?
Thanks in advance.
Jon

Yeah uninstalling it should be fine.

OK so real noob question, I don't seem to be able to un-install locations. Can this be removed or is it in the ROM?
Tried going to the applications manager but there is no option to un-install.
Any help please.

It's in your system/app , just use any file explorer to remove it. Must have soff and root.

This, or you could use Titanium Backup.
Filter so it only shows 'system' apps and it should be there.

Thanks guys,
epsix, whats soff and root?
k0zmic, I'll install titanium & try it that way cheers.
By the way as Locations is provided as a trial version whats the "official" answer to this if you don't want to buy the app, surely htc don't expect us to have a defunct piece of software popup every time we use the phone?

So spoke to HTC yesterday and it seems that yes they do expect us to put up with the buy licence nag screen when using the car cradle. Apparently there is no way to say no to buying a licence once & for all
Locations itself still works & the navigation package still works you just have to cancel the nag screen & start again manually. Of course you loose the car panel & premium navigation but as I couldn't really tell much difference between them that's no loss.
Have installed EVA & Vlingo & will see which one I prefer before deleting Locations.
Pity, that's the first negative I've found since moving to Android from Windows.

Anyone know how? I don't need these trial games.

The only way to remove those apps which are locked down by the carrier is to root your phone (whenever that comes out), and use titanium to remove/disable the apps.

Temp root it with visionary (search market) and use this method to disable apps:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/10/15/how-to-disable-system-apps-on-devices-with-nand-protection/
It won't delete the apk but will disable it from running and clogging up resources. They also won't show up anymore in the launcher. I've temp rooted my mytouch 4g just fine using visionary just haven't gotten around to run all the scripts to remove all the bloatware yet.
Install Visionary for temp root, then install Titanium Backup, click problems and say yes to download Busybox. After that click backup/restore and from there you can remove any app PERMANTLY! Hope this helps =)
Don't they just reappear the moment you reboot?

EDIT: Never mind! Everything came back after a reboot.
I'll try the other method and report back. Thanks anyway.

You actually REMOVED the app and it came back? Oh man that's some crazy lockdown.
It's nuts that the phones are locked down now. The only people who will "accidentally" break them are people who know what they're doing (and those who are willing to take a risk). I can't believe HTC/T-Mo when they say this is a preventative measure. Which smart person will boot up the phone while holding the vol down key and wipe their phone? They'll get scared and pull the battery!

If this is really the way it's going to be, then they must have had a business case for taking those measures. These companies are out to make money, not to make toys for the homebrew community.
My guess is that they were getting more returns/exchanges than they were comfortable with. I mean, let's be honest here. How many of us know folks who have returned a bricked device saying "it just stopped working?" I personally know people who have tried rooting/moding phones without the least bit of knowledge of how it all works. I know because I'm the one getting calls to help out...
When that **** happens, TMO ends up in a difficult position. They're not going to call their customers liars, and they can't refuse to exchange the phone.
I wish they would give people an option to "buy" root. You pay $25 for an unlock, and your warranty is immediately and automatically voided. That way, only people who know what they're doing will sign up for it.

Can you confirm that you did a full reboot after this removal method (vs just down to a 'quick' reboot) and that they stayed gone?
Why do you guys want to completely remove something? Why not just disable it? Same effect.... You will never need more space in /system/app since you can't even write to that and if you disable it - it's gone from the launcher and does not hog memory/cpu. And you can re-enable it in case you want to use it again.
Look here for directions (thanks to Paul O'Brien)

I have no idea why it didn't work. I did exactly what the instruction said. Nothing changed, I'm assuming it doesn't work for the myTouch4G.
myTouch4G (Glacier)
Let me clear this up for everyone. What the OP (or 2nd 3rd post?) suggested does not work permanently. I have both a G2 and a myTouch 4G, they have the exact same read-only system memory.
The major difference between the G2 and the myTouch 4G, and why the OP thinks this works, is because the myTouch has fast boot. With this enabled (and it was on mine by default) you can turn "off" the phone and turn it back on without loosing root, or in this case, having apps magically reappear.
However, if you actually REALLY turn OFF the phone, either by disabling fast boot or simply removing your battery, they are going to come right back. The only permanent solution is to disable them, and you can find Paul's post in the G2 forums about how to do that using a terminal with root access.

The envy is setting in, at least until tomorrow morning.
Picked one up this morning. This is my first Android based phone, so it will take some getting used to. Other than that, the phone's build quality is exceptional.
P.S. - I noticed there is no way to see raw files and folders, I'm assuming there is an app for that.

HTC Official Skins
I'm having trouble logging into HTC Sense so was wondering if any could post the official HTC skins downloadable from HTC (Slate, Black Board, HTC, etc.). FYI, xda search is temporarily unavailable at the moment.
Edit: I just extracted the APK from the stock zip. If there are more than three stock HTC skins, please post. THX.

Wow, AT&T blocks non market apps?

That is so pathetic. Just another reason to hate that company.
Anyway...my friend just got an inspire and is new to android. I'm just helping with the phone (I have a verizon android phone) and realized that AT&T finds someway to screw with consumers again. So, is there a way to get around this and install non market apps?

You can use sideload wonder machine http://forum.androidcentral.com/android-sideload-wonder-machine/
Or root the phone and load a custom ROM that has non market apps enabled
the sideload wonder machine method is sipmple the only drawback is that the apps wont receive updates like they would from the market, if I'm not mistaken.
Also if I remember correctly if the app is to big for side load wonder machine, you can use adb push. There are always work arounds.

That's why it's such a sweet feeling when you uninstall their application through TiBu........
You can also consider rooting the device. I did mine with no issues at all. It's VERY easy, just time consuming. From start to finish, took me about 35 minutes. I already had EVERYTHING I needed to do this though, including the ROM I wanted.

You want good go to Amazon App store, in the past few days I got a full version of Shazam and then SoundHound. Both have full unlimited use with no expiration, also if you change rom's you can redownload them from your account for as long as you have the account. They give away a full paid app everyday on there.

Firewalls?!!!

Hi peeps,
Honeymoon over with my new phone, realising some of the apps I use to take for granted on Android HD2, can't be used on Sensation.
Most important for me Droidwall.
Anyone know which firewalls, work and can run on a non rooted handset?
Side query, what's best way of removing ads? Never realised there was ads in apps. As it was already fixed in the custom roms. I presume u need a rooted phone, not the end of the world. handset is a joy to use.

i all ready have a flashable add-on but it wont work till we get custom recovery and to replace the file your self you still need root becuase its in the system folder
Why do you use Droidwall if I may ask?
I have always seen it referred to as a placebo if anything.
Now people are seeing why I'm not buying the Sensation till it's cracked and rooted.
Android converts via the HD2 have all been using a rooted form of Android and never knew what life was like in the "locked down" world. I'm an Android convert via the HD2 myself, and knew complaints of this sort would be coming.
DroidWall is a great means to keep apps from eating data without knowing. Also a good means to keep Android from phoning home if that is of any concern to a user.

Mdeejays rom ate all my data allowance in standby on my HD2. Droidwall stopped this happening, blocking everything except the apps you want to use data.
Although changing to Boyppc rom, the data usage wasnt half as much. Hmm?

I agree. But it was upgrade time and having a 1080p camcorder enticed me to buy. Once you get over it being locked down, for now, it really is a joy to use. Every little niggle the HD2 had is gone. But yeah, rom wise, Boyppc rom makes HD2 a perfectly capable handset.

Nope, I won't be getting over it. I won't be buying the Sensation till it's unlocked.
My HD2 with the latest NexusHD2-Gingerbread has zero issues, none.
So no way I'm taking a step backward to lockdown, never.
I use several apps that require root. And I'm also not buying something I can't keep custom ROMs on.
Enjoy yours, but I'll pass if it's not unlocked.
These devices now cost way too much to compromise.

Sadly, it's not included on the T-Mobile Sensation in the US.
Whether we can get it later once root is available remains to be seen.
Tmobile US took it out. Read this thread to see what else they took out
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125913
I read some were that htc location is only availible in Europe at the moment but should be arriving in the us sometime around october. I hope this is true I saw the htc sense demo of what locations can do I think its awsome but for now I guess Google maps can do
I have Asian version and it has location.
I signed into the htc hub and installed/enabled it. I just can't seem to find the website that allows me to track it.
edit: Nevermind. Went to htcsense.com logged in, and it's working.
edit2: Awesome, I tried the lock/unlock feature. Very cool. It's nice to have this semi-bundled.
edit3: It's called phone finder, and once installed you turn it on and off under settings>location
How I just looked for it and its not there in the hub
Is there any way to install the European version of the ROM or does that require the phone to be rooted?

I was thinking the OP was referring to the GPS app called Locations that's bundled on Euro Sensations. You seem to be talking about a service to locate your phone. Not the same.
I'm not sure you want it my Voda Uk model has it but means if I want to ba able to use the navigate link in appointments I have to pay for mavigation software or copy and paste into Maps as you CANNOT change the default app used.
HTC have confirmed this to me so you would need to be able to root the phone to change this.
GET YOUR FINGER OUT HTC
really annoyed at them swapping pay material for free material and removing any ability to change it back.
It is genuinely making me think twice about getting a HTC next if this is the direction they are going in.
