[Q] Idolian Tablet - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys, I have rooted many phones and never had a problem. My question is this, I just bought a new Idolian tablet running android 2.3 and was wondering if their is a way to root this device?
The tablet only cost $99.99 and can be found at Idolian.com. It had great reviews and seems to be a new device. I searched this forum and could nothing about it.
Thanks,

I got a different inexpensive tablet running android 2.2, a Sumas Media SMT-708PAD. I used Universal Androot to root it work without any problems. Also could try SuperOneClick.
I gave it to my wife to replace her color handspring (PalmOS) to play games on.
How do you like the Idolian and which one did you get? I ran into it looking for an inexpensive 7" tablet that has bluetooth, gps, sd card and usb (A and B).

i used super one click to root both my idolian tablets.

Idolian Turbotab C8
Here we go!
I bought an idolian turbotab c8 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007REMD84/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00)
Seemed like a great buy. Company said it had google play and flash support, etc with ICS...It does, only they don't work, even when I've reset it several times. Their tech support isn't that tech saavy.
So, I figured I would try installing Clockwork recovery mod and CM-9 for the LY-F1, which was a very similiar model and give it a shot, if not, then I could install the stock rom from the idolian website: http://www.idolian.com/downloads.aspx
I'm using ubuntu 12.04 LTS and sdk-tools with adb.
Through the command prompt, I've downloaded CWM recovery from here:
http://www.tekunix.com/downloads/CWMRecovery.rar
and CM9 via here: http://www.mirrorcreator.com/files/X...9_v9.zip_links
All of which was referenced by this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662324&page=11
Which has been very helpful.
After using adb to push the flash_image and the recovery.img to /data/local/

/data/local/flash_image[1]: syntax error: '^AP$I4T^B^D4' unexpected
So...any idea why there's that syntax error?
I really would like to try and post more about this turbotab c8 tablet, because there's just not a whole lot of info out there about it.

[Q] LG Optimus V: Stuck on "Waiting for device..." on SuperOneClick

Hey guys, this is my first post, and I just wanted to say first off that all of you who have figured out how to root phones are awesome! Because of xda-developers and androidforums, I helped a friend root and put cyanogenmod 6 on his HTC Hero (cdma).
Anyway, I'm trying to put Zefie's CM7 on my LG Optimus V, and I'm stuck. First off I'm trying to root my phone. I'm following this guide: [How-To] Root the LG Optimus V on Android Central (I'd post the link, but the system won't let me since I'm a new user.). Usually I'd follow the instructions step by step, but I had to make some changes. I see this guide is written for Windows, but I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. After doing a lot of searching I was able to figure out that I had to install the Linux version of the Android SDK and use mono to run SuperOneClick.exe. That part was easy since I have a good knowledge of Linux and how it runs. The part that I'm stuck at is performing a Shell Root. When I click on Shell Root, SuperOneClick is stuck at "Waiting for device..." It's been like this for a while. If I click on Root, it gets stuck at "chmod psneuter..." Either way it's stuck and I don't know what to do.
Just to let you guys know, I have USB Debugging turned on, and I'm running Android version 2.2.1.
When I rooted my friend's HTC Hero, all I had to do was run a downloaded apk onto his SD card and run it, and then it would instantly root it. Is there a similar apk for the Optimus V? If not, is there a way I can manually root it via the terminal? Anyway, I'm stuck and would appreciate any suggestions or comments. Don't forget, I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, so some issues may arise since the tutorial was meant to be run on Windows machines.
Later tonight I'm going to try to root my phone at my friend's house since he has a computer running Windows XP. Hopefully I can get some better progress on his computer instead of mine. Thanks in advance for all your help!
Okay, nevermind. I did a little more searching and found a way to root my phone without running SuperOneClick.exe. I'll post if I have any more problems.
Well I spoke too soon. Here are the steps I followed to get to a # prompt in adb:
./adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
./adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
./adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
I then did the following commands:
adb shell
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /system /system
exit
adb push su /system/bin
adb push busybox /system/bin
adb shell
cd /system/bin
chmod 4755 su
chmod 555 busybox
exit
adb reboot
After rebooting the phone, I installed Superuser and TitaniumBackup. I opened TitaniumBackup and it gave me an error stating that it could not acquire root privileges. I know for a fact that my phone has su and Busybox installed on it and have the correct permissions.
What bugs me even more is that when I run su via the adb shell root prompt or a terminal emulator on my phone, it returns the following error:
link_image[1997]: failed to link su
CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE
What's up with that? I did find out that some people have had issues with Android 2.2.1 on their phone, and unfortunately that's what my phone had when I bought it about a month ago.
Okay, I figured it out finally and have my phone rooted. I had to run SuperOneClick.exe on my buddy's Windows computer. Instead of doing a Shell Root, I just clicked Root and it rooted. Now I'm stuck at figuring out how to do a Nandroid backup. I backed up everything using Titanium Backup, but I know I want to make a backup rom in case something goes wrong during the flash. What are the steps to performing a Nandroid backup?
Lol nevermind. I got Zefie's CM7 up and running this morning.
Nandroid is made using recovery. Glad you got it working

[Q] Rooting the motorola atrix 2

i tried a few ways to root my atrix 2 but i cant. I tried super one click, lazy one click (or however its called) and i cant root it i have a mac someone help! is there another way to root the atrix 2?
I heard there was an app that can do it too. Its in this forum somewhere.
I used the manual method on my Mac with no issues, did it twice actually.
What error messages are you getting?
I'll be home in about 15 mins and I can help further
Sent from my MB865 using Tapatalk
If all else fails, you could always reflash the fkz's, than try to root again, but the problem here is that you have a mac. Perhaps borrow a friends pc, or install Windows through bootcamp. (I wouldn't recommend a Virtual Machine though).
OK so if you used a root tool in the first place then I assume that-
-You have adb set up
-You have the necessary files to push (zerg, su, superuser.apk)
If you have no idea of what I'm talking about then just look around the folders of the root tools and you'll find them.
OK, here's what you have to do:
1. Open up a terminal.
2. CD (change directory) to where you have the necessary files located, ex. "cd ~/Desktop/" if they're on the desktop
3. Enter the following commands (one line at a time):
Code:
adb shell
cd /data/local
rm ./temp/*
exit
This removes temporary files created by the root exploit.
4. Now enter these commands (again, one at a time)
Code:
adb push zerg /data/local
adb push su /data/local
adb push Superuser.apk /data/local
adb shell
cd /data/local
chmod 777 zerg
./zerg
adb shell
mount -o rw,remount /dev/null /system
cat /data/local/su > /system/bin/su
cat /data/local/Superuser.apk > /system/app/Superuser.apk
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
chmod 4755 /system/app/Superuser.apk
reboot
I hope you understand this... good luck getting complete root.
thread moved to general forum
If you find a specific android app that can do this for you and you can post it in the OP, I will gladly move it down to its original location. Until there, it doesnt belong in the app and themes forums.
What's your android version ?

You're correct, the app was written by an author who made it just to make money... he never even tested it. He took it down because it didn't work.
Most important question of all here: What OS are you running on your Mac?
If you're running 2.3.6 you can't root yet. You need to downgrade to 2.3.5

Root for my Newsmy T3 android 4 tablet

Can I root to my Newsmy T3 7" Android 4.0 Tablet?

Ah sorry didn't realise t3 and t7 were different. As said just started research on this. The tablet is for my young daughter (under 3!) and it keeps her busy doing YouTube etc. Bought it a month ago but didn't decide to research and install a rom on it as it's been okay until I installed games on it this week and zaps battery.
I only know I got her a newsmy 7inch tablet, will look into what model heh. If it's a t3 I will look for it as well and let you know if I find one or will look into writing one as I've got back into coding after 6-7 year absence due to a motorbike injury.
Root for Newsmy T3
Hey Guys, I just got one of these tablets and I was able to root mine quickly by following the instructions on this forum.
http://www.flashmyandroid.com/forum/showthread.php?309-ROOT-TOOL-for-ICS-4-0-3
download link for files: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1503729/RK2918_4.0_ROOT.rar
thanks Dave.S for posting it!
When I first tried to root mine I had some problems getting the correct drivers installed and I stumbled upon the Knives-and-Fork tool made by DieHappy that was very helpful and it sets up ADB nicely. http://forums.acsyndicate.net/showthread.php?5008
Succesfully rooted my Newsmy T3
It is strange but this fine tablet (Newsmy T3) is poorly covered in the web. It has been very difficult to find any info about flashing or rooting it let alone finding the correct rom.
I just managed to root the device. It was not so easy as implied in some posts because adb shell was unable to copy superuser.apk and su to the revelant folders even after remounting system as rw. But it seems that this tablet comes with busybox preinstalled (even though as non routed, busybox cant work properly until you root the device). So when connected via adb shell you can copy the above files to system/app and /bin respectively by issuing the revelant busybox commands. In brief do the following:
1) Google for superuser.apk and su for ICS 4.0.4 and download the two files.
2) Send those files to your sdcard with adb (issue those 2 commands: adb push superuser.apk /sdcard/superuser.apk and adb push su /sdcard/su)
3) Go into console mode (adb shell) and issue the following commands:
4) su (gain original privileges)
5) mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mtdblock8 /system (This remounts the system folder as rw)
There is already a su file under system/xbin (or system/bin) on this device, now it is time to copy it on your sdcard as a backup in case something goes wrong.
Now with the help of busybox you can copy su and superuser to the desired locations...
6) busybox cp /sdcard/superuser.apk /system/app/superuser.apk
7) busybox cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
8) busybox cp /sdcard/su /system/xbin/su
Next, set the correct permissions for su:
9) busybox chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
10) busybox chmod 6755 /system/xbin/su
All ok now exit adb shell...
11) exit
At this point your newsmy T3 is already rooted and you can check it with any free software like rootcheck. Once checked, reboot the device and youre done.
Hope this helps.

No problem.
You actually left out a step. In order to push su to the phone you have to adb remount -o rw. Otherwise it is a read-only filesystem and it cannot be pushed to the phone. Most people would probably get this, but the novices who end up with bricked phones will be angry.
Great work!

Actually no, you are incorrect.
adb remount without the additional parameters is correct, and not possible of bricking a phone with adb remount. No novice would be angry, because there is not possible brick from this guide, as long as it is followed.

Did not unlock my lgl35g
Yes I am a Noob... nobody likes me
I have exhausted every resource that I could find on this phone. I thought that this post was the answer to my problem, however it did not seem to help at all. Everything seemed as if it was working fine as I went step by step through the process. However, I rebooted my phone and there is no difference then when I started. The "su.zip" file enclosed in this post was not able to extract into the directory of my ADB client. It kept saying root already existed, but I was unable to see it in windows explorer? Is this "su.zip" a modified version of a pre-existing file in the SDK kit? I really need to unlock this phone so that I can clean up the junk. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone know of a rooted ROM
I have looked all over, but it doesn't look like a dev has created a ROM for this device. Has anyone come across one? If I knew programming I would give it a shot, but it's a mystery to me. I know that CyanogenMod 9 for the L3 (e400) works, but there is a problem with the radios, hence no cellular, wifi, or bluetooth.
Source code......

This guy had some success with CM9, but no radio. Anyone know how to extract the radio? I've never built a rom, but this is tempting.

TWRP for the new cat flip phone?

The novel CAT S22 Flip was released in September, and is pretty much the only of its kind. It actually has an unlocked bootloader, and I was excited to try to root it. However, there's no version of TWRP designed specifically for it! Having never rooted anything before, does anyone know my options in this case to get TWRP for this phone? (Or another method of root I'm not aware of would also be fine.) Thanks!

Hey. I'm in the same boat. I need to add su binary but looks like the only way to do it is with TWRP. Have you succeeded? I keep trying to find a way to do it, so far no luck.
TWRP isn't needed at all to push ( suitable ) SU binary onto Android's filesystem: you achieve this by means of ADB, too

Sweet!!! How does it look like?
I just tried adb sideload <file.zip> while in recovery mode and i'm getting this
adb: sideload connection failed: closed
adb: trying pre-KitKat sideload method...
adb: pre-KitKat sideload connection failed: closed
When check adb devices its shows that device is unauthorized. But it's only unauthorized in recovery mode.
Actually looks like I have a problem with recovery mode. Instead I'm getting "No command" screen. It's not even getting into recovery
To perform a ADB Sideload - what is used to flash a Stock ROM - phone must get booted into Sideload mode at 1st
Code:
adb devices
adb reboot sideload
adb sideload <STOCK-ROM-ZIP>
adb reboot
Oh cool. Didn't know that I could reboot stratight to sideload and bypass initial recovery menu. Thank you!
As for my previous issue with "No command" error on recovery boot, I managed to resolve it. When It's gets to "No command" screen, you need to hold Power + Volume Down just long enough to tap Volume Up. And then recovery menu will appear. So Press Power + Volume Down and then tap Volume Up.
When I tried to sideload su binary with
Code:
adb sideload <file.zip>
On the mobile screen i'm getting this error
Code:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature. Update package verification took 0.5 s ( result 1)
E:Signature verification failed
E: error: 21
Looks like recovery not allowing to install unsigned packages. Is there a way around it? Do I need to source another su binary or there is a way to sign it?
Ok. I think I'm getting closer to the core issue. I thought that I rooted the device, but I only unlocked the bootloader. So device is not rooted. As per original thread topic, looks like there is still no TWRP yet and boot.img is not accessible to modify. Tried to get boot.img directly from the device, but getting - permission denied.
Any other walkarounds i should try?
SU binary isn't a signed package. It's a ~110KB file you have to push onto Android OS, preferred to /data/local/tmp directory and afterwards have to make it executable.
I've downloaded Chainfire SuperSu Zip packages, unpacked it and got a su file from arm64 folder. As you mentioned, su file is 108.5KB =)
I've pushed it to /data/local/tmp and made it executable
Code:
S22FLIP:/ $ ls -la /data/local/tmp
total 114
drwxrwxrwx 2 shell shell 3488 2022-12-22 09:36 .
drwxr-x--x 4 root root 3488 1970-01-01 12:15 ..
-rwxrwxrwx 1 shell shell 108496 2008-02-29 03:33 su
Maybe I'm missing something, I still get
Code:
S22FLIP:/ $ su
/system/bin/sh: su: inaccessible or not found
You must tell Android where the SU binary is located
Code:
cd /data/local/tmp & su
or
Code:
/data/local/tmp/su

IMO you can't root a phone ( a conglomerat of hardware pieces ) but only enable Android OS to run system commands as root ( will say with elevated rights if those are required ) by means of su.
Knowing this you would open a terminal window in Android and type out
Code:
<FULLPATH-TO-SU-BINARY-HERE>/su -c "<SHELL-COMMAND-THAT-REQUIRES-ELEVATED-RIGHTS-HERE>"
Example:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/su -c "mount -o remount,rw -t auto /system"

Click to collapse
Doesn't work. It looks like the su binary doesn't grant system commands root
I really don't know what to do......
