[Q] What do you think windows 8 consumer beta will look like? - General Questions and Answers

an ideas just reply?

Well, I got the developer preview a while ago. It looks almost exactly like Windows 7 mobile. (The live tiles, etc, etc, etc...) The only issue I had with it was that on a touch device it was epic, but on a KB/M interface it SUCKED. You had to use all these weird hotkeys to get anywhere useful and alot of the windows hotkeys that have been around forever just didn't work. Hopefully the consumer preview will be more KB/M friendly. Having been a geek since the early Windows 3.x days I found that in an attempt to make the new OS less frustrating for computer newbies, they made it more frustrating for us old-timers that are used to the traditional Windows GUI.
I do, however, like the new "Blue Screen Of Death".

You can cut it to a classic theme that works more like win7 if that's what you want... Also, that's windows phone 7.

It'll probably be like Vista ie ignored by business.
10-12 years time you'll probably have companies still trying to work out how to buy computers that can take W7, just as we have companies only buying specific PCs because there are XP drivers still available for them.

It is really
Windows 7 phone OS with a desktop app, it's slow, clunky, has tons of errors, and is only good for tablets(in my opinion) go to dev.windows.com and download and try it yourself

We already know what it'll look like.
Bloody awful!

No need to wonder - here's a screenshot.

no start menu so i'm wondering how much time it will take to get used to that...

The only issue I had with it was that on a touch device it was epic, but on a KB/M interface it SUCKED.

Ok, it looks REALLY great. If it's as fast as it looks, we may have a winner

What you should make a note of is the things that it improves upon from all the previous ui's of WM past. I'll wait for 8.
When is WM7 due? It's not until 2009 is it?
Detailed picture gallery here as well..
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/01/06/is-this-windows-mobile-7/
I've gone thru the entire gallery and if its truly able to deliver on what it can do.. Its pretty much gonna be good light years jump from what WinMo and all other platforms short of the iPhone and still good 5 years ahead of the iPhone itself...
They are really going big on movement based gestures and some of the concept is truly remarkable.. like if you see lets say, a name on the browser search. One can then tap and hold on it and start "shaking" the phone/device which tells the device to do a "smart search" where it'll "rain" down a bunch of animated icons that settle down to show the various things/files/pictures/activities related to that name existing in your phone etc... what a simple yet ingenious concept.
Although, I must say that this will open more questions than answers to why did MS have to make this Super-Quantum leap from WM6 and not have given us a good progression to it in the form of already having released such interface in WM5 onwards??!!?? After all, this kind of technology and its implementation could not have just been put together overnight within the last 6 or lets say 12 months subsequent to the announcement/release of the iPhone...
Good Ol' boy wizards Mr. Gates and Balmer holding back as usual I guess...
Oh well.. better late than never.

Will Windows Mobile 7 be available as an upgrade to already existing phones? I just recently bought my tilt and am wondering if I will be able to run this when it comes out? Thanks in advance.
For tilt maybe, but I don't think my old prophet can carry the weight... There was no WM6 update, so why should there be one for 7.
Depends on the Device.
ya i was really greatful at&t baked us a wm6 rom for hermes (8525), is 100% stable and runs awesome, but i still can't wait to try some wm7 fresh from the kitchen goodness!
wonder if the unit specs will ramp up much?

What is it? what can I do with it?

I bought a new phone/pda but can't identify what it is or what its running. it's model no is A858 and is IPTV compatable whatever that means. all the instruction are in Chinese. and there seems to be no way of messing with the software or adding progs as I don't know what it is running on, just says "Windows push technology" Help please.........
is this it? it doesnt run windows, it doenst look like...

network frequency is "900/1800MHZ" which means its GSM, which means you can use it with everyone pretty much except Verizon but they might not be able to activate it since its a foreign model, but i think you are out of luck here anyway since the developers on this site program for windows mobile (which it doesnt run)
p.s.- IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television...not sure what the heck that means in terms of your phone though
yes. It comes up with the windows logo & says "Windows push technology" in the startup screen, other than that I have no idea?
well, "push technolgoy", whether its windows or apple or whoever makes it...just means that your phone has the capability of constantly checking for email, messages, etc....it means that you can set it to check for email (if you have a data plan), ever 5, 10, or 15 minutes, etc...if you wish. data is constantly being 'pushed" to and from your phone, that's all it means, so it looks like you have a limited user interface, not windows by any stretch, but still microsoft based technology, while the base rom is probably made by some 3rd party subsidiary of the company that makes the phone.
so not supported by microsoft, but still usable.
Thank you for your prompt reply on this. It is a good phone but limited on it's PDA side, Music wise is excellent as it has an extremely loud MP3 player and plays videos downloaded from the net or from my own camera....It's just a bit annoying that the PDA section is worse than useless... but your help is appreciated

Porting linux drivers

I know its a sore topic but... how possible is it to port the display drivers from android to wince? My programming skills don't extend to driver development so im unsure as to what it would entail. I have seen many examples of linux drivers ported to win32 and they all seem to work fine, for example i use ext2ifs on a daily basis. I have even seen attempts that go the other way (eg. NTFS for linux). It can't be impossible. I seem to remember in a thread someone said that if they knew what registers were used to control the imageon then they could possibly create a driver. Im thinking that all of this information is somewhere in the linux kernel code - obviously its tailored for linux but the addresses and registers should surely be the same? I have been looking myself and there are a few interesting directories such as kernel/drivers/video/msm and arch/arm/mach-msm. Im currently trying to look through the code so i can put all the required .c and header files in one place. When its done, ill zip it and post it here.
Apologies if this has already been discussed but i couldn't find many responses (i did find someone asking the same question).
I also posted on another thread that i have been in touch with a company that holds some technical documentation for various Qualcomm chips. I am currently waiting to see if it is worth pursuing as it will cost me money and i would like to know that its gonna be useful before shelling out any cash.
The thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=357885
Ill just fetch the flame suit...

Windows 6.5 Picture Gallery
Summary of points noted:
* Most likely to start appearing in Q4 of this year
* New lock screen, The idea behind the lock screen is that there's a notification box for each type of notification -- email, text messages, voicemails, and so on -- and dragging the appropriate notification with your finger will take you straight to it when the phone unlocks.
* New home screen - Left and right swipes move between calendar events, for example. (pictured above)
* Still uses the X to quit apps etc
* New honeycomb menu/homescreen...scrolling fairly smooth
* New version of IE mobile, scrolls, renders pages better
* New virtual keyboard
* My Phone..syncing over the air
Personal opinion: Looks like the same old Windows Mobile youve come to love and hate. They added a today screen plugin and a new menu system and a cloud program woop de doo. Oh and they updated their SIP...first time in 5 years. Looks like HTC once again has to fill its shortcomings...
I really like the new unlock screen.

Engadget walkthrough.
Someone should get his hands on that 6.5 build
Excellent job Microsoft.
Mmm... not sure about that...
A step in the right direction.
But it is nowhere near enough!!
I was really hoping for some Zune goodness here
Looking nice but not so much as expected.
Sure, it's not brilliant but it's only a stop gap until WM7 comes out. MS obviously needed to do something before next year and I'm sure it was at the request of the phone manufacturers.
I'm also sure that this will be another fantastically tweakable and skinnable OS. Love it or hate it you can't argue that WM is very customisable.
Agree, hopefully WM7 will be something really worth waiting for.
another crap

Windows phone 8 Can not be a lot of features that make all people spend a lot of money to upgrade to new devices and about 20% of the windows phone users do not need to spend a lot of money
Why Microsoft Stopped Skype Services for windows phone 7.8 !! >>> Skype Paid services
I agree, 8 does not offer enough for the money over 7.8 for me to want to upgrade my perfectly working Radar. Well, perfectly until recently when Maps suddenly stopped being able to find any business or POI...
As of september it can't find any business or POI (starbucks, gas station, library, etc.), only cities and street names. I ditched the stock ROM and flashed deepshining WP7.8 so I can use the Nokia Here Maps and Drive.
What's really gets me though is I noticed the business search still works after a factory reset, but only until a few mins in when the phone finishes configuring itself. That is with the sim in, and If i leave the sim out while it configures and put it in afterwards it works for a few hours before it suddenly stops. This means the service is there and perfectly useable by the old app. It's like it must be some configuration finally completing and changing some setting to disable it. This really ticks Me off.
I'm going to try to pull a reg backup right after reset while it's still working and compare it to one from after it dies, not sure where and which hive to start looking in though, so if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated.
Nevermind They also broke the search button: http://wmpoweruser.com/did-microsoft-break-the-windows-phone-7-8-bing-search-feature/
P.S. I called T-Mobile TS about the issue and they've had other reports, so I'm not the only one. They tried to three-way call HTC about it to ask some qs, but ended up just sending me to them by mistake, anyway HTC pointed the finger at MS and gave Me their number. Good luck with that eh.
UPDATE - FIX FOUND!: http://forum.xda-developers.com/win...-business-poi-search-disabled-ms-fix-t3229083
in short, it's a business... :silly:
but wait, the Windows Phone 8.1 support will ends on Jul 11, 2017
p.s.: to tell the true, it's just too sad to see how the great idea is buried alive...
