can you plug an external hdd into the asus transformer or asus transformer prime keyboard dock and use it as extra storage.
Yes
I have used both a 300gb NTFS external hard drive and a 4gb FAT32 flash drive. Both work perfectly.

yes I have a terabyte drive on mine.
But please don't post questions in the general section in the future

Yes,
I started using my 2T drive a few month ago.
Anybody benchmarked speed compared to a fast MicroSD card, out of curiosity?

But how is done? I have no clue
You simply plug the device in to one of the keyboard dock's two USB ports. Then a notification should appear in the notification area telling you that the volume mounted successfully. Select the notification and press the icon that looks like a folder.
Or, attach your device then open the File Manager application and navigate to /removable/. Your storage device should be shown here.

Why is it so slow to transfer files to Transformer? It takes a minute to transfer a 700mb video file. Is it like that in your device too?
Depending how you are sending them, you have the limitation of either wifi or USB 2.0 unless you have USB 3.0 ports on your machine
A minute is fine for 700mb
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Yes, a minute is good enough... Try sending a 700MB file over LAN. It'll take a lot longer than a minute to complete.
I connected it to the usb 3.0 port in my computer and the transfer speed is still the same. I'm not complaining or anything. I'm just curious why the transfer speed in my phone is so much faster than the transformer.

Are you tranferring direcly to the Transformers internal SD or to a removable SD? If removable then it is the class of your SD card.

very slow with me also. 400mb took 30 minutes!!!
No drivers;. Just plug in => explorer => drag (internal storage)

I have one of those cheapo China USB adapters.
It works fine recognizing my storage when i hook up a pendrive but now i tried it with an external 2,5mm HDD and it didn't get recognized. im guessing the tab doesn't provide the HDD with enough power for it to run.
here my question: is it just my cheapo china usb adapter? does someone have the official samsung one and could try it out and see if external drive (without power chords) are supported?
would be awesome!
No, it won't work, there's simply not enough amps to power that.
I suggest getting a powered USB hub then making a battery pack for it (I'll get around to taking a picture of mine - I use it with my N900 and 8.9 with USB HDDs, DVD drives and USB data cards.)
yeah i imagined sth like that.
i have a usb hub but i was hoping to just use the drive by itself.
would be interesting to see your battery pack hack! please post some pictures!
Looking forward to seeing this battery pack
I have tried it a couple of times but the battery pack i made did not last very long
Why would you need a hub? Most come with a dual USB cable. Plug the main one into the tab adapter and the other one into a battery pack with USB. Should be a touch less cumbersome and you don't need to build anything, unless you really want to.

yes, as long as you can power the drive separately.

The drive must also be formated with FAT32. The GT Tab won't read NTFS.

Unless you install CM9 which supports NTFS (read-only) on the 8.9 tab.

uTorrent has been released for Android (beta). Unfortunately, at least for me, ANY torrent app completely lags the tablet to the point where I consider it unusable. I don't have an sd card. Has anyone tried any torrent app and downloaded files on to an external sd card? I want to know if it lags like that as well?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T
i use Adownloader, and it is capable of downloading to the memory card. While downloading 4 files at one time, i was able to do other things on the tablet without issues.
try ttorrent. Also, when you want to search within the app you will need to dl a plugin, but I've never had problems. It doesn't do a great job of correcting spelling, etc. but more or less solid all around.

What speeds were you getting? My tablet was already unusable when I was downloading at my max speed (6mbit/s). However, when I'm transfering files between my laptop and my tablet (at 20mbit/s) the tablet is not unusable, but not fast either... Is this all because of the IO issues?
Yep, just got the same problem with torrent and internal storage, it's the same with ttorrent btw.

You should try using aTorrent - i have downloaded stuff onto the tablet without any problems + it's free.
My formula: aTorrent + isohunt.com = works
I haven't downloaded several files at the same time but it worked fine with one file downloading + using a couple of other apps.
I've used every torrent app out there, and they all lag my device when I'm downloading.... Are you downloading to an external sd card?

I'm using ttorrent to microSD card and it works great. Before I was using the internal storage but it was making the tablet unusable. I bought the microSD card just for that.

Alright I am convinced to buy a microSD card just for this reason. Kind of stupid I have to do this, the IO problems really shouldn't be there, but alas. Thanks... Now if only someone could tell me if my Samsung Captivate supported 64gb cards...
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T
The new version of atorrent allows downloading to the card. And I did not experience any lag.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
Every torrent application will lag your phone/table it you're downloading to your primary SD Card. This is becase Androids needs to preallocate the full size of the downloaded files. So when Android zero filles 2Gb of files, then the read/write speed for other applications on the internal storage will drop, thus you'll get a lot of lag. Once the preallocation is over the phone comes back to live again (that is if you're not downloading with +10Mb/s speed of more).
Only way to avoid the lag is to have an external SD Card and download to it. BTW you can try my new torrent application TDM. Maybe it'll suit your needs better? (it has no problems with downloading to extarnal cards and it has a file manager to allowes you to manage the file on multiple cards with ease).
Is there any way of mounting Tab 2 as an external drive rather than mobile player?
Thanks!
Ummm, when connected to pc under my computer does your tab not show up as an extra drive? Mine does.

Again, it shows up as a media player. No drive letter is assigned.

Sorry I may misunderstand what ur question is, but when plugged into pc, tab shows up as GT P5110 Portable media player (under My Computer) , but once you double click on it it then shows the 2 storage drives one being internal sd and the other the external sd, but without drive letters. but in reality it is 2 separate drives.. hope I'm on the right track.

That's different. What he wants (probably) is to mount as an actual drive similar to a Mac in Target Disk Mode through Firewire.
As far as I know that's impossible. It would make flashing roms and backing up much easier.

Yup, just what the below poster said. I can mount my Galaxy Note and have two drives in Windows. To bad there's no way of mounting like that with this pad. Thanks for your response though.
I install the usb connector and insert a usb memory and copy some files, everything works fine. Until the next time I want to do it. Then the connector is recognized but the usb memory is not. Inserting it revokes no response from the system. I'm forced to reboot in order to see the memory stick again. I always tap the memory stick reminder in the notification bar before removing it. Does anyone else encounter the same problem?

I don't generally have an issue but I'm not rooted.
Is it formatted as fat32 or exfat?
There was an app in a post just like this one that someone recommended to help with this issue.
Issue noted in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033084&highlight=usb+memory
.
I'm not rooted, stock all the way. I'll have to check the USB stuck since I'm not sure what the formatting is, but I believe I formatted it on my Win 7 laptop and that may default to exfat.
Sent from my GT-P3113 using Tapatalk HD
Nope, a lot actually default to NTFS...
Did you just rip it out of the note or stop the usb drive from inside settings>storage usb drive>unmount? This may make a difference...
I unmounted it, but from the notification bar, the system responded by saying that the stick was safely removed. Could it be the OTG adapter? I use the one I got with my GT-P3113 but they are both Samsung tablets and it is recognized when inserted.
Should mention that I use the usbstock in my Transformer without any problems so I doubt that it is the formatting.

OTG host cable support for input devices on Jelly Bean is spotty. As was noted in the Google Code forums in January, Google has now modified it's Nexus specs page to drop references to OTG, BT support now is the only method mentioned for attaching devices. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=41206
