Might be more of a google market question, but thought I would start here.
I have 1 MT4GS with 90 or so apps, getting a second MT4GS. Most apps are market, but some from other spots. Is there a way to massively update/download the apps I have on current phone to new phone. In the past, I have just downloaded them one at a time from market.
Thanks in advance...
Possibly
Just an idea, you could make a backup of your current mt4gs and then restore it on the new one? Ive never tried it but I dont see why it wouldnt work
Your google account should keep record of your downloaded apps and redownload on the next device you sign in on... Usually...

Backup to the SD card OR some other form, like using a backup/restart App?

I know with previous phones this didn't work. I would connect to my same account with the new phone, but it wouldn't show that I had apps loaded. Example, the eBay app would not show installed, I would have to load like it was a new app install. It would be great if that would do that, or it would show 90 updates to be applied. But I haven't done this in a while, maybe newand improved market will allow. I guess I will find out when I get receive the 2nd phone.
Thanks..
Well if your rooted and your next phone is rooted then you can use titanium backup to backup all your apps. If you CWM installed on both then you can make a nandroid backup and either restore it on the new one or use appextractor to restore the apps. But if your not then your best bet is let Google restore the apps that it does and manually resinstall the ones that it doesn't.
all of your payed for apps will certainly appear in the market under my apps and you can just go thru clicking on them one after another after another. the ones that were free though, i dont know any quick/easy way. i'm sure theres an app that will track all your downloaded apps regardless of if they were free or not.
The market website actually keeps a log of every app you downloaded. You can then send them right to your phone from there.

This is what I'm seeing, it show my paid for apps, but not the freebees. FYI - first phone is not rooted, second one is..
I also logged into google and google market on the pc hoping to see 'my apps', but no luck there..
So looks like a download at a time..
Thanks all for your inputs...
That is odd. I still have stuff on the Web Based Market list that I haven't used since my old craptastic Behold II 2 years ago.

I've done this before with my old MT4G. I would just flash a backup of my previous phone onto my warranty replacements... So I can say it does work....
roms make a difference
I have been trying out different roms and they act different with Market.
These 2 work like I mentioend before, only show bought apps:
Bulletproof
Doubleshot Lite 1.2.4
But this one does an auto download of all my past downloaded apps, very cool.
RootzWiki and install Undeadk9's ICS-splashed ROM: RubiX_ICS_v5.3_release-keys_signed

Google JUST released it a few minutes ago, it's in the market now, update your Maps.
To go 3D mode, use two fingers and swipe down. It'll "tilt" the map. If you're in an area that has the 3D vector maps, you'll see it (try San Francisco).
You can also then use two fingers and rotate the map.
Old Market
Shouldn't the Nexus S use the new market? Mine displays the old market...

Agreed. 2.3 shoulda come with the new market. I tried to install the .apk but I can't for some reason as I don't have the option. I also noticed that in 2.3 with the old market, Downloads (third tab) has been replaced with T-Mobile's picks. Yuck.

They should've put the new market... I dislike the new t-mobile tab in the market.

Yeah, seeing the T-Mobile tab makes the phone feel gimped. How can I install the newer .apk I have or can't I? (locked to 2.2 only?)

Then it must be a uniform standard, maybe for Sprint users it'll change to Sprint & for AT&T users it'll change to AT&T..
Luckily for me I've been using the phone since morning and it's on downloads only.

Mine says t-mobile as well.
I had AT&T SIM in when I got my phone, and it said Downloads and had WIFI Tether (root app) available for download.
After I signed up for T-Mobile and used that SIM, the tab turned into T-Mobile, and no WIFI Tether in the market (there's another thread listing some apps missing from T-Mobile market)
It's all very odd. Ever since I had my N1, the third tab was ALWAYS Downloads. Then, I manually upgraded to the new Market. (2.2.6) When going to Market on the Nexus S, the third tab is T-Mobile. I really hope when switching to the newer Market that it goes away.

Yeah, I noticed that there were some apps missing from the Market as well, but this may be because of the transition from 2.2 to 2.3. Back in the day when we were moving from 2.1 to 2.2 there was a whole to-do about some apps not showing in the market and it had to do with developers not checking some options/settings to do with security or something in their app(s).
I suppose it's the price we pay for being on the bleeding edge. I did notice that apps that were sitting on my SD card on my Nexus One were not transferred over and I'll need to redownload them.
OT: How would I got about transferring settings, save games, etc. onto my Nexus S? This is the one thing that irks me about resetting a phone/moving to a new phone. Apps are transferred but settings/saves are not.

That's lame. I hope Google continues to make phones with a fixed amount of storage so that they can backup everything to the cloud. Due to them knowing what's on the phone, they can then restore the apps and saves for us.
i tried installing the new market apk that i used for my n1. it installed, but some of the text was cut off and kept forceclosing. im also not liking the tmobile branded market.

Just wanted to know if i just got lucky, or if this happends to everyone....I actually am pleased because i missed the applanet feature. I was going to push a program when i noticed i still had it.....

you didnt happen to go back to the stock rom that now includes side loading through a new update did you?
If you went back to stock but kept your data partition intact, then the setting will stick. Did you wipe data?
yes i did a full data and cache wipe.
Guys don't get me wrong, i would LOVE to stay rooted..............for many reasons....but i just have had the worse luck in the world with my GPS not working on any platform i have tired (i.e. CM7, TPC, and anotherone i forgot the name)....
I don't blame you for never wanting to go stock.....it sucks....but hey, at least my GPS works and now i can at least use applanet

GPS works on GingerBeast just fine. It's weird tho... If you open navigation...it will continue to say "waiting for location" ...Disregard this...go ahead and load the address..Connects within seconds.
My problem has to do with the GPS going on and off, on and off.....
GPS Status would show like 7 sattelites but still wouldn't "LOCK"...which is totally weird....
With my STOCK ROM, it connects within 4 seconds....
I have my "GOLDEN PARACHUTE" in being able to go back to STOCK so if anyone has any other ROM they want me to try which will be either "CLOSE" to stock or will work find with the GPS, then let me know and i will re-root again.
Actually AT&T updated the inspire today to allow for side loading.

You do realize by using applanet you are stealing money from the devs that put hard work and effort into making apps. I just want to make sure that you know pirating apps is not a good thing.

I'd sure like to know how they pulled this off. It is a bit disturbing to think they could make a change of this type in the system without us knowing that it even happened.
Just shows you what kind of pull Amazon has. They likely turned it on so that you can use the Amazon App store.
Interesting thing is that I have a device going back for exchange and 1 of the questions they asked me is "Have you downloaded any software/apps to your phone?" I said "Sure, what is the point of having a smart phone without apps" They then asked "Where did you download the apps from?" and I responded "The Android Market powered by Google of course. Why is there anywhere else to get apps I thought that was the only place." He then said, "It is, I was just checking" Of course that was a week ago, so things seem to have changed.

Works fine here. The only problem I had with the previous versions was that the Market would switch between my Google accounts at it's own volition and make it look like I didn't have any apps installed or available to update. The trick with that was just to change the market app to the correct account. That issue seems to be gone (helps that it tells you which account you're using right in your face this time).
I like it, I hope it stops telling me to update things I've already updated...

What has changed is internal.
1. No longer has the bug of changing accounts when click on updates in the notification bar.
2. Can set all apps to auto-update and set it to auto-update only over wifi. This is the best change they have made so far. I have had times when the market went crazy and ate up all my data, costing me extra money.
3. Some other changes in settings.
Have used it today and it's not as laggy as the previous version over 2g mobile data. It's also not as quick as 2.2. Will use it for a few days and see how it acts. Or switch to 2.2 again.
To make a long story short, my first skyrocket's sleep/wake button broke and so I called AT&T and it was still under warranty. They sent me a replacement skyrocket and now I'm just trying to restore my play store apps on the new skyrocket as I had my first skyrocket back up all my apps to my Google Account.
The problem is that on the Play Store, my first and second skyrocket are showing up as completely different devices:
Samsung SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 (first skyrocket)
AT&T Samsung SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 (replacement skyrocket)
My first skyrocket did have a custom ROM on it when the button broke and the replacement skyrocket is still on stock, so is that the reason why the Play Store recognizes them as separate devices?
Will I have to install a custom ROM on the replacement skyrocket for them to be recognized as the same device again?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes, I'm logging on the same Google account. The last time I restored my apps from Play Store, as soon as I logged into my Google account on my skyrocket, the download list was automatically populated with apps that were previously installed on my phone.
I'm wondering why it won't do the same now?

It won't be recognized as the same device because it isn't . You can go in your Google account and hide your old one so it won't come up as an option though.
Also you can see a history of installed apps, just use that from a pc and start installing away.

I appreciate all of your input. Thanks a bunch. If I still can't get my apps to restore I'll manually do it.
But I wonder if this is because my first skyrocket was on superlite cm10 jb when it broke and now this skyrocket is on stock ics. Any possibility that flashing the new skyrocket to that same custom ROM (which I plan to do later) make it recognize it as the same device and allow me to restore? Just throwing this possibility out there.

if you are not rooted then install this app from playstore
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idea.backup.smscontacts&hl=en
this app is great for backing up the call logs, calender, contacts.
if your are rooted and on custom recovery then you can go for titanium backup and create a zip.:good:
Also do note, if your phone is synced to Google, you can get all your contacts and apps (without settings) on your new device just by linking your new phone.
For app settings and SMS, you should probably do what @sachoosaini recommends.
App settings are not at all savable if you are not rooted. Well titaniuim backup is the medicine of your questions. And I the universe if the XDA known that on gmail you can restore your backup. But there are many people who are privacy conscious. they don't install Google apps. And rely on other markets ..

Yeah, the phone is rooted, and the new one will be as soon as I get it (or at least, that's the plan). My main concern was basically whether the LifeHacker article was still valid (it's three years old, which is forever with these things) and whether it would work when switching between two completely different handsets, rather than switching from my current One XL to a different One XL in the case of a lost or damaged phone, for example. They're still both HTC, and thus will both run Sense, which should avoid the biggest potential issue, but I want to make sure I've got everything sorted now, rather than trying it and having it not work.
