firmware updates - Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus

My tablet has never gotten an ota update. It always says it is up to date.
I have to update through kies.
Is this normal?

I got my first update OTA, but had to use kies for the second one. it seems as if it hit or miss situation.

All of mine have come through as OTA (knock on wood).

Have you set up a Samsung account? You need to do this in order to get OTA updates for your tab.

You don't need a Samsung account for ota's. I got an ota 2 minutes into ownership fresh out of the box back in December. Ironically, I set up a Samsung account 2 weeks ago and had to use kies for the latest update.

Yeah, some of the updates are pushed to all tablets, but according to Samsung you won't receive some notifications that new software is available on the device, and you might miss bugfix/maintenance updates unless you register.
Pulled from the Samsung Website here:
"How to Check for Software Updates
To receive notifications regarding software updates, you'll need to set up a Samsung account on your device. This will allow us to notify you of an update on your device when an update is available."
The thing is, Samsung acknowledges and embraces the fact that it has two separate upgrade paths, so it can get very confusing as to which method works and what you need to have/do in order to receive updates.

Samsung just wants you to register, they want to know who's buying what. Their update paths are confusing and bordering on ridiculous. Choose a simple path and establish consistency. JMO.

YES ^THIS. I wholeheartedly agree. A simpler, ubiquitous upgrade system would be more efficient and would improve the overall user experience, but there we go expecting logic again.

I have always had a samsung account on the device
I never get ota updates

I am not sure, but I think opening an account also activates samsung dive.
So they know in every moment where their dear product is. hehe

I check my sprint edge every day multiple times, hasn't reached my phone yet.
You should be able to tell if its a system update or not by the size. Or it could be a simple prl or profile update.
But rumors are the lollipop update will be rolling out soon.
PRL is up to date, it wont let me see the size. Get a popup that says "the operating system on your device is modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using samsung kies on your pc".

Sounds like it could be the lollipop update. I'm updating the Samsung kies app on my PC to check it.

Idk..... According to kies NK1 (4.4.4 kit Kat) is the latest firmware and no updates available. Could be your phone tried to update its profile, who knows.

Its the lollipop update. You won't get it because you're rooted like me. The only way to get it would be reinstall stock ROM then update. If you froze an app or disabled it will even flick you out of install due to a verification process it streams through by scanning apps. If your missing one it won't work. Had the same problem on my ATT Galaxy Mega.
You will not get the update anytime soon via Kies. You have better luck checking Samsung once in a while for the tar file. The update right now is an OTA. Only way to get it would be to catch someone who has a UNrooted/messed with device that can download it then before you left it update plug it into the computer and extract the CFG file that was downloaded.

Its possible he did. Sprint Note 4 is official but Note Edge OTA is being pushed to limited devices in certain markets as a standard "testing phase" to ensure issues are solved. Once done it will be pushed to all devices. You can contact Sprint and request the OTA file be pushed to your phone but this depends on the idiot you get but it can be done and they will if they feel up to it. I had a link but I lost it...previous post was my mistake. Sprint is the first carrier to push the update.
SamMobile gets their files from Samsung anyway so until Samsung releases the full tar file they won't have it...not even from the OTA file (not possible to create a flashable ROM with this file) On top of that Samsung most likely won't release the tar file for atleast 6 months.
Is there any reason in particular you would want lollipop out of curiosity?

Me personally, I'm looking for improvements on battery and speed and signal with the new modem. My phone drops calls inside my house, great CDMA signal but LTE is weak inside my house.
Some apps have some horrible lag right now for me. Like the camera app when you tap the picture to go to the gallery it takes for ever.

Obviously then you have no idea what your talking about with your smart remark. Just because its "new" doesn't mean its the "latest & greatest" and in no way is that an intelligent response. KitKat update from JB was a piece of junk and a joke for most devices and most people who got that update wished they never did and on top of that once you have KitKat there's no going back on some devices.

Now this is exactly the response I was looking for. An intelligent conversation.
Unfortunately this update ignored the reception issues I can tell you that for a fact which is a joke since the db to signal display ratio is incorrect on this device it shows 1 bar a good portion of the time when in retrospect it should display up to 1-2 bars more...this issue wasn't even fixed....I know its just a visual but still annoying. Battery life is improved, UI interface for notifications is changed, the lag is fixed as well. Mostly UI changes unfortunately.

Good to hear. The one thing I know I'm going to hate is the placement of the capture button in the camera, it feels great to have it on the Edge display.

Don't take it personal. It was meant to in some way be funny. I know the newest isn't always the best. That's why I included the parenthesis around latest and greatest. I have no one reason why I want it. Only reason I want it is because I don't have it really.
Edit: of course I'm looking for the usual improvements

....u got me....jokes on me. Haha its hard to tell sometimes especially when emoticons aren't used. I apologize.....personally I won't be taking the OTA on my personal device. Probably just wait for tar file to be released and build my ROM again. The reception bar display annoys the crap out of me...my note 4 shows 1 bar (5.0 lollipop)... My note edge now displays 3 bars as it should(modified ROM to fix display of db to signal display), just like my Tab 4 now. Honestly that dumb visual about kept me from getting either device originally thinking they just have bad/crappy antenna placement.
I was rooted when I got my phone. I went back totally stock because of the reception issues I was having and never got around to rooting again. I have been checking for the update daily in my settings. I was hoping that the radio firmware would be updated to improve the data connectivity but looks like it wasn't. That was one of the big reasons I was looking foward to it. The battery life isn't a big concern to me even though it isn't the best I have used I do think the quick charge is nice when I get to a charger and am only 25% full

Highly Doubt its M...if it is, that would be an unheard of fast for ATT...I believe its just an update to fix the Stagefright bug
OK, its almost done. Optimizing apps.....
the build number is lmy47d, the software version is h81010o
Maybe it fixed touch issues? it feels better, but it may be placebo, only time will tell
Also slow motion is missing from the camera for some reason. not okay
For me, the touch issues went away on the last update before the stagefright update.
However while optimizing , my G4 got extremely warm. Never had it this hot since initial setup.

I just installed the update and I still have Slo-mo on my camera. Maybe your update only partially applied? I can't seem to find any release notes on this update yet. I saw some things about an update for battery improvements for overseas models in an update that came out about a week ago.
Optimizing apps....will post up if i find anything new & exciting.
Just a thought....could this update be the one that enables wifi calling? iPhones on iOS 9 just got it a few hours ago...
Slowmo still sucks terribly and I was pissed when i ordered the G4 at launch for the manual camera control and then it turned out it was only in stills not video mode. Then they say manual video is in V10. Funny as they keep posting V10 manual mode video examples on FB and they are all terrible. If it wasnt for removeable battery and SD card I'd be back on Iphone because it absolutely is now destroying all Android phones, the Slomo quality is amazing. Although I would also miss the video record/pause feature a lot. Still pissed everytime I open gallery and see tons of crap albums that I could hide on the G3 but cant on the G4, what a fing mess. LG G4 on Lollipop has so many bugs, omissions and nonsensical features that it is beyond irritating to have to pray for OEM updates for corrections. I have never stared at a phone before in total hate like I have this AT&T POS. The Google play services update strategy is still total crap. Memory leaks and bugs still abound. Until this OEM release crap ends Android will always be a buggy 2nd class OS.

To hide albums just put a .nomedia file in the album. If you haven't used QuikPic app you should try it, you can choose to hide albums with the app as well.

LG-V10 updates
I just purchased the LG-V10 phone yesterday and right out of the box had issues with the volume control on music, video, games & other media. It was locked and would not let me adjust the volume up or down. I took my phone back in to the T-Mobile retail store for an analysis of what was causing this problem. It was a simple update that had rolled out after the distribution of this phone. Best place to check for updates is under settings.....general....about phone....update center. There you can check for all app and software updates provided by LG Electronics. My phone is working fine now.

There has not been a system update for this phone since its release and the only firmware version available so far is H901-10c, build LMY47V, unless the update literally came out last night and has not yet propagated.
Your volume button problem was likely a software issue which was resolved when the rep did a factory reset on the phone, or a hardware issue, such as the contacts for the button flex not properly mating with the motherboard pegs, which can be resolved by pressing the back of the phone in a specific spot.
This thread title got me so excited for no reason. Someone should change it lol.

Does Samsung know they sold Gear S2's in the USA?

Maybe they have not yet updated the SM-R732's (non-3g) in the U.S. because they are simply a huge bureaucratic global corporation where one part doesn't know what the other parts are doing. But the U.S. is also one of the few markets that have been offering the 3G versions at all, so it could be that they need (or want) to roll out specific updates for the S2s tied to carriers (Verizon, AT&T, etc.) that fix issues peculiar to the 3G versions (e.g., battery life) before they roll out the update for the non-3Gs.
Another possibility is that they're about to release the Samsung Pay update that enables the NFC capabilities, and so those of us in the U.S. will leapfrog the modest update that people started getting back in November. One can hope.

I have the Gear S2, you know, the one that came out BEFORE your T-Mobile 3G. Nice of Samsung to update the carrier models and completely ignore the early adopters that didn't want 3G.

One things for sure - Samsung is ignoring their S2 customer base in the US. No update, no discussion, no acknowledgement at all. I will reconsider my next Samsun purchase if this is their customer service standard.

I got the weather update to work by using the stock weather on my Note 4. Now it updates as it should. If you don't have a Samsung phone or if you've rooted I don't know if it'll work. I had to delete all the other weather apps though and I liked Transparent Weather. But if I'm using the Gear to get weather then I don't really need my phone that much.
I wonder if it is possible to "hide" a phone behind European proxy and try to update watch? Maybe sim card needs to be removed in case phone checking for location even with wifi on.

Well, back to not updating. How weird is that? Gotta get this fixed, Samsung. Assuming, of course, there actually IS an update out there. Somewhere. Maybe.
Just got all excited! Had an update for my S2 and did the install. Nope. Still the same old AOJ system on the watch. I"m hatin' me some Samsung right now. Anyone else get that today? Any idea what it is??
AND I lost all but 2 of my watch faces even though I backed them up. This sort of poor coordination and customer support is unacceptable.

It is an update to the app itself (Gear Manager, Plugin) and not the software update. This is what we've been getting since the devices launched.

I figured. I got one a couple months ago too. Any idea what it does? Besides delete my existing stuff?

It just shows you the battery left on your S2 in the app. It is present under software update menu.

One things for sure - Samsung is ignoring their S2 customer base in the US.

You're in for a rude awakening if you think the Gear S2 is going to receive regular or frequent updates in the U.S. or anywhere else. The Gear S on AT&T never received an update the rest of the world received months earlier and only got one stability update from its original launch s/w.
Samsung typically gets their watches stable and leaves them there moving on to the next watch for any additional features. All Gear S2's will probably receive two or three updates then die there. Carrier versions may get fewer depending on each carrier's mood. We'll get Samsung Pay and that might require an OS update on the watch but if history repeats itself that'll be it. The Gear S3 will be out a year-ish after the S2 and will have features and enhancements that won't be passed down. That's just the way it is.
P.S. - I knew this coming from two previous Gear's and bought it anyway.

No doubt. Luckily I like the watch, even with one or two things off. What I don't like is being ignored so when I do buy again I'll probably go Moto and HTC.

Well - the rest of the world has received TWO UPDATES to their S2 and the Carriers have at least received one update since I got mine in December. I don't necessarily expect frequent updates, but when the rest of the world gets 2 updates and I've YET to receive 1 of them, it gets EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. Between this and almost NO APPS, can't say I'll think about the S3!!

You must not have done a lot of research. You buy a Gear for its advanced capabilities when paired with a late model Samsung phone. Third party apps have always been thin and that'll most likely continue. The core apps are strong. All smartwatches, especially those that need to be tethered, are a solution looking for a problem. At least the S2 is comfortable and stylish at doing what it does.

Most recent update

How do I get the most recent update? My Gear Manager shows I'm up to date but I haven't updated in a while.
Not sure I have the same issue
I am having the same issue. What version of Gear Plugin and Samsung Gear app are you using. I am using 2.2.16070451 for the Samsung Gear app. And 2.2.03.16071152 for the Gear Plugin.
That's the same version I have this is weird

I am seeing so many articles talking about the update and download and I don't even have the update keeps saying I currently up to date
Has anyone for this update yet?
I have the same problem. My Gear s2 is the "regular" version (not a carrier version and not the classic). Also using 2.2.16070451 Gear app. & 2.2.03.16071152 Gear Plugin.
I'm not for sure that anyone has this update

I'm not sure because there isn't a single video about the update no one talking about the update if they have its a very few that have it for some reason
whats weird is i received an update the day that i saw an a article saying a big update is being rolled out. but i have the same version as the above, so who knows what update i received. or what it does. maybe its an update to prepare for the big update, to make sure our phones and watches will be able to take it with minimal issues. just guessing,

The only update I got was the watch app update. Not the actual watch update though. Maybe that's the problem? Maybe it see's the app updated and thinks the watch is updated as well?
It's crazy because I haven't seen a video on YouTube about the update I got the Samsung pay update which updated the gear app but have not received an update for the watch itself
Called Samsung and they said I should definitely have had the update from the 15th and did verify that my phone still has the old firmware. They could not help me over the phone and told me to take it to a Samsung shop at Best Buy. I will do that today and see what happens.

Haha, that's not gonna result in anything. Just have to be patient, like any update, they roll them out in stages over time.

Yep went to the Samsung shop and they are complete and utter morons. Totally incompetent. All they did was make it so I had to reinstall all my watch-faces and the phone app now gives me an error when I try to re-order apps and crashes. She couldn't even understand what I was talking about regarding a firmware update for the watch. No matter what way I tried to explain it over and over. Such a difference between Apple support and Samsung so called "support". What a joke. Now I am worse off from when I started. No update and and the app now crashes. Great, Looks like I'll be trading this in for a Android Wear watch when the new ones come out.
Finally got the update! Samsung support still sucks though. Hope this fixes the broken app issue that they broke.
Got mine today
Got my official update last week and it bricked my watch. Now in boot loop and under recovery menu factory reset is missing, only download, which as far as i can tell is totally useless and shut down. So have to take it to the 4th Samsung shop, the ones i have been at are of no help.
So nice, thank you for the OFFICIAL wonderful update, be careful, it could turn your watch into a bracelet.
Yeah I now have no faith in their support. The app is still broken and Samsung doesn't seem to give a damn let alone be able to fix it. I hope my S7 Edge has no problems until I pay it off. If a company cannot provide support or is unwilling to do so, there is no reason to purchase their products, plain and simple. Not getting the Gear S3 when it comes out which I was going to do, not getting the Tab S3 when that comes out which I was also going to do. I'll go with an Android Wear 2.0 watch when they start hitting stores and keeping my Ipad Air 2.
