[Q] Help Nexus S Totally Bricked! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please help if you can, would really appreciate, dont know how to unbick my totally F$$$$### Nexus S Phone.
Even in recovery/fastboot mode on my Nexus S (Vol up+power), I cannot get my system to recognize the device....in fact, even in Windows, I am not able to get the system to recognize my device in Recovery mode/Fastboot mode....the only way it will recognize the device is if it is turned on the normal way, and hangs on the "Google unlocked icon" screen.
Some background info:
My power button recently stopped working...I thought it had to do with the fact that I updated NexusTools (was running a CyberGR rom...cant remember the name...had V4 Ultimate in it (downloaded from Rom Manager)).
So what I did was download/install (from the same developer) their hybrid ics rom....that did not brick it...but it also did not fix the power button...so after not liking the new rom, and the fact that it didnt fix my power button, I reflashed to the original rom I had installed (wiped everything, including doing a factory reset), and it just hung on "Google unlocked icon"
Now my phone does the following:
- First of all, the only way to power the device up is to plug it in (it automatically turns on and tries to boot without me pressing the non-functional power button)
- If I let it try to boot, it infinity hangs on the Google unlocked icon screen
- If I boot into recovery (by holding vol up button and plugging the phone into a power source), it hangs on the recovery screen...meaning the power button, as well as the volume buttons, as well as any buttons are non responsive.
- If I boot into recovery, the device doesnt even register on my system....
What am I doing wrong? What can I do to try and fix this?
I would truly appreciate if anyone reading this has some insights for me.
THANKS!!

yes, sounds like a dead power button(i have one myself).
try going back into your recovery, do a full data wipe(factory reset), then reflash the rom(and gapps). if still nothing, redownload the rom and try again. in your recovery, there is an usb option. use it to transfer your newly downloaded rom from your computer to phone.

Once I am in recovery mode it "freezes" though...as in not even the volume buttons work...they worked fine before, and even work to get into recovery mode...but once there they no longer work...nor does connecting the device in recovery mode to my laptop....so im kind of at a loss, as I cant even use Fastboot/adb to wipe/push anything on the Nexus S through my laptop

im guessing that your using cwm recovery?
give your phone a few smacks on the back near the power button, your phone thinks its being pressed in.

yes, it definitely thinks it is being pressed in...thats for sure...and makes sense...ill try that haha!
Yes latest CWM Recovery...5.0.2 or something like that...just updated that before phone died...

Weird...so i "smacked" the phone a bit...when I do it in recovery mode, it reboots the phone into recovery....so it definitely thinks its being pressed down constantly...but I have found no way to make it "un-pressed"...only briefly by smacking it...

in twrp recovery, theres an option to not use the power button to select(thats what im using), is there a similar option in the newer cwm recovery? tr\y pressing the soft buttons). also, see if sticking a fingernail in between the power button helps, to pull out the button a bit.

After continuingto smack it...as well as "pulling" on the power button, I am not able to use volume buttons and power buttons within recovery...flashing a new rom now...will let you know if that fixes it...otherwise I will try unbickable in ubuntu again and see if that fixes it thanks for the pro-tip of smacking it, haha!

Phone will not go into CWM Recovery and automatically enters download mode with USB

Okay guys, I have an annoying problem. My phone after the ICS update does not want to go into CWM Recovery with the Power button + vol down (or up) method. I can never get the darn thing to work. It just loads up until the white samsung logo and then goes black and just vibrates. Any idea what could be the problem? It's an issue because it means I can't root or anything since stock won't allow me to go into recovery. The only way I used to get into recovery was through rom manager and I obviously need super user permissions to do that.
Another thing is, whenever I power on my phone with the usb cord plugged in, it automatically enters download mode. I know you're suppose to hold certain buttons but I just power the thing on and it goes straight to the DL mode screen. I'm thinking these two things could be related.
Any idea on how to fix this? I went back to complete stock and it didn't do a thing.

u need to b specific to get proper help.
u stated "Either way, the methods don't work ", specifically what methods r u talking about, there is only one method in using the buttons that works as RabidSmurf has stated, but first pull battery and dont keep usb plugged in, if that didnt work redownload cwm, check the md5 checksum and reflash using odin
To get into download mode I'm holding power+vol up+vol down
after the phone starts up release the power and keep holding up+down.
Let me know how it works.

Make sure it is not attached to any USB. Not even the power outlet because it will take you to firmware update mode (download mode) and hold up down volume keys and power until you see the white Samsung logo. good luck!

Bricked SG Tab 2 7.0

Ok. I bought this Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 from a friend for cheap because I thought I could fix it, but I'm running out of options. It's in a boot loop, but an abnormal boot loop. If it's unplugged, It will do the splash screen (Samsung) boot loop. If it's plugged in, either into the wall or into my computer via usb, it will do a battery (charging) boot loop. It's kinda weird. I used to have an Epic 4G and it happened damn near all the time, without the battery loop, but it would charge normally.
I haven't successfully gotten it to boot into Download mode.
If any of you have come across this issue, please feel free to help me out.
I also attached a picture of me attempting to put it in download mode. It reboots if I hit either VOL up or VOL down.
Thanks

Can you get into recovery? Also, have you tried unplugging the charging cable and getting into download mode with the cable unplugged?
I'm not sure how to get into recovery. With it unplugged, all I have to do hold the VOL Down physical button and ti will take me to a "are you sure you want to put the device into download mode screen". I apologize. I'm not to familiar with this device.
Edit: After I get to the screen where it asks me if i want to go into download mode, it reboots within 5-10 seconds, no matter which button I press

Hold power and Volume up (volume button closest to the power button) until the tab shuts off and reboots itself and then you can let go of both buttons. If it works, try doing a factory reset. Was this tablet rooted (or have a custom rom installed) in the past?

As far as I know it's been on Stock. My GTab ignores me holding the Power and Volume up keys at the same time and keeps the boot loop going strong.

No, his device is fine.
If your device bricked, but still showing Gtab2 logo on it, it's still fine. You need to flash to stock 4.03 rom via ODIN. (Not clockworkmod)
Warranty won't work if you have flashed custom ROM before.

He needs to be able to get into Download Mode to use Odin. He stated that he can't. When he tried to continue into download mode by pressing volume up (vol. button closes to power button) the tablet reboots. It needs warranty service.
Experiments:
Power off the tab completely and charge completely and press power +volume up for 10 seconds then release, also try to power off and press power+ volume down for 10 seconds then release do you see any screens
If it says do you want to enter download mode or so press volume up and see if you could see (downloading) try also the same with volume down instead of up
Try to connect to computer do you see any messages indicating connections
Also try to connect to kies and try restore or recover firmware from options of kies
You said it reboots after 5 to 10 seconds so try to open odin and try to go to download mode and when you press volume up try as quickly as possible to connect tab to pc while odin is open

There's other method by using OpenRecovery (OR), by putting OR on external SdCard,
but it seems the OR for Gtab2 is not developed yet -__-

[Q] Help! Can't reboot into recovery...

Hello everyone. I have Katkiss Kitkat #19 and TWRP recovery 6.something but I can't remember which. Anyway, I use to reboot into recovery by holding down the Volume down, then press Volume up when prompted to get into recovery. Now the power and volume buttons are completely busted. I can't press any of them. And I need to go into recovery to flash the new Rom.
So, here is what I tried:
1. Rom Toolbox. I tried to "Reboot into recovery" option but it just reboots the ddevice.
2. Terminal emulator: su reboot recovery, it says reboot: no such order
3. Tried to hook it to my laptop and use ADB, but no devices attached. I have Windows 8.1 64 bit. I have Android drivers installed and in the device manager it say Asus ADB and it shows Asus in the "safely remove" but I still can't see it in the My computer. I have USB debugging on and it asked me to allow my laptop keys and I agreed. Still, ADB doesn't work.
I don't know what else can I do. I can't go into recovery, bootloader or APX mode without the power and volume buttons. Is there anything i can do, or am I stuck here?
Any help will be greatly appreciated...:crying:

When you say the power and volume buttons are completely busted, have you tried taking the plastic bezel off and pressing the micro buttons under the normal silver ones ?

I tried the first one and six from the second link and none of them work. Actually, when I was installing Xposed, I pressed reboot, but it said Reboot: No such tool. I don't know what's going on.
The problem with the power button is that my kid dropped the tablet many times and it got so many dents, so I took of the casing (or whatever it's called0 and then straightened it out, out the buttons in their places and then glued it in place. Now it's really hard to press the power button (the one underneath) but it works. But how can I do that every time I want to power off or reboot into recovery, specially if there is a boot loop. I can't do anything except pressing the power button.
That's why I wanted an easy solution at least to reboot recovery.
May be I should take off the casing one more time and try to fix the power and volume buttons one more time.
I just want to thank you for your super fast reply and taking the time to find those apps.
Thanks a lot...
In the past, while still on stock ROM,I have been using this tool to overcome the missing "reboot to recovery" option in the regular Asus power menu: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.transformer.recovery
Now I have tested it on KK #19 and this tool apparently does not reboot the tablet BUT:
when I run this tool and then reboot the tablet normally (with the power menu...) I get into recovery.
So if you are already able to reboot normally through Rom Toolbox you might try to run this one first before rebooting with Rom Toolbox.
NOTE I imagine you are perfectly aware that you are playing with fire here.
In case your tablet gets into a boot-loop while installing the new ROM, you might end up with a useless tablet. Is it really worth the risk?

OK, you did it. You got me scared, so I separated the casing in the power button part and clicked on the original button with a small screwdriver and it worked. Also the volume buttons. Now I don't know what to do. May be the buttons are broken from the inside. I'll try to see if those are sold on ebay or something. If not, I'll try to attach something to them from the underside.
Anyway, I'm really grateful that you made me take this step. I'll fix it tomorrow first thing in the morning. Well, we both know I'm not gonna sleep until I get it fixed, hahaha.
Again, thanks a lot...

[Q] Phone boots to recovery only. HELP!

Hi,
My Oneplus One boots only to the CWM recovery. I noticed that my volume down button not working. So I restarted the phone, and now it only boots to CWM only.
In the recovery, the volume down button still doesn't work. It looks like the button may be stuck? and my guess is it's initiating the volume button down + power button to boot to CWM.
But I also tested the Button Test function in CWM, and the down button doesn't even register.
Is there any way to bypass this? I don't need the volume button down to work necessarily, but I need my phone to work.
I'd appreciate if there's any other way to bypass this, or maybe modify CWM file to change the recovery button combo.
If the button is stuck, then no amount of altering CWM is going to help because you'll never be able to boot into the OS with a stuck volume button. You're going to need to physically inspect and fix that volume button. In the meantime in order to have a functional recovery, ditch CWM and flash TWRP, the UI is all touchscreen so no replying on buttons, and it's leaps and bounds better than CWM anyway.

Hey, Thanks for the reply.
I noticed a few more things, which makes me to believe that this is not a physical button problem.
First, whenever I charge the device, the device won't stay OFF. It constantly turns on automatically.
However, if I don't charge, the device will stay OFF.
Second, I can't even go to Bootloader. I tried "adb reboot bootloader" from the command prompt and the phone boots directly to CWM recovery.
Third, if the volume down button is stuck, wouldn't it be activated all the times? So when I'm in CWM, it'll constantly go down, and when I test on Button Test, it should register constantly.
But that's not happening. It's simply dead.
I'm going to try the RMA process, but meanwhile, I would be glad if someone has better idea with the new info I provided here.
Thanks

[SOLVED] Desperate need of help. Tablet not booting.

Okay, so in case I'm missing something, I'll keep it quick and say my tablet (WiFI version) wont boot to the system, and no button combo will boot it into the bootloader. It goes straight to the nvidia screen no matter what, and won't get past the boot animation.
In case that doesn't cover it, and more info is needed, I'll give the complete rundown of all that happened.
I just got my tablet a few days ago, however I immedietly unlocked the bootloader, and rooted it, and was fine with that for a while. Eventually I got sick of Lollipop due to lack of support for some Xposed modules and other apps that didn't support 5.0. So I decided to boot into recovery and flash THIS CarbonROM. But it didn't boot past the CarbonROM logo, so I forced a shutdown and booted into recovery (vol down + power) and figured I had to flash the KitKat OTA, then the ROM. So I flashed THIS OTA onto my tablet in CWM, then after booting I booted back into CWM and flashed CarbonROM. It booted just fine. I then went into ES File Explorer and deleted the system apps I didn't want (calender, the stock launcher, etc.) and it worked fine. I then booted back into CWM to clear cache and Dalvik Cache, to clean up any app data that might have been left behind. After booting it stayed on the "Android is upgrading" screen for almost 20 minutes. So I decided to hard reboot it. After doing that, I'm where I am now. The tablet won't boot past the CarbonROM logo, and although I can manually power it down, no matter what I do, I can't boot it into bootloader. I have gotten to the bootloader from a powered off state plenty of times before, in fact it's my preferred method of doing so. But now it skips straight to the Nvidia screen, followed by the CarbonROM screen, and never boots.
Also, I had just flashed the ROM, and had never enabled adb debugging.
Any possible solution would be greatly appreciated, as like I said I just bought the tablet days ago.
Try connecting it to your pc, boot it up, and try running "adb reboot revovery" after it's been running for a bit

I seem to get a "error: device offline" message when I try that.
I have used adb and fastboot before this issue so I know my drivers and adb files are just fine :/
Edit: When I unplug the usb from the tablet it makes the low battery noise. I think it's booted to the system but stuck at the CarbonROM logo for some reason. I did delete the stock launcher without installing a new one...
Edit: Since I had just flashed the ROM, I had not yet gone into developer options and enabled adb debugging. I had only done it before I flashed the ROM.
