[Q] 4ext touch or cwm touch? - HTC Desire S

hello everybody I'm currently using clockwork mod touch but I keep hearing loads of people talking about 4ext and was wondering what is better in terms of backing up and restoring?

Earlier used ROM Manager - Now I use 4EXT (classic version, now touch) 5 months - think 4EXT's more rapidly growing (often updated & themed))) - no problems when using it

cheers oleg I'm gonna give 4ext ago coz it does sound alot better especially because of the theme capabilities and I did read somewhere that it has a md5 checker which sounds neat also

Checking "where" may be choosen -inApp -inRecoveryMode
very comfortable using
batch flashing
for ex - in one step (no touching the screen in Recovery Mode ))))
save backup of the current rom
wipe (if flash an other custom ROM) or not wipe (if update current by newer ROM)
flash ROM (checking MD5)
flash titanium backup
flash Gaps (for example)
autoreboot or stay in recovery
etc.

its definitely got more options and seems to be abit quicker at backing up but haven't tried the restore yet so can't comment on that but I do like it better than cwm because of all the extra options and us now my recovery and can't wait for the update already so I can test some themes out

yeah agreed. I switch to cwm touch yesterday and not really liking it. I think it's a bit quicker than 4ext touch (probably due to lack of animations) but the scrolling is horrible and there's not many options. I also like all the small features of 4ext like telling you how long the backup took.

4ext why?- 3ext convert in 4ext (cash and system)

4ext ofcourse, it has so many options ,,most importantly changing the file system without losing any data,, in addition to themes and stuff, not that u need them but its there

I used to use CWM, then I updated to another ROM and it magically changed to 4EXT touch lol... Not sure how, but I like 4EXT a lot more. For me it's nicer to look at then CWM.

4ext has more advanced features than cwm secondly it is much faster and more reliable thirdly ext3 can be easily changed to ext4 format, which I can't find in cwm

4ext is the one. User friendly, with the right options. What more can you ask for?

Custom Mods of CWM Recovery for HTC Desire S
Here i want to present two custom mods of clockworkmod recovery.
edit: development is very fast... the superhero madmaxx82 merged this features from older mods and rewrites everything from scratch.
please use his recovery. it´s working with unity kernel and has awesome features.
Just have a look on this site: 4EXTRecovery v1.1.1 | STAY @EXT4 | Convert EXT4 without losing data | Advanced Backup
_______________________________________________________
j_r0dd´s modded version:
ATTENTION: May not work together with MDJ´s Unity Kernel. Need confirming that new compiled version is working.
See this post for a test version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14854094&postcount=64
the first ist based on the newest version, which is v4.0.0.5
it is made by xda developer j_r0dd. so it is totaly his work.
i compiled his stuff to get it working for our HTC Desire S.
check out the screenshots from his original post on xda developers.
[MOD][RECOVERY][6.11.11] Clockwork 4.0.0.2 New wipe & confirm menus. For ALL variants
As you can see it has a cleaned up options menu.
features like "wipe all" and all other wipe options like "wipe cache", "wipe data", "wipe system" or "wipe dalivik" are now included in ONE menu not in 3.
j_r0dd changed the "confirm menu" too. he shorten the options to ONE "YES" and ONE "NO"
these little changes safes a lot of time, cause you needn´t klick so much.
please ignore the version number in screenshots... they seem to be a little outdated.

arco68´s modded version:
the second version is made by xda developer arco68. the same like above... he made it, i compiled it for HTC desire s.
you can find the original post here:
[Recovery] ClockworkMod v3.1.0.2 (with offmode charging)
it´s a little bit older but doing his job very well.
i know this mod from my wildfire days and used it for quite a long time.
the bonus features in this version are a "full wipe" option and an "advanced backup"
sounds not much but for me this advanced backup option is the best i ever used.
you can choose which partionions you want to backup.
for me as rom-chef it´s enough to backup system.img and boot.img to cook a rom from that. taht safes me a lot of sdcard space and time.
for you it could manage your data.img backups. e.g. backup data.img and cache.img, wipe your phone, install newest version of saga lbc mod or another rom, restore your data.img and cache.img with "advanced restore" option.
______________________________________________________
you can download older versions on my developer site
Modded Clockworkmod Recovery - LBC Mod Android Dev
______________________________________________________
install-instructions:
download zip package you want or need
put it on the root of your sdcard
rename it to PG88IMG.zip
reboot your phone in bootloader
go into hboot
hboot will check your sdcard for the PG88IMG.zip and ask if you want to flash radio.img
confirm flahing
reboot your phone
rename the PG88IMG.zip back to something else cause if you are in bootloader, hboot will try to flash that file every time when it is named PG88IMG.zip

Backup Data?

Hey i want to Backup my complete Android 4.0 on my HD2, because i want to change the partitions...
So how can i backup my:
-apps
-contacts
-words in keybord
-calender
as easy as possible pls
boot into the recovery mode and select backup. can't make that easier.
this will make a nandroid backup of your whole phone to the sdcard, it will be a folder with images of the various mounts and is a complete system with everything in its current state. using the same tool you can also restore it. Since you want to adjust the partitions, the size of these images will also give you a good guideline of how large system and cache need to be minimally with your current rom setup.
ok thanks, thats an good answer
can u give me a short tutorial?
i cant find the backup button...
reading you wanted to backup your ICS rom, i figured you had just another android phone which pretty much all have clockworkmod as recovery mode installed. I have no experience with the HD2 though, which is original a windows phone. Dunno if that matter and if maybe you have a different recovery console to boot into?
basically it should look similar to this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
one of the menu items should say "backup and restore" or just "Nandroid" (which is the name of the rom backup software). either way, select that and you'll enter a submenu where the choices "backup" or "restore" should be self explanatory. Backup will create a backup folder in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ and with restore you can navigate to backup files on the sdcard.
It could be that you have a different recovery console, then let me know which one. (similar to the pic above it will have the name on the top of the screen, or it will say somewhere like "build:"). Though most alternatives have a backup option too in a similar fashion.
ok thanks i found it now
really great help
Your welcome, glad you fixed it.

if i want to backup ervything, but want to use another rom (no android ics) how can i backup?
Nandroid backup and look at Rom toolbox for the app manager. I think it's better than titanium.
Nandroid from Recovery/Rom Manager for an entire Image Backup.
Titanium Backup App for bits and pieces like user data.
use My Phone Explorer..
its awesome..
u need to have it in phone and a client on system.
Auto Sync.
good feature

newbee with roms

I have rooted my nexus s 4g using sdk method, I'm thinking of diving into installing the cm-10 but need instructions. Pardon if by chance I'm in wrong forum, but they wouldn't let me swim in the developer pool yet.
Welcome to the world of flashing
WARNING!! this will delete all your apps and data so use a program like titanium backup to backup all of your apps and data.
1. Make sure you have CWM Recovery installed. (If not, download rom manager from the play store and flash it.
2. Download the rom you wish to install, and put it on the root of your sdcard. Plus the gapps if there are any.
3. Turn your phone off and hold the volume + button and power button at the same time to boot into the bootloader. Navigate using the volume buttons and select recovery using the power button. If you have the touch recovery you can use touch otherwise use volume keys and power button.
4. Go into backup/restore and click backup and scroll down and hit yes. (This makes a NANdroid, which is a backup of your stock rom. If anything goes wrong or stuck in a bootloop or just having problems, you can restore your stock rom using this)
5. Hit wide data/factory reset, wipe cache and then go into advanced and click wipe dalvik cache.
6. Go back and click install from sdcard and then choose from sdcard and then choose the rom you want to install.
7. Reboot and it should take about 5 Mins to reboot. (dont worry, everytime you install a new rom, it will take a little longer than usual)
8. Once rebooted, you will be asked to set up your phone like when you first got it.
Well done you just installed your first rom
Happy flashing.
Read this three times, then do it... this has every step from a new phone, so you may skip a couple steps.

Welcome to the NS4G club...now to down to businesses. If you want the east way just use ROM Manager it currently has a CM10 ROM in burnsa. Make sure on the options before flashing you select all 3. So you have a back up and a clean flash. Have fun

May I ask if both cameras are working OK? It seems my back camera freezes with any CM7 based ROMs.

Custom Recovery File Manager!!!!

Just found this cool recovery file manager so thought should share.Find the original post here.
Aroma file manager lets you manage the file system(copy, cut, paste, delete, make new folder, etc) from both sdcard as well as the root of the device just like any other file manager out there but hold on here's the catch you can do all that from the RECOVERY(well custom recovery to be exact).
The best part is it has a nice touchscreen interface.You can touch and hold on the file to set permissions too.It even has includes a terminal emulator.And you can set themes in it and fonts etc etc.
So all in all a great option to have in case you mess up.No more flashing the whole ROM again just because you messed up with a few apks or files and ended up bootlooping.
So to get started the installation is pretty simple:
1.Copy the zip into your sdcard.
2.Reboot your device into recovery mode.
3.Choose install from sdcard.
4.Select the AROMA Filemanager ZIP.
And there you go the file manager will start up!!!
Edit: To access the system and other folders which are not showing you'll have to mount them first.it's just a one time process actually.
Go to settings and select auto mount all devices at start.apply and reflash the zip you'll get access to everything.!!!
Find the download in the attachment below.

This is to have the custom recovery without installing bootstrappers like bootmenu manager or atrix 2 bootstrapper?

No bro..
This can be flashed only on custom recovery like bootmenu or bootstrapper.the thing is if you are doing some modding or playing around with your system and end up bootlooping(while having the custom recovery)you can correct your wrong doing by this.or even if you wanna copy something to from sdcard while in boot loop or softbrick this will come in handy.

Thanks for testing this out! Wasn't sure if it worked on the A2.. could come in handy.
