App development softwares for non-programmers - General Questions and Answers

Hey there, I am a physician and I work in a busy hospital. Sometimes there are too many things to do and too many patients to attend to. I prioritize and re-prioritize my visits and procedures all the time and it's not easy using paper notebooks. So I need a special app for my phone and tablet with some special features. The basics are very similar to a database-driven combination of a task manager apps and to-do list apps but there are some features which I need to be specialize, like patients lab tests and procedures. I wonder if there is a WYSIWYG software which helps me develop my own app without coding.
Really appreciate any useful suggestions.

There is googles app inventor which is very easy but it will close soon. Its an online programming environment for those who don't know programming languages and is how I started with android apps. Its nearest thing to what you are after I think.
I use basic4android now, very easy to use programming language if you don't mind learning it.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I wish I had the time to learn a language like the one you mentioned but it's near to impossible for me. Even if I have a little time to spare on a daily basis, there are tons of new medical updates everyday and I prefer to read them, as they may help me, help patients. I will look at the google app inventor but it's a shame that it will be terminated soon
Thanks again for the reply

I think google are making it open source so that others can offer it so it might not die just google will not offer it after a set date.
You could ask a developer to write an app for you, not sure what they would charge though.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Before I get into details I will go ahead and say I am a noob so please take it easy on me. I just registered for school, for CIS computer programming. I am a techno junkie, mostly about cell phones in general. I'm going to school to help my wifes' grandfather implement his software on to the mobile platform. Not sure about all the details yet, but I feel developing is my purpose in life. My main love as of right now is the android OS. I'm not a big fan of apple but they do have a very unique thing going on. My main question is about programing languages, and what is the best place to start, I've definitely heard mixed things as I know theres no definitive" answer per say, but any developers input would be greatly appreciated. I'm a deer caught in headlights when it comes to this.

I first started with c++ which gave me a grasp of programming. Its retty easy to learn. It is also easily iplemented, I used things I learnt in that to help debug my actionscript coding

I don't think it matters much where you start with languages but rather when will you have completed the circle of several languages.
I firmly believe you need to learn assembly language, then a language that is essentially a pre-processor for assembly such as C, then C++, then Java and then higher level more abstract domain specific languages. Only after you understand where they each stand in terms of abstraction from hardware will you be good to go.
I also believe it is imperative that you understand linking, loading and all that is required to 'boot strap' code.
Just my 2 cents worth, I am sure many will disagree.
thanks so much, i really appreciate yalls advice. this is just what i was looking for. looks like a long road ahead of me...

Seriously want to start Developing - Need some help.

It's not just another one of those 'LOLZ WANA DEVLOP PLZZ HELPPPZZ'.....
I'm very serious and need to know where to start off. I would maybe do it for a living when I'm older. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while. I used to mess around with some private servers coded in Java, but I didn't learn much.
I'm just wondering if there was a place where I could take classes online, or a good way to start off. I would be using my Evo for development aswell.
Any serious help would be appreciated.

The best place to learn and this may be a shock...for real. But i had begun to read an android development book and that didnt really do it for me but when i started to read Google Development pages it all made sense.
developer.android.com
Check it out.
1) read the entire dev guide
developer.android.com/guide/basics/what-is-android.html
2) install sdk and eclipse
3) build hello world and deploy to emulator, then to real device
You'll be on your way to devdom if you can make it through these 3 trivial steps
I bought three android books and they all seem to be very helpful in their own ways.
Hello, Android! 3rd edition - Great for beginners to the android platform
Professional Android 2 - Great and has a good amount of corners covered. From layouts to bluetooth and wifi. This one is by wrox and the code samples are available online without purchase verification.
Advanced Android - Good but not really worth is.
I've spend sometimes using eclipse but i can say it's quite buggy for now.
You may wanna stick to it but i suggest to test the last IntelliJ X Community
It's free and it get Android dev without plugins. I get this tips from the Twitter
of Romain Guy ...
For the dev, a little book from manning.com. They offers code is you register
you can get 50% of the price. Android in action.
Then for the advanved topics StackOverflow is now replacing the android
newbies developpers google group officially and there's a lot of advanced topics.
Give yourself some weeks to get some results, you've to learn the philosophy
of a new system.

Learning Java and programming using an app called AIDE

I was wondering if this app is reasonable to learn how to program and create apps, being an extreme novice (I mean that at the lowest level) and having very little patience and giving up so easily, maybe its a good thing to try and learn for 10 minutes here and there when having free time, what do you people think?
Here is the link to the app so you know what app I am talking about https://play.google....bS5haWRlLnVpIl0.
Any feedback or advice welcome, whether its positive or negative, thank you.

having been in this situation....
it takes MUCH longer than 10 mins to try to figure something out. i personally think that programming is NOT for you.
I'm not going to attempt to crush your dreams or anything, but I know from personal experience and from watching my friends in my classes, that if you have little patience, expect little results.

Pretty much this. I've been learning Java for some time now, and I can tell you that it's not something you can learn in "10 minutes here and there," especially if you're new to programming. Since I'm assuming this will be your first programming language, you'll have to grasp the basic concepts first, then implement them in Java. Of course, once you've learned concepts, picking up languages is quicker; it's like human languages, where the meanings are the same, but the words and grammar are different. Either way, it's not something you can do without patience.
Oh, and that app won't actually teach you anything. It'll allow you to write programs, sure, but it won't teach you how to do it. If you want to learn Java, get a book or look up lessons online. And you might want to do your coding on a computer first. It's more convenient.
Just to add my thoughts: I have never made an app for anything before, but I have been wanting to try and start making android apps. When I saw this app in the market I got pretty excited and decided to finally attempt it. Now obviously what everyone else said is true, it is not easy...at all! lol, but if you want to spend the time and learn then this app is a really cool( and I think pretty easy) way to make apps. I mean...its an app used to make other apps . The main thing is to not get discouraged by how difficult it may be and instead get help when you're stuck. I'm in highschool and the computer science teacher there happens to be working with android this year so I often go to him for help. I think actually talking to people who know a bit about android is the best way to get help, but I'm sure books and online lessons could help as well.
Basically the point of all of that ^^^ is this: This is a pretty good app for making apps. It won't teach you how to do it, but if you do want to learn then this is a great tool to do so.

I am more of a visual learner, books aint cuttin it for me (sorry for slang lol) here are some youtube vids, FAR longer than ten minutes
Vids for Developing
I've got a friend that started recently with these videos.

LESS than 10 minutes a piece. Typically 5. Baby steps!
Looks like I'm too new to put links up. Just stick that after youtube and you'll find it.

[Q] Would like some help making a new app

Hello all,
I am not really any kind of coder or developer myself. However, I am looking for someone who is -- maybe someone new to the game, to help me with an app I'd like to have on my phone (HTC Thunderbolt).
It's basically a time-card app, pretty simple. There are numerous of these out there, but I'd like to have one specifically geared towards my industry. There are already a couple that exist for the iPhone, but none that I can find for Android. Below are examples of what I'm talking about:
http://www.crewtimecard.com/
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wrap-time-time-card-for-film/id335510869?mt=8
I'd like to make a better one, and one for Android. Really, it would be just for my personal use, but I'm sure many others would be interested as well. Perhaps if someone out there is a developer as a hobby, looking for more practice, etc., this might suit that person. I'd love to talk about collaborating on such a project.
Thanks!
Not to be rude, but I'd be surprised if anyone bites on your offer. Developing and testing apps properly takes a significant amount of time and dedication, and the examples you gave indicate that the app you're looking for could be quite complicated. Unless you come across a developer that happens to need the same thing, or that you are willing to pay, you may be SOL.
Of course, this sounds like the perfect opportunity to learn how to program! There are plenty of great websites out there that will walk you through the entire process form scratch. Good Luck!

Not really.
These 2 site can help you from scratch.
http://www.codeacademy.com
www.code.org
Google has their own site to teach people.

Sounds like you might need to learn several languages to accomplish your goal. Not sure of one particular one to meet your goal.

Hey everyone at XDA, this is probably in the wrong section and i apologise for that, i am currently at college doing a software development course, and i would like a few tips into what course to take when i go uni, i want to continue into developing for phones, apps and stuff, as that is currently whats going forward in the world and its not dying any time soon, so i think it is a great thing to go into, i just dont know which course i should take, any pointers?
Thank you very much in advance for any help given :good:

Java. Everything is Java. LOL
Beyond that, basic programming courses, C language (and any variants)...
It'll really depend on the platform you wish to code for, Ubuntu Touch, I'm sure, is inherently different from Android, as Android is from Apple, etc...
There are guides on here (actually in this very forum) that give you links to free programming courses from MIT.
Anything else a quick google search should turn up for you:good:
Good luck, and happy Dev'ing :victory:

What @Stryke_the_Orc said.. for android app development many people don't take a course as such just learn it in their free time as a branch away from their regular course. We have an app development forum as well where there are links to many guides as well as packages and libraries which you may find useful during the development of any app.. most of them are open source..
Also there are many Youtube video tutors which are available for app development and so is Google's own website @ developer.android..
So if you plan on taking on another course you can do this in your free time as well provided you know Java / C and its branches .. learning a new computer language is different skill set altogether.. which will require your full attention. So, depending upon your caliber and your own potential choose your course wisely.
Okay thank you very very much for both of your answers, they are both extremely helpful and i will take it all into consideration Thanks again
Whichever development path you choose, don’t forget good old fashioned Mathematics. In fact, stuffing as much of it into your head as it will stand, is not such a bad thing.
Sometimes it lets you see a much better/faster way of doing something.
Sign up for a course, or there are books from the library, even articles on Wikipedia.
Good Luck!
If you want to start developing for Android and you know Java, check out The New Boston's Android Development YouTube videos. They helped me a lot!
Am sure the best platform you can focus on now is Android
