I've been doing a search to see if its worth updating my stock Galaxy S 4G to Gingerbread via the official update with Samsung Kies.
Does anyone know of a specific list of all the pros and cons to do so?
I've been pretty happy with my phone these last few months, but if the update can truly improve the performance, I'd probably give it ago.
I'm hoping to develop a little game plan for doing so, perhaps updating to Gingerbread, and then rooting the phone to erase a few programs like TelNav.
Any know the best way to root the phone once its been updated?
I'm also curious if anyone knows if the Gingerbread update will allow me to install Skype, because as of now my phone can't even install it (it just reboots with a failed install every time).
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Yes. Worth it. Do it.
Here is a guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21954884
what about Skype?
Thanks for the links. I will tread carefully.
Do you happen to know if Skype with video will work once the Gingerbread update is installed?

my phone is using a chip from another company (movistar-peru). would there be a problem if i update to gingerbread trough kies? i guess they might have changed the configuration of the phone. any advice?
A chip? Do you mean a SIM card? If so, and you have a Galaxy S 4G - SGH-T959V you can update.
Wont his phone be relocked once he upgrades?
I'm not sure if it will re-lock. If so, he can use FB's unlocker script to re-unlock it.
@migueltr14 as lumin stated if you have that model of phone then yes you can update. Be aware tho it is possible to have to unlock the phone. If you dont have the unlock code I suggest getting it first.
Or you can root the device after and use the method in the link below.

You can update u just may need to unlock the phone(not root) since its a tmobile phone on a different network
Sent From My Rockin' Galaxy S 4G
Oh thanks for the infor!, but when you say that i might have to unlock the phone, you're talking about paying for a web site to give the code or there's another way of getting it?
You can go that route. Or if you root the phone the link in my previous post will tell you how to get the code yourself.
Thanks a lot!, i updated my phone, SIM card works fine (didn't need the unlock code)

I was currently using MIUI GB build from brainmaster, and I wanted to switch to the ICS after finally finding out they halted the OTA update. Well I'm using T-Mobile, and when i flashed the stock rom back, i was not able to us the 9023t stock rom as it kept giving errors. So i had to tried the 9020a (which i believe is for ATT) and that worked. My phone is able to make calls and receive texts, but it only shows that its on edge (e) and no more 3g on the status bar.
My question is, is there a way to switch the baseband back to a 9023t build? or did i always have an ATT branded phone?
edit:
This is what my phone status shows:
Carrier: Tmobile
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband: I9020AUCKF1
Kernal: 2.6.35.7-gf5f63ef
[email protected] #1
Build: GRK39F
Another update:
Just verified after pulling my battery the model states:
GT-I9020T
It seems that you have flashed an I9020A baseband on an I9020T. There have been reports that people who have done this have never been able to get 3G again.
However, you can try to follow this link and flash the KI1 baseband and see what happens.
Just out of interest... do you know anyone with an AT&T sim that you can borrow to see if you can pick up AT&T's 3G now? (you would have to make sure that then APN for att is entered and selected) It's extremely doubtful but would be interesting to know nevertheless...

I will try and flash that baseband, and will update asap. As of right now, I dont have an ATT sim card, but if i do come across one i will update as well.
Also, do you know why it happened to let me install the 9020a rom, and not the 9020t? I had to root my phone from scratch all over again to erase the MIUI rom and to try to bring it back to stock. Every time i tried to install the 9020t/9023 it kept giving me the error message:
E: Failed to verify whole-file signature
But it worked like a charm when i attempted to do it with the 9020a.
I was able to flash the KI1 baseband with no problems at all. Now with this will I be able to flash ICS?

Either flash the official OTA or an ICS ROM that doesn't contain a radio.
I bought this Nexus S, i9020. It's just a couple of days old. Had ICS 4.0.4 and when connected to WiFi, phone started downloading latest system update. Installed the update quickly. The battery however, started draining too quickly after the update.
My problem or nightmare started when I tried to revert or downgrade this cellphone to Gingerbread 2.3.6, because I read that on GB, this phone's battery lasted for more than a day.
Anyhow, when I downloaded this One_Step_Click guide for downgrading to GB 2.3.6, the phone actually downgraded, but to my utter surprise, it has downgraded to Sprint Nexus S 4G, the phone now shows following:
Model number: Nexus S 4G (which it's not, its Nexus S i9020)
Android version: 2.3.4
Baseband version: Unknown
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-ge382d80
Build number: GRJ22
The phone has lost the GSM signal, although SIM is still in the SIM slot. I can still connect to WiFi and connect to my Google account.
FYI, i am using Ufone GSM network here in Karachi, Pakistan.
Need urgent help in restoring my Nexus S to its original state to be able to use on GSM network.
Appreciate your help.
Thanks.
Seems like you are actually messed up. So you want Gingerbread 2.3.6 on your NS, right?
Just confirm me one thing, is it I9020T or I9020A? I'll be easily able to help you then

I am facing a similar issue (in Pakistan) and can't seem to find the right baseband/radio. I tried almost all radios at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116884 but the problem remains - I get very very low signals (my SIM works fine on other phones). Any PM for me as well

UNDER THE STATUS IT SAIDS PHONE NUMBER, SIGNAL,ETC. IT GIVES ME THE IMEI NUMBER, THE SAME NUMBERAS IF I PRESS ##06# AND UNDER TH BATTERY. Ah, stop yelling! I HAVE PROBLEMS READING ALL CAPS.
I think you need to tell us what the problem is again.
The only problem I see is that you say that the imei under the battery is not the same as the imei in the about -> status area of the phone.
I'm going to guess that you bought your phone off craigslist or something.
Beyond that, it's hard to follow what else you are rambling about. So, please ask your question again.

The imei for the phone is all the same 1.( ##06# ) is the exact as under the battery. now the imei is the exact as the settings, about phone, status, scroll down to see imei. The phone works good with a few glitches here and there, and is also unlocked, this was done by him first. Then I tried to have it flashed to gingerbread to fix it using odin, it did have fryo on it, no craigslist, just knew the guy, well thought I did anyway. Now he wont return any calls or emails.
Problem Samsung and T-Mobile and AT&T sees the phones imei as a Samsung focus sgh-i917. What do you think that happened to this? and how can I fix this issue? sorry for the rambling but I wanted to try to get as specific as I could as far as I know Samsung focus is a windows 7 phone, but this Samsung galaxy s 4g has android. sorry for all cap in earlier post thanks just for reading

You can find Odin flashable firmwares at sammobile.com. I'm guessing you'll lose root, but you can always re-root with Chainfire Auto-Root. You're well passed any warranty, so don't worry about KNOX or the triangle (since you can use Triangle Away for that).
You should also look into custom ROMs, either custom AOSP (based on stock Android) and customized Samsung ROMs. That way you're not stuck with Verizon's crapplications.
One possibly easier fix is to create a new APN. I don't know if this is doable with your device's version (I imagine it is) though, since I don't happen to have a Samsung running ICS. But if you go to the APN list in settings, look for a + button, and you can create a new APN. You might have to reselect it after a reboot.
Regardless of what you end up trying, you won't lose your carrier unlock. SIM lock is stored in a different part of the firmware and once you're unlocked, you're forever unlocked.

The VZW S3 came sim unlocked out of the box regardless of what VZW will tell you
Sent from my N5
Hi,
I am using samsung Galaxy S6 ATT version with the following software version:
Android Version 6.0.1
Android Security Patch September 1,2016
Baseband Version G920AUCS5DPI1
Build number MMB29K.G920AUCS5DPI1
The phone is sim unlocked but I need help with rooting / unlocking the bootloader. On checking this forum I did not see that there is any way to do this on my version. So I was just wondering if there is anything else (such as installing any other ROM) that I can do with this phone.
Since the contract on my phone has expired I tried using this phone with another carrier and it does not seem to be working (tried with metroPCS) the phone does not show any other network operators except ATT/T-mobile and Verizon and on trying to connect to T-mobile it fails to connect (metro PCS uses T-mobile line)
After spending few hours with an account rep from metro he felt the phone may not be compatible. So at this point I am just trying to figure out if there is anything I can do with this device.
Sorry for the long winded post but I just hate how these carriers tell you that after the contract you own the device but their own software updates mess up any chance of using your own device as you want.
Appreciate any insight or links to help me figure out if anything can be down to get rid of the ATT rom.
Thanks,
Matt
