[Q] Root unlocked SNS - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello xda world! I am a n00b here so please have mercy on me.
I just bought the Samsung Google Nexus S i9020A 3G unlocked. I want to root it so I can use apps that require root access (Titanium Backup, AdAway, etc). I rooted my locked Samsung Captivate using SuperOneClick (discovered via lifehacker). I tried rooting the SNS with it, but it stopped responding at "running psneuter". I tried GingerBreak, but it stopped responding at "running gingerbreak". Can my SNS be rooted with SOC? If it can, how? If it can't, is there another one-click method? All the guides I found are complicated, and I'm scared I'll brick my phone. They also all start with unlocking your phone, which I don't need to do because it's already unlocked. Any help would be AWESOME... thanks!
Model number: Nexus S
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband version: I9020AUCKE1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-ge382d80 [email protected] #1
Build number: GTJ61

Directions are scarce on that thread.
I downloaded the files, ran the script, and plugged in my phone with USB debugging mode on... nothing happened. Am I missing something?

try the guides at nexusshacks.com.
read and re-read the instructions until you understand what the steps mean and what the concepts mean.
it's not easy to brick the Nexus S. flashing the wrong radio image on the wrong model would be one thing that could brick it, so try to stay away from happy flashing radio.

Learn how to do it the proper way. Flash or boot a custom recovery with fastboot and flash the su.zip
Clicking away at one click crap and scripts when you have no idea wtf you're doing is just dumb IMHO.

[Q] How to unroot Samsung Galaxy S 4G????please help!

I have a Tmobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G
Model Number: SGH-T959V
Firmware Version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: Unknown
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Build Number: FROYO.VUVKB5
What exactly must i do to restore everything to factory settings and to unroot phone? The reason i say this is i don't want to void warranty and i need to send the phone back.I don't have a clue on how to unroot (friend rooted phone for me). I would greatly appreciate your help!
Try here:
http://www.samsunggalaxysforum.com/...m/?PHPSESSID=f2c968f0ef15a507ff925687971d1be8
that link works for me )
i went to the link but I am unsure of which files to pick. I downloaded Odin but what do I do from there? which pit file do i select? I don't understand which file i have to select under PDA or PHONE or CSC
If you have already got the ok to send it back there is no need to unroot. the tech fixing it isnt going to take extra steps to see if you rooted your phone and I highly doubt they will stop fixing your phone if in fact they did find out it was rooted.
And if they do I"m out the cost of the phone. I'd just like to unroot to be sure but, Jasus!! last time I rooted it was way easier. Now it's Odin and this and that. I"m not a complete newb but I can't figure out Odin to save my life. Instructions I read refer me to things that aren't on my version, etc. Is there a "Unrooting for Dummies" out there somewhere??
Well ur phone has ota ready. Just check for an update and it will update and root willcbe gone

Odin is very simple to use. Just load the pda and pit and click start.

Wouldn't we need to unlock the bootloader first in order to install CWM? Even then, wouldn't we also need a custom version of it made for this phone? Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't we have to do this first before any modding can get done?

i don't know to much about boot loaders but i was able to root my phone without unlocking the boot loader. But if i do need it unlocked, i would need to be ran through how to do it for my phone. An i suppose a custom CWM would have to be made unless another version would be compatible with it
From what I am reading about installing CWM on other phones, an unlocked bootloader would be needed. You don't necessarily need the bootloader to be unlocked to root this phone since we are using SuperOneClick. We also need a custom CWM unless another version is compatible that is correct. There is currently no known ways of unlocking the bootloader for this phone.
can anybody tell me how to hard reset my LG MyTouch?? please and thank you

Yes that would be correct. But it would be great if this phone's boot loader was similar to another phone's boot loader so that i can test the settings to see if the commands would work. Then no really hard work would have to be done i guess But I also just opened up this topic so if someone is working on a solutionn soon us lg mytouch users can be notified of its coming arrival.
ive rooted this phone.. Havent had time to tinker with anything yet though i just rooted a couple hours ago. Will let you know.

[Q] Unrooted, restored G2X 2.2.2 not updating to Gingerbread

So, I'm having a rather unique problem with my t-mobile G2X that I can't seem to find the answer to. The closest I could find is this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1478549
yet following the instructions given to be giving me no success.
A while back, before the Over the Air update to 2.3.3 rolled out, I decided to root my phone. I'm not too sure about the exact method I used, but I recall attempting to use SuperOneClick unsuccessfully. It kept prompting me to install ADB drivers, followed by hanging on some steps and never actually rooting successfully. This occurred over on multiple computers.
So, having followed this tutorial:
http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/23/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2x/
the current state of my phone is:
Code:
Model Number:
LG-P999
Android Version:
2.2.2
Baseband Version:
M6600A-SCAUTNZ-2.0.9720T 1 -JUL 15 2011 10:00:00] MP:TRULGE_08.09.02R_MDM
Kernel version:
2.6.32.9
Build number:
FRG83G
Software Version:
LG-P999-V10f
Every time I try to Software Update Check, I get the following message:
"Current version is the latest version."
I know for a fact 2.2.2 is not the latest version, as 2.3.3 rolled out over the air on July 25th of last year.
I should note that the unrooting process made use of SuperOneClick and as just like before, it gave me problems and hung on some steps, freezing and requiring a force close. I'm unsure if it successfully unrooted my phone without leaving any strange remnants anywhere!
Is there any way for me to get my (presumably) unrooted 2.2.2 G2X into a state where it will successfully update to 2.3.3, completely unrooted? (Preferably without the use of SuperOneClick, as it's been giving me serious problems.)
Thanks
Have you tried lg updater? Have you tried rooting via nvflash?

LG Updator (B2CAppSetup_3.exe I assume) gives me the following when it auto-checks the version, and when I attempt to run recovery:
"The Cell phone is the latest version already. So you don't need to update."
As for rooting with nvFlash, what good will that do if I may ask? Is there a reason I should be rooted? My goal is to have an unrooted device, able to update to the latest version of the firmware; basically something I could hand to T-Mobile without anything looking suspicious.
Thanks again!

You dont have to root to use CWM. You can have an unrooted device and still install custom Roms like stock GB or Tsugi/Bionix, but all you have to do is change the recovery. No rooting needed
Is there a reference I can use to learn how to do that? There's tons of CWN tutorials, but I wouldn't know which one to follow and I don't want to risk screwing up my phone any worse! From what I'm gathering, I'd imagine what I'd need to do is get the stock T-Mobile G2X rom and flash it to my phone?
Thanks dudes
check out tgagunmans nvflash cwm thread in dev section, easy instructions.

ALRIGHT! So. After some painful trouble shooting, going through TGA_Gunman's NVflash thread and putting pieces together, I've managed to get my phone into an unrooted state with 2.3.3. What I had to do was install the APX drivers and follow the instructions listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17258229
I would like to bring up a couple of concerns I have.
The phone has stock recovery, and has had 2.3.3 flashed onto it via the batch script in the thread above. My concern with this is, when I got the phone it was on 2.2.2 and eventually got the Over the Air update. If I were to take this phone to T-Mo, would there be anything suspicious they could find?
And lastly, I'd like to ask if the process listed in the thread above would be considered "Flashing a rom." I'm a bit naive on the subject, and would like some confirmation.
Thanks so much for your patience guys! Hopefully my phone's back in an acceptable state! Who knows, I may experiment with more roms and hacks in the future ;}
Thanks again!
If you think they'll be suspicious, and you have insurance, take a hammer to it.
Since they aren't stocking G2x's anymore and they probably won't have any in stock, you'll probably get a nice new Galaxy S 4G! Oh joy!
But seriously, don't do that. I don't think they should have any reason to be suspicious, but I'm no expert.
When I switched out my Samsung Vibrant out about 4 months ago, all the Rep did was look for the Superuser app. Since I didnt have one (I had flashed back to stock, but you can hide/uninstall the app) I was handed my new Vibrant. Till I again broke it recently. Glad to be on the G2X though.
If you want a close to stock ROM, I suggest Bionic Reloaded v3 as its based off of the OTA 2.3.3, and is the most stable ROM available to us, and probably will be, as its based on the official release. Hope this helps.

Will oden brick my phone?
Is ics available using oden?
Is rooting necessary to update via oden?
If oden does not require a rooted phone for this could you point me in the right direction on what to do before I use oden to upgrade... a simple step by step.
Hope this helps

Oden will not brick your phone if you use it correctly with the correct files.
Its not a big deal if you root your phone. You can usually unroot it later.
The big thing is if you use Oden and your phone does NOT have a official ICS rom then you need to install a custom ICS rom and all of the Custom roms that I know of are pre rooted.
The best way to go is using clock work recovery but you do need to root your phone first to use it.
A lot of great tutorials on this site for that.
Thankyou Goul for the info!!

In Need of Help!.. (Status: Confused and @ A Loss!) Model: SCH-I535, Android: 4.3

Hi there, My names K.C. and ive been having trouble (more then i thought id have) trying to root and in learning how too root my Samsung Galaxy SIII, and other devices I own. but its been one headache after another with this device, currently I own three of these little buggers and of all the three ive settled down with my Verizon SIII Model: SCH-I535, Android: 4.3, Baseband: I535VRUCML1, Kernel: 3.0.31 [email protected] #1, Build: JSS15J.I535VRUCML1, SE: Permissive, Hardware: I535.10
Now I've tried to gain root a number of ways, and to no success in any of them, For the longest time I was trying no too use a computer, or anything other then my device and still nothing yet. I have tried kingroot, kingoroot, towelroot, and many others all say the same thing, "Your Device is Now Rooted" "Root Gained" "Made it Rain" so on and so forth, I am currently still in need of Root, but I have gained some root, and I have tried too boot into a custom recovery to no avail. I have downloaded so many files, programs, and have tried everything I can think of though I havent much experience with linex, IOS, or Android, and have very limited experience with any OS as is but I joined XDA with hopes of finding good help, that wont confuse me with a long list of details that doesnt even play a factor into wat i am doing.
