[Q] Xoom possible brick while trying to install official ICS - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well I tried to install ICS, and right after the reboot, within 10 sec. the adroid w/ a exclamation mark came up and I cannot do anything. I can adb into it, but I do not know what to do after that.
I tried to do a fastboot reboot command, but it only says waiting for device.
I have unlocked and rooted the xoom, but I have not done anything else custom to it was was running stock honeycomb. Thanks for any help!

I was able to get it back up and working on honeycomb, however, it says the software is up to date... where did the ICS update go? Thanks.

I also took the ICS OTA update while my Xoom was 'rooted'.
- Wanted to see what would happen... and I also got the 'sick' android with '!'. Was more/less expecting it to fail though.
Workaround is to go back to stock/locked and then let the Xoom update itself into ICS (via OTA). Takes a few updates getting there.
Here's what I did:
Going back to stock:
--------------------------
1. Plug in your USB cord
2. Turn off your Xoom (Vol-Up + Power)
3. Boot into fastboot (Vol-Down + Power)
4. On your computer, open up a command prompt, and type the following:
fastboot flash boot <path to boot.img>
fastboot flash system <path to system.img>
fastboot flash recovery <path to recovery.img>
fastboot flash userdata <path userdata.img>
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock
fastboot reboot
NOTE: The images came direct from Xoom (motodev)
An easier way... (for me at least) was to jump over to a custom ROM - from xda.
- I also 'wiped' the Xoom prior to loading the new ROM (per instructions).
Now running EOS IML74K Nightly 61 and getting better battery life as a result.

Thanks, and is the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049485
the right place for the stock images?
My xoom being a wifi only, I think the HWI69 should be right? Thanks.

I got mine direct:
http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/
MZ604_HWI69.zip
Build HWI69 for US Retail
MD5 Sum: 3f52762e56474070fa71bdf34ba9afd1
Requires that you sign-up to "motodev"
Assuming you already have the toolkit and USB drivers (since you rooted).
It'll take a few updates before you get to ICS. And, I think Xoom (stock) still has some issue with SDCards. I had to go back to original just to get CWM re-loaded - though I think CWM has an update that doesn't require SDCard access (it's late).
- I have a US Xoom, wifi only (refurb deal from NewEgg).

If you have unlocked your device then don't do the OTA updates as they have a chance of bricking your device...
I would recommend you to flash a recovery image (which you might have already done) then flash TeamEOS's rom onto your xoom. It works wonders on mine.

Stuck at Motorola Dual-Core? [Wifi-Only]

Hiya,
After dealing with a half-bricked Xoom, I did some research on this problem and found a solution.
If in any case, you happen to get stuck on the "Motorola Dual-Core Technology"
Solution to this (For the MZ604, One-Click rooted):
MZ604 Stock .imgs Download: http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/
*Make sure you have fastboot in the same directory as your adb for easy access*
1. Plug in your USB cord
2. Turn off your Xoom (Vol-Up + Power)
3. Boot into fastboot (Vol-Down + Power)
4. On your computer, open up a command prompt, and type the following:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock
-or-
Code:
fastboot flash boot <path to boot.img>
fastboot flash system <path to system.img>
fastboot flash recovery <path torecovery.img>
fastboot flash userdata <path userdata.img>
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock
5. Reboot the Xoom
Code:
fastboot reboot
6. There you go, back to stock!
On the real though, if you can get to Fastboot (or even the Moto "Android Recovery" state), you're not THAT bricked you've got to relock and go back to out-of-box; just keep a known-good boot.img around somewhere.
You just saved my life!
Thanks for sharing OP.
I take it this method is the same for 3.1?
I hope this works. Although, I can't turn my xoom off. It also appears that my computer will not recognize my device when it is plugged in. In addition, I can't turn off my Xoom? It just reboots... so I can't enter fastboot mode.
I just posted this in a new thread.

I tried reverting back to stock using the "one click" root/unroot tool that was the first to come out for the Xoom.
Anyway, I tried the unroot process and everything was going fine, until something occurred. Now, it tries to boot up and says at the Moto Dual Core Technology screen, "Failed to boot LNX 0x0004 // Starting RSD mode 2".

You can still enter fastboot if you xoom won't shut off. Just hold the appropria oncete buttons as it reboot. Happened to me last night upgrading to 3.1. It. Wouldn't shut down at all. Once I got into fastboot my computer saw it and I was able to fix
Honestly, I almost went through all of this last night when my WIFI Xoom got stuck in a boot loop.
However, I noticed that when my recovery went to flash the new 3.1 file, I felt like it didn't take as long as it should have. The file was the right size and all and it even said that everything installed successfully, but it just kept boot looping regardless of trying over and over. So I went ahead and re-downloaded the 3.1 file and repeated the steps to flash it and everything worked.
So, before you spend a whole lot of time restoring your Xoom, simply re-download the files and try it one more time. It worked for me.

Thanks! Finally have some hope to recovering. I'll post steps I took later once I get this damn thing fixed.
hmmm... I'm in fastboot supposedly and tried to flash boot.img but it seems to be stuck at <waiting for device>
This happen to anyone else?
After search seems like a driver issue, but I have installed the drivers... I was previous rooted, so I know I have the drivers. Just to be sure, I ran the MotoHelper again. I don't understand. It's just seeing my device on the "Starting Fastboot protocol support."

Yes. How did I fix it? I returned the xoom and had a new one two days later.
If the screen says something like "Entering RSD 2" then you're boned. The xoom won't be recognized in either the current state or in fastboot state by the computer, so no amount of commands will help. Even having the stock images doesn't help with that. Even RSDLite can't see the xoom in that state.
There have been several reports of people just being honest to Motorola and them fixing the device under the warranty.
Hmm honesty. I'll give it a shot.

Is the final OEM lock necessary? It's quite a pain as your userdata gets wiped if you unlock it...
I was stuck on bootloop, with unrecognised device, through adb was able to get back into clockwork recovery somehow at first boot, think twice down volume? Could be wrong.
I was able tto rreflash zip 3.1 over thet top again.
sry if this is different and unhelpful, bu imagine things are pretty desperate if you are considering returning the device

You were likely in RSD 3, which is recognized by the computer. RSD 2 means adb and fastboot cannot see the device at all, so no flashing images is possible.
There's several states that all look very similar. Because some success was had with one doesn't mean it works for all. Motorola recognizes and is telling users that, in this state, the device needs to be sent back to them.
Can someone help us wifi xoom. Im stuck on the motorola screen and have a lil experience. I can fast boot reboot/fastboot device and it work but cant get the files from the hwi69 to fastboot on to it. I think im entering the commands wrong. Any advice would be appreciated

Very good info to get into fastboot protocol:
Much thanks for the info. Worked like a champ. On an updated 3.2.1 XOOM I did an unlock, re-locked the wrong way, soft bricked, unbricked back to locked state. Finally followed your steps applied stock files and XOOM is re-locked and stock rocking back at 3.01. I needed to do all this to make sure I could get it back to stock in case it goes back to BB in 2 weeks. I was lucky enough to find one at a BB just not sure if I'll keep it. I plan on trying out some roms plus I heard Motorola is planning on doing an ICS push to the XOOM. ICS is very nice. It runs great on my unlocked Verizon G-Nex.. Again Thanks..
This post not only saved my half-bricked non-rooted Xoom, but also let me flash it from the Singapore firmware (bought if from Amazon, don't ask lol) to the regular USA firmware so that I can properly root it!
Thank you so very much!!

[Q] [solved] Can a stock ROM 3.2 be rooted at all?

Hey all,
I read through quite a few threads here and am a bit confused.
I updated my UK Xoom 3G (MZ601) via OTA to 3.2 (H.6.5-17-3) a good while ago.
Recently, I got interested into rooting the device. So I launched the recovery mode on my Xoom (just to see if it works before I start flashing anything) and sadly, I get the green bot of ! there.
edit: solution in this thread!
So for now:
From my understanding here, there's only one way to fix this using ADB:
1) unlock bootloader
2) flash stock xoom dev rom (that would be H.6.1-38-1)
3) flash cwm
4) root
Even if all these steps were correct, wouldn't that mean I can impossibly OTA update to 3.2 as the device is already rooted (read somewhere it will cause issues when trying to update a rooted device)?
Even if I updated via OTA anyway it would overwrite CWM, wouldn't it?
I'd prefer to have a latest stock ROM + root as end result without a green bot interfering. Any advice is appreciated!
If I'm not mistaken you can root your device, using one of the Universal Root Tools on xda's xoom android development section.
I also rooted mine, using Xoot, I think it was called. Which will convert it into a GED device (wifi-only)
Or you can use Lord AIO's tool, which also worked fine, and then you can flash Team Eos' 2.0 Umts-everest (EU 3G) ROM over it.
Both have worked well for me.
Good luck! And let me know if you have any questions left!
found this that would do the trick for sure. As always, you're not the only one

First time rooting, few questions.

ACTUALLY I GOT THE ANSWER TO THESE QUESTIONS (ignore this thread)
I've been reading through this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
Question 1: When they say wipe everything, do they mean media too? (like music and such) Because when I had a samsung vibrant, they also said that but it never wiped media.
Question 2: Will I have to run a nandroid backup if this is my first time rooting, or will it be unnecessary?
Question 3: After finishing doing everything (unlocking and rooting)
do I just directly flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1484770 or is there something I need to do beforehand?
Also, in the guide, it says something about green android of ! if you have received an OTA. Which I have received many from Moto before. Will I have to download the original motorola files (HC or ICS, I'm currently on ICS)? If so, where do I put it? I'm confused

There may be something wrong with my instructions...they've gotten convoluted over time. Try one of the other guides in General..there are a couple of newer ones that might work better. Mine still gives a lot of information but I think I'll retire it 'cause I don't want to cause issues.
I recently rooted and flashed a rom on my xoom. I'm a simple point and click windows user and I didn't have much trouble, so it's not that hard to do.
[HOW TO][UPDATED GUIDE] Unlocking & Rooting your XOOM!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477024
is the thread I used. Follow the instructions exactly and read the entire thread before you start, it'll save you a few headaches. This'll get you in (I think) ICS with superuser and all that jazz. If you want a rom, like me, then you'll have to head over to the development forum and take your pick. I'm running EOS 2.0, still deciding what to do with my xoom atm.
I wish I'd known of this thread last night. I struggled for several hours to root. It finally did. I also got the rom installed.

I started out with the standard 3.2 on my Xoom Wifi
with a nagging system message to update (I am guessing 3.2.2)
So I followed thread 1249798 and now am unlocke & rooted!
I am also using Recovery: Eos Recovery R6
I still get the nagging system message to update.
I would like to load a custom ROM, probably Moray.
My questions are this:
1. Will the Nagging system update message cause a
problem loading a custom ROM?
2. I could use the process as described in thread 1249798
to load the ROM, but I have read that since I am rooted
I could use Quick Boot app. Is this true? What about the
ROM Manager app, could I use this to load Moray? What is
the difference?
3. Since my base is 3.2 I am guessing I cannot load any
EOS ICS Rom's, is this correct? I need to bring my base
to 4.0 right?
4. Both Hammerhead and Moray state that they are both:
"Pre rooted with su and Superuser". Does this mean I did
not have to root my Xoom, I could have just loaded either
of these Roms and become rooted?
5. I have read some comments about:
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
If I remove this file, will this stop the nagging System Update message?
6. Do I need to back anything up prior to loading a ROM?
Thanks!
Still with that, you can flash TEAM EOS ROM ICS. just boot into recovery and flash the TEAM EOS ROM. Mine was 3.2.1 as well. GOOD LUCK

Urgent: Xoom stuck on boot screen

Hey guys.
Basically:
My brother has a Motorola Xoom 32GB MZ604. He tried to root it but it was unsuccessful. After reboot of the failed root, it will now get stuck on the M boot screen and not move, there's no loop as such, it will literally stay on until it runs out of battery or is turned off by pressing buttons.
Any ideas what's happened and how we can fix it?
He took it back and they want £46 to put new software on.
Thanks
Oli
Can you still enter recovery??
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
I believe he can but he said he's already wiped it? I'll try again though when he gets home tonight from work.
I had the same issue when I first tried to root my xoom. Here is what you do:
1) take out the external sd card. And thru pc , put on it the new recovery image and put it back into xoom.
2) search my posts on how to root mz601. I know yours is mz604. But it is the same procedure. I will post steps for you soon.
Sent from my MZ601 using Tapatalk 2
There you go. Step by step.
First, download the below and put them onto your xoom internal and external SD card. Put them under /mnt/sdcard for internal sd, and under the root of your external sd card.
To download:
• Get the Motorola USB drivers to your laptop: http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/
• Get the Android SDK to your laptop: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
• Recovery Image: http://goo.im/devs/teameos/recoverie...ecovery-r6.img
• GAPPS: http://goo.im/gapps, your GAPPs would be: gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
• ROM: get the latest release for mz604 from here. http://goo.im/devs/teameos/roms/nightlies/wingray/
Steps:
1. Power off your XOOM device.
2. Press and hold the volume down button while pressing the power button at the same time. Note: Even if your xoom starts again, just keep the button pressed until you see "Starting fastboot protocol" on the screen.
3. Connect Xoom to your computer via USB.
4. Open a ‘Command Prompt’ or ‘Terminal’ window on your computer in your sdk/tools folder. This is the sdk you downloaded above.
5. unlock your xoom and flash the recovery image. The recovery image should be in your current working directory where you have command line navigated to: Type:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery eos-recovery-r6.img
fastboot reboot adb
reboot recovery
Now, you have your device unlocked and recovery installed.
Reboot your xoom by selecting the option "reboot system now" from recovery. you can navigate up and down using the volume buttons. Once an option is highlighted, press the power button to select, you will still have your old ROM.
To flash the other ROM downloaded above,
1. Boot into recovery by:
i. As soon as you hit the reboot command above, you should see a Motorola logo appear. Wait 3 seconds and tap the Volume down button and the words Android Recovery should appear on the screen. When you see that, tap the Volume up button and you’ll boot into recovery.
2. From within Recovery, perform wipe data, wipe cache, and go to advanced, wipe dalvik cache and battery stats. Don't worry, if the ROM and GAPPs are deleted, which should not be the case, you will have them on your external sd card
Note: wipe data will delete your stuff on the xoom. It would be great if you backup your files that you need to your external sd card before you start any of this procedure.
3. In recovery, navigate to install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sd card and select the EOS ROM you copied to the root of the SD card. Once the files are flashed, DO NOT reboot afterwards. Hold on.
4. Again, from Recovery, choose install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sd card and select the GAPPs you copied to the root of the SD card.
Then hit reboot system now. It will take 2 - 3 minutes for the first reboot. Setup your google account. and you are good to go.
Later reboots will be much faster (around 40 - 50 seconds).

if it's getting to the splash screen then just as you turn it on, whack it into fastboot then you'll be able to flash new recovery or flash back to stock.

Go here: http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/ to get the stock images to flash in fastboot to get the xoom back to factory conditions. It's normally the last resort, but the most successful. You may need to sign up for an account, but it is free.
Right guys basically i want my xoom to be complete stock what is the best way to do this. can i still use the above steps but by using the default motorola software.. it looked like it was using differnt firmware, and one of the links didnt work. sorry i really dont have a clue what to do and need my xoom back its been away for 3 weeks now
yes you can.. just flash the stock OS for it and you are good to go again.
and whats the best way to do this. sorry im not too sure about rooting on the xooms etc i used that poxy one click root which by the looks of things lots of people have had problems with it.
Rooting is pretty straight forward steps. Use the steps I provided you above if you want. If you are looking to flash stock rom, you still need recovery and stock rom to be flashed.

My mz601 is stuck at booting it keeps going off and booting again
My steps to a factory reset Xoom Wingray
My Xoom Wingray also crashed and was stuck in the boot animation. I still use my Xoom as my alarm clock and music player with multimedia dock. I had to put the Xoom in the drawer as there was no way to turn it off, it would just reboot back to the flashing animation. I was surprised that it wasn't dead by morning and it was still in the boot loop. So I wanted to revert back to the stock ROMs so this is what I just did. This is assuming you have nothing installed on your PC so from scratch. I actually just went through this a hour ago so I am still in the very last step.
First download and install the following:
-Minimal Android SDK from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
-Motorola drivers from http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-...tware_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Drivers
Now you need the original images:
You can try to get it from the source here, https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/rom-images , but I had to request access to the files and was impatient.
I found the original images here instead, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64412362&postcount=10
You will need to find the original images for your device, the source in the first link should be able to help you.
Flashing Instructions
I would recommend having the power cord attached throughout this, but if your Xoom is fully charged it should be ok.
Assuming you installed the minimal SDK in the default folder, C:\Program Files (x86)\ Minimal ADB and Fastboot, unzip the individual images (boot.img, recovery.img, system.img and userdata.img) into this folder. If you installed into some other folder unzip there instead.
Now you need to put the Xoom into fastboot mode. Press the VOL-UP and Power to reboot, but then keep holding the VOL-UP. You should end up in fastboot mode.
Plug the Xoom into your PC.
Open a CMD window into the fastboot directory. If you installed the Minimal Fastboot from above you can simply go Start>Minimal ADB and Fastboot>Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
Type "fastboot devices"
Type "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
Type "fastboot flash system system.img"
Type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Type "fastboot flash userdata userdata.img"
Type "fastboot erase cache"
Type "fastboot oem lock"
You can see the responses I got in the attached image. Once complete the Xoom rebooted with the original Honeycomb OS and then I had to wait for all of the OTA updates to be pushed. This has taken several hours and now it is updating all of the stock Google apps.
Help with my MZ601
Please, I need help with my MZ601.
A friend who recently passed willed his MZ601 GSM/Wifi to me. I do not know a thing about it; however, I have read a couple of posts. I gathered from these posts that the MZ601 would need to be flashed with a new ROM, especially as when I powered it on, it stopped at the big 'M' logo.
I have checked so many posts online here and found links to many Roms and Gapps, but none is working.
Please, I would be glad if anyone could help me with the following:
(a) MZ601 GSM/Wifi ROM - whether Stock or Custom ROM.
(b) Also remember that I am a idiot; hence, I will need a step-by-step guide on what to do.
Thank you very much.

[Q] Did I really hard brick my TF300T?

Today I felt ambitious and tried to install a new JB rom (AOSPA 4.2.2). The instructions said that if I had 3 icons I would be on JB bootloader and that I would need to upgrade to the latest TWRP 2.5.0.0 (I was on 2.4.4.0). Well, what I missed is the fact that there were two different versions of 2.5.0.0 (one specifically for JB 4.2) and of course I flashed to wrong one.
Now when the tablet boots it goes straight to recovery and asks for a PW (I don't know the password and never set one). I can select cancel which lets me into the main menu but none of the functions actually have write access. Nothing mounts or lets me gain access to the internal memory. When I try to reboot it immediately goes back to recovery, never letting me get back into fastboot to install the correct version.
Reading some forums and doing some other google search I don't find anyone with exactly the same problem, but it seems that I cannot get out of this mess. I know that nvflash is out of question since that is not working on JB yet.
If anyone has encountered a similar issue or knows how I could potentially get fastboot to trigger again so I can flash the correct version of recovery, that would be a great start.
Thanks !!

Great, That is exactly what happened. Looks like I'll be looking for a new tablet.
I am wondering if the Google Nexus 10 would have a similar risk of bricking. Guess it's time to do some research.
Thanks.

You may want to check & confirm that fastboot will not flash (you don't get the blue bar on tab when flashing) before looking for a new tab, although this "fastboot flash brick" issue results about 90% of the time you may be lucky and be in that 10% that does not.
You should be able to access fastboot using the "adb reboot-bootloader" command while in recovery, if pc does not pick-up device for adb in recovery have a look here and follow on from the device manager part.
When you get to the bootloader menu have a look at the text in the top left and confirm which 4.2 bootloader version your on, either 10.6.1.8 or 10.6.1.15.3 - then download the correct twrp version for that bootloader and see if you can flash it via fastboot.
If that does not work, which will most likely not would you like to try something for me? which may or may not work, just an idea.
Download this file, unzip it & copy the bootloader.bin file in your android-sdk/platform-tools folder.
Boot back to fastboot using the adb reboot-bootloader command and try
Code:
fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash bootloader bootloader.bin
If this works and does not freeze the tab then
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
If the tab does reboot to this command then check the bootloader version here in the bootloader menu and if it has worked it should say 10.4.2.20 in the text in the top left of the screen.
If by chance this has worked then you should also now have 4 icons in the bootloader as you will now be back on a 4.1 bootloader.
If this does work at all let me know for next steps.

Followed your google usb instructions to make ADB work. Executed the bootloader command and was greeted with the three icons (4.2 bootloader I believe). Then flashed the correct TWRP 2.5 4.2 (no blue progress bar) and waited for the command prompt to show successful write. Rebooted and when recovery started up, showed nothing was different. Still requires me to enter a PW and none of the mounts work.
Then followed your bootloader update instructions and while it said it was successful I only get three icons when in fastboot.
Should I try the older TWRP that I had on there before (2.4.4.0) to see if that at least lets me back in?

Miraculously the tablet will allow me now to cold boot into the previous rom. That at least makes it usable again, but it probably means that I am stuck on this. Also strange is that the tablet now no longer is recognized as a USB device. I cannot access the internal ram??
Under 'About Tablet' my build # shows 10.6.1.14.4/US DEODEX. Not sure if this might help in fixing the recovery issue?
Anyway I am glad I don't have to spend money to get a replacement, but sure hope I can fix the existing recovery image issue.
So tried to flash back the previous version of TWRP and it will not. Even though the fastboot command prompt shows a successful flash nothing appears to be changed, which refers to the original issue that states that I am stuck on whatever rom is on this tablet.
Is the reason I cannot flash back an older or correct version because there is a permission issue? Is there something I can do directly from within the rom after it boots up, like the shell emulator?
