hi all
i am trying to do a factory reset to my nexus S but i faced some problems, the phone cant be reset to factory settings. my phone is on 2.3.4 and is rooted
i had tried the following steps
1) going to Settings>Privacy>Reset phone
after i confirm to wipe everything, the phone rebooted and it will stuck at the "Google" logo (in words) with the fastboot unlock logo at the bottom. i took off the battery to shutdown the phone (anything i press at this moment does not get any response from the phone) and start it up again. once it is started (it get pass the google word logo if i do it this way) all my application and even my themes are still there
2) shutting down the phone. press volume up + power button. choose recovery
same thing happen as above. it cant get pass the google word logo and once i restart the phone by plugging out the batt, it went back to previous state without wiping anything
i search online guide and also youtube video and all of them shows that the recovery will bring you to a android with a exclamation mark (in the triangle) but i cant get to the screen. i had left my phone there for 30 minutes but it is still stuck at the google logo.
Please help

thanks for the feedback. now i am trying to flash it but i faced "adb device not found" error
ok done
managed to flash it back to an older version and everything works now
thanks a lot for your help! cheers
Make sure to update it eventually because you could run into issues when flashing stuff if your recovery isn't up to date.
No problem!

ok here is what happened yesterday
i was on ROM: codename android 3.6.0 and decided to re-install it because somehow it was force-closing applications
then went into recovery
data factory reset all
wiped cache partition
wiped dalvik cache
then wnet to install zip from sdcard
and choose Codename-Android-3.6.0-NS.zip and selected "yes"
the installation started but unfortunately was aborted. (dont know why?)
i went back and did data factory reset once again
and accidently pressed "reboot system now"
and after that it restarted and was stuck on google logo for hours . not showing any activity
i tried pulling off the battery and try to restart again and also tried going back to recovery but no luck (same old google logo boot screen)
please help me get back to recovery so that i can install a new rom ... please please help

see if you have free space on your phone for the error , as for the booting in to recovery :
1.remove battery
2.reinsert baterry
3.hold volume up + power
4.chose recovery (vol up/down to scroll and pover button to select)
4.wait for phone to boot in to recovery
Fastboot boot recovery name of recovery.img
If you unlocked the right way and not some lame one click crap.

i have tried this procedure already but no luck .. the phone is not taking me to recovery.. when you power on while pressing the vol-up button. "Google" logo comes up and thats it .. nothing happens after that..
Hi Guys, I'm in a bit of a panic with my Nexus.
Looked in my pocked yesterday and the phone was randomly in a boot loop, just getting up to the google logo, then rebooting.. this was weird as the phone was working throughout the day. The day before I had installed Faux v5 (and I have cataclysms rom)..
Followed the instructions from [TUTORIAL] How to flash a factory image | Return to stock | Unroot your Nexus 5
to rever to stock image.
I run the flash-all.bat (using method 1 from Post1), which seems to complete successfully (writes to the device and it reboots a few times), but after this the phone gets stuck at the Google logo,
I cant get to the final two steps (which is wipe data/factory data reset), because in the step before where I select recovery, it just boots back to the google logo - no recovery. It will stay there all day, unless I hold power & volume down, then I can get back to the bootloader.
Since this failed (I have flashed the flash-all batch twice using different usb ports... but no joy.
If I run the fastboot device info, - it correctly shows my bootloader is unlocked...
I have tried to relock it, but hit the same problem, (if I run the fastboot boot c:\twrp.img etc) - it just wont boot into a recovery..
I am at a loss.. any help would be greatly appreciated...
I have also tried flashing a custom recovery (twrp & cwm), and I have the same problem with both.. they flash, but then I can get to the bootloader, but cant launch a recovery.. just gets stuck in a bootloop...
THANKS!
reboot bootloader (power + vol down)
go into recovery (the red triangle)
open up the recovery menu (power + vol up)
wipe cache
The problem I am having is I cant get into recovery.
I get into fastboot mode, I then hit volume up twice (to change from start > to recovery >).
I then hit power. But instead of a red! I get the Google Logo.. and I am back where I started.
Volume up & power does nothing, all I can do is Vol down & power, then I am back at the bootloader.. no recovery..
First of all, I have gone through every similar post, but none helped and so created a new post
Device: Nexus 5
Tried to flash: Stock 5.0 image from Google's website
Bootloader unlocked: Yes
Method used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701
Tried step 1, it gave an error: archive does not contain system.sig, but it still went ahead with the process and when tried to boot into recovery to perform a wipe data/factory reset, it showed a small Android logo with a red triangle and exclamation mark.
So I tried step two and manually flashed all the files in the order and in the end (after erasing cache), I tried booting into recovery again and got the same thing. Android logo with a red triangle and exclamation mark inside it. I thought the recovery wouldn't have flashed properly, I booted into bootloader again and manually flashed recovery.img and tried. Still the same. WIthout doing a wipe data/factory reset, I do not think the phone will boot up properly. What am I to do here? Stuck in this and cannot use the phone at all. Any help at all is welcomed. Thanks in advance!
Any questions, please ask me.
Edit: I tried locking and then unlocking the bootloader and tried step 2, while booting into the recovery mode, instead of the red triangle, I got the standing Android logo with the blue sphere sort of thing revolving in it. What do I do next when I see that Android logo? Thank you

The first boot takes a LONG time. Just let it go for a while.

So, I did try as you said. I left it but it kept booting for more than 20 minutes. What to do now?
Same thing happened to me.. You just have to do a factory wipe and then reboot..
When you get to the screen with dead android, with the power button pressed, press vol up key once and you will be in the recovery screen. Do a factory wipe from the screen and reboot..
It should be working now..

Incredible. That, worked! I did a rookie mistake by pressing both at the same time which led to nothing. Got it up and running. Thank you everyone for their inputs, couldn't have done without it
The factory wide and reset does not work for me. Stills tuck at the boot animation.
I recently had the same issue with my Nexus 5 and have been back and forth with Google Play support to resolve the issue with no success on that front. However I did get my issue resolved, which was caused by a corrupt /persist filesystem. What I did was this:
Flash CWM Recovery
Reboot into Recovery
notice that /persist isn't mounted, try mounting it and it will fail
Launch and ADB shell
run 'e2fcsk /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist'
let it fix any errors found
try to mount the /persist partition, it should work now
(Optional) reboot to bootloader, flash whichever recovery you want or stay with CWM
reboot into system, all should be fine now
After successfully repairing and mounting /persist within CWM Recovery I powered off and just flashed the stock 5.0 image from the Google Factory Images page.
A special thanks to bitdomo for his information here which ultimately fixed my issues:

Hi there, having just the old casual phone crisis. I was running cyanogenmod 12.1 for awhile and decided to finally upgrade to a nougat 7.1 build.
I tried using this one https://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/rom-dark-rom-t3492150 using adb sideload as I had tried a earlier one and the gapps messed up so I wasn't able to put twrp back on the phone. The rom said it had installed successfully but I wasn't able to sideload gapps, I kept getting an error status 255. I went ahead and just tried to load the rom without gapps and see if I could install it slowly through APKs. I managed to get past the initial android load and the services started up, and it got in an endless crash loop because the phone service wouldn't start. So I went to try and flash another rom and was going to delete the cache. When I went to delete the cache the phone hung for about an hour so I tried to just reset it into recovery mode again.
Now when I hold the power button and volume down key to into fastboot mode I can. I have access to the initial screen with the four options, but when I try to start recovery mode or start the phone my screen goes black, and it'll flash the dead android symbol with the error saying unable to mount cache, it only flashes it for like half a second then goes black and repeats every 10-15 seconds.
I tried holding power down, doing volume up, and letting go to do a hard factory reset but it does nothing. I also can't seem to access the adb sideloading anymore, I'm very scared that it's hard bricked, is there anything I can do at all to fix this.
Flash a new version of the recovery via fastboot. Then do a full wipe. After that install the ROM only! Reboot recovery (not system but recovery) then reflash the ROM (no wipe) and add everything else. Hope this helps you out.
The phone may not boot the ROM without wiping data if installing a 7.1 ROM over a 5.1.1 ROM.
I tried rooting my brand new Mate 9. I unlocked the bootloader, but the wipe that followed failed for some reason. In the eRecovery there's no option to Wipe Data / Factory Reset and when I try to log in at the start screen, the keyboard is not showing up, so I can't even log in. Tried wiping through ADB, but it doesn't even see the device. Any other way to wipe it, so I can proceed with installing TWRP and rooting this sucker. Thanks in advance!
You can boot to fastboot and flash twrp.
While the usb plugged in,hold volume down and power, when the phone vibrate remove power button and keep pressing volume down.
For stock recovery, remove the usb, hold volume up and power and when you see the logo, remove power and keep pressing volume up.
You can copy a keyboard apk on ur sd card and install when you are in the system, just skip the log in screens.
Thanks! I managed to install TWRP and boot to it to do a factory reset, thinking that it will resolve my login issue. Now I'm stuck in bootloop.
And if I try to boot into TWRP again by pressing Volume Up + Volume Down + Power it boots me into eRecovery that wants to perform an update, which after 5% fails saying: The update package does not exist.
So I can't even get back to TWRP nor the system.
Any advice to resolve this?

well to boot into recovery just use vol up+power and release once u see the huawei logo.btw when your factory reset fail during unlocking BL you can manually boot into the system and reset thru settings again.
Never do factory reset via twrp. It does not support huawei's data partition.
To avoid bootloop, just flash stock recovery and do factory reset with it. You need flash additional stock zips to restore additional apps and themes.
I had exactly the same problem as you. After rooting and start wipe, the factory reset seems had not finished well and the phone booted to lock screen with password field, but without keyboard...
Only procure that worked for me was rebranding the phone and installing another full room using Funky Huawei. Yes I know it is a paid service but I believe you will be happy to know it can help you.
Good luck
