Have 2 lines, adding one new phone? - General Questions and Answers

So i have 2 lines with Tmobile. One which i currently upgrade to SG2. The other one is my wife who still has Mytouch 3G 1.5V. Her upgrade wont take effect until another 5 months, which sucks. She very much liked HTC Sensation, she has no need for Amaze or SG2, since they Sensation is powerful enough to handle her every day use. I was looking at EBay and noticed a few new going for $350, way cheaper if she was to buy them from Tmobile.
My question is, would this be a good idea? What are the steps i should take if I buy the phone to have Tmobile set up 4G and everything it needs? I know i wont get any warranty by Tmobile, only by the maker. But are there any other downside to this? upside?

The upside is you wouldn't be in a contract. I believe you would only need to pop in the sim and set up the APN settings to match the ones on your SII. Just make sure you are buying a T-mo sensation not an AT&T sensation

Htc vivid or sgs2 skyrocket

I'm returning my atrix 2 possibly this Sunday in order to buy one of these two phones.
Which one would you suggest and why please?
I'm leaning towards the vivid as I like sense more than touchwiz but once the roms start rolling in that won't matter much.
Thank you for your input.

I'm thinking for upgrade also. I'm in the same boat. Do you have unlimited data on att? Is there any word on LTE plans? I'm mainly interested if we'll be grandfathered in LTE unlimited.

I don't have unlimited data which sucks. I wish I could tell you that you would be grandfathered in on lte but I don't even think att knows right now since it's barely out. As far as I've read the same rates apply for the 2gb plan and the 200mb plan. That's about all I know so far and I'm sure if you call am att store they won't be able to help you much.
So, which phone are you leaning towards? And why.

In my opinion, you should go for HTC Vivid...
For now I like the Skyrocket better, still not decided yet. I've had HTC before and I loved it...
Specs-wize, except the screen resolution, my vote goes to Sammy mainly for:
- faster CPU (1.5 vs 1.2), and, for what i've read are both snapdragons,
- battery (1850 vs 1600)
- 2.0mp front camera,
- NFC,
- super amoled (if you're a fan), unfortunatelly only 800x480, which, by today's standards is quite low (most high-end phones have qHD (960x540), nevermind the idevice or the nexus galaxy)
- touchwiz (maybe?)
On the other hand, HTC:
- good history of building quality,
- qHD screen
- the camera is stated to have an aperture f2.2 28mm wide-angle lens for low light photos (definitelly have to try it to see), and 60fps recording
- don't think the $50 difference really matters, but its a '+'
- HTC sense
Now: some I also want to see some other 'minor' details, like the HSDPA chipset (I know they both normally have LTE, but if they both have 21.1 or the older 14.4 mbps), don't think ATT will have LTE widespread soon. Also form-factor, weight, size, design, this things I will only see inside att's store
Still not decided yet though

[Q] Samsung Captivate Glide

I'm planning to buy a new phone and this phone comes up as one of the few that I am thinking of. I do need it to be unlocked and rooted...
Any developers thinking of picking up this phone? Or this phone is dead on the water?
Thanx.
I actually just bought one last night, and was wondering the same thing.
I'm a *nix guru (coming from an n900) and would be happy to start playing around, but I am new to Android.
I haven't been able to find the stock firmware yet, which makes me nervous; even if I (soft)brick, I'm hosed.
If anyone manages to find the stock Samsung rom (or even the Rogers one), let me know, and I'll get started rooting.
I picked up the Rogers version, Galaxy S Glide, and Im pretty excited to see some custom roms for it.
Also, where is the best place to post and find info about this phone? I dont think there is a dedicated section on XDA yet.
Update: I actually looked around XDA and found the "Request a Forum" thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301121
Anyone interested in this device should help out with a request!
We need to somehow get the mods to make a Samsung Captivate Glide forum before anything will happend...
Although for it to warrant a forum I'm guessing we need a lot of people (that has the phone) and developers that want to do something to the phone.
We have one person for developer here, I guess we need more?
And we need to contact a higher person on XDA....
Anyone knows anyone?

The knowledge to root/hack a blessing or curse?

So a couple of months ago I purchased my first android phone (my nexus) to specifically root and flash. I tried many roms and have had a jolly good time here at xda.
Now here is the small dilemma that I'm facing with all this new found knowledge of rooting phones. Ever since I rooted my gfs inc2, she goes around telling everyone that her bf(me) is the one to call for smartphone tech.
Yesterday I just rooted and flashed miui on her coworkers Droid 2 global. Btw that phone was a ***** to work on, I had to go to read like 5 different forums to get the corrects steps to flash gb roms.
And now just today my gf is asking me if I could jailbreak her brothers new iPhone 4.
Yeah I'm in no way mad about people asking me for help but I guess I'm now the phone guru that everyone relies on. I do enjoy working on different phones, and flashing roms are always fun.
I'm wondering if anyone else on xda has turned into the go-to-guy for smart phone related tech?

Yes.
I have been in this position. Mostly due to my root and rom changing need. Always people asking me to jailbreak their iphone/ipod (Easy if you ask on google, aye?) Currently I am on ICS(Android 4.0) on Samsung Galaxy S2.
Thanks for your time.

Galaxy nexus or wait?

Currently owner of sensation but i do want a galaxy nexus because i am an app developer. But thn i see rumors like htc edge witch looks even more awesome.
What to freakin do: D
sent from Sensation with awesome cm7!!!!
Senny isnt bad, if you really like the Galaxy Nexus and can afford it, then go get it, its a nice piece of work, the screen rocks!
You'll be ok with the Senny though, so maybe you can wait for more time, new phones come everyday, if you like something, then take it, or you can wait for something even nicer(quad-core! )
Although, having ics out of the box is a plus point, and as you tell you are an app dev, so it'll help you make newer and better apps, but your phone would get an official update soon.
There is ALWAYS something better just around the corner, you could just wait forever for the next best phone and never buy anything!
wait for galaxy s3

Always get the Nexus. New hardware comes out every month but only the Nexus will run the latest stable version of Android on day one. As a consumer that's great but as a developer that's essential. Plus Sense on Honeycomb is crap and will probably be just as much on ICS.

Suggestions for my new dev phone?

Right now my dev phone is a Samsung Captivate...but my carrier is Verizon! Anybody suggest any Verizon smart phones I should use just for developing but I would also be able to use in the future? Running my stock Droid X2 as a daily user and can't risk to mess that thing up. Comment with suggestions guys! Thanks!

Maybe a Droid 4? Seems like there's good connectivity for development in that all the Motos use the same base and that's what you're already used to.
Otherwise I'd wait and see if VZ gets a worthwhile HTC or Samsung in the near future.

What are those Droid 4s going for on the net? Because I'm definitely not getting it through verizon...lol.

You should either wait for S3 or the new ZTE/Huawei, cheap phones with quad-core

HTC Rezound is the way to go. Its hardware is far superior to any other devices on Verizon's current lineup, it's got an unlocked bootloader, and we've had quite a few breakthroughs in getting AOSP, CM9, and Sense 4 ported over.
