[Q] SD Card not showing up in file browser in 4.0.3 - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I upgraded to stock 4.0.3 posted by stachre and its running fine. Only issue is that I can't browse to my SD card though my normal file browsers. I have tried ES file manager and root explorer. The SD card shows up fine when i plug my Xoom into my PC and also is recognized by CW Recovery console. So it seems like hardware wise everything is fine, but the OS just doesn't have it mounted to the file system for some reason.
I am pretty sure it was working right after upgraded to ICS so I'm not sure what could have happened. Can someone confirm if/where the SD card should be mounted in case i am just going insane? Also if there anything I can do short of reflashing the image?

how is the card formatted?

The card is mounted in the small slot within the same opening where a sim would go...on the top, toward the screen and to the left if looking at the front side of the Xoom. It should be able to slide in and click into place. Click it out and then back in to make sure it's seated properly. In the EOS ICS the micro sdcard will be at media/sdcard. In Honeycomb it was at mnt/external1. You may not be looking in the right place.

The card is definately seated correctly, i just used it to change over to EOS 1.0.0 image and CW had no issue seeing it. But stll no access to the SD card within the main OS. There is nothing in my media folder except an "audio" folder.

[Q] Internal Memory Card issues

Okay, I'm sorry if this should be in another forum, but I figured the minds in develpoment would have a better answer.
I have a G Tablet, running TnT lite 2.0.0 + 2.0.3 Sup, Launcher Pro, ES File Manager. I was trying to load some files onto the internal SD card using a standard USB connection to my laptop. It connected fine, I used the 'Mount SD Card' option that popped up in the notification section, and it appeard on my laptop fine.
The problem comes that I know the file structure of the External SD Card, Internal SD card, and System sections. So I KNOW I was looking at the Internal SD Card. I copied my files and deleted a txt file that was at the root of the card. Once I properly unmounted the card and checked it using ES Filemanager, none of the changes took place. My new files gone, and the deleted file still there and readable. So I pluged it back in, and the laptop shows the new files are where they should be and the txt file still gone. WTH?!?!
If I load the files the External SD (by removing it and moving them using a seperate SD reader), then transfer the files to the internal using ES File Manager, it works fine. I don't get it.
Okay, used the refresh option in Filemanager, nothing. Rebooted, now I can see the new files, but they have a 0 byte size. ??

Did you 'eject' the disk in Windows before unplugging the cable? Windows has been known to cache writes up and not perform the actual disk open until you eject or stop the device from the icon in the system tray. It caused me to lose some data on a jump drive, so ever since I make sure to force Windows to flush the cached operations by ejecting and waiting for it to tell me it is safe to remove.
The problem is 2.03. USB storage mode was broken with 2.03 and you will probably also notice some installed apps have vanished (another issue with 2.03).
Install 2.04 or the new and awesome 2.20. Both fix the problems. 2.20 is just as fast, but more stable than 2.03.

[Q] Preparing SD Card issue with SDCard2 (VeGAN Issue)?

Saw someone alude to a similar problem in another thread and claim they didn't have the same problem with TnT, but I can't find the thread again so...
Issue is that a reboot is just fine, but if the machine powers off, then when it comes up it give a "Preparing SD Card" message twice. Which I presume is once for the internal card, and once for the external.
The problem is that after it does that, all the files on my internal SD Card are fine, but SDCard2 has the file structure (all the directories and subdirectories are still there), but no files. Kind of makes using the external card a pain.
FWIW the external card is a Class 6 Kensington 16GB card.
If this "is" a Vegan issue, would I be better off going to Cyanogen, or is TnT and the Stock firmware the only choice to avoid this?
TIA!
VeGAN Issue
I experienced the same issue on my g tab running vegan 5.1 beta today. I have a patriot micro sd card for what it's worth. I guess I'll rely more on internal memory for now...
It's a well documented bug with the TNT build used by Vegan. You can prevent this be creating an empty file called ".nomedia" in the root of your /sdcard2 folder.
You can do this using es file explorer by browsing to /sdcard2, press Menu> New > File and name it ".nomedia" without the quotes and this will prevent your files from being deleted.
Hi there!
I was wondering these days...which i have lived the very same situation about my G Tablet and a sdcard2 erasing issue.
Is this a Vegan only issue?
If i replace for another type of ROM, will i have the same?? And which rom would be strongly recommended these days?
I have been loving Vegan so far.....im with my tablet for 2 weeks only and i really have chosen GTablet for the powerfull hardware and customization options related to the Roms....Vegan runs flawlessly and its a nice system version... but as someone else has already mentioned, its a pain to have to deal with this type of card being erased.
Btw i have done the .nomedia file, but creating it through windows 7 DOS command line..... it worked for 1 reboot.... on the second time i turned gtablet off and got it back on...... the files were again gone, dead, wipped out lol
Any help would be great....
Thanks
I had the same issues. I used RootExplorer to create the .nomedia file in the root of the sdcard AND in the folder with my movies. No more erased data, going on 2 weeks now.

[Q] How do i access my Micro SD on Tiamat Kernel

I believe I see it when browsing on my zoom under MicroSD folder however I would like to drop videos onto it but cannot figure out how to access via my PC.
Its inside the external folder.
Sent From My Evo
Two ways to access the external sdcard to add files:
1. With your moto USB cable, connect the Xoom to your computer, click on Xoom drive, navigate to sdcard/external folder and copy/paste files, or
2. Use micro sd adaptor in PC card reader (or USB adaptor) and add files directly to micro sdcard then put back in Xoom. I always have to reboot for the card to be recognized by the Xoom.
I hope this helps.
I guess I am doing something wrong.
I have installed the kernel however I do not get any folders listed as externalSD or any variation.
Did i need to do something after installing the new kernel to activate the SD slot?
I have 1.4.4 installed, I see it in the /external folder. I didn;t have any previous versions of Tiamat installed so not sure where it may be if you had...

I thought I read in another thread that if the external folder doesn't show up under /sdcard/ it could be created (in Root Explorer for example), and then a reboot should fix the issue.
I haven't tried this myself, since it does show up for me. However, I copied stuff to the card before I put it in the Xoom, so I don't know if this makes a difference.

Stock UCLF6 writing to external_sd not working

I updated to ICS 4.0.4 (UCLF6) using CWM. I just noticed I am unable to make changes to external_sd. Initially, I was using an app to move installed apps to the external sd. Then after a reboot, I noticed my phone would say those apps were not installed. I also tried copying a file to external_sd using SSH/SCP. Everything shows the file there. In the past, the media scanner would kick in an run right after but it does not run.
Anyhow, after a reboot, the files I just copied are gone as well.
The 2 issues leads me to believe that writing to external_sd is not working.
Anyone else seen this issue? Are you able to write to external_sd and not lose the data after a reboot?
Phone is rooted.
SD card faulty?
You might check to make sure your SD card isn't faulty. I had a similar problem and I couldn't even write files or format the card from a PC. Ended up getting it replaced under warranty.
If you connect to a PC and are able to write files to it then I'm not sure what it could be.
Possibly but very unlikely. I upgraded to ICS from GB using zip files that I placed on the external sd. I suppose I could try and revert back to GB to confirm the external sd still works.
What I will do next is to copy all of the data off the external sd and reformat it from CWM. Let's see if that works.
The odd thing is I am able to write/delete stuff on the external sd. There are no errors in such operations. However, if the phone reboots, then all changes are lost.
It's almost as if the entire external sd were mapped to and running from memory. So you can apply any changes you want but they get lost when the power goes out (ie. reboot).
It seems I'm the only one seeing this issue. Have not heard anyone else seeing the same.

Problem with SD and SD ext mounting

OK, I got everything set up and it boots within 30 sec with my Gingerbread based MROM. But, I do not know why it can not show how much space my SD card (not the external one) has in the setting and it says that the SD card is unmounted. And for the camera, when I open it, it says that I have to put a SD card in order to use it (I assume that it refers to the external one), but my external SD card is already in my phone. Also, in the music app, when I open it, it says that my SD card is busy, which one it refers to? However, in the file manager, I still can able to see everything inside my external SD card while it says the SD card (not the external one) is empty. Really confusing... Can you guys explain all these?

if everything was working fine before you flashed the rom your on id start there..try restoring your backup and make sure you wipe caches and factory reset before the restore then see if everything is working..if so then reflash the rom and dont forget the caches wipe and factory before the flash.if its still not right maybe you have a bad download of the rom..try redownloading it or flash a different rom see how that works...also to be on the safe side wipe everything twice ..that way nothing gets left over that can cause glitches like that
