Improve battery life by Underclocking ??

I just installed "Overclock Widget", found here:

Which not only lets you overclock, but under-clock as well, and set ranges of frequencies for when the screen is both on and off. My phone is rooted and it appears to work fine, I just set it up so we'll see if it helps battery life. I set it so that when the screen is off the max frequency is 400,000 and when the screen is on the max is 800,000. The phone doesn't feel any slower than before -- to be honest, the speed is fine for me, I just need better battery life so we'll see if this helps.
Is anyone else using this app, or tried something like this to help with the battery life?

I don't know if there really is a need for this. I installed System Panel on my phone and it shows that the phone automatically underclocks based on load. My phone went down to 100Mhz while I was watching it.
I saw on AndroidForums installed a clock manager and was boasting that he set his phone to drop to 700Mhz. So, in reality, he just forced it to run faster than the phone would've on its own!

Interesting, I'll have to check that out. But, at the very least, with an app like this we should able to "throttle" the top speed to 800MHZ or so to save a little juice at the cost of some speed, correct? Or, is even something like that probably not worth it?

So is there no reason for SetCPU anymore? I just downloaded it, but I'll go ahead and uninstall it if people think its pointless on this phone

I thought about looking for something like this, but then when I went into system infoormation it showed that was I spending like 88% of my time with the cpu clocked to 100mhz, so there seems to be little point.

the screen is the real culprit in battery loss on this phone. black background swith red streaks are your friend.

HELP! Where did I go wrong?

So I just got a brand new D2G and thanks to the info in this forum I rooted it and installed fission rom and FRM...Im loving the phone, its fast, smooth and beautiful but the battery is AWFUL. I have read all the info about how to get the most out of your battery and everything on these forums but mine is waaaay worse than anyone has said before.
For instance, last night my phone was charging oernight, at 6 am when i woke up to pee it was at 100% so I unplugged it and went back to sleep, come 10 am when i woke up my phone was down to 15%!!! From just sitting there with the screen off...
Ive set the network to CDMA/Evduo automatic, installed Jrummy's overclock app...Can anyone explain in detail what exactly the settings in the overclock app mean? "set scaling frequencies at boot, cpu scaling frequencies etc?" for instance if I set scaling frequencies not at boot to ultra low voltage and 1 ghz and lower, do i need to also go into cpu scaling frequencies and make profiles and stuff?
Any information is greatly appreciated, Ive been reading up for days but this stuff is hard to find clear answers on specific issues. Thanks!

This is probably the most basic first thing to ask/do, but have you checked the battery useage to see which apps are using the most power? try doing what you did where you charged, and then let it sit for 4 hrs, and after that see what's using the battery, I bet there is some app that just nonstop uses the gps or 3g data or something wearing your battery life out super fast.

Yeah i looked at that this morning to see and all it said was suspend took up like 90% of the battery...Doesnt make any sense

1. Set at boot isn't what you're thinking. Set at boot means that whatever your current settings are will be set the NEXT time the phone boots. This is used when you have a setting you like. The reason you DON'T want to set at boot is that if you accidentally pick a setting that your phone doesn't like, and it makes it crash, then next time it will boot up with normal settings. Otherwise, you'd be looking at some work doing a recovery with either CWR or RSDLite... There are better ways to spend 30 minutes. Disclaimer: I use SetCPU, but the settings are all essentially the same.
2. For scaling, unless you're a power user (read: Geek) who's really up on his stuff, you should just stick with ondemand. This means your CPU will run at the lowest frequency possible, but will scale its speed up when processes call for it. This is efficient.
3. Yes, you should still make profiles. The setting on the main screen where you choose "Set at Boot" (Again, I'm speaking from SetCPU experience, but it SHOULD be the same) is just the main profile, setting the global minimum and maximum. You should leave the minimum on this at 300. The phones don't like to run much lower than that, even with the screen off; They start not ringing for calls, not waking up, etc. Set the maximum to whatever you want the max to be. You can overclock, which will obviously hurt your battery life. You could underclock and set the maximum to 1GHz, or even 800MHz, which would have a decent effect on battery life with no noticeable performance decrease to the average user. I run mine at the stock 1.2GHz and it's fast enough for my needs.
4. I wrote this thread to help people maximize their battery life. It's pretty detailed, you should give it a thorough read, it works well for me, and seems to work for others. I'm at 32hrs unplugged and my battery has gone from 90% to 20%. That's pretty light use, and I have an extended battery, but I still see over a day on my stock battery when I use it. There's a list of my SetCPU profiles there too, that might be helpful in setting up your own.

I will definitely read through your thread, but is it possible that I just had a bad battery? due to a shipping error, when verizon sent me my phone they sent 2 by accident so I just swapped out the battery for the other one and it seems to be doing much better already...

Heat, max speed processor = battery drain ?

After reading a lot of battery drain threads on this Samsung Galaxy I9003 subforum i have a doubt:
The recommended solution is to install a clean android 2.3.4 rom?
In my case the phone came with froyo and after a couple of months i decide to upgrade up to 2.3.5... anyway, about one week the phone starts to constantly heat up on stand by mode without 3g or wifi activated and off course the battery starts to drain :S on battery stats i can see the bigger consume (about 62%) is related to stand by mode :S
I try :
battery calibration
factory reset
wipe
reflash 2.3.5
flash 2.3.6
But sadly the problem persist :S
Todayi installed CPU spy and i got a big surprise when i saw the stats of CPU speed, most of the time turns to 1000mhz , like i said the phone it's ond stand by mode with no 3g, wifi connections activated :S
Also i rooted the phone and installed setCPU to limit the max speed up to 300mhz, with that i can see the phone doesnt heat that much (compared when it runs at constantly 1000mhz) but still works at constant 300mhz whatever i do...
I really hope that the solution is to reflash 2.3.4 (or maybe lower?) firmware

Thanks for your attention and time, i hav running setCPU (at barely 300mhz) and now the CPU temp is always at 32°C also i installed Watchdog lite and doesnt show any program doing an excesive CPU usage :S
Really i have no more ideas of what to look at
Yesterday at night i was reading a lot of drain battery related post (all the threads i found basically) and do the following:
Enter to CWM recovery menu > Advanced > Wipe dalvik
Also i select the ondemand settings for setCPU
Now the phone it's all the time on stable 36°C but sadly my battery still is drained (probably on deep sleep) Most of the time the processor is only at 300mhz and looking the battery stats android system and screen use an average precent (42% for display 23% for android system)
From a full charge (over a powered off phone) after 4 hours the battery has only 40% of ramaining charge and the phone it's on deep sleep (this phone today it's used only for make and receive calls, so no internet connection is activated)
No other people are facing this issue?

Seems to be a nice idea. But could you elaborate as on why the text is bold and you had to use capslock for 1/2 of it!?

So basically, we use an I9500 like an Ace or a Grand to get rid of heating and battery drains.. Andyou suggest that it won't result in performance loss. I'd suggest playing games that are more graphically intensive and not just Temple Run.. Try copying data from one memory card to another, or simply try running a Full HD Video. Also, check out web browsing or maybe multitasking, and you'll see where the performance dies out.
I think the fix should come in the upcoming releases of stock firmware by Samsung. By turning off a couple of cores, you're only going back a couple of years. I don't think I upgraded from the S3 to S4 for that reason.

everyone has there preferences and there needs in a phone. and there own settings. and this is a Battery discussion thread. we will be doing many performance and voltage mods, so everyone could choose the settings that suits them. now please dont post aggressive post like that, im not stupid. i know that my settings are very low.
but for my most played games and most used apps. it doesnt seem to effect my performance, so im comfortable with my settings

i had the phone for 2 weeks, happily showing off battery performance and then i asked myself again, why the heck i bought this phone in the first place? BECAUSE IT HAS REPLACABLE BATTERY!.. LOL.. how silly i am trying to squeeze that little drop of power out of the battery when I can double the battery just by getting another spare.
no need to turn off anything, no need to drop performance or screen brightness.. just pure enjoyment of the full potential without worrying battery problem.. just get a spare.

I didn't mean to be aggresive and sorry if you felt like that. All I mean is, there is a limit to which you can undervolt/underclock your phone without losing the functionality or speed. While underclocking to 1.0 ghz or 1.2 ghz sounds kinda normal, going all the way down to 800 Mhz and that too only on two cores is like running Galaxy Ace Dual Core instead. Why would I want to spoil my S4 for it?
That is all that I meant. And the phone is normally shelling out a good day's use in normal usage. Why bother so much about battery really???

My S4 i9505 came with MDE ROM from the factory, apart from doing dirty flashes over dirty flashes, finally someone came up with a recovery which is working. So i've :
1. Formatted system , cache , dalvik
2. Loaded in Djembey's stock slim deodexed ME2 ROM.
3. Using PimpMyROM, did some moderately less aggressive tweaks.
4. Capped the Max frequency at 1674MHz. Interactive gov, Noop sched.
5. Fully charged and unplugged.
6. Fully on 3G . Gmail sync for calendars, contacts, mail, keep, notes. Moderately heavy on Gtalk and Whatsapp. Browsing news and websites.
Observed 4 hours screen time.
Almost 15 hours of total usage + standby (This doesn't mean much, screen time depicts usage time more)
The phone still feels warmer than S2, under operation.
I've yet to try faux kernel yet, but i doubt it would get much better than this. The physical limit i feel is on the CPU, HD AMOLEDs, and the modem itself under normal usage.

hope you may be able to help. I have been trying almost everthing to increase the music volume as the s4 does not drive my senheiser headphones as well I would like. Is it possible to increase the gain through a kernel mod somehow?

Wow you're really random. This thread isn't even remotely discussing about the issue you raised.
Try the omega ROM thread, see if the functionality list includes volume hack.

Hello,
just installed CPU-Z from the app store which shows a constant 30-40% CPU usage. killed all tasks with task manager, but still doesn't change.
Is this normal or anyone else experiencing it?

One S (S4), Stock rom 4.1.1 (Lastest)

Do you have any problems with your phone?
Something to think about: your CPU will adjust its frequency depending on the load for energy management. For example: if your doing nothing you could be running at single-core 128MHz. So maybe it shows 30%, but it could very well be 30% of 128MHz(in short).
So those percentages do not necessary mean your phone has a problem.

My battery life is aweful. I can get around 2-2,5 hours of screen on time during a day...battery seems okay though. might have to do a factory reset or flash some custom rom.
