Which phone? - General Questions and Answers

Within a month i can choose a new phone. Any tips? Now have galaxy s1. What will it be? Samsung sony htc????
Grtz from Holland

Depends on a lot of factors. Which carrier are you on (unless you're planning to switch, in which case, which carrier will you be on)? Do you want a keyboard or is touchscreen enough?
After that, you need to consider the size, processor, display, and likelihood of upgrades if that is important to you.
You'd probably do well to go into the store and test drive a few phones for a little while and see what you like.

One thing to consider is what phones will be coming out on your carrier over the next few months. It may be worth it to wait to use your upgrade.

The carrier you're on is definitely one of the most important factors. I remember when people broke contracts for hundreds of dollars just to get their hands on the first iPhone...

it really depends on what you want it to do. Do you want raw power, customizability, developer support? For raw power i'd wait to see if the rumored htc zeta will show up, doubtful about the specs though:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/15/htc-zeta-rendered-rumored-to-pack-2-5ghz-quad-core-cpu-and-ice/
For customizability and developer support i'd look for something that everyone would have like the galaxy nexus

With the Galaxy Note the time has come to stop thinking mobile phone and start thinking mobile tablet. The Note is the mobile tablet you can carry everywhere like a mobile phone yet use like a tablet. The large screen is able to use Desktop view for Web browsing rather than mobile phone view and it is the perfect size for a Satnav. Reading eBooks on the Note screen is a breeze too with no need to zoom to read the text and you get a lot of text on each screen page. Once you have a Note you will find there is no need for a larger tablet because of the high resolution screen which is as good as most laptops.

i Recommend samsung

my advice or galaxy 2 or new model note nice phone

Samsung Galaxy Nexus...
I spent a lot on it, but i'm not disapointed so far!
It's great!
But, i can't compare with ohter android phones at all, since my previous one was a windows mobile 6.5 one xD
Hehehe..
But the GN.. is hot... and beauty!!

I would say Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Nexus.....both are awesome phones

.
Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.

HTC - nice design,
Samsung - advanced hardware.
My vote: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Good choices. Galaxy s2 is a great phone.

samsung galaxy s 2 gt9100 perfect phone...i am using that phone and i can only change it for galaxy s3

samung galaxy S2 rullz

in a month SGS3 might be available. It will be top notch and highly supported=faster updates.

The Galaxy Nexus would be a great choice since it has ICS and doesn't include a lot of Samsungs bloatware.
But again it depends on your choice for carrier.

[Q] Nexus Prime release date, and "Nexus Prime vs GSII"

I upgraded my line (contract was over) on AT&T to a Galaxy S II on October 5th. x, AT&T has a 30-day exchange policy. Meaning, if a better phone than the Galaxy S II comes out by November 5th, I can exchange it.
The only possible phone that I can think of is the Nexus Prime. To think about it: The Galaxy S II is an AMAZING phone, simply brilliant. But if the Nexus Prime is better...I'll want that, right?
So, that leads me to a few questions:
1. Could the Nexus Prime possibility be released before the 5th of November?
2. How do you think the Nexus Prime will compare to the Galaxy S II? Will it feature MAJOR features, over the Galaxy S II?
3. Will the Galaxy S II get ICS? I'd like quite a bit of software updates from Sammy, but I know the community here at XDA will have many versions of Android running on the S II for quite a long time.
Thank you!
P.S: Sorry if I posted this thread in the wrong section, these forums are just too big!
The Nexus Prime is pretty much a Google-branded Galaxy S II HD, which is pretty much a refresh of the Galaxy S II. That is to say, an S II with a 720p screen and faster processor to match.
The biggest advantage though, is Ice Cream Sandwich. Which the S II probably won't get for a while.
It's supposed to be being unveiled in all of two days time, at which point we should get a real release date.

Thanks for your input. One of the selling points of the Prime over the GSII is it being by Google. That means more software updates and better support. GSII is probably going to be outdated in terms of software soon, but the Prime will receive 16 months of updates :/
The 720p screen seems to be an OVERKILL IMO. Really, 720p? There is no telling how much processing power and battery life that giant will use! Damn, I bet the quality is amazing the AMOLED, though.
On the other hand, I have found myself attached to the external buttons on my Galaxy S II. They really save screen space.

My opinion is that Google and Samsung were hoping that the i9250 Nexus Prime would have been in and passed be the FCC by the 11th so the could announce it but it didn't pass in time so they postponed it.

It's been said it was postponed out of respect for Jobs.
For me, I love the 720p display best. nothing would beat this.
---------- Post added at 04:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:28 AM ----------
oh yeah, forgot to say , ICS also.
I for one would also like to know how the heck this new screen will fare as far as battery life goes......I mean will people need to be forewarned that watching a movie at 720p can drain your battery faster than you can say Ice Cream Sandwich? If you catch my drift? But I have to say this is enticing though.....it will almost surely make me regret buying the SG2 because then I know I don't have the best phone anymore. I love the SG2 but when this does come out with the GSM version I know I'll be wanting it. Phones are moving too fast.....especially Sammy with all their different variants of the galaxy line. (sighs)
Going by the spec rumours floating around the net it could posiblly end up having a weaker front and back camera then the Galaxy S2 and no SD-card support.
The only thing confirmed is the 720p display which is greater then the SGS2,even though i don't really understand the advantage of this.

It was just my opinion.... I am sorry for the loss of Steve Jobs and my deepest condolences go out to his family and friends but I think it would have looked bad for Google/Samsung if they announced a phone that didn't pass through the FCC. I know what was said about them postponing the announcement but I my opinions about it.

[Q] Galaxy note or Galaxy S2

Am currently using HTC HD2 but now I want to buy a new phone.
Am confused big time between S2 & Note. (bigger phone size is not an issue).
Am looking for good hardware with features. I will be using the phone atleast 3yrs after buying it. It should be worthy like my HD2. Am not impressed with S3 & so its not on my list.
What you guys suggest, or any other phone?

Out of those 2 clear choice the Note.
It's a unique device, still got great development going on. Much more real screen estate, S-Pen, just as good as the SGS2. If size is not an issue get the Note. I've played with it many times and it's lovely, a lot of guys that I have come across I've asked them how they like it and they say they love it.
Again both phones are old now, SGS2 is older so if you plan to use it for 3 years you may see no official updates in the next couple of years but devs will continue to work on them.

When is it launching, haven't heard anything yet about it.
I have a friend who has a note. He said nothing compares to it. Also the screen is a huge transition from any other smartphone BUT it does fit in your pocket
Def recommend the Note because it has great specs and Samsung's UI is very consumer friendly.
Note for sure if it nit to big for you, for me is to big, like tab is..

**What phone should I buy next?** -- Not sure what device to buy? Ask here!

Hi everyone,
This thread is a continuation of this thread.
This is here so you can discuss what your next phone/tablet should be, if you're not sure what to pick.
Also, if you need advice as to which device is better than another, then feel free to ask those questions in here aswell.
This is an attempt to clear out all the similar threads being created around these forums.
*NOTE* I will be requesting thread maintenance as and when it is needed, to remove any SPAM comments
Excellent, I hope this will attract some discussion on new devices so new threads won't be opened.
I am not looking for a new phone right now, well maybe not depending on the outcome of HTC repairing my Sensation I guess. I sure hope to find out tomorrow. I think if I was going to get a replacement now I would probably get the SGS3 over the OneX. I really don't like the non-removable battery and maybe worse, no SD slot. I know why they did it for economic reasons but I am just not going to go that direction. Batteries do not last forever and their maximum charge level goes down over time. I want to be able to plug the SD into my computer and do a local backup. I also want to be able to get a bigger or faster SD if one comes out.
I am used to Sense but I am sure I could get used to Touchwiz as well, and I just read in the portal that ROM Cleaner works with the SGS3 now, as long as I can rid of the bloat I am content. I am sure that when my contract is done in a year there will be something newer and better out anyways.
I hope it does aswell. These forums definitely have too many of those threads being created
I think I'd choose the S3 aswell to be honest. Even though the One X is a powerful phone, the S3 can quite easily out perform it, as it can with most phones.
The only time I'd be looking to upgrade is when mine become redundant, which with having an S2 (which can still keep up with the newest flagship devices) and Xperia S, I won't need to upgrade for a while I don't think.

The galaxy tab 2 10.1 is a pretty good tablet but it just seems a bit bland to me. Mainly because there wasn't much difference from the original galaxy tab 10.1.
The Nexus 7 is a little beast of a tablet though, so that could always be an option for you.
But if you wanna stay with Galaxy, then it's probably best to wait for the Note 2 like you said.

To buy Nexus 7 or wait for Microsoft Surface?
The question is really if the Surface will be cheaper than I bet it'll be (under 500)
Nexus 7 seems like awesome tablet, but I think it might be too small for me , but im not really sure, since I never owned a tablet, and where I live I cant go and see any 7 inch tablets in store.
So what you thnik, should I go for Nexus 7 or wait? Or better yet, is there more choices for cheap and quality android tablets?
7 inch tablets seem like an odd size to me. Not really big enough for the things I would use it for to replace a laptop, but too big to replace my phone.

You are totally right, but now to think other way: its easier to carry 7inch than 10inch tablet.
Also forgot to mention I have some problems with eyesight so bigger tablet might also be better choice, But the nexus 7 price really seems like a good selling point. But if the Surface RT will be 200, then I probably going to miss my money too much.

It depends on when you're going to be using it mainly. If you're out quite a lot of the time, then the Nexus 7 is probably going to be the easiest choice, because of carrying it around.
But if you're more often at home, then the Surface might be better for you because it's a 10.6 inch screen so it makes it easier for your eyes.
Another thing to consider is the operating systems. The Surface will be running Windows 8, but I'm not too sure what that's like to use.
And the Nexus is on Jellybean, it's definitely going to get the upgrade to Key Lime Pie and possibly the update after that aswell.
So, even though the Surface does seem like it'll be right up there with the best of them, I'd suggest the Nexus to be honest. It just seems like the best choice overall.

I might get the nexus 7, if I dont like it I could probably sell it here in Estonia for the money I would get it (from US.).
Also should be mentioned that I dont own a laptop or anything else to carry around, at home I use my desktop, and I dont go out too often, but I think nexus would be nice in school and so on.
Also all these old awesome titles (gta 3, max payne) are made for android these days which I really loved back then, are better to play on 7 inch than 10.6 (better to hold, easier) .
So I think i go for nexus 7, but I hope that I dont get the broken one (from first or second branch), because I couldnt take it back.
I will buy a tablet but I am not sure which. Note 10.1 or Nexus 7? I think nexus 7 is too small as a 4.7 inch phone user but not sure about it. But I want to have pure google experience. Is nexus 7 really that small or not? I'm stuck
I thought about bying the Xiaomi M2 or the Galaxy nexus and i cant pick it since the M2 has better hardware and it is smaller but only MIUI can be installed on him unlike the galaxy nexus which has a huge variety of roms.
In my opinion, a 7 inch tablet is the best for portability and viewing. It feels comfortable to hold with one hand, but it comes down to your personal preference really.

One of my friends asked me for suggestion...
His budget isn't all that big, with a max cap of 15000 inr (~275 usd, though the indian customs are notorious for high taxes; the s3 costs around 38000 inr = 690 usd; so hope you get the picture)
Mainly looking for a low budget android, maybe even a mid end device...
All he needs is "the latest android" on which he can play games...but I know about the quirks that come with a low end phone: inadequate internal mem, low cpu & gpu, lack of official upgrade support...the list kinda goes on...
I have zeroed on sony's live with walkman, mainly for the fact that it gives the most value for money...
The more the money saved + better features; the more likely choice it would be...
If anybody has better suggestions, please share them...
Brands present in india: Samsung, Htc, Sony, Micromax and smaller presence of Motorola and Huawei...
There is no contract system available here, neither are "subsidies" or such...

My next phone is going to be the S3!! I wish Samsung would stop making the phone bigger though...when I first got the S2 I got made fun of because how big it is although it's very thin...I don't see what's the point of going bigger...

Tab 3 7.0

Ok, I understand Samsung flooding the market with new devices everyday and of every size, but Im not sure I understand this..
Nearly Identical spec to tab plus and tab 2 7, should have called it the Tab 1.9, its such a step backwards.
http://goo.gl/fb/QBoEI
maybe they used up all their high-end processors, RAM and screens? so they made this out of scraps?
Probably still haven't got the earpiece volume right either
Are joking samsung? Just by changing the looks doesnt make it better than our TAB PLUS! Yeah im really proud of our tab.. same specs? plus have a better front camera.. they should have increased the ram and the resolution as well.. well.. thats tab 3 for you.. just like what we say about tab 2.. not because it has a higher number.. it will be better than the TaB PLUS.. PLUS still rules!

The gt plus didn't sell very well, eventhough it's a good tab.
Now Samsung tries to sell it again, with a different name, a different body, and two modifications.
The funniest is they may sell a lot of this "new" tab, because everything is a matter of marketing. Most people don't buy because of the specs but because of the color, the general aesthetics, and of course the advertising and the marketing around it.
So go for it Samsung, play with the people's braindeadness and take their money, they are all too willy to surrender it to you with a smile

+1 big words and ofc true
The Plus didn't sell well because of the cost. The 3 probably will just because it will be priced at about what the Tab 2 was priced at, but man, that thing is hideous.
I may be wrong but I'd say it's not a very good sign for JB on our device.
Remember last year when we were all awaiting ICS? They released the tab 2 that had ICS out of the box and left us to wait, maybe hoping that some of us would have bought their shiny tab 2.
See what I mean? Seems like with this tab 3 running JB out of the box we're facing what the historians call a recurrent phenomenon in history:cyclops:
I hope I will be proven wrong though, I'm tired of ICS...

I'm looking at going back to Android for my phone. The last Android phone I had was the HTC EVO. It has been that long.
I currently have a nexus player and nvidia shield tablet. So I have still been using android just not as my phone.
So the question is which phone is the best to go with? The s7 edge, nexus 6p or one plus 3.
I would like to stick with 5.5-5.7 screen and ability to do VR and stream games via moonlight.
So any advise?

Hmm... I have a galaxy s6 and love it. I would recommend nexus or galaxy.
Something important is that DO NOT buy a cheap brand! The specs might look good but the performance is terrible

Are you referring to the One Plus?
Doesn't it take forever to get Android updates on the Galaxy?

Well, it's hard to say. It depends completly how you want to use your device
Its true Samsung uses a lot if time on updates expecially if you are outside us and UK. But Samsung dedicates itself to the update trying to make it as stable as possible before releasing
I have never had that as a problem, the updates are very minor. Even from Lollipop to Marshmallow I saw very few changes. I would recommend you to do a Google search on the best android phones!
I'm not sure what I feel about nexus, on one hand Google is very good at quality, but on the other hand they are fighting strongly against root etc. So I gotta feeling it's only getting harder and harder to customize the phone
There's a dedicated thread for such questions here,

Many opinions to be had there, so I'll close this thread. :good:
