Viewsonic has finally released a update OTA for the GTablet:
http://www.viewsonic.com/gtablet/support.htm
Guess what this one bricks
Just like the one we had last April, this new one bricks as well. Mine doesn't even want to read the external sd card. I tried nvflash and it doesn't recognize it. Save this one and try it later.
Installed the Firmware 5699 OTA this morning. Upgraded with no problem.
After 10 months of no support from VS, I wonder why now? I wish there was a changelog for this...
No changelog. Wow. Never update firmware without at least reading the changelog....esp if system is stable
Great. Now give us official ICS or source code

That would be very interesting.
EDIT: not going to happen though.
Your cool Viewsonic, STILLLLLLLLL android 2.2...
I feel like this is a more of a low blow than anything. Us as users ***** for literally an entire year and Viewsonic labels the gTablet as an archived product on their website basically fully dropping support for it. Now 2012 rolls around and ICS is finally making its way onto a slew of devices and Viewsonic drops another update to a Froyo rom? Really? That was 2 generations ago... Like the hardware is still there to do something with this device. Team Drh has been proving this as we continue development with ICS. Now if Viewsonic wants to help us push ahead with this mission, by all means please help us out. But dropping updates to Froyo is BS if you ask me. But hey, what do I know...I'm just a user with an "outdated" tablet.

LOL! That's funny!
Changelog is up. Looks like everyone is being pushed to BL 1.2 now.

Ok I NVflashed my Gtab just for shticks and smiggles to see what this 5699 update was really all about...
Conclusion...GARBAGE! Plus it tells you to restart your Gtab and ends up having a broken android icon with an exclamation mark on the screen!!
Oh well...now Imma flash my PreAlpha ICS rom again! YEY!

Not much of a change log. They state over 40 enhancements, but then only list four.

Sounds like your GTab didn't take the update. It sounds a lot like the OTA update failures on Xoom's and TF's when its been rooted or modded.
Honestly though I do not see any visible changes. All code enhancements is my guess.
I am new and have only had the gtab for two months. I thought this is an update and I should download. Now my gtab doesn't work. I am not a techy by and stretch of the imagination.
I have done the power and +volume and it said recovery and had a wrench/screwdriver on it. Then it was coming on but stuck in the tap n tap screen and then turning off.
I only use to read and play games and will be nice to have on vacations or when away from home/work but now it doesn't work. I could use help.
Any help is appreciated. Wish I could take a class. Looked at viewsonic for dummies but even that is over my head.
Thanks for any help.

Do you know if your tablet was modified (custom rom, rooted, etc.) when you took the update? People with modified stock roms and recovery seem to be having this issue on another forum.
I would say the easiest fix to try would be to drain the battery completely (might take a while) if you can boot into recovery (power) + (volume+) or apx (power) + (volume-) and leave it on till it dies (edit - if you can boot into recovery try the wipe data/factory reset option if there is one, then try to reboot. That might fix it also). Keep doing that till the tablet won't turn on anymore. Then charge it and try turning it on again. If you are lucky it will reset your tablet to stock without any complicated fixing or flashing.
Remove your SD card if you have one before you do this. You will also loose any data not stored on your SD if you do reset it but hopefully it will work again.
Same Problem
I had this same problem yesterday after downloading the OTA update. I was able to restore the bricked device by holding the power for 5 seconds (figured it was shutting down in that amount of time) restarting in APX mode (power button and volume - simultaneously) and I did not see a screen response, I plugged in the USB cord and checked the safely remove hardware widget on the bottom right of windows system tray and could see NIVIDIA device. Therefore, I knew the GTAB was on and in APX mode. I then went to the rom of choice (stock tapntap) and double clicked the batch file for the ROM and watched as it went to the CMD prompt screen and transferred the file. I did have to run the batch file several times to get it to work...but it did. I downloaded the OTA again, and discovered the same results with the same fix. I will not download the OTA update a third time. Good Luck.
I had just put my VS GTab back to complete stock 1.2 4349 in anticipation of the ICS Rom release coming soon. My GTab showed a OTA update was available and I accepted the update. It downloaded and ran through the process with no issues at all. Some of the people having issues must have modified or rooted devices.

Yes. I can confirm this on my old device ( was running 1.1.3588 ). I went ahead and updated the tablet, and found out the exact upgrade path.
I'm for devices using firmwares older than mine, the first update will probably be to version 1.1.3588, and then from there, the rest of the updates.
The first update after 1.1.3588 is 1.1.3588+. After installing this update, the tablet will have be able to update to 1.2.5699 using the update program, or waiting for the notification.
yup.. downloaded find and dies on the install....I wonder if I take CWM off and do a factory restore if it would work.
Clear data/cache
To upgrade, you have to use stock recovery with 1.2 bootloader. Not rooted. No CWM.
In stock recovery clear data/factory reset, clear cache; otherwise, you'll get stuck. You will lose everything so backup with Titanium Backup.
I keep a copy of Titanium Backup and Amazon Appstore Apps on my SDCARD and SDCARD2 to install after installation and restore apps.
Plants vs Zombies crashes on this.
Pixel Rider on Slatedroid will eventually mod this with market and root to be named Detonator.
If you like stock, stability and camera, this ROM has a niche.

Build date is 2/12, and it's still Froyo. It looks like a lot of stuff was touched, perhaps they incorporated some recent Nvidia libs.
EDIT: They have a Flash player script in here - that's new.
EDIT2: So far, this update has competely borked my device. It's the bootloader or boot.img, so just keep that in mind. It could be that my device is all messed with all the recent flashing, but just be aware.
EDIT3: In case this is not already clear, this is a VERY dangerous update. Tread carefully - it requires stock 3588 as a baseline, including recovery.
3/28/2011 EDIT: Looks like Viewsonic pulled it (a case of the Woot! heebie-jeebies, perhaps?)
Sry to hear about your device. Hopefully you can figure it out. Bricked a phone before and took me a few weeks before I accidentally fixed it, lol.
As for the tnt update does this mean we may see another viewsonic ota update finally? Matbe they finally resolved the sluggishness issues and tntui will finally be usable
I got around the issue with using an older boot.img and bootloader. One (or both) are causing issues with my system.
They added a lockscreen - that will make some people very happy.
How did you get around this. I tried this update and it borked my device as well and I can't get past the viewsonic boot screen or load clockworkmod to boot the recovery kernel

I used nvflash - I dropped the old bootloader and boot.img in there and ran it with that, and it booted up.
EDIT: I couldn't get wifi working for Quadrant, but Nenamark is ~40fps. My guess is that they updated a lot of the libs so that they in up-to-date with recent Nividia changes.
EDIT2: Camera is working, including rotation. Gsensor is still off for games, but that's not a surprise.
Thank god for nvflash. I thought I seriously boned myself today installing this new UAT version. I flashed back to stock, reinstalled clockworkmod, and then was able to get back up to TNT lite 4.2.4.
While I am posting, I would like to thank all the Devs for their time and efforts making these ROMS and instructional posts. Without your efforts this tablet would seriously blow donkey balls. I actually bought the G tablet with the full intention of getting rid of the stock ROM and unleashing the full potential of the underlying hardware with the ROMS here.
Thanks again
This is not bad at all, I forgot how nice the weather dashboard looked because I was too busy cursing this thing for being sooo slow. I remember the first day I got this thing, I couldn't even stand to use it. It was so frustrating. You,gojimi and rothnic did an amazing job to get this tab where it is today. I think viewsonic even "borrowed" some of you guys work, lol.. Thanks Again for you guys work!
UPDATE: I went completely stock before this update, (no clockwork mod) this new update 3991 looks like it has a built in recovery menu. I don't remember that on older versions

I hadn't looked at their recovery - very nice. They are emulating what Notion Ink had done on their recovery.
This is going to be a nice update, once they shake out the bugs.
Here's a screenshot of the lockscreen, using the "classic" launcher:
Looks good, I like the changes.
2400 in Quadrant - and that's 3991 "stock", no changes. Normally stock is ~1900, I think.
I managed to get Wifi working by downleveling the Wifi drivers - that was needed to use the older kernel. I just don't understand why their new kernel doesn't work for me.

Looks/sounds very nice roebeet...can't wait for the push over OTA...I actually just went back to stock a few hours ago to mess with the enhancement pack with the January OTA update...it's actually fairly quick compared to the original stock...think I'll stick with it for a bit
I'm guessing that since it's a non-published update, then they may have an incomplete boot.img or possible they had to update the bootloader, who knows...could also be a "built-from-scratch" update that they are still working on, lol...doubtful but you never know
Good luck and here's hoping for an official push from Viewsonic here soon. The sooner they get this out, the sooner they can get to working on an official Viewsonic release of HC ;-) lol
Wow, that update is great! Though, sorry to hijack the thread, but I got no replies elsewhere, anyone had the "blank screen of dead" issue? I stop using my gtablet for a couple of weeks, and now that I boot it up again, the screen is white! (not even the VS birds..).
Keep pushing updates for us =)!

Roebeet has made a very stable build on the 1.2firmware. Itwasnt hard at all to get there. I think if and when VS brings out new codes, it will only be 1.2 compatible. My thoughts only, not gospel
Anyway, this is how I was able to get this working the first time without any issues.
1) NVflash to base build
2) CWM to clear all data, cache. I used Calkulin's FORMAT ALL. boot to the os.
3) usb to the comp and slip in 3588 and recovery folder. rename 3588 to "update"
3) reboot with power and vol pressed. automatically installs 3588.
4) once insalled, boot to os.
5)usb to the comp and slip in 4349 and recovery folder. rename 3588 to "update"
6) reboot with power and vol pressed. automatically installs 4349.
7) once insalled, boot to os.
8) now find Roebeets Brilliant Ccolors ROM in another forum and repeat step 5 and 6 for this ROM. you shuold be good from there!
While I definitely respect the dev's work, I think I'm going to stay away from 1.2-based ROMs until VS gets its firmware upgrade situation sorted out once and for all.
Did you mean ... rename 4349 to "update" in this step?

Any points on what you like on it, better than TNT Lite 4.4 (or any 1.1 ROM ). Things you could not do/were not as good in the older ROMs.
thanks

i installed it when it was released. heads up make sure to install the 1.0.1 supp so that you can have flash support back up and rollin.
This rom is the only one that makes the tab seem like a tab and not a giant phone I've seen so far. Assume and market has no issues for me every other rom I couldn't get market to work.
Just my opinion!
I believe the new update that was pulled should have been more like this .
Would be better with a kernel but definitely a step in the right direction.

Keep in mind this is not a TnTLite-based mod, but it's based on VEGAn-Tab from GoJimi - it's a MOD to an existing ROM repackaged with a locked bootloader from Viewsonic. The theme applied looks cool!
EDIT: After a nice PM from roebeet, I am clarifying for those who don't know the following:
VEGAn-Tab, in it's original state, was a collaboration between GoJimi, rothnic and roebeet
as already stated in this post, this new Mod is based on VEGAn-Tab and will over time take on a different form, but it's base is VEGAn-Tab
there is no insinuation that roebeet lifted anything from GoJimi, only a correct statement that the base for this Mod came from VEGAn-Tab
There. That should hopefully clear up any misperception or misunderstanding as to what I was stating above. This mod looks great roebeet.

sorry. Yes rename to " update". Make sure you reinput another recovery folder. While the folder would still be there, the system deletes the command file so it doesn't loop back to installing the same file on a reboot.

hi cbay,
First of all this rom is based off the 1.2 (4349) bootloader. Also it has the feel of the Vegan-tab outlook. It is pretty responsive and the FC are almost to none. So far it has been stable and running like a champ.. I know roebeet has removed the phone apk to improve the battery life as well so that a big plus. Once i play with it more i will know more about this rom.
The HD videos are working really good as well as the tegra games.
Let us know how u make out.
So what's the benefit, if any, of installing this as opposed to VEGAn 5 with the supplement?
I am currently running 5 and it is VERY stable for me. Love it. It's my Daily Driver.
Any improvements on installing this? They look they same for the most part.
I have vegan 5 on one tablet and brilliant corners on my other tablet. I honestly can't really tell a big difference. BC may be slightly more stable. I still take the vegantab with me to work everyday but that is more because i have it setup perfectly than any particular problem with BC.
Both are very good.

Nah ... the current Vegan ROMS work great, without the uncertainty.
Reading the boards I've noticed quite a few people who have possibly bricked their phones by using this horrendous piece of garbage. Leave it to LG. Regardless, I would strongly recommend against using it and either waiting for an OTA update or using xboarder's flashable, rooted update here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748 .
As far as I can tell, no one has been able to fix the s/w updater issue, which is leaving phones either with no recovery or unable to boot past recovery/restore ROMs.
This isn't the first time either. Just google "LG Software update bricking phones".
Oh wait, I did: http://www.google.com/search?source...gc.r_pw.&fp=79f73547dc11dcbf&biw=1366&bih=667
For those of you who possibly bricked your phones; hang on, I'm sure some of the great minds on this board will come up with a fix. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them.
ALSO! For those of you who don't know this already -- you MUST restore the stock recovery BEFORE trying to upgrade. That's also been causing problems. Just use NVFlash to restore the stock recovery, THEN upgrade using LG software if you must.
The stock camera app doesn't focus as quickly or have nearly as good quality (unacceptable quality IMO) as the LG app. I use my camera frequently and would not have updated if I knew it would be gone (reason why I didn't flash CM7).
Does anyone know of a way to restore to stock? I installed Nvflash at one point or another...
I was stock rooted and update killed that. No more root. But phone works great so far.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Update: I was able to restore Clockwork Mod (or had it from before, didnt check) with NVFlash. Then restored one of my NANDroid backups from before.
Bye bye ****ty LG gingerbread update.
I will agree with you. My phone is now bricked. Stuck on the S/W screen with no sign of ever getting it back. I was stock non rooted. And yes I did it on a win 7 64bit machine. Damn you LG and your ****ty updater.

It come back, I brick it the same way, once's before, if you didn't root, hold the power button and volume up at the same time, or if you did root, uses NVflash or clockwork to recover. And don't recommend using a 64bit OS for any type of programming or flashing, just install VMware player, it uses your CPU virtualization to run a different OS, while in your host OS and it's free, that allow you to run XP on a virtual partition, and use USB devies from host machine. The nice thing is if you mess something up, it won't effect the rest of the machine, and you can run the 32bit XP version of the tool.
Works great on mine. I backed up, used tga gunmans stock restore, replaced with stock recovery, unrooted using super one click. rebooted, installed the update, reflashed to custom recovery with tga gunmans app and installed the rooted version from xboarder56. Time consuming would be my only complaint and I love screwing with this thing so who cares.
Yes, my phone is too bricked by this app. Did any of you that are now bricked get to 4% after the download and during the update process, then windows popped up a dialog and claimed the app was no longer responding? this is what happened to me and boom, now i can't get back. I even tried doing the nandroid restore of the stock rom from CWM. Still can't get out of the S/W updater screen. Is there anyway to reflash the bootloader? I did try a live chat with a LG tech and he wanted me to do a hard reset. which is basicly holding down the vol-down and power button. so i did a nvflash back to stock recovery and tried it. It showed the box and android screen but then rebooted back to the S/W updater screen. So I called Tmobile and they won't do a replacement since i used LG's app. Said I HAD to go through LG to either fix or replace the phone. Called LG and have a RA# to send it in. Unfortunatly I have to pay for shipping there and it could take about a week to get it back. This really blows.

Mine worked fine on a 64bit windows 7 machine. I have not had no issues at all. The update is great (I think). The only problem I have is that the camera on the update sucks.
Here's an APK for the stock camera, but I haven't tried it on the update yet because I'm waiting for my phone to restore. Feel free to be a guinea pig

The stock camera app doesn't focus as quickly or have nearly as good quality (unacceptable quality IMO) as the LG app. I use my camera frequently and would not have updated if I knew it would be gone (reason why I didn't flash CM7).
Does anyone know of a way to restore to stock? I installed Nvflash at one point or another...

maybe you should have waited all of 30 minutes from when it came out for someone to say that it was the vanilla android camera app? either way, just flash your recovery again and just restore a stock nandroid...
I didnt have any problems on win7 64bit installing via the update tool... follow the freaking directions and stop getting so antsy and messing with things... mine was stuck on the S/W screen for a bit but all i had to do was unplug pull the battery and put it back in and plug back in and the update kept going...

stock camera does not work. try it already. thanks though.
i tried the LG updater on my win7 machine. let it sit @ 5% for 48mins.
then i tried the KDZ on the win7 machine, it crashed.
got out an old laptop w/ winXP SP3 - tried the KDZ method a few times, the final time it gave me model dll msg not found error 100 times, after that it rebooted the phone into gingerbread.
do it the KDZ method on a winxp computer before you mail these phones! i tried for 2 hrs and finally got it working!
edit: my phone was rooted & stock (no nvflash installed)

just because you had no issues doesn't mean others aren't. relax dude. i'm very adept at upgrading/modifying,recovering what seem to be bricked phones. much experience with haykuro's 1.33 death spl. but my win 7 64 bit machine would not install the update. NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I UNPLUGGED ETC. it was stuck on s/w upgrade. i nvflashed recoveries, did nandroid backups. tried everything i know of. different cables/ports....nothing worked. until i installed xp on a spare partition. finally kdx worked on the first try, even after the lg update tool failed on xp.

my point exactly... nobody really understands what bricking is... the definition of a brick means its literally nothing more than a paperweight... it is IMPOSSIBLE do anything to get it to work because the phone will not respond to anything... the fact that its on the S/W screen means it has life yet and as already pointed out just use NVFlash to breathe life into it...

Take your sd card and hook it to your computer. Create a folder named "clockworkmod". Open that folder and create a folder named "backup". Place TGA Gunman's stock recovery in the folder. On your phone hold down the volume down and start button at the same time. You will then see a new screen, release the buttons. Go to "backup and restore". You navigate using the volume up and down buttons and select with the power button. Choose the back up that you will see there. When it is finished navigate back and choose "wipe data-factory reset". Reboot. Power on and you are back to the day you purchased it. Or download a ROM from the developers section. I liked "Ultimate ROM". Then choose "install zip from sdcard. You are now better than when you purchased it.
This thread is an attempt to help out the Tiamat Developers by answering the frequently asked questions in one consolidated thread. This thread should also be helpful to those who either cannot use the search feature or are having a hard time figuring out the correct search terms to find what they are looking for. If you have suggestions or added questions/answers feel free to reply and I will update the OP.
NOTE: I am not a developer. All of the information in this thread is from other members who have helped me out or information I found in the XDA forums. I do not take credit for any of the great work that has been done on this ROM and I will point back to the original answer when possible. I am only trying to help lessen the burden on the developers so they can spend more time getting us the best features. Hopefully you find this helpful as well.
I've flashed this ROM and now I get update notifications. Should I accept the update? How do I stop these notifications?
No, you should never accept an OTA upgrade when using any custom ROM/Kernel. This could result in severe problems. Your best bet is to be patient and give the developers time to react. If the update is worthwhile I am sure they will roll it out pretty quickly.
To get rid of the notifications flash Mod pack 3 as noted here.
OK I made the mistake of accepting the OTA update and now my Xoom won't boot. What can I do?
okantomi said:
Can you make it reboot by pressing volume up and power at the same time and holding? If it reboots, wait about 3 seconds once you see the dual core logo and then tap volume down you shoud see android recovery, then tap up to choose it. I hope you did a nandroid backup. If not, you can try and get fastboot by tapping volume down sooner after it reboots.

From this thread.
With this ROM certain websites don't load correctly or I can't get to the mobile version of a site.
This ROM by default sets the User Agent String to "desktop". If you want to revert to the stock settings flash either Mod pack 1 or 2 depending which version of Moray you are running. Look here.
I flashed this ROM and now when I click links in email or my file explorer the screen just dims and nothing happens.
This is a bug in Android 3.2 and not specific to this ROM. To solve this, simply ensure auto-rotate is enabled and rotate the device from landscape to portrait and back to landscape. The app chooser window should appear allowing you to choose which app to open the selected file.
I just flashed this ROM and the speed is amazing, so I OC'd it to 1.7GHz cuz I want more and I am now stuck in a boot loop. This worked for others why not me?
The Xoom was only specified to run at 1.0 GHz, anything beyond that is a gift. Due to part-to-part variation not everyone's Xoom will be stable at the same speed. Yes some people are able to run at 1.7 GHz, but many cannot. For your specific Xoom try out the various speeds, but do NOT click "Set on Boot". This way if it crashes it will revert back to stock speed and you will be able to boot. Once you are satisfied with a speed then feel free to enable "Set on Boot". Before you do so I would suggest making a nandroid backup so you can restore just in case.
How do you get out of this boot-loop? The only way I know of is to boot into recovery and restore a nandroid backup if you have one or perform a full wipe if you do not.
I updated to the latest CWM and I cannot find the zip card or I get "get error: E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)."
Latest is not always the best, for the Xoom you need to either use ClockworkMod 3.2.0.0 (R4C) or CMW Rogue Recovery v1.1.1
After flashing this ROM the Motorola icon gets distorted during boot up, is that a problem?
Basically it is not a problem. This kernel has a patch provided by NVidia which causes the distortion during boot. It does not cause any problems after it boots.
Is there a way to get the stock WiFi and Battery icons?
Yes
How do I boot into recovery without ADB or my PC attached?
There are a couple methods.
1) The latest Tiamat ROM includes this if you press and hold the power button. Just pick what you want and hit OK.
2) Download and install "Quick Boot" from the market. It gives you the above options as well as others when you run the app.
3) Turn the Xoom on, wait ~2 seconds after your see the Dual Core logo, then press the volume down key. In the upper left corner it should say "Android Recovery", then press the volume up key to select it.
How do I get started? Any good guides?
There are several guides that are pretty good. The best one I have found and personally used is here.
The Xoom Heaven thread found here is also a good place to start for all sorts of information.
If you have another question please feel free to post to this thread. If you are having a problem or have a question it is likely that someone else along the lines will have the same problem or question. I will continue to update this OP with the list of F.A.Q.s.
Additional Q&As
After installing this ROM I am having issues with the market not finding all of my apps or apps are giving errors when trying to install them.
See this post for one possible solution.

darn you... I earned 1/2 my posts responding to the "why does my screen dim" question... now I'll have nothing to say!
i performed a factory reset from the os-> settings and once again performed a wipe/factory reset from the cwm recovery but still can't get back to the initial setup screen (where you enter your google a/c, etc)
any idea?

Why does Market show up in USD even though my locale is set to UK, my language is English British along with my keyboard layout?
Ive had boot loops twice. Both times i could get into recovery but could not get backup to restore . kept getting cant read /sdcard. also cant reinstall update .zip becuase the sd card wont mount. I have only gotten back in by letting it sit powered off for a bit.
any ideas?
should i adb a stock image and start again?
should i flash a different recovery?

What version of recovery is installed now? If you have the version that doesn't recognize your external sdcard you should certainly flash a compatible recovery version through fastboot.

I tried this ROM on my 4G Xoom, but it left me without 4G or 3G (wifi only). Any way to get this working, or do I have to wait for an update?
I did try activating the network in settings, but it never connected even half an hour.
Thanks to steps mentioned by user 'LordDeath' in another thread and a bit of experimenting with a rooted 4G Xoom and a friends 3G Xoom running Moray, there seems to be a remedy for those who are having issues with the market compatibility issues as well as missing apps. I did not activate until attempting to sign in to the market and had missing apps and compatibility issues. I simply did a full wipe & reset and made sure the full activation went through in set up then let it automatically start restoring. I took a peek in the market after a a minute and all my apps were back with no compatibility issues. Here is a copy of his original post and mine but the last step was not needed for me.

Translated into English it means "Error while processing the purchase". It was a free app, btw.
To solve this issue I did the following:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Active the device during the wizard on the first boot with my Google account
3. Restore the nandroid backup of the official 3.1 ROM
Therefore it seems that the market servers check your device-compatibility only during the activation process at the first startup.

"This fixed everything for my friend running Moray and even corrected the issues on my 4G Xoom..."
I should add that though this fixes the issue, if you change your pixel density you may run into similar issues but can correct it by setting it back to 160 before going into the market.
Forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong section. Forgive me if I'm not allowed to post here yet. Just forgive me in general. I don't want to be banned or anything like that. I'm Extremely interested in android development.
I made a working port of ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.8 for the Pantech Crossover. I wanted to do this before I started tinkering around with porting cm7.2. So that I would have a way to backup, restore, and flash new roms, etc... Or else when I make a noob mistake like yesterday and have a non booting phone resulting in having to flash my old boot.img with fastboot...anyways..
DANGER: DRAGONS AHEAD
FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
The method I used to flash the recovery was:
1)adb push recovery.img /sdcard/recovery.img
2)flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
3)repeat step 2 (for some reason it gave me a read error out of memory the first time)
Here's the link to the custom recovery:
http :// dl. dropbox .com /u/20070520/ recovery.img
I know I'm not supposed to post links yet. Remove spaces
I just hope that there are others with the Pantech Crossover that are interested in this and the possible future development of custom roms.
Also if anyone knows if there is a good way to get ahold of koush let me know, so I can give him what he needs to hopefully add this to Rom Manager. I couldn't message him on github because he doesn't have an email set up with it
And while I'm at it. Here's the method for rooting your crossover. I'm not going to provide the files since they can easily be found with a google search.
1: Find a copy of gingerbreak.apk and copy it to your sd card
2: Enable usb debugging and allow installation of non market apps
3: Install gingerbreak
4: Root device with Gingerbreak
5: You can uninstall Gingerbreak when its completed.

Thanks so much for this! I have a friend with a crossover and is always looking for my help with making it work better. I realize this is a newer thread, I was wondering how things were coming along with CM? Anything I can do to help perhaps?
crap i need a rom to fix my crossover the buttons are no longer mapped after a hard reset. please help.
Slow
Well, it's been slow goings so far. I downloaded the open source files for the p8000 and it looks like they just built the original rom from a generic build. I've been trying to get a more customized build setup but I need to do some more reading so far. One of the problems is that instead of an akmd(2) binary for orientation and compass it uses three separate modules. Plus the hci_attach is a bit different as well and so is the bluetooth. So that significantly hampers the ease of even a basic port.
As far as the gentleman with the question about a rom to fix your device. The best I can do right now is to upload a clockwork mod backup after I do a factory reset. I don't get much time to work on this between my wife and daughter.
Also, do you have adb access to your device? Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to adb push the correct keymapping files back to your phone.
You say a hard reset messed up your mappings? What problems were you experiencing prior to the reset?
Crossover
Hello,
I just wanted to let you know that there are people watching your thread. I am very interested in this as my parents have Crossovers and have recently rooted and unlocked them (well, I did) and set them up to work on Net10.
The only issue I've noted is that there are some failures, like the Market refusing to install apps no matter what is done. I'm going to install your ClockworkMod in hopes that later it might be useful.
I realize there isn't a large development scene for the P8k yet, and maybe there won't be but it's always a great hope that those with the capabilities might take pity. I was almost thinking that it might be my foray into actually looking deeper at the code than the small bit I've done.
Kind Regards,
Kaylus

I haven't had any problems with the market refusing to install apps but I do sometimes run across the no connection error with the market when on wifi. Although I did notice this before I rooted my crossover. Sometimes disabling and re-enabling the wifi helps. I really do think it is a bug somewhere in the original rom.
As far as the custom recovery image. Everything seems to be working pretty good. I use it mainly for restoring previous backups. I would say I've restored my backup at least a dozen times. Occasionally it states there was an error restoring .android secure but I have yet to track that down. I need to double check the recovery.fstab to make sure I have everything set right for the mount points.

I'm actually completely stuck at this point. I'm rooted, unlocked, different carrier, APN set correctly. I can access data and voice -- but it just hangs at "Downloading..." on the market. If I factory reset it works initially but after reboot it fails. I'm not quite sure why this occurs and if it is just this phone or a side-effect of using it on a different carrier.
Strangely Wi-fi doesn't resolve it.

I'll give your recovery a run and let you know, if you manage CM7 let me know I know it's a big undertaking. Thanks for the response.
Market Error
As far as the Android Market hanging. I see a few references to it being cause by the .android_secure folder becoming corrupted on the sd card.
One temporary fix suggest moving all the installed apk's back to the phone memory and deleting the .android_secure folder. Then rebooting and moving those apps back to the sd card.
That seems like some wasted time if it doesn't happen to work. I would just turn the phone off, remove the sdcard, and restart (granted any apps that were moved to the sdcard wont work until it is reinserted.) Then I would try to download and install an app. If that works then shutdown, insert sd, and reboot.
I'm really curious if the problems with .android_secure that you and i are having aren't just more bugs in the original rom.
Just as a poster above me said, I am watching this thread and really appreciate everything you are doing. Thanks again.
Well I appreciate the support. I just hope to be able to offer a rom sometime soon. Unfortunately I won't have anymore free time till Tuesday

Bricked?
I tried to use the pantech provided gingerbread update this morning. It got about an eighth of the way through and failed. It instructed me to reboot while holding volume up and home and power. That put it in software updating mode. I tried the upgrade 3 more times, it failed at the same point each time. Now my phone is stuck in S/W Updating mode and I can't seem to get it out. I've tried pressing volume up and down for 10 seconds, and pressing volume down and home while powering on, nothing seems to make a difference. Any thoughts about how to at least get me back to froyo?
