First off, yes I realize that complaints about the Skyrocket battery are very common, and coming from a Nexus One I'm no stranger to the nightly charging, but I feel like my phone may have a real issue with proper battery management. For example, I'm looking at my phone now. It's been on for 4hrs 43 mins and is down to 73%. Screen is 61% usage and then the typical other stuff below it. For the record the screen has been on for MAYBE 20 minutes total for answering texts and checking Facebook/twitter updates. I should also note that I am using the Galaxy Nexus extended battery. I feel like every time I turn on the screen I lose 1-3% of battery. For the record, I've tried multiple Roms (Stock, SuperStock, NexusMod, Sky ICS, and running CM9 RC2 currently) and multiple radios (running RUXLF3 currently). I've tried underclocking my CPU with SetCPU and that doesn't seem to help. I just installed JuiceDefender but I don't see that doing much as I can't really turn off data with the screen off because I'm connected to my company's email (refreshes automatically every hour.) The only stuff I get pushed to me is Gmail (and I consider a very busy email day to be 5 emails in a given day). I don't get Twitter or Facebook updates sent to my phone. And yes I have Wifi/BT/GPS off as I don't need them. I'm not in an LTE market and thus am using HSPA+. However, when I WAS in an LTE area (NYC and Atlanta) the battery drain was almost to the point where I almost hoped I DIDN'T get LTE in my market if it meant my battery life would be as atrocious as it was.
Within about a 8 hour period it is not uncommon at all to be around 50%, sometimes dipping as low as 30% depending on how boring my day is thus resulting in more FB/Twitter checks than normal. I know that the Galaxy Extended battery isn't going to give me life on par with a Razr MAXX, but the difference I've noticed between the OEM and Extended seem almost negligible. Is this considered "Typical" performance or am I doing something wrong either software/hardware wise? Could I just have a bad phone and try and get it replaced since it's still under 1 year warranty? I'd prefer to not have to do that unless necessary as it means I need to back everything up and then wipe out my data and go back to Stock and reset the flash counter and then do the ICS update via Kies (because I know AT&T will fire back and say "Try out ICS first and then return if that doesn't work!") and all that fun junk.
Thanks
Sounds about right to me. Just turn off data when you aren't using it is all I can say.

My thoughts:
1. 50% in 8 hours of moderate use is, imo, not terribly unusual for a Skyrocket without a ton of fine-tuning done to it. The Skyrocket, in general, is not a marathon-runner of a phone. It's better for short sprints, although you can (as I have) make it a marathon runner with extensive tweaking.
2. I haven't tried all the ROMs you've listed, but I can tell you that CM9 on my Captivate and my Skyrocket had severe wakelock issues. My Skyrocket's battery would drain off at twice my usual rate when I tried it, and the ROM prevented my Captivate from sleeping at all (I was lucky to get six hours out of a charge--at best). It's not my favorite ROM for battery life. SkyICS, in my experience, is the absolute best battery life of any ROM.
3. Get rid of JuiceDefender and SetCPU. JuiceDefender works primarily by preventing applications from doing what they want to do. Common sense dictates that when a computer program is unable to do an assigned task because its primary method of doing so is blocked, it will try something else. That "something else" may or may not result in a series of wakelocks. SetCPU is designed for single-core processors. The changes it makes will usually affect only one of the two cores in a Skyrocket's CPU, causing the second core to do weird things. I do, however, recommend using System Tuner. All you need is the free version, because all you need to do is lower your min to 192 and change your governor to ondemand or conservative (I use conservative). You're not forcing new profiles onto the phone's CPU, just giving it a little "attitude adjustment".
4. Get rid of the Facebook app and replace it with Friendcaster. Like, now. The Facebook app uses battery and data even if you tell it not to.
5. Have you downloaded BBS? If so, are you using it to track down your wakelocks? I've got a post inside of the above thread that explains how to do so and, well, explains just about everything else I've already said here or would say if I continued. So, yeah, just read that thread. It's not terribly long, and there's a ton of great info in the OP and throughout.
For reference, I'm a light-to-moderate user of my phone, not as heavy as you by any means. I'm not in an LTE area, which helps. That being said, with the Nexus extended battery, I'm now at 2 days, 5 hours and still at 23% charge. I used the phone very heavily while traveling a couple of days ago, starting at 7:00 AM Eastern at 100% and ending at 11:45 PM Mountain with 11% left, 4h45m of screen-on time.
I just find that odd since I find people giving great stories with the SKY ICS and others in terms of battery life. Ironically, I've found that SKY gave me some of the WORST battery life which really made me feel like a dolt. Here's the latest battery stats attached. Perhaps my view of things is skewed though because my day starts at 6am and I'm at work by 7 (with my phone typically turned on at 6:30) so I still have a good portion of my day left by the time I get home and my phone is typically less than 50% by that time. It's weird to know you have about 7 hours left in your day and your phone is saying like 40% power left.
What's your screen-on time in those screenshots? The frequent wake-ups make me think that you've got some rogue apps syncing when they shouldn't be.
Hello OP, I have exactly the same problems as you except i'm still running stock (rooted with frozen bloat). I tried the Galaxy Nexus Extended Battery and from stock it was more horrible. appox 1 hour less than the stock battery. I did try not using my phone like normal (about 25 mins of screen on time) which was a PITA because mobile internet is my only way to sneak down time while watching my toddler son. The battery lasted 11 hours. With stock battery, I would've lasted around 10 hours. A lot of people say it might be bad battery BUT how can I have such terrible luck to get a bad stock and a bad GNEX ext batt??? lol. So I ordered the qcell 3800mah extended battery and boy I won't be looking back!!!! I am currently still at 25% battery, 17 hours 20 mins with 3 hour 38 mins screen on!! I watched two Naruto episode last night and didn't have to worry about my phone dying while I'm sleeping and end up not getting important calls from husband early in the morning. The hump doesn't look great but it does not bother me when I'm holding the phone and I have small hands. The weight is a little bit on the heavy side but for so much more battery hours, I don't think you'd mind. Now, if you are the type who is always out and can't find sockets all the time, I suggest you try this qcell ext batt. for $20 you can't go wrong. I know you'd hate spending another $20 but trust me the battery works wonders.
On a side note, i also ordered a charger for my standard and GNEX battery from ebay so I can charge them independently if i ever have to go on long long trips and need super juice. That's another $4, takes two weeks to get here from China. There's a hack here in XDA somewhere to make it a really fast charger because it is really a SLOW charger despite what their ad claims.
Good luck!!
PS: I also bought the SetCPU since everybody swears by it. I never saw any difference.

I just checked and it says 1 hour 4 minutes. There's NO way it's been on that long, or at least not with me looking at it, and I usually turn off my screen when I'm done as opposed to letting it go to time out, which is 60 seconds anyways. I'd say 30 minutes would be it AT MOST.

My goal is to avoid the super extended battery because then it means I need to buy a whole new case as well. I'm one of those people that "needs" a protective case because the only reason I have the Skyrocket is because last December my 1 year old took my beloved Nexus One and threw it down 16 flights of stairs. The phone then entered a vegetative coma state and never recovered. I can't have that happen again. So basically I'd have to buy the new phone then buy the new case. I'm trying to spend as little extra money as possible.

well, there are hacks floating around with otter box to fit the hump back. I'm sure you will find other cases from ebay that can be hacked this way too. I don't have this problem since Ii use my phone naked because i only got it for $10.00 and my other line is due for upgrade soon. anyhow, it really depends mostly on what you would rather have, battery life or case. It could be the phone but most likely AT&T will tell you that smartphones consume a lot of energy and if you are not within that 30 day period anymore they'll probably give you a refurbished one and you might end up with a more dud one than the one you already have.

I try to keep my phone out of my pocket because I don't think cell waves near my "area" is a good combination. When I am at work it's on my desk for about 7 hours, and then at home I usually leave it out (at a high elevation away from my daughter of course.)

That's still a little high. I was going to ask if your volume rocker wakes your phone, as that can be a big phantom screen-on culprit, but if your phone's on you desk most of the time...
Download BBS and pin down your wakelocks and alarms (which cause wakelocks) from there. If your phone's not suffering any extreme drain from a rogue app or process, then you might just be at the best you're going to get for your usage.
Have you tried different radios at all? I've heard those can have a minor effect on battery life, depending upon your area.

No but the 4 buttons do as it is a CM9 feature. Honestly though they aren't on for very long as I usually am near my phone and notice such things rather quickly.

I don't use the volume rocker for waking just FYI.
I got BBS. It looks informative but I'm not really sure what I should be focusing in terms of statistics and what, if anything should jump out as problematic. Any tips?
I have tried at least 4 different radios but I haven't noticed any major difference between them.
I just saw that CM9 has now been officially released in stable form. Maybe that will help. I'll try that ROM now. I hope CM9 is not the issue, as I've always been a "Vanilla Android" kind of guy and I really like how ICS is designed. I never liked how the other ROMS still had touches of Touchwiz in them. I especially don't like how it mimics iOS styles so much. I mean, I'm definitely pro-Samsung in the major lawsuit, but Apple has more than a few valid points in their argument. Having similar icons and a SMS theme that basically mimics iOS isn't going to help Sammy in the big lawsuit.
True, it's a well-known problem. You may find some rom with better battery life (here is the rom I'm using: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854). You can also download some apps that save your battery. Try to turn off GPS, Wi-fi and data when you're not using, and also do not keep the brightness of your screen too high. I hope these would be helpful to you.
Check the link in my sig for details on how to really use BBS to improve your battery life. You're not that far off of a normal battery life for moderate to heavy usage, so just tweak it and go from there.

The thing is though is that I don't consider myself to be a moderate to heavy user, but more of a light to moderate. As I said, on a typical day I answer maybe 5-15 text messages, check Facebook/Twitter a handful of times, almost never get emails sent as I have no life, do almost no web browsing, and maybe take a phone call or 2. I very rarely play games and even less often stream media. My gmail is push but that's about it. I also use Touchdown for Exchange but that queries only once an hour. Am I still being unrealistic with my expectations on my battery?
Something definitely seems off, and you may well have a bad battery or even a bad phone. Try to go through and clean everything up in terms of wakelocks and any possible rogue apps. If you're still in bad shape after cleaning up your phone, something seems off. Mobile data does chew up more battery than Wifi, but not THAT much, and especially not in an HSPA area.

I don't think it's a battery issue. I've used the OEM and the Galaxy Nexus extended battery and both are delivering similar performance (although GN is slightly better obviously.) And as I mentioned, when I was in an LTE area my battery was getting beat down like Homer Simpson in a fight with Drederick Tatum.
Would it be advisable to try a FULL wipe of my phone? When I was installing CM9 today I saw the option to format EMMC. Should I try doing that or wiping other stuff or would that just do more bad than good? Should I try wiping that and/or the SD card?
Hey all,
About three weeks ago I had a strange problem. I noticed that in two straight charge cycles, my battery life plummeted from about 80% to zero in just a few hours. I'm not sure what the issue was. I hadn't changed settings, installed new apps, etc. My first screenshot shows an example of what happened. 4G and data were off during the entire time.
Since then, things have been okay. I typically get 3 days standby with 4G on and light use, or 4 days with 4G off. That's mostly standby with maybe an hour or so of talking and minimal use.
After those strange battery plummets, I installed and used GSam Battery Monitor to get more details about what processes were running on my phone in case I noticed the sharp drop happening again. Everything had been fine for over two weeks, with me getting expected battery life before this issue and not experiencing any odd, sudden drops (maybe 5 or 6 charge cycles). This lends me to conclude that my battery's charge capacity is okay, and calibration also shouldn't be an issue.
However, the problem arose once again a couple days ago. Went from 75% to nothing in just a few hours. 4G was off during that time. The third and fourth screenshots show the same issue. Charged my phone, and this morning the same thing happened yet again. At about 90% the plummet began, and within an hour or so I was at 75%. At this point I took screenshots of Android's battery status, and I also did the same for GSam to show what apps and processes were running. The phone's temperature seemed fine.
The GSam screenshots taken when the phone was at 75% and dropping are in the next post, since I'm limited to four images in this one. I have no idea what's causing this massive, sudden battery drain. The only thing I can think of is that I've done Verizon's OTA updates, but otherwise pretty much all my settings, apps, and usage are the same. Plus, for two weeks I had normal battery behavior, so I'm completely baffled.
I also know that cell standby is incorrectly reported in the GS3 battery screen, and I'm getting a good signal where I live so that shouldn't be a problem. I forgot to get screen time for the first case (first two images), but it shouldn't be more than 10-15 min there since most of the charge was lost due to the freak plummet.
If anyone may have an idea of what's going on, or if there are some tools/tests I may use to figure this out, I'd really appreciate it. I turned off my phone after taking the screenshots at 75%, so if I need to turn it on and check something for you I can probably do that. Thanks a lot.
FYI, here are GSam screenshots from when the battery was in the process of plummeting this morning.
i think you built in battery status settings are off. i barely get 12 hrs with medium use, so what i think it happens is that the battery monitor is not showing the proper discharge, and then all of a sudden it catches up to the discharge rate.
are you on stock rom, rooted, unlocked bootloader?

I am stock rom. No rooting, no unlocking.
These plunges are definitely an anomaly. Truly, with me barely using the phone and turning off mobile data, I get a few days of standby. I've had the phone since July, and the aberration in battery behavior has been the steep plunges I've shown.
In between these instance of steep plunges, I've had normal use. I really don't think it's an issue of calibration. Please believe me when I say that my normal, light use during the past four months gets me anywhere from 3-5 days with me barely using the phone. When I say barely using it, I mean not even touching it for an entire day if nobody calls me. But now, a sudden plunge in battery life is happening at 80% with no apparent reason.
I think it might be some kind of software or hardware glitch, but it's impossible for this to be normal given the battery life I typically get. Just looking at that steep drop, it's crazy and just happens out of nowhere.
But please trust me when I say that these sudden plunges that have happened a total of 4 or 5 times, causing the battery to drain completely in a few hours when I'm not touching it, are quite a drastic aberration from the normal standby life I get. Something is definitely wrong here, I just don't know what.
And one more thing to add is that after this sudden plunge and rapid drain, charging the battery still takes the normal time it does when I'm not having this issue. That is, about 2.5-3 hours to reach a full charge (and I charge with the phone 'off'). The battery is being completely drained. But this happened twice, then didn't happen for maybe 5-6 charge cycles, then happened again twice.
Before the first instance, I remember an OTA Verizon update around 10/5. My phone was okay for 2-3 charge cycles after that. Then two rapid drains. Then 5-6 normal cycles. Then two more rapid drains. There was a second Verizon OTA update somewhere in there but I can't remember.
and you said it only started once you did the OTA update from verizon right? well you could either try to go back to the stock verizon rom pre-update and see what happens there, or contact verizon and let them know what happens with the new OTA update. they could replace your phone, or it could be a bug of the new OTA update. i am on stock rom and rooted and deleted the apk that kept on trying to push the update. just unlocked by bootloader and so far my battery life has improved compared to previous locked bootloader.
i would take it to a verizon store and show them. They might give you a new battery.
I may have to do that. I'm just not really sure what the issue is.
- The battery can still hold a full charge.
- Based on running services, nothing is causing high CPU usage.
- The sudden plummet almost seems kind of random.
- Since there have been normal charge cycles, it's not an issue of calibration.
I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue or software issue. I'm trying to wrap my brain around what could cause the battery to drain so suddenly and sharply. Could the charge somehow be "leaking"? But in that case I'd expect it to happen all the time. If there's an underlying software issue, is there any other tool I might be able to use to figure it out?

Not from what I can tell. Note that the first couple plummet drains were overnight.
But today I caught it before noon. The phone wasn't hot, and the GSam screenshots show no CPU stress.
Maybe you can do a factory reset and se if that helps. They will probably do one if you bring it to verizon anyways. It sure sound like a hardware problem. You'd think if the processors are working that hard that the phone would get hot, I know mine gets pretty hot sometimes under heavy use.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Thing is, all indications show the CPU isn't working hard, and the phone wasn't hot.
I'm stumped.
This is a noobish question, but I presume the only way to go back to stock is to factory reset? One thing I might wait for is the Jelly Bean update, presuming this random drain holds off until then.
But yea, I dread going into VZW because they're just going to try to pass this off onto me doing something wrong, or me not knowing how to calibrate the battery, etc. The information I've provided in my OP and in the screenshots would fly over their heads. Maybe I can just do an online chat and tell VZ to send me another battery?
The only other thing I can think of is that sometime before these plummets happened, I went online to MyVerizon and turned off the Backup Assistant for movies/music/etc. so I wouldn't get all those notifications. I don't think this could be the issue, since the plummet happens when data is off. Plus, GSam would show that Backup Assistant is hogging the CPU or forcing a signal.
I doubt swapping batteries will fix it, though. I'm thinking my internal hardware might have a serious problem.

Before the update, was everything normal?
Is the update with the HE base/baseband?
It probably isn't a hardware problem, just a bad base.
I've noticed after updating my GS3 to the HE base and the battery life was just horrid.
It's said that the new HE baseband uses up more battery also

I turned on the phone and within 10 min or so the battery life went down by 2-3% without me doing anything. As a test I've put it into Airplane mode, and it's decreased by about 2% in 45 min.
Now I'm wondering if I have a faulty antenna or something.
Yup ive had it drain 90% overnight many times for no reason. Called verizon and my new battery should be here today.

Well, no calls made or received during that time. No data being used.
So, wasn't really using the phone during that time...
Hi everyone.
Recently, in the past 2-3 months, I've had MAJOR problems with my battery, i.e.. unreasonable battery drain.
I used to get very decent battery life with my HTC One X, especially when using Sense ICS ROMs.
Since early this year, however, I've experiences severe battery problems.
The most troubling thing however, is the battery drain with Airplane Mode ON. It used to be (and with every other phone I've owned), if Airplane Mode was ON, battery drain was VERY low, even when playing music or something. And in deep sleep, there should be very very little battery drain.
However now, even when turning Airplane Mode ON, the battery still drains considerably – like 0.75 - 1 % an hour. And this is with the phone in deep sleep (I checked).
And with Airplane Mode OFF, the battery drain is really bad. I get great LTE/HSPA+ coverage in my house, usually a full 3/4 bars. But if I go to sleep with the phone at 80% battery, in 8 hours it will have dropped to at least 65% (Sense ROM with no apps installed).
PICTURES!
I ATTACHED SOME PICTURES
The first 3 pictures are old, with reasonable battery drain. These are with lots of apps installed.
The last 4 pictures are new, with bad battery drain. These are with NO apps installed.
As you can see, in the old pictures, with Airplane Mode ON, there is VERY little battery drain, both on Sense and AOSP ROMs. And even with Airplane Mode OFF, battery drain is much less on older pictures.
Compare for yourself.
And let me say that this problem is apparent in ALL ROMs, ALL configurations, ALL setups, ALL RUUs, ALL radios, etc... You get the point.
Actually, the majority of the 'testing' that I've done has been with fresh, clean ROM installs. Either AOSP ROMs with only Gapps installed, or Sense ROMs with NO third-party apps installed, and only Google Account signed-in.
Some configurations I've tried:
1.73 RUU, stock, no apps installed
2.20 RUU, stock, no apps installed
3.18 RUU, stock, no apps installed
Custom Sense JB ROMs, stock, no apps installed
ALL AOSP-based ROMs, stock, no apps installed
ETC...
Currently, I have no idea how to solve this problem, and am very sure that it did not exist in the past (started a few months ago). I've done nearly everything I can, even tried changing the outlet I use to charge my phone. And yes, I use the default, included white HTC charger.
My only option I see is to pack the phone up and return it to HTC under warranty and have them replace the battery. There is no water damage BTW (I checked the strip inside the SIM tray). And virtually now physical damage to the device.
This HOX is my 3rd replacement, the original was bought on May 6.
Does the warranty end 1 year after the original device purchase, or the purchase of the final device? ( I got the third one some time in June ).
But just to be safe, I need to ship it back to the before next Monday.
And lastly, I have:
S-OFF, bootloader unlock, SuperCID
In order to return the phone, I have RUU'd to 3.18 (so it looks authentic), and I will probably relock the bootloader, but leave it S-OFF.
I know you can modify the text in the bootloader to make it appear FULLY unmodified, so I might do that also.
SOOOOOO....
Any advice, precautions, etc? Especially for sending it to HTC?
Insurance, how to deal with HTC, how to convince them to replace my battery?
Any advice as to what might be butchering my battery? Seems that since I've tried virtually every software option, the hardware is the problem...
HOWEVER, could S-OFF be the problem? I S-OFF'd the device around the same time that I started having battery troubles, so could that SOMEHOW be the culprit? I don't know...
Is my battery actually looks bad, or is my perception just really screwed up?
Help? Please?
Your battery drain doesn't sound that bad to me. Batteries wear out over time and don't hold the same charge they used to. 1% per hour hardly seems like anything to complain about.
I doubt you're going to get a warranty repair for something like this.

I'm getting around 2-3% battery drain per hour, if I just let the phone sit there. And in Airplane Mode, it's just as bad.
Trust me, I've noticed a definite decrease in battery life compared to just a few months ago.
I'll also have some overheating problems with light usage on Sense JB ROMs (including the 3.18 RUU stock), so I think that might be contributing somewhat.
But I've been meaning to make a post about this for weeks, and in the meantime trying to ignore this problem and fix it. But it just isn't happening.
What kind of battery drain do you get with Airplane Mode ON?
Compare the drain in the old (1st picture) vs new (5th picture) when Airplane Mode is ON.
That drain doesn't sound bad to me at all, that sounds completely normal.
Really?
Well, on AOSP 4.2.2 ROMs, with Airplane Mode ON, AutoSync OFF, and no apps installed, and no wakelock, I get around 3% battery drain per hour. Probably due to bad power management in the ROMs themselves.
On Sense ROMs (and this is much worse on JB than ICS) , with Airplane Mode ON, AutoSync OFF, no apps installed, and no wakelock, I get around 1% battery drain per hour.
And all of the screenshots are with no apps installed/no syncing. With apps installed and syncing, the battery life is much worse obviously.
I don't know, I've just REALLY felt like there's been a definite decrease in battery life over the past few months.
I know for sure it used to be a lot better.
I understand that batteries wear out over time, but should it be happening this early to me?
I have an original, launch day HOX, that can handle the lowest underclocking (the processor is in 'FAST' mode), although I have experienced lots of overheating in the past during just very light usage.
Could you guys share the kind of battery drain you get with Airplane Mode ON? Over the course of an hour or few?
I never use airplane mode so I can't shed any light on that. You did say that you've experienced overheating, and overheating causes battery life to decrease both in the short term and the long term. It's the arch nemesis of the battery you might say.

Well I did not use airplane mode. However, I turned off WiFi mobile data. Also lowered my brightness to then lowest setting. I have plenty of apps and probably some wake locks. I did this at 11pm and 60%. I have an alarm set for 730am. When I woke up it was at 54%. So you could possibly have a bad battery. My phone is a refurbished one so I don't known when it was manufactured

I never use airplane mode unless I'm actually on an airplane, but I generally get around 2-4% drain per hour with normal use.
Just out of curiosity have you tried Greenifying Maps, Gmail, Facebook, etc, anything that syncs? Just this has brought my battery from 8hour to 15 hour usage. Has your carrier recently added LTE? LTE is a huge battery drainer.
Secondly, while I'm not discouraging sending your phone in. I doubt they'll do anything. Batteries deteriorate over time. It's a well known fact and companies will rarely replace them unless it's DRASTIC, 2 hour battery life for example or phone no longer turns on.

Yes, I have tried Greenifying apps, but the battery problem persists even when no syncing apps are installed/autosync is off.
And LTE shouldn't cause problems with battery drain during Airplane Mode. But regardless I have always had good LTE service in my area, so I don't think that's the problem.
If I DO send my phone in, could they just refuse to replace the battery and send it back? Or will they tell me they won't replace it before I send the phone in? What is the process for sending a phone to HTC?
Call them. They're good about explaining what will happen. They'll usually tell you then and there if it's covered. If they won't cover it, they will usually contact you and let you choose if you want them to fix it for a cost or send it back.
Keep us posted as to what happens.

Ok, so I called HTC today.
The guy on the phone was pretty helpful and nice. I simply explained that I've been experiencing much higher battery drainage than before, how the battery would drain a lot even on airplane mode, overheating problems, etc. Also mentioned that I had tried factory resetting/running without any apps and nothing had helped. I said that I had read that since the battery is not user-replacable, HTC would replace the battery for free. The guy also asked me how long my battery lasted. I gave him some stats like, "With data on and no syncing, around 2-3% per hour" or "With airplane mode on and in standby mode, around 1% per hour" but he kept asking me, "How long does your battery last?" He told me to just tell him a certain number of hours, so I said "10-12 hours with 40 min screen time". That finally stopped him asking. He read me their policy, and asked my information about my address and email, etc. And then it was done.
Also, he used my IMEI to check my warranty status, and apparently the fact that I bootloader unlocked my device raised no concern or mention. :good:
Pretty simple, just keep your cool and keep it simple.
Basically, just tell them the battery life has been really bad, and that you want it repaired. Tell them about how long the battery will last (in hours) and give an approximate screen-on time. Don't worry about fancy stats or figures.
Of course, now I have to actually send the phone back, which is supposed to take around 10 days to repair and return.
Any advice on how to cover up my tracks of S-OFF, unlock, supercid, etc?
I don't want to raise any suspicion, but I also want to be able to re-unlock my device if they ever RUU it. I'm already running the 3.18 RUU by the way.

I would just leave it at the 3.18 RUU with S-OFF if it was me. You could technically flash a modified HBOOT, but if they really cared that much, I'm sure they could tell your bootloader is unlocked regardless since your IMEI is surely captured when you unlock via HTCDEV.
Ive had my htc one x for maybe 5-6 months which is almost the longest ive ever been on one phone and i love(d) it, but its always been doing something very strange and aggravating that seems to be getting worse. Battery drain has always been a problem for me with this phone but ehh i can deal with it, but once my phone gets down to about 14% which is does often because of the draining it starts acting real funny with its power and sometimes goes from 14 down to 5 in an instant literally out of no where and as soon as i plug up itll go right back to 13, or itll shut down entirely at 14% but i can just cut it back on, or itll shut down in the middle of me doing something and i have to charge it for about 5-10 minutes before itll even come back on. The latter happened last night btw. No matter what combination of roms/kernels i try this always seems to be a problem. I really cant deal with this anymore and its to the point where i wanna throw my phone into a wall and just buy another one, which im seriously thinking about doing at this point. If such thing has happened to anyone before or you have insight on this can you please help before i just give up hope completely.
What you have described is normal for our device. Remember that the battery percentage is just an estimate of your actual charge. In addition, you find your phone shutting off around the lower percentages as a result of the device attempting to prevent damage to the battery. That is what the HOXl was designed to do.

Do you allow full charges after these "forced shutdowns" occur? This should cause your battery to recalibrate.

The battery behavior on this phone has been interesting. I have the battery last over two weeks on airplane mode and I've had the battery last just a couple of hours with just a stock setup. There are so many factors that play into this. I work in an area with very little to no signal reception and my battery life goes crazy and the phone can get really hot while I'm there so I've seen the best and worst.
What I do to counteract this bad behavior:
1. Charge prior to 40% (I've had the phone go from 40% to zero instantly before)
2. Consider your signal reception and either try out different radios or use airplane mode to reduce erratic battery drain
3. Install a 3rd party app like batterycalibration (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration&hl=en) and use that when things get hairy (I calibrate every two weeks or so and that does the trick for me.
My phone has been like this since I pulled it out of the box. With a little management, it is just fine. You have seen it before but I'll say it again, you have to get through a few charge cycles when flashing a new Rom to get back to normal.
Hope this helps. It works for me and I work in a cell phone reception hell.

When a new ROM or kernel is flashed you need to let battery settle for at least 48hrs before you get super worried about battery. If possible during that time let device fully discharge then charge up to 100. Please use a battery monitoring app and then see what's causing the issues. With proper config hoxl will get good battery life. There is always the chance its hardware issue but doubtful as battery prolly would of completely failed by now. Also check your screen brightness settings. Hope this helps

The battery behaviour you described is completely normal if you understand how a battery of this type works, and if you understand how the software (especially the display of battery percentage) works in conjunction with it.

So youre telling me having the phone get to 22% and instantly drop to zero and power down is normal? Makes no sense at all. Also i cant get it to charge too 100% for anything. So if theres no fix to this, anybody want a one x with a troublesome battery?
What I'm saying is the battery percentage displayed by the software is never exact, it's only an estimate based on the voltage level of your battery. Your battery sounds like its long term life (capacity) has been decreased over time and possibly bad treatment (allowing the device to discharge too much too many times).

Depends on what you define as "normal". Such behavior is certainly not unheard of (although you particular collection of symptoms may point to a more serious issue, which I'll get to later). Couple things you have to remember: the battery meter is far from accurate. Being off by 10% or more is not unusual (completely normal). So jumping from 5 to 13% as you mentioned is not out of the question. The battery voltage is not actually jumping around, just the % battery number that the phone is assigning to various voltage readings. Reading errors happen, and if a jump is noticed, its just the meter correcting itself.
Which brings us to the other point that should be kept in mind: the battery % is not a "real" measurement. Its just a number assigned to various voltages to give the average person a sense of how much battery is left. Its a completely fabricated and artificial measure that just gives some relative sense of when a user should charge their battery. Phone makers just decided to use a system that average people would understand, like the fuel gauge on a car. Zero doesn't really mean zero (or anywhere close), but reporting in voltages would make no sense for most folks. Also, as we all well know, just because (for example) it took you 12 hours to drain the phone to 50%, does not necessarily mean the phone will last another 12 hours to drain the remaining 50%. It all depends on what you are doing with the phone during that time. Which leaves the question: What does the % battery really mean? Really, not a heck of a lot.
On the other hand, the battery failing to charge to 100% is troublesome, as is the apparent frequency of the meter drops and the fact that the issue remains after various ROM flashes. Leads me to believe there may be some hardware issue going on.
The short answer: IMO while some of the individual symptoms are not unusual, the seeming frequency (you haven't exactly quantified this, but it seems relative frequent just based on your descriptions) may suggest a larger issue, but its not certain.
Thanks it explained a lot but it happened again today, went to the store with ~36% on the meter and walked out, haven't touched it at all, phone was completely dead. Tried to charge and it went to 6% and stopped charging, all signs showed it was charging but it was stuck on 6. Then it started climbing again and reached about 16% and actually started losing charge while on the charger. Switched over to my portable battery charger i just got and it held the charge at about 5% for ~30 minutes, which is what it was when i plugged it in and started to charge, then it stopped againand during the whole process the phone was getting very hot. Yea im getting a new phone :/
Hello all, so the original battery on my Google pixel, almost 3 years old, went to complete hell. It turns off in about a minute once unplugged, despite 100% battery life. So I went and replaced it with two Amazon bought batteries. The first one (definitely not OEM) had the same issue but my pixel would at least last about 10 minutes of regular use, unplugged, before shutting down. So I thought it might be the battery but the second one has the exact same issue. The second one at least looked like OEM with the exterior but since it came from Amazon, it's not 100% certain.
The problem is that the phone charges very fast, like 100% in less than 15 minutes and then discharges 10-20% in just a few minutes. If I last below 70% that would be out of the ordinary.
Is it possible that it's not a battery issue but maybe a different issue? A friendly person on another forum suggested that my core or graphics IC is overheating, attempting to throttle down; and then just shutting down when it looses the battle. Which makes absolute sense since the phone mostly shuts down when I'm playing games on my phone and usually turns off just under 80%.
I also found out that a recent google play store version was found to be the culprit for the extensive battery loss for other folks. Could this also be reason?
Are there any tests I could do to further determine the actual cause?
Thank you.
Two ideas:
- Deactivate Play Store app in Settings -> Apps & Notifications -> All -> Play Store -> Deactivate
- To rule out a damaged third party app as a cause for the battery drain (which actually is quite unlikely in your case), you can reboot into safe mode. For that, long-press the power button and then long-press 'shut down', confirm with OK. At the reboot, all non-system apps are freezed. Then you can check if the battery behaves differently.
Did you try charging your phone for about two hours longer, even if it says it is already at 100%? Maybe just the battery percentage measurement system is somehow damaged.
But you already tried that I guess. So maybe somebody else got another tip for you.
do you try flashing stock image? maybe the battery cache is in trouble
Similar to OP, my Pixel XL had started to have some odd issues beginning almost a year ago. It got REALLY bad in just the last six weeks or so when it would shut down at relatively respectable battery percentages (something like 23% - 57%, randomly).

When I deactivated ("Disabled" in my settings), there was no change in behavior. In fact, I had forgot I did that until giving things about a week and had forgotten when the phone behaved the same way, LOL (I just now re-enabled it).
I also tried the Safe Mode (which I had not previously known about - thanks!), and the phone still died out pretty quickly from a "full" charge.

I had also done this several times. The really odd thing is many times I will have it on the charger all night or for several hours, and when I take it off it is only at a very low percentage - from 1% to 16%. !!! Of course more often than not it does get to a higher percentage.

Thanks, gonzakennyn - I have not done a "stock" image, but have factory reset the phone, with no joy. This was actually one of the things I did months ago even before it got really bad, because I wondered if maybe the battery cache or something at the kernel level had deeper issues.
Hopefully the OP might have had better luck or found something...
All these complaints sound like power supply issues.
Use the phone while it's in the charger, and there's no overheating/throttling/shutdown, right?

Unfortunately, I did not find a solution. After replacing the battery twice I pretty much resigned to my fate. I'm going to hold out until Pixel 4 comes out.
Once fully charged, I could use my phone for browsing or watching videos for about an hour before I get to around 30-40%. Then I could leave it unplugged all night and wake up to my battery at 1%. It actually stays that way for a bit.
However, if I use my phone to play any games, I could only use it unplugged for about 10 minutes. My phone will power down without fail at 80% or below only when I play games. Weird thing is, whenever I power it back up, my phone will be 1% but despite that it could last quite a while.
As post-mortem mentioned, I could use my phone while charging without issues so maybe it is a power supply issue, in which case, I have no idea what I could do.
When it's not plugged in to a charger, the only power supply is the battery. Hence, I feel that even your "new" battery is not new.
So a little update all. I updated my phone to the latest Android 10 patch and the battery life has gotten significantly better. It's still not enough to last all day but it can last probably 6-8 hours with minimal use. If I use it constantly, it might last two hours.
I am no longer tethered to my charger when playing games, which is really good news and all the prior issues with the phone shutting down ~80% is gone.
Perhaps the previous Android patches contained faulty code?
I would do fresh install and see if problem resolves. Fresh install fixes all sorts of software issues.
So my battery woes aren't as bad as yours but I did get to the point where I had the battery replaced. I went to uBreakiFix and I have no idea what battery they put in but the bottom line is a brand new battery didn't help much. I got a little better battery life but not as much as I had hoped. I'm assuming that it's either due to the apps I have installed and my usage or the phone is getting old and something is drawing a little more power than it used to. I have not gone to the trouble of factory resetting to see if that would help yet.

Factory resets didn't help my old issue. Updating to the latest Android os helped immensely. As stated above I no longer have the initial issues. I estimate I now have about 70-80% capacity, which is not bad at all considering I bought my battery through Amazon for around $20.
I thought if you got your battery replaced at ubreakifix, then they are obligated to fix your issue or refund you your money.
