For my own weirdo reasons, I currently prefer to run the stock ROM on my g-Tablet. However, I absolutely need to run some applications that are only officially available from the Android Market. There are some .apk's for one of them online, but they're not the current version and don't update correctly.
I'm willing to do some hacking, but I don't actually want to flash a new ROM and want to make the fewest changes to the stock setup.
Is this even possible?
I'm with you on this...all I'm looking for is root and market on my stock.
Yes, it's possible.
You're going to need:
- some way to get at least temp root (suggest z4root)
- the GoogleServicesFramework.apk and Vending.apk
- some way to mount /system/app as R/W (suggest root explorer)
1) install z4root
2) install root explorer
3) use z4root to get temp root
4) use root explorer to make /system/app R/W
5) use root explorer to copy the apk files to /system/app and set permissions to rw-r--r--
Do market fix.
Jim
P.s. easy way to get the apks is to download one of the enhancement packs that has the individual files and unarchive and get the files.
Thanks Jim. I will have it give it a try tomorrow when I get my gtablet.

I felt the same way after trying some of the other ROMs I wanted to keep the stock ROM to receive updates from VS ota but still have access to google gmail, market, etc. This file will help you do that. I had posted a post with detailed instructions on how to do it.
You will need clockworkmod 8 but don't need to root your device, perhaps the site moderators will help you find the post with the details. Angry Bird was the only issue, but once you run the market it will recognize you need the update and you can install if from the market app. Sometimes when an app I want to try needs root permissions I use z4root and perform a temporary and when I reboot it goes back to normal.

Good luck and enjoy your G-Tab!

Unfortunately, the most important apps to me are only distributed via the Android Market.
Way back in November I intalled Market, and it still works. Follow the links in this thread:

I did steps 1-3 of that this morning on a stock OTA 3588 gTab (from woot) and it "just worked".
Some differences, tho - mostly that I used adb and DDMS for a lot of the file manipulation because I'm familiar with the SDK tools from doing regular ol' Android app development.
Also, I only ever "temp rooted" using Z4root, so what I'm left with is an otherwise stock, non-rooted gTab with what appears to me to be a full Android Market.
I know this is short on detail, let me know if you need specifics. I'll be away this weekend, but can post when I get back.
-jim (one of them dang wooters...)
nevermind
I just got a second g-tablet, from Woot, it arrived late yesterday. They need to be completely charged before the first boot, and that took all night. I booted and updated this morning before work.
I will go through the same process that I used to enhance my first g-tablet. Some of the things no-longer need to be done, like the OpenGL fix and the Flash installation. The other things that I may try are the enhancement pack and a different kernel.
I purchased a second g-tablet specifically to mod it. I really want to install Linux on it, but I don't believe a Linux install is fully functional (yet). So I may dabble in a few of the customized firmwares. I saved the update file before installing it, so I can always flash back to stock.
I will update the original thread on customizing a stock g-tablet, if needed.
I ran into trouble downloading some of the needed apps to do the market install. I am uploading them in the hope that you can then download them from the g-tablet.
z4root:
z4root
AndRootFile:
AndRootFile.3.0.beta
I didn't use AndRootFile because I already have the Root Explorer app that I purchased when I owned a different tablet. Let me know if there are problems with this app.
Edit: It appears that the stock browser will not allow direct download of these apps. You will then have to download the apps on another PC and transfer them to the g-tablet. A micsoSD card or a USB pen drive will work.
Market fix with Stock rom
If you do a market fix with the stock rom do gmail and calendar work properly
Thanks for this thread. It was very helpful. I was able to temp root my tablet and apply the market fix to my otherwise stock gTab. Everything seems to be working fine. I haven't yet applied the patch for the Tegra 2 apps. Still waiting to see if it makes that much of a difference.
I was very pleased with my ability to figure this all out as this is my first android device, so working with the tools is all very new to me.
On another note... is there a plugin, or browser that will allow websites that use java to work properly? There are several educational websites that I use with my students that I would like to be able to run on my tablet.

Gmail is part of the Market install, and works fine. I don't think that Calendar is included, though.

Maybe you just need to change the browser settings. Open the browser, then select the two gears icon in the upper right corner. Make sure that the "Enable JavaScript option is checked. also, change the "Page Display Settings" from Tablet to Desktop.
You may then need to restart the browser, or even reboot. If that doesn't help, try a different browser, like Dolphin. In Dolphin you also need to change it to Desktop. It is called the user-agent in Dolphin.
Root is required for this application. Thanks to DesignGears & Chainfire for putting in the work for root to be on our phones.
Please try method 1 and 2 before posting that it doesn't work. Let me know which one worked for you in the comments.

Open FDroid and download AdAway.
Some have reported that this AdAway will install the host file without any issues.

Method 2 :
Download AdAway here - http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23060877490004670
(All credit for the link goes to mrRobinson)
After you have installed and opened the app -
Click "Download files and apply ad blocking"
The app is going to crash, don't worry!
Re-open the application and click "Download files and apply ad blocking" again
This time it will give you a pop up saying "Copying of host file failed", once again don't worry!
Now click the refresh button in the top right, and now for the last time click "Download files and apply ad blocking"
You will now be told that it was successful and to restart.
This is how I got it to work, I apologize if it does not work on your device.
Please click the thanks button if this worked for you.

I tried to get the the app from that website but they want you to download it through a store. And I don't know about others but it hangs on downloading icons or something. I downloaded my AdAway from f-Droid, but I've seen the same crash behavior.
After the crash, the download and apply worked on the first try.
(The first time, I had to flash back to stock and re-root. The second time applying AdAway blocking took a couple of tries before it went through (6 more specifically))
you can try adaway 2.3 official
or
AdAway-release_Build-10.09.13
the new release is working like a charm

Thanks for the feedback. I will update the thread to have both methods shortly
I've found supersu leaving dozens of sudaemon's around which sometimes breaks root entirely (until you reboot) or sometimes you can manage to get su to work and then kill apps.
Adaway seems to potentially be a leading cause of this, or maybe it's just the obvious victim, I'm not sure. But I often find it's complaining it could not apply the hosts file, so I get into a shell, find a bunch of stray sudaemon's, kill them, then it's happy again.
I think there's still some tweaking that can be done for su on 4.3.
All I did was install Fdroid, then
Go into to terminal and type this
su
restorecon -R -v /data/data
Then install adaway and run as normal

Hi all. I've successfully rooted my Fire 10 (2017) using retyre's excellent offline rooting guide. I never (and still have not) connected to wifi and sideloaded 5.6.2.0 from what was previously at 5.5.0.0
After root, I've installed Google Play Store with forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77125897&postcount=80
Installed Xposed Framework Installer APK, but have yet to install the actual Xposed SDK because that requires an internet connection to retrieve the SDK. And I haven't downloaded a root file explorer yet, either.
Anyways, I've read and read before doing all these things, but there's one more thing to figure out before I finally connect to wifi.
What's the correct way to prevent Amazon from pushing a ROM OTA? I've seen 2 different implementations posted around the forums.

How to install Xposed & Flashfire for easy backups and ROM updates
How to enable Amazon packages (apk) updates but prevent the ROM updates (keeping root & rootable rom).
1) Edit /system/build.prop and change ro.build.version.number to have "9" as the first value instead of "5", as recommended in this link
2) Reboot
3) Enable OTA by ensuring that /system/priv-app/DeviceSoftwareOTA/DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk is renamed back to apk from apk_
4) Reboot
At this point the Fire will download a lot of apk packages, and will update Amazon system components (keeping FireOS version the same).

This method worked for me after rooting using the offline root guide. When I go into System Updates and click check, it just says "Check for updates failed." It does require root, so make sure to use the "su" command before the others or it will give you an error. I am on 5.6.0.1 by the way.

The methods can be ranked in terms of update prevention:
1) DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk_ blocks anything an everything, forever and ever
2) build.prop version blocks FireOS ROM updates (no threat to root), but does not block individual Amazon apk updates for various packages, so something like Amazon store may still update
3) firewall method is intermittent, and often people complain that it would still update even with the firewall blocking - this one is absolutely not recommended
I will do the build.prop edit then. Thank you!

I said Firewall because he didn't have root. A non-root firewall works, but isn't the most reliable.
Since you have root, go ahead and delete those two apps altogether. Use something like Titanium Backup, and then uninstall the OTA Apps. Make a backup in case you ever want automatic updates again.
I'm trying to run vanced YouTube on my pixel 7 Pro. Vanced manager manager still working on my op9pro...but I need to delete all remnants of the stock YouTube app from my device.
I'm unlocked and rooted. Titanium backup shows the error "can't locate APK". I'm trying to do it manually with root explorer. The YouTube and YouTube music APKs are located in /product/app/YouTube. I cannot delete these files and root explorer won't allow me to change the permissions of these folders. I also tried adb but that just hides them, I need to remove any and all files associated with the stock YouTube system app.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm not looking to hide these apps, I'm looking to permanently remove them from the phone.

@rester555, @EtherealRemnant, and some others got it working well enough....and I don't think they had to go through the trouble of deleting "all remnants" of the stock app. You might be used to a bit of an outdated method or particular to your previous device method because I believe it's been a long time since you had to remove the stock app to get it to work -- at the very least on my Pixel 5 A11 rooted, I used Vanced manager and it would merely overwrite/replace my stock app; I just had to make sure to turn off auto-update as Google would insist on re-installing/updating it back to stock...
In any case, the thread below is where a bunch of them got it to work well enough on the P7P (without the need to remove the stock app, i believe)

I literally installed ReVanced yesterday. All I did was disable YouTube, build with ReVanced Builder, install micro G, and install the patched APK.

I'm not using revanced builder. I'm trying to use the manager app on my phone. Maybe I'll try the builder instead

I'm not familiar with using the builder, but I saw EtherealRemnant have success with it, so that's why I @'d him. Glad he/it helped!
I got it working. Although I'm rooted, I had to use the non root method with microg in order to get it working
Even though I got it working, I'm still kind of pissed I can't delete certain system apps off my device. Huge reasoning for rooting in the first place is to have ultimate control over my device. Can anyone shed some light on why I can't remove certain system apps or provide a working method to do so?
Just did the "Install as root" option and it installed just fine. I did uninstall all updates followed by installing apk of recommended version with no issues on my end

Root these days is systemless. The best you can do is disable apps or uninstall them from your user profile with adb.

i know it's old and EOL, but can't Titanium Backup "freeze" system apps? It's been a while (years), so I'm working off of memory and just basing it off of what I kinda remember and can't be too sure...
Open a Command Terminal, grant root access by typing "su"
This command works for me to delete system apps (youtube for example):
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.youtube
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.apps.youtube.music
Have you tried that one?
[MODULE][Terminal] Debloater v17.3.2 - Debloat Systemlessly!
[TERMINAL] DEBLOATER Debloat your phone Systemlessly! Debloating can sometimes be device specific. OEM apps can sometimes be a trash to a user but not to the other. So I decided to make a module to Customize the uninstallation of a system app...

I don't know if it works on A13 but that's what I used to use on my OP9 to freeze apps, yeah.

TiBu still works. I'm using it currently. Does a fine job of disabling or freezing system apps as needed.
