Running stock 2.3.3. Even with call volume maxed out I can barely hear the person on the other end. I have tried with multiple calls to multiple people and get the same thing.
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
Anyone experienced something similar?

i have that problem, i tend to use speaker more. hopefully a mod comes soon
I'm running CM7 RC1 with Voodoo kernel, not sure if the Voodoo sound patch has any part in this, but the volume on my phone is quite loud when using Skype. But in a noisy environment, I'd rather use a pair of noise blocking earphone or headset.
Yea i can barely hear the other person as well. I dont know if its just in my head but it almost seems like it started after the 2.3.3 update

During a call turn the volume down and then back up. When you turn it down you won't notice much difference but you will when you turn it up again. It seems that the volume settings thinks it's at max when it isn't and you need to reset it by turning it down.
Hmm ill give that a shot

Could be your service provider too.

Don't think so. The same issue was present with the N1, kernel developers implemented an audio boost feature that really helped this issue out. Hopefully we will see the same for the NS soon enough.
I would LOOOOOVE for an audio boost similar to the N1 to be implemented for the NS.

[Q] volume of the front speakers? Help please
hello all
does anyone know the phonecodes for the nexus s (service mode)? I want to increase the handset (speaker to the ear)!
in the galaxy s, he is **#*#197328640#*# but not work
nexus s CM7 netarchy 1.2.7
sorry for my bad english
does anybody know how to raise the volume of the front speakers?
I'd like to do this also. Default max volume is too low, sometimes hard to hear what people say.
exactly!
It must be possible to increase the volume
with the voodoo kernel only the speakers on the back work
I have the same problems, in call volume is too low :-( and its not the provider because with my Galaxy S the volume is okay.
Phone speaker is quiet but with my bt earpiece I can get it loud enough to hurt my ears.

i don't know about you guys, but i have no problem hearing the call even in busy ( noisy ) streets environments.
using any of the 3 methods:
normal ear speaker
back speaker
BT headset
on 2.3.3 stock, no mods of any kind
temporarily solution:
During call set volume to min and then to max and then it's OK. After reboot problem is back.

Only volume probs I come across 2.3.0-2.3.3 has been the other person's provider (att, Boost, Metro) so far.
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone has found any solution to overcome the CM7/MIUI low microphone gain issue during voice calls?
The other party on the line barely can hear me during voice calls.
Have searched a lot and haven't found any fix except for the hit mute/unmute during call to temporary (only applies to that call) fix the problem.
Is there any other solution, like replacing system audio driver files from stock/other ROM to fix the low microphone gain issue permanently (well, at least till the next flashing)?
Never had any issue on stock Froyo or Gingerbread. However, not intent to return to stock due to this issue.
I'm on the July 15 baseband with Wind mobile in Canada. Currently using MIUI 2.3.2 with Faux123 048 kernel. Tried stock CM7, Trinity kernels, no go.
My wife has the same phone/system, however she is still on the June baseband. Same low Mic issue applies to hers as well.
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, using GetRIL with the recommended, matching v21e RIL on July 15 baseband on mine. Problem still present. :-(

I would love for something as well, this issue seems to be out there for some others phones as well on CM7, i believe their intentions were to reduce background noise. Either way, if anyone steps in that'd be great. I have searched through build props, and system folders looking for anything that says "mic" I got nothing lol. If anyone has any thing they think I should search through I have time today so give me any ideas.

Couldn't agree more! I found as well that it has something to do with CM7's reduced microphone gain values to prevent voice distortion. Read about library file libaudio.so might as well "involved".
It is not that significant, however I'm using the phone frequently for voice calls and always mute/unmute is a little annoying.
I customized, fine tuned everything else to my needs and if this thing would finally get sorted as well i could lay back and fully enjoy my device (kidding, still would messing around with flashing around).

Exactly my thoughts, that's my only true complaint about CM7. People don't seem to realize it though I don't know if they are the type that always talk loud or what lol... but I definitely noticed and know its true cause I restored my 2.2 left my self a voicemail & recorded with voice record... and then went CM7 and left a voicemail and voice recording and it was crazy different playing through speakers and through earpiece. So I don't know what else to do....

yup, I tried GetRIL and tried all the different RILs (rebooting after installing each) and no difference. It's definitely something in the CM code. Somehow it doesnt react well with this phone's mic setup.
hope it gets fixed cause i'm never going back to stock.... soooo slow

Hi mt3g,
Read that you're using ICS. Just wondering if you feel any improvement mic/voice-wise compared to CM7? If so, which kernel are you using it with?
Thanks in advance for your input!

Part of this problem is the ROM and part of it is the kernel. CyanogenMod had this really bad at one point and they fixed it a little with a kernel tweak and then improved it a little more with a change in some of the audio drivers. So, it is hard to get it right. I have not really ever had this problem and I have been running MIUI GB based with the Trinity Kernel by Morfic (if that helps anyone).
Ya all of what I presumed it seems to be a hit or miss but it isn't just the g2x, which made me believe that it really is an issue even though people don't have it. I don't talk loud on the phone but maybe I need to start lol... either way willing to deal with it... p.s. I had the issue on all miui roms all kernels no matter what I tried.

Bump
There's an excellent initiative from r4d14n7 resolving this issue.
If you affected by this low mic problem, please read the OP in his thread:

and leave your feedback for the CM team. Hopefully it well be sorted.

Updated my Nexus S from Gingerbread to ICS 4.0.4 (OTA), but ever since then, the incall handset volume has been extremely low - so low that I can't even hear the person on the other end if I'm outside of any 'quiet' (library quiet) room. Has anyone else experienced this as well?
Any ideas on how I can fix this? I've read that the app "Volume +" might be a solution, but I would need to root the device and its also not a guarantee. Would love to hear from someone who has had this problem and how they rectified it...
Couple of details:
- Carrier: Rogers (in Canada)
- OS: ICS 4.0.4
- NOT Rooted
- Samsung Nexus S
Thanks a lot!

Volume+ won't fix your in call volume, believe me. So don't go that route, you'll only waste your time. The Nexus S has always had a very low volume, but I didn't notice a change from 2.3.7 to 4.0.4 to be frank.

Thanks for the heads up. If you didn't notice a change, then I'm wondering why I did. Do you think its worth it to re-install 4.0.4?
Do you know of any workaround to have this resolved if I did root it?

I find it strange myself. If you look around you'll see the internet is littered with "complaints" regarding the Nexus S low volume, dating back to the Gingerbread day too. I'm not sure a re-install of 4.0.4 will help you.
I have never really found a workaround to increase the in call volume, so if anyone knows I'd be interested too. Rooted or not, I don't mind.
Maybe problem of headset? I don't use the stock one, I have 2 other headset, one of them was too low ,other one was just too loud even hurts my ears...

Not headset, handset. As in the phone itself.
Oops, sorry, I guess I need a new glasses....
But I don't have problem with mobile itself as well, with KI1 radio, I even have to vol- When I during the calling...

I think, in your case maybe first to radio, try older one as we know ICS will update your radio to KI1

It's a known "issue" though, the Nexus S always had a very low in call volume compared to many other phones. It's not absolutely inaubdible, but it's definitely not your Nokia brick either. In a crowded place it gets difficult to hear, even with your ear pressed firmly against it. The speaker however does decently, but then everyone can hear your conversation.

More than once. The radio signal has little to do with the volume however.
I have same issue too, network call mic volume is very low, yahoo or skype or network call with loudspeaker on mic volume becomes normal
I love cm10 but I have one issue which is obviously in the title of the thread. I can not turn down the earpiece volume for a call and people across the room can hear my conversations. Anyone have this issue? Is it known? I did a search here and it didn't turn up anything. Is there a fix? Thanks!

Known bug that's mentioned on almost every page of the CM10 nightly build thread.
Click volume button once, use the volume slider on the screen.
Slide it all the way to the right, then back all the way down to the left.
Volume should be a bit quieter now, but still loud.
Have to do this each time as the setting isn't saved between calls.
Thanks, but I have a job and a busy life so I don't have time to read threads. I figured that's what the search button is for and as I mentioned, I tried multiple searches pertaining to the problem. I did what you mentioned before I posted this and it is still way too loud. It's so loud that it's uncomfortable to have even a short conversation. I was hoping there was more of fix but I guess I'll be using a different rom until then. Thanks for the answer nonetheless.

Has the low volume issue been fixed? I saw on the ATT forum that "Task" fixed it but now suffers from call echoing. Don't see mentions of fixes anywhere else.
If its still low I will be going back to stock in the mean time.
Anyone?

flash and try.
CM10.1 has much better volume on video record than it did a month or so ago, so I believe the answer to your questions is yes it is fixed,
Is not as loud as stock, but is in stereo and much improved from where it was when cm10 or 10.1 were released.

I notice no difference in the volume with CM 10.1.1 over previous versions. I went back to stock just to see if it was a hardware issue (broken mic?) and it's not.
The issue is most apparent when uploading videos go Google+. Audio from CM video recordings is non-audible while TouchWiz video recordings are nice and loud. It's a shame too because this is the only thing I think TouchWiz has over CM.
