[Q] How does one determine which ROMS (or kernels, mods) he has? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I recently used bhundven's awesome One-Click method to flash my device. It's been a couple of days, and I am totally ecstatic!
This was the first time that I've flashed my baby in over 6 months... so, I was happy to go from Frodo (er, Froyo) to GingerBread. In the process, I removed loads of garbage from my phone -- you know, stuff that seems really cool and you gotta have it, so you download it and never use it again! What the hell was I thinking when I downloaded the U.S. Constitution??! LOL
It feels like I have a whole new phone. Anyway, back to the discussion. So, the One-Click jar is awesome. But, having been away for a while, I don't have a sense for which version of which ROM/Kernel/Theme came before/after which other.
ACTIVITY 1
I'm looking at the One-Click filename and I'm trying to decipher:
filename: SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar
SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar
?? not sure what this is trying to convey...
SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar
So, it is based on the KJ6 ROM. Somewhere I gathered that the ROM which I installed via this process is a ROM that was customized by RaverX3X.
SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar
This is beta2d of bhundven's kernel. Yo comprendo.
SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar
Ok. This bit is a tad confusing. I get the "with_Bootloaders" part {1}. But, I don't get what the "Stock-Rom" is communicating. As I previously stated, I believe this is a customized ROM...
SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar
Ok. This is the brilliant technique which Bryan (bhundven) designed to make it easy for geeks like me to follow. It was simple:
java -jar SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jarAnd, click... click... click... In other words, there's just one action associated with this technique: click! Love it!
ACTIVITY 2
So, I went to Settings/About phone to verify the changes...
Model number: SGH-T959V
Damn! It's still just a 4G. Didn't give me an S2! LOL
Firmware version: 2.3.6
This is good...{2}
Baseband version: T959VUVKJ6
Excellent... it's based on the KJ6 ROM.{3}
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKJ6-CL694130
Whoa... OK.{4}
Build number: GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6
Yes! I have Gingerbread.{5}
ACTIVITY 3
Then, I checked out Settings/Software update... (where a pop-up informed me that I have "No firmware")...
WAIT! Didn't Settings/About phone report a firmware version?
Thanks, Android, for the inconsistent labels... good enough to confuse even us geeks! (and, remember, we shall inherit the earth... and the moon... and the sun... so, lookout, Android! Your day shall come...)
Ok. I believe this is letting me know that I have a custom ROM and that I have been cut off from OTA. Excellent news!
SUMMARY
I have some time on my hands and thought that I'd look into the Android sphere again... So, I would like to examine various customized ROMs, Kernels, Themes... in general, mods. But, as I proceed down this path, I am wondering... how shall I know, at any given stage (and with the expectation that, at some point, I will have lost track of what I've done 2 days ago{6}) exactly which mod(s) I have on my device?
NOTES
{1} though I am still researching to be able to understand what a Bootloader is and why it's important... or, to rephrase, when would I not want Bootloaders?
{2} it was 2.2.1.
{3} it was T959VUVKD1.
{4} it was 2.6.32.9-Bali_SGS4G_v1.4UV.
{5} it was FROYO.VUVKD1.
{6} I have a mental disability which ensures this.

Related questions...
Which version of the customized ROM do I have? How can I determine this? Is there a straightforward way to know which mods are incorporated into each custom ROM?
Same for Kernel? How do I know which mods are incorporated?
For beta2d, I understand that the device is rooted... and has CWM 5. But, it was necessary to re-install busybox upon which I have become dependent.
And I see that there are newer versions of bhundven's kernel. I'd be happy to test features... but I'll need to know which features to look for.

That no firmware has been there since completely stock.
For the most part in the op for each ROM or kernel they list any mods and features. Other than reading the op for your setup I have no idea how to know what mods are incorporated.
Maybe there's no way to tell. Maybe someone knowledgeable on the subject will give you a better answer. Maybe I should get off my phone and get some sleep.

As 95Z28 has pointed out, I'd read the OP for the rom you flashed, in this case:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498

Let me put it another way...
Ok. Check out this scenario:
Friend wants to sell me his device. I know (because the Software Update tells me "no firmware") that it has been modified. I just don't know how... And he doesn't remember the current status (because he's such a geek... and has been modding it weekly for the past 8 months ).
Hehe...
Given that phone, is there a battery of verifications I could do to determine what's in it?

Other than what's in settings > about phone and in /system/build.prop there isn't an easy way to do it.

Well, this is something I plan to keep in mind as I develop treasures... there should always be some little something somewhere that says, "It's me! I'm here!" That would be the first point of verification when talking to support... IMHO
Granted, many times that scream is inherent in the UI -- if the user knows what to expect.

No. That means that there is no PENDING software update download over-the-air that is WAITING to be installed. So when you ask it to DO a Software Update (think of Update as a VERB here), it says... I can't... there's no update waiting...

Yes I know. And there are no ota updates for the SGS4G at this time, so it will always say no firmware as it always has.
When I say that's a quirk of the SGS4G that's exactly what I mean due to the fact if you click software update on other android phones it will specifically say no updates available, or, current version is the latest. SGS4G states no firmware instead.
So what I was saying is that has nothing to do with mods.

Question about the official upgrade
Forgive the noob question, but does anyone know if the official release will unroot your phone using the techniques and software provided by USC? I'm technically savvy but this is still somewhat new to me. I've used Odin to root my phone and upgrade to the unofficial leak. I've had a number of software crashes since. I also found out, since I didn't do proper research before jumping onto the bandwagon, after the fact, that rooting will void the warranty. I'd like to unroot it, but I just need to know if this will do it or if I need to unroot it before I upgrade. Thanks!
And within seconds, I answer my own question
Apparently, it's been reported that the official update will, indeed, unroot your phone as well. Sorry for the wasted space.

If you install the official upgrade with the Odin files it will also "unroot" your phone. I say that because it's just putting a fresh system image on your phone so of course it will be "unrooted". The better option would be to install the pre-rooted version that has the 2e recovery as well so you can install custom ROMs and such.

It is because official updates usually means a stable bugfree version of gingerbread for our devices so that it can be used as a base for custom roms or if it is good enough, use as it is rooted/deodexed.

Well usually the source for the I9000 rom releases always comes out within a reasonable time. So heres hopin we dont have to wait that long before we can grab it and start workin on some reoriented kernels.
Has anybody or will anybody flash this on to their Captivate?

I thought this was caused by Tegra 2 not being compatible with certain governors... That's what I heard anyway. Hope it's not true. I miss the freq governors.

If you want the latest baseband, you have to go through LG's flasher or the OTA update. However, this is not required for CM7. CM7 is happy with either baseband version.

Thank you very much.
Finally! Maybe now, we can fix the data issues in CM7!
A2DP!
I, for one, can't wait for A2DP on CM7. That would make this device PERFECT for me.

I haven't noticed any improvement from old baseband to new, so just flash CM7 and don't worry about the LG updater tool.
1. Nandroid backup using cwm
2. wipe using cwm
3. flash cm7 (just get the latest nightly: http://cm-nightlies.appspot.com/?device=p999)
When you flash subsequent nightlies/RCs of CM7, you can flash right over the previous CM7 flash, just be sure to wipe cache/dalvik cache and do a repair permissions before booting into new CM7 flash. At least that's my little ritual, not sure how much it helps.

[Q] Help with Gingerbread installation...

Okay I literally just got this phone yesterday and I see all this talk about Gingerbread and how great it is so I decided I want to try it. I know next to nothing about all the technicalities about this phone so I youtube'd how to do it and found this video that I plan to use to help me in the process. - watch?v=YuURgkUYn1A
So if I follow that process and use the files he uses, I should have Gingerbread and still have my connection to AT&T, GPS, and WiFi? Also, when AT&T finally does release it officially, will I be able to just go to Software Update on the menu and get the official AT&T Firmware and not have to worry about all this technical stuff again?

Try THIS link out, its got pretty much everything you want to know to get started(including vids). The only things that don't work on GB currently HDMI and on some of the roms, bluetooth. If you want to get the official OTA when it drops you will have to go back to stock, easiest way is to use THIS method. Also when GB does drop, Devs most likely will make their own roms based on the official GB.
Once your rooted and have recovery installed use THIS thread to find the ROM you want...
This is just a rough overview, so make sure you READ carefully and take your time, any question you have is usually answered in the appropriate thread.
Here is a link to the latest AT&T Gingerbread leak. Use Odin to flash it, and if you stick with the included stock kernel, everything works as it should. It looks very close to being ready for release. If you want it rooted, flash Entropy's kernel and then use CWM recovery and the Superuser zip you can find on here to install su. Then, flash the stock kernel again to keep everything working (video, bluetooth, etc.).:

Agreed, but in your earlier post, you gave some good links that show how to get started. If he reads the information in those threads, and tries out rooting stock Froyo, installing the modified recovery, and flashing some custom roms, that post shouldn't be too hard to follow.

That's legit Dman, it seems you learn a new trick on a daily basis; ports, roms and now kernels. I'm loving how the infuse development is still kickin!
So back on topic lol. Xia, Dman's CatyRom is one of the most recent GB roms (and plenty more), it's based off of the leaks from At&t. Once your ready, look into that!
Edit: Nevermind my question, dman, thanks anyway for what you're doing.
To the OP, a good AOSP Gingerbread rom that I keep coming back to is Serendipity VII. I hope that MikeyMike will still come back to update that one when we get the official AT&T Gingerbread.
You can find that here.: http://serendipityinfuse.weebly.com/

Hacks for WIND Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G?

I picked up a WIND Samsung Galaxy S 4G today. I looked in the Android Dev thread here and I don't see anything specifically for this phone.
The model number is T-959W so I don't want to try anything with hacks/roms etc meant for the T-Mobile version.
I'd be happy to supply a dump of my phone for any devs who want to play around and help us here in the great white north!
Thanks
System dump would be nice if you can provide it. I'd advice against installing any mods you found here. Good thing you're cautious
Great, thanks! I have never done a dump before so I'll have to look into how to do it. I will let you know when I do.
I see it has 8 gig internal, we only got 2 there's a tutorial somewhere for system dumps, let me find you the link.
You need to be rooted I believe.

I found the following source files from opensource.samsung.com
SGH-T959W_NA_Opensource.zip
SGH-T959W_NA_GB_Opensource.zip
Will these help XDA with support for the Wind SGS4G?
Sure but idk if our devs are gonna build you guys stuff. Also, go to sampro.pl, it is a polish site so use Google chrome to translate it, then create an account for the site, go firmware downloads for your model if you see. If you do, then post a link to the latest version.

Imaging phone
I have heard that there may be an update in August. It may be prudent to wait for this update before capturing a ROM image, in case important fixes are made.
I guess a good question would be whether anyone has had any experience flashing T-Mobile SGH-959v ROMs on to this device.
Another avenue could be to ask someone inside Samsung whether they changed much between models.

Absolutely! I'm currently taking a little break (gotta find a job... like two weeks ago.), but when the dust settles, I'll take a little look at the source and see if we can help out.
What you could start with is a diff between the SGH-T959V-TMB_GB_Opensource.zip and the SGH-T959W_NA_GB_Opensource.zip drops.
I'd be willing to look into giving you guys something fun to work with.
I'll do a series of diffs tonight on the T959W stock kernel source and the T959V sources (stock and our CM kernel).

You really shouldn't flash roms not made for your phone. If they contain bootloaders, you could brick your phone.
Hey T959W people. Looked at the source and things are looking pretty close. I'm not saying to run off and flash our stuff, but I need some info and someone with the big kahunas to try flashing some stuff.
Please be running linux. I can't help you with windows problems.
It would also be helpful if you have a usb download mode jig.
You can get one here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-download-mode-jig/
Ok Canadians! I've verified that the SGH-T959W should be exactly the same as the SGH-T959V.
There were some interesting differences between our T959V and T959W that may fix some bugs for us on T959V.
With that said, please... please... please, read all of the instructions for flashing ROMs and Kernels very carefully!
If the rom contains bootloaders, please DO NOT flash them until we can confirm there are no bootloader differences.
Like I said before, it is very common to soft brick your device. It is not the end, and do not worry if you do this. Make sure you get yourself a usb download mode jig here:

This will help you use heimdall or odin to flash stuff to your phone to make everything happy again.
You will only hard brick this device by writing the wrong bootloaders to the phone, which is why I am warning you to not flash bootloaders, for now!
With that, enjoy cm7, cm9, aokp, et alii!
I will also announce this in the android general forum!

I managed to get my Wind SGH-T959W rooted and up and running with a unofficial CM9 build, but it took a bit of work.
Firstly, I tried just about every one-click solution out there, to no avail. It's possible SOC 1.7 with rattlethecage works, but I didn't have the patience to find out whether I simply had to wait a bit longer.
I followed this guide(whilst clenching every clenchable muscle I could consciously control):
http://www.galaxyforums.net/forum/o...mission-t-mobile-galaxy-s-4g-gingerbread.html
The gist is, Odin 1.7, stock+voodoo for T959V, plus some update that I'm not qualified to describe. That should get you rooted and if that's all you're looking for, you'll have to suffer through a little T-Mobile branding on startup.
Once you got it all rooted, you'd think it'd be a good idea to toss sgs-ics on there, right? Well, no. After installing the 4G variant, it promptly set off into a boot loop which I'm again, unqualified to diagnose. The obvious solution was to try another team's version of ICS, which I indeed found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1730954
Barring some missing features, it sounds like a good alternative to sgs-ics. Though I had to go through one additional step, which I really, honestly assure you I was under-qualified to execute. When I tried to load Team Acid's CM9 r3 it gave me an assert on the updater-script, since the hardware didn't match up. Easy. Unzip the package, open up META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script, remove the first check. You know it's the same hardware, you don't need some stinkin' script to tell you it won't work.
So all said and done, I now have a Wind Mobile SGH-T959W running ICS 4.0.4 courtesy of bhundven, the Odin folks, Team Acid, and likely a slew of other contributors.
Thanks folks, and enjoy!
PS, if you want that tarball bhundven, send me a PM with some brief instructions, and hopefully you can help my fellow Winders.
