I would personally be interested in seeing a modification to take a picture and save it on the SD card on every failed attempt to unlock the phone. It would be great to see who was trying to snoop on your phone . Does such a modification already exist? If not I would like to petition someone with the ability to execute this.
What do you guys think?
I +1 to this.
In addition, if someone tried to unlock the phone manually (using pin / password / alternate option than facial recognition) then the phone will also snap a picture of the person who failed attempt.
I think this would be a great enhancement to the current security set by Android.
(do we get to patent this and make money like Apple?)
maybe it could upload the picture to email or google+ private pictures also incase you dont get your phone back or so you can use the pictures to get the phone back.
This is a totally genius idea.
regards,slymobi
This is a great idea, however I feel that it should only take a pic upon password failure. Otherwise I'd have an album of my face at awkward, low light angles.
A brilliant idea with a plethora of options to explore for it... I hope to see this idea explode into something huge for when I finally get my hands on an ICS capable phone. =)

Of course, the ICS software already recognizes failure because of low light and that should be excluded. Really hope we can get some feedback here from a developer.
One problem with this is that each app for each device is closed source. So it would have to be done one the OEM side.
Well facial recognition does not seem to be an 'app' rather part of the system itself as it is included in AOSP. It is independent of the OEMs modifications so this should pretty much be universal.

Yes its included in AOSP but remember that OEM do not use the AOSP drivers but closed source drivers. They edit the code to work with these drivers and with the included camera app for each device.

Scary stuff.
I'm so damn tired of all companies taking the liberty to just monitor our lifes just how they like, no matter if its google, microsoft, facebook, apple or HTC. What anoyys even more is how we passivly is forced into accepting it, and just shrudd our shoulders about it. Reading this, I wish I was smart enough to strike back somehow.

The offending app is HtcLogger.apk and I've only seen it in the newer ROMs - I automatically removed it before this story broke as it didn't sound useful. End of the day you just have to be careful when you install new apps (e.g. direct from trusted sources)
I really wouldn't worry too much about it, typical media hype

This is the example of how we/some of us just go used to this kind of things and started to accept things we never would have a few years back.
How exactly do you determine whats a trusted source? Obviously weve already had a bunch of malwares entering the market.
I use apps only from the company in question. 'Facebook for Android' from Facebook, 'Twitter' from Twitter, etc...only use about 20 apps all in anyway so I don't think I'm at risk
I'm not saying what's been found out isn't bad - it is - I just don't really care. People are far too paranoid these days

Im not using so much apps either, on the other hand I want to be able to try some "fun" app from androidmarket without fearing theft og my personal information.
Its not about paranoia to me, I couldnt care less about wheter or not some random dude can read my sms. But Im rather angry about the companies doing just as they like, mainly to direct commercials and ads conected to your personality. Did you know facebook, after their latest update, now saves a certain cookie after your logout and sends all urls you visit with your browser back to their server..?
Well, now Im going offtopic in my own thread.
Id like to see HTC comment on this atleast.
Again, if Facebook care if I open a YouTube video every now and then then that's up to them - I'm not interesting!!
Would be nice to see what HTC say but I'm not going to hold my breath!

so, in order to gain any kind of advantage, those apps need to know this vulnerability exists, am i right? just deleted that apk file, along with some other ones.
As the Android Police blog appears to have melted, here's Aunty's take on it
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15149588
Oh noes naughty people can access:
The list of user accounts, including email addresses (but apparently not usernames or passwords)
A log of recent GPS locations (so you can be stalked!!!!)
Phone numbers taken from recent call logs (so people you call can be stalked!!!)
SMS data, including recent numbers and encoded messages (meh if they want to read "Park 123 543" be my guest)
HTC's response:
"HTC takes our customers' security very seriously, and we are working to investigate this claim as quickly as possible," the company said in a statement.
"We will provide an update as soon as we're able to determine the accuracy of the claim and what steps, if any, need to be taken."

Remember it appears you are absolutely fine unless you install an app which is written to access the log files.
As Androidpolice says, the info could be used to clone your device, not only read some of your contacts. Now of course, you are fine as long as you do not install any malicious app, but I would even feel uncomfortable knowing that HTC can read ANY activity from my device at ANY point in time WITHOUT asking for my permission (or even after I denied that permission as shown in the video). The VNC thingie would also bug me cuz it is an app without any apparent use for the user and it does not serve a specific purpose - its just there until "someone" needs it. Now of course HTC wants to improve on user feedback and pulling it is much more convenient than asking for it, but if they want my opinion and see what I'm using they should at least ask me for it. That said, let's hope HTC addresses this problem in the very near future and does clarify why those apps are there and what purpose they serve. I will run the test app again after the next OTA for sure.

I don't think HTC is the problem.
I believe the problem is Google.

You're misssing the point.
The phone has this feature so that should you enable "Tell HTC" it can then send the info to HTC, if you don't enable that it just sits on your phone as a system log.

True, and I agree that this is not a scary thing for itself. I am not a fan of conspiracy theories, but think about a combination of things: The log is created and sits there. There is a VNC client embedded deeply in your system by your manufacturer for no reason, which gives access to your device from a remote location. I am from Germany and used to a debate about data preservation (which is illegal, in Germany), but there are other countries that have a much broader "grey-zone" for these kind of things. I wonder where those Sensations with the HtcLogger.apk are ([email protected]?). We are all running the same Android build (as long as we don't root our phones), some are affected, others aren't. I just find it weird, and I doubt that some rogue dev at HTC programmed these apk's just for the fun of it.
I am wondering if anyone can make a two finger hold screenshot that can work for any type of unlock? What this means is when you are in any application all you do to get a screen shot is hold down two fingers till the screen flashes. Is this possible I want a two finger hold screen to come alive thanks.
Typically, the only app that receives touch input is the active (foreground) one. You caould implement this feature in any given app, but to do it across the whole OS... I don't think anybody knows how to do that yet without a custom ROM.
What's wrong with the current screen capture method? It works well, and uses a command not currently used for anything else (unless you're in the camera app). Some apps do track multiple fingers on the screen already...

the current one doesnt have the proper resolution as the phone but it does the job for now.
Where did you get that idea? Screen Capture.jpg - 480x800. That's that native resolution of WP7. It actually looks bigger than the phone when looked at on most PCs, because the phone has a very high DPI.
Now, it might be nice to use a lossless compression method, but that's a different problem.

I heard that when you screenshot take a picture in the 320/480 or something similar to that resolution
Not sure where you heard that - I've followed the screenshotting tool with some interest, and it's not that hard to read the whole thread on it or even dig up the old threads - but it's not true. You might want to actually give the current tool a try, instead of asking for a new one on baseless assumptions. It works really well.
I'm still newer to Android and today realized the permissions that apps request. Before I was quick to just accept & go. I was about to install an app that is requesting a LOT of permissions. Phone calls, hardware controls (pics/vids at any time), and network communication (SMS I believe). My questions are simple.
1. Do some mods already implement certain things into itself to disable some of these features? I understand this is a mod-by-mod basis if so. Does Synergy do anything to disable this crap, anybody know?
2. How worried do I have to be about this? Will the app literally take pics and send them out without my knowledge? Or is it only the pics I take it can send out? How does this work?
3. Which of the permissions that apps request do I really need to keep an eye on and watch out for? AKA, what could take info/pics that I dont want it to?
4. Is Anti-Virus software REALLY necessary since I'm all rooted and such? I read articles saying it's useful and others saying it doesn't even provide much protection, and the chance to get something is quite rare if you only use google play/android market?
Thanks in advance for any and all help. I ditched Apple and AT&T for this thing, and with it being rooted, I am unbelievably happy I made the switch to both VZW and the S3! AWESOME phone, screen size, and customization!
Bump...
Ok, so maybe this is getting ignored because it's too much of a noob question, or self explanatory? Not sure, but I want to know how far this crap goes...To my worst fears, like hardware control can take pics any time they want and I never know about it, or is it not that bad?
Thanks in advance for any help!
It is somewhat self explanatory... just use common sense when downloading an app... If you don't think it really needs the permission that it's asking for then don't download it. For example, there's no reason a music app that plays your sdcard contents needs your GPS location, etc... Look at the reviews of apps in question also... that's your best indicator right there if the app is trustworthy or not... If it's a bad app then its going to have bad reviews.

Howdy! I'll start off by introducing myself: I'm NA (or Moon, your choice), and yes I'm pretty dang new around here. For a long time now I've been lurking around without an account, and I figure it's about time I make one.
So I'm glad to be here and hope to get involved and contribute as much as I can to this community in the future.
But for now... Moonkik.
Foreword:
This kik mod has been my precious project for a few weeks now. Before this, I'd never done anything with Smali and barely any android programming to start with. However, I'm an avid kik user and familiar with Pikik and Ghostkik, so naturally I got curious and ended up taking apart Ghostkik and meddling around. During this experience, I stumbled upon the potential for my original features, listed below.
Last week however, I started feeling guilty for piggybacking off Ghostkik and finally started over from scratch. After adding back all my favorite features (and some of my own), I turned my attention to theming. I'll admit, I'm guilty of color coordinating this with my personal phone's background colors and keyboard colors, but nonetheless I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The theme isn't flawless yet but I'm still pretty proud.
Standard Mod Features:
-Fake camera
-"Delivered" verification prevention
-"Read" verification prevention
-"Is typing" disable
-Image forwarding prevention
-All emoticons
Original Features:
-Text Colors (only visible on my personal friends for now)
-Rainbow Text (must enable text colors too)
-Notification privacy options
- No user icon
- No user name
- No message content-Square Notification Option
-Easy Update Button
(More to come! )
Theme:
Dark Red
Tentatively Planned Future Updates:
- Custom text colors for each of your friends
- Multi-line notifications (can display long messages)
- Message history editing (iffy on this one. Could take a while)
- Message backup / restore (in case you need to log in to another device and want to be able to log back in to Moonkik and still have your messages)
And, yes, you can use this app side-by-side with stock kik.

====================================================
Welcome back! It's been quite a while since I first started out here! Things have changed very much for the better!
For starters, we're already up to Moonkik8 and a good number of the planned features have been added.
The catch is that some have been added to Moonkik and others have been added to... Matrik!
I've gotten the wonderful opportunity to head up their development now and I feel like that's where I'll be spending a large amount of my time in the future.
That being said, I'd like you to take notice that I'm only going to be releasing future updates when I just happen to have something to share, simply because the vast majority of my time is being focused on Matrik right now.
Be sure to check out #1matrik if you're interested.
Also, be warned, all mods made before early 2017 will have lost the ability to fake camera pictures, and unfortunately that includes Moonkik.
If you need anything, my PM is always open. <3

That's not necessarily a Moonkik issue, it's most likely some other factor. Perhaps a problem with your defaults? I only say this because my friend had the exact same problem with his stock kik.
I've had MoonKik installed for a while now but haven't had a chance to test it, but I finally got around to it this weekend. I find that the option to send gallery pictures from camera does show as camera in MoonKik but on the regular version of Kik it still shows gallery. Also, when I go into the Kik sites and search for some apps (like Chat Now) they do not show up, but they do show in the regular Kik.

Be sure to read the new update, the Fake Camera was patched by kik a while back. Unfortunately, all old versions of Kik now show "Gallery" when sending camera pics. Also, keep in mind that Moonkik is on an old update (like all other modded kiks), so some of the new features won't be compatible with it.

What exactly does camera spoofing do? Super-curious... ?
Yes. I feel like I explain this quite a lot, actually. This app is old. Some parts don't work because of Kik's patches. I haven't touched it in more than a year, and don't plan to ever again.
Have you ever handed over your phone to someone just so they can see the latest meme or the cool picture you took? I have made a way to do this without being concerned what they will do on your phone. With this app, they will only be able to see what you select.
Get it on the Play Store
Get it on Labs
How to use:
1) Make sure that you have some kind of lock screen. Pin, Password, Fingerprint, whatever
2) Go to your gallery, select some photos or videos and tap share.
3) Select the Secure Photo Viewer
And you are done! As soon as you press your lock button, the photos will pop up. Your friends won't be able to get into your phone until you unlock it again.
If you have any questions of feedback feel free to contact me in any way!

I've been looking for an app like this for years!! Thank you. Google's pinning idea isn't wrong but you're still able to use the complete app like close picture and browse through all folders of the gallery.
Maybe it is possible to integrate this into gallery so it is possible to choose to lock the chosen picture or the folder it is in.
This is what I've been looking for forever. Thanks a lotttttttt
I will try it.
I love the icon.

Interesting question. As far as I can tell you cannot share a folder in android. Still, the app will accept multiple pictures. I think that your gallery might support sharing all photos in an album. If not, you can still go into a folder/album in your gallery or file manager app and select all files there and share them. Most apps offer a way to select all files in the current folder. It should work as long only pictures/Videos are selected. Good luck and I would love to hear if it worked out.

I have taken a better look at this. Some file managers indeed allow you to share a folder, but they first create a zip file, which you can share with others. But as it isn't a picture, it won't work. Simply opening the folder and pressing select all will allow you to share all the pictures with the app and it will work.
For example Google Photos on the other hand indeed doesn't allow this as far as I know. You can use the multi-select feature to quickly select images, but there is no option to share a whole album, so you have to multi-select each photo. Even though you just have to hold down your thumb on the bottom of the screen and it will continue scrolling on it's own, this might take quite some time.
So the answer really depends on what you are using. If you let me know, I can try to find a better way.
Also, thanks to all of you my app skyrocketed to over 2 000 installs within 4 days! This is amazing!
I've tried the app on 3 different devices (Samsung, THL and Asus; 2x 4.4.2, 1x 5.0). On all 3 the "folder sharing" worked fine when using each device's respective stock gallery app. I could even select multiple folders to share. (The only limitation seemed that the folder must not contain too many files. Folders with 300/500 (iirc) pictures could not be shared.)
When using Simple Gallery or QuickPic (old version) on the other hand, I could not find a way to share a folder.
Being able to quickly share a folder is really nice, I have to say. This would probably be my favorite usage scenario for this app.
One problem I do have tho, is that I find the app to be a bit too easy to dismiss. As soon as the home or back button is touched, it's back to the lockscreen. This could get a bit impractical, especially with not so tech-savvy people. If I hand the device to somebody who's not used to smartphones (yes, people like that still exist ) (or a kid) to view, let's say, 30 vacation pictures, it's almost guaranteed that at some point they'll accidentally touch home/return and thereby end SPV. Then they would have to hand the phone back to me, I'd have to unlock the phone, reselect pictures/folder, relock, and hand it back to them so they can view the rest of the pictures...
Imo it either should be a bit harder to leave SVP (like maybe having to double tap/long press home/return) or it needs an easier way back into the SVP-selected pics (without having to unlock).
Also I don't really get why there's an "or pin this app" option. Granted, I'm still mostly using Kitkat, so I'm not really that familiar with the pinning feature. But I was under the impression that your app is supposed to be a better alternative to pinning, so why include it??
(hope I didn't sound too negative here really no offense meant)

I was away for a long time and also needed some time to look into the folder sharing, but I couldn't find a solution that works on newer versions on android. The home button also can't be overridden for security reasons, but there is definitely something I can do to make it relaunch after closing, or at least offer the user an option to do so.
App pinning solves this too, as a pinned app can't be closed by the home or back button. So if you pin an app, you basically can use only this app unless you unpin it and unlock the device. If you pin your gallery, others can still go back and look at other pictures because it's the same app (gallery). If you pin the SPV instead, they won't be able to see anything else as they can only access the SPV and it only shows the selected photos.
