faux kernal camera crashes? - HTC Sensation

It is a known issue that faux kernal may cause the phone to freeze up, requiring battery pull and reboot when you press the power button to turn the screen off while using the camera app.
Do others also experience this if the screen turns off on its own due to inactivity time with camera app running on screen? What about if camera app is in background when screen goes or is turned off?
Does faux kernal need a camera fix similar to the one for bricked?
Thanks.

Yes buddy its a known issue that faux kernel freeze phone manytimes, but camera crashes fix is not available, have u wiped cache and dalvik cache before flashing kernel ?

I did superwipe when I installed the kernal as part of the ARHD ROM so I think I am covered there.
My issues seem to occur only if I use the camera app. I was intending to ask if the scenarios I described in the second paragraph of post 1 are part of this issue, when it is experienced by others.

Any comments about whether these scenarios are considered part of the known problem?

Bump.......

Yes , you must use back button to exit the camera so that it is not running in the background. It is a conflict of faux's extreme power management, and htc's camera power management. It probably won't be fixed. Just remember to use back button to leave Camera app. Also, no need to pull battery, just press power+up+down volume and hold all three and after 5 seconds or so, it should restart.

Is your camera locking up (No pre-view picture)?

Is your camera locking up (No pre-view picture)?
When I select the camera icon, I see the camera menu in the lower part of the screen and I can even take pictures, however I see a black image instead of the pre-view photo on the screen. This issue goes away by soft resetting the phone; however it usually comes back after few days and the only way to see the pre-view image is by resetting the phone. The strange part is that the camera can actually take pictures but I cannot see the photo before taking it. Have you heard of this issue? The phone works just fine otherwise and I like it a lot.
Thanks,

Are you running stock?
I can't speak for whatever potential issues might be caused by any of the custom roms in circulation, but on a stock phone, obviously it shouldn't be doing that.
I can't imagine what hardware issue would produce intermittent preview-ability that's temporarily remedied by a soft reset, yet still manages to capture the photo itself, but there's a first time for everything.

My stock camera application (and Camera360) and camcorder applications both exhibit this behavior. A soft-reset of the device usually temporarily resolves the issue (i.e. allows me to use the camera for a short period of time). However, after my phone has been on for a while any app that uses the camera just locks up (eventually have to force close or soft-reset).
It is rather annoying. The only information I found seems to indicate that there may be an issue with the API within FroYo itself. Hopefully when we get the update to GingerBread the problem will resolve itself.
I also read something else about something to do with an LED widget that caused someone problems but I'm not using any LED widgets, so I'm not sure what that's referring to.
Hopefully there's a fix out there somewhere or we get the 2.3 update soonish.

Hmmm...
This is the first thread I've come across that brings up this problem.
My stock (rooted) phone, my mom's stock phone, and my dad's stock phone have never encountered an issue like this, but then again, maybe we were the three lucky ones...
EDIT:
That's not to say you guys are crazy... maybe we just haven't had the right combo of circumstances to expose the problem/bug on our phones.
Now that I think more about it, I did have an issue when I ran barcode scanner once, about a month ago. That of course uses the camera. As soon as it identified the barcode, and I pressed the 'search web' button, it just froze (image still visible), but the back key/screen input was unresponsive. The only thing that worked was the home button, which, instead of going to the home screen, displayed the screen you see when you are about to end a call with someone on your phone. Thing is, I hadn't made a single call that day. That screen was also unresponsive, but when I pushed the home button again, it finally got to the home screen.
I then went into manage apps in settings and FC'd barcode scanner and the dialer/phone, just in case. I even uninstalled barcode scanner because I thought it might have a phone-specific bug that I didn't want to deal with.
I don't know if there's any correlation between the yours/OP's issue, but it sounds like it's ****ed up in a similar way. FWIW.

I think I managed to fix mine by wiping my dalvik cache. On the downside, my current drain used to be around 5 when my phone was in standby and now it is around 45. On the upside, I haven't had a problem with the camera or camcorder since then.

Mine ended up being a hardware issue. Phone was exchanged with at&t. Haven't had an issue with the camera since.
Just wanted to update for the OP.

[Q] Gallery in Camera app freeze on RevolutionHD 4.1.x with Bricked kernel

I wonder if everybody runs RevolutionHD 4.1.x with Bricked kernel 1.5 having this same problem:
- Launch Camera App
- Take a picture (optional)
- Hit Gallery icon on the top left
50% of the times, my phone will freeze. I have to reinstall the battery.
I can not replicate the same problem with faux123 kernel came with the ROM.
Thank.
I love Bricked Kernel because it gives the best battery life.

this is what i did and i had no problem at all
After installing the ROM keep in the recovery, be sure to do the following:
- install Bricked kernel (Bricked-v1.5r1-beta1-528-ondmnd-1536-192.show-p1984.zip) version from bricked thread by finding the ALL DOWNLOADS
DO NOT TRY (Bricked-v1.5r1-beta2-535-ondmnd-1536-192.show-p1984.zip) yet Because i still got hang problems when using Beta 2 535
- install the camfix 1.4 from bricked thread
- after booting to the main. don't begin with the camera, go to setting> applications> ALL tab> scroll down and tap on Camera> Clear Data
do this only if you flashed ROM with 2.3.5 sense 3.5
i hope this problem will solve all your matters, give intensive use of the camera so to make sure it's working fine.
Thanks, I'll try and report later.
just forgot to note that I'm using HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio.
i don't have any idea here if will work on any normal sensation with the newer beta 2.
from experiencing sensation XE, i still recommend the beta 1, any suggestions from the normal sensation or sensation 4G users would be helpful and very welcomed.
I did what you suggested, so far no problem hope that would fix it.
Will test and report after few days.
Great to hear that, keep going.
about the incoming call black screen it happens once or twice when the phone is on sleep mode.
then the phone will go all normal.
so to avoid the 1st times, use any other phone to call your phone multiple times so to confirm that the screen will wakes up at 2nd or 3rd time when the incoming call occurs.

[Q] after camera phone wont wake up

Hi,
I have this wierd problem with my sensation. I found out that if i have my camera on and it falls a sleep it wont unlock any more. no ring nothing.buttons glow but a solid black screen. The only way out is a battery pull.
It's with photo camera and video camera mode. no other apps suffer fom this.
I've tried other roms but nothing. I currently run ARHD 3.6.7
I found out on accident but it is realy annoying me now
Any of u with the same problem or ideas?
known issue with kernel. not sure which kernels. try keepscreen app to keep screen awake if using camera so it doesnt freeze
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.tni.KeepScreenLite&hl=en
Yeah, it's bricked kernel. Doesn't matter what version you use, it seems to keep on happening randomly.

Hi,
Go into Bricked Kernel post, there is a .zip file called, CAM-FIX.zip
Flash that, magic will happen =]
Thanks guys, I've all ready flashed an other kernel and it works all fine now.
CAM-FIX.zip on the other hand is only for sense 3.5 and I really prefer sense 3.0
The camfix patch is so the camera can even function in the first place, it does not fix this issue. Without the camfix, if you try to use the camera the screen just goes black and the phone freezes. This issue however is an intermittent one, where sometimes when you exit the camera you get the black screen and freeze. Doesn't happen all the time, but it's definitely the kernel at fault.
To the OP, if in your case it's only happening once the screen times out, you could always use tasker to make it not timeout when using that app?

Camera app won't start from home screen.

I'm having an issue (sometimes), when I tap on camera icon at home screen the camera app flashes for a moment and I'm back on home screen. I've tried many times tapping on the icon nonstop, it just quits instantly.
But when I start camera app from all programs list or lock screen, it always starts fine.
Anyone experienced this?
What could cause this?
i had the same problem the other day .. my camera app would not open! it just did exactly what you described .. i even closed all the recent apps to see if it was low memory.. it still didn't work.. but a simple restart of the phone cured it ... not really sure what happened but hasn't happened again yet knock on wood

its probably just android being android .. hahaha no but seriously .. prob just a memory glitch or something
Reboot usually cure most bugs for while, but with this particular one it's interesting, that camera would start if started from lock screen or all apps list after it wouldn't start from home screen. Once it started it then starts fine frome homescreen too.
Very strange.
So yea the camera been acting up a lot lately ... It has happened 3 more times since I last posted on this thread..I have to reboot for it to start working again ... Its soon annoying!!! I missed the moments I needed to capture a pic because of it!! Not sure what the culprit is
Just remove it from your dock and place back...that is alot easier than rebooting and should work fine.

My girlfriend's camera app wouldn't start from the home screen or the app menu. I had to connect it to my computer and rename the DCIM folder and reboot the phone before it worked again.

Upgraded to ruu 1.85 - still same problem.
Same issue here. I will try and open the camera app up and it immediately crashes. It doesn't even really open, it just flashes the camera buttons and goes back to the home screen. It has happened to me at least 10 times since I've purchased the phone.
Restart is the only thing that alleviates the issue. Any ideas? Let's keep this going because it is pretty annoying to have to restart the phone just to use the camera.

But when this happens, have you tried any of these:
1) open app list (middle soft button) and then start the camera from home screen
2) start camera from app list
3) lock the phone with power button, and drag camera icon to the unlock circle.
For me either of the above fix the problem, never had to do reboot...
I posed this in a similar thread in the general section, here is a video of it happening.

Moving out of the dock had no effect, Instagram can still use the camera hardware, but the stock camera app cannot, i wonder if it has ties with the image sense chip and is on all the time and crashes due to something....

I'm also getting this problem. It only happened once in a while at first but has now gradually gotten worse and worse. Now I can't take any pictures with my One X. Even rebooting the phone doesn't fix it. It's funny that the Instagram camera still works perfectly fine though.

[Q] Camera crashing

Hi,
Since last week my camera didn't work well anymore. I used to have no problems but since somewhere last week, my camera would crash my whole phone upon starting. This was with ARHD 6.6.4. Then I flashed 6.6.7, and the problem was still present. So I cleared cache and app data, and still, no working camera.
Yesterday I flashed OrDroid 9.0.0, hoping this would clear the problem, but it didn't. When I click the camera-app (camcorder as well) my phone hangs, and about a minute later reboots itself. When clicking main camera in Z-devicetest the same happens. Using the mirror-app, my phone keeps working and gives a clear image from the front camera.
Any advices?
Well, today my camera worked several times... But I cannot get it running again. I tried lots of different things, wifi on/off, airplane mode on/off, bt on/off, full battery, on wall charger...
I'm afraid it might be a hardware malfunction. Can anybody give some advice?
I used to have a camera problem it used to crash when I opened it. Someone told me to uncheck face detection on the camera settings and it worked. You can try that
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using XDA
I don't think it's a Rom issue, did you uncheck face detection ? If it's the Rom that should do the trick. I'm running ordroid 9.0.0 and I have no problems with the camera. Make sure you uncheck face detection, if it's still giving you trouble it could be a different issue. Check your settings. Could be a problem in settings. This is known to happen if face detection is on. So uncheck it and let us know if that did the trick. Hope this helps. Best wishes!
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
Well, I thought I found it, but it wasn't the battery. When the batt is full, or nearly full, I haven't had any problems, but when ~<80% my phone just crashes and hangs or reboots...
I did uncheck face recognition and geotagging when it worked, but this hasn't fixed anything.
Are you on a custom kernel or not? I have experienced flashing different roms affects the camera as well.
Bump
Same issue on several different ROMS (Sense and Senseless). Camera will work for a while then freeze and crash to the home screen OR occasionally crash and reboot. This also happens with other camera apps, not just the stock app. If I don't find a solution soon I am going back to the stock ROM.

Just as sudden as the problems appeared, they disappeared... The camera functioned for about 2/3 weeks without any problems, but now last week, all of a sudden, it started crashing my phone again whenever I start the camera app...
