Getting Music Tags (ID3) and Cover Art to Work Correctly - Captivate General

As odd as it may sound for some, I do like to have the instantly playability of my music collection on my phone but the Cover Art is never right and no matter how many times I updated it the Music Tags (ID3), they seem to be either applied to the wrong song or not at all. Yet, on my computer they are all correct. After doing some research I discovered the problem. For one Android has a known bug in which it has a hard time reading m4a files especially ones from iTunes. And second, most software does not properly write cover art to mp3 files in a format Android can read. Since my small collection of 1200 audio files is about a 50/50 mix of m4a and mp3 it going to take some time.
You are going to need two software to get this done. Mp3Tag and MediaMonkey. Technically you could do this all via Mp3Tag but in terms of speed MediaMonkey has got it beat in the area of updating the ID3 tags.
First take all of your music from your phone and copy it to your computer. Trying to make updates over a slow USB connection is simply a waste of time. Take the files that are now on your computer and open them in MediaMonkey. Go through and use the “Auto Tag from Web” to make all of your ID3 aka Music tags are updated with the correct information. It’s best to do one Album at a time and if you just have one song of a Album, then to process those next, one by one. This will likely take you a few hours and I’m sure I will lose a couple of you reader when you think “f**k that” after you realize how long it takes to do this.
For those of you that are pushing on to the next step, select all of the music files within MediaMonkey and click on Tools > Advanced Management > Clean ID3v1 and v2 Tags. I know you likely thinking why am I doing this when I just updated them. The problem is that the tags can have differences between ID3v1 and v2 so you need to make sure they are on the same page. When they have conflicting information Android just ignores the tags and displays nothing. So in the task bar in the bottom it will process them. Will take a few mins depending on how nice or crappy of a computer you are running. Next we go back to Tools > Advanced Management > Synchronize Tags. Since MediaMonkey save all of your tags it will apply the correct tags to all of your audio files with no conflicting v1 vs v2 tags.

Once that is completed you are done with MediaMonkey so open up Mp3Tag. Drag and drop only your m4a files. While your tags are as good as MediaMonkey can get them it can add a few tags that can unknowingly cause the Artist to display as “unknown”. In Mp3Tag select all of your files and go to View > Extended Tags. You want to remove the metadata of “TOTALDISCS” and “DISCNUMBER”. Don’t know why Android has an issue with reading this, but it does and that is that.
Next select all of the files again right click on one of files and select “Optimize MP4”. This removes other unwanted tags and compacts the media data which in turn makes it more compatible with Android devices. Make sure to click on the “save” button a few times to make sure all of these changes have been applied to the m4a files.
Next, remove the m4a files from Mp3Tag and drag and drop in your mp3 files. Once loaded you likely noticed the all of your Cover Art is not showing for most if not all of your Mp3 files. So what was the point of MediaMonkey? MediaMonkey, simply has a better interface to get the music tags aka ID3 tags updated with the correct information and at a much faster pace then Mp3Tag software does. So what we need to do next is get that Cover Art updated. For me I really just cared about getting all of my albums updated so I select the mp3’s in the album and click on the down arrow icon next to the blue world icon with the yellow left and right arrow. Then selected “Cover Art > Amazon.com”. Screen shot of the location of that icon below:
Unlike MediaMonkey you will have options to pick from so different options which can make things slower, so make the Artist and Album field appear correct in the search results. Follow the prompt and it will only updated the Cover Art. Repeat the process for all of your music but use the icon to the left which should display “Cover Art#Amazon.com (quick)”. That will help speed up the process.
If you are like me you likely have been working on this for much of day so updating all the single songs can take some time. If you leave any mp3’s without artwork chances are Android is going to assign it some artwork from some other songs. Very annoying in my opinion. So I figured I would just add a white or black Cover Art image to the files I’m now too lazy to find the real cover art. If you are good with Windows Explorer you should be able to find the mp3 based of the “last modified” times that you have not added any cover art to. You can drag and drop those into Mp3Tag and select all of the mp3’s and right click on where the cover art image would normally show a preview. Select the “Add Cover” and add either the White or Black 500x500px sample images I’ve attached below in this thred. Of course you can add your own if needed. It may take a few mins to process. Once completed click on the “Save” button just to make sure all tags and cover art was saved.
At this point its time to transfer all of your music back into your Android Device. Word of warning, if you transfer it back to the folder with the same folder name Android may never notice the changes no matter how many times you restart it. Another bug in the system. For example my music folder was normally called “Music” so I went the windows theme of “My Music”. Rename the folder and replace your music with your now properly tagged music. Go have dinner, have a beer, or watch a movie, and let the transfer do its thing. When completed restart your phone and then open up your Music app or Google Music and the correct art and music tags should be showing. If not, clear the data for those apps and restart your phone again.

this should go in xda>android>general not captivate>general

no mp4a files created after cleaning id3v1 and iv2
I was following the instructions as posted but there were no mp4a files created so i continued the process. I removed the tag for disc number but there was no total discs tag either. Now there is no optimise option whatsoever. What now??

Perfect music player.... still looking

Hey guys
i've got an Omnia and I have had many Windows phones before but i've never found the perfect music player. Wondering if anyone that knows of one that will fit all the requirements below:
MUST continue to play when screen is off/device is off (like WMP does)
Must not interfere with the normal pin unlock/screen saver process
Will read and have quick access to all my music (around 14gig) of WMA/MP3's and an easy way to access it.
I don't want to install S2U2. I like the fact that to use the phone all i do is turn on and use my screen unlock code - I'm guessing S2U2 will add another layer to this.
S2P has an awefull system for dealing with larger libraries, unless im being an idiot. There appears to be no way to jump around easily and scrolling through 14gig of music takes a looooooong time.
Believe it or not, i've found WMP the best so far in that I can fire it up, select my playlist and then turn the device off and it will continue to play in the background - perfect! Sadly though, its a bit old and crap.
Can anyone suggest a player that will do this?
Many thanks in advance!!!
Nitrogen. Not sure if it fulfils last requirement. If you haven't tried it, give it a search on the forum.
most players got the option of as they call it "toggle screen" or "blank screen"
which is what you request when you say "MUST continue to play when screen is off/device is off (like WMP does)"
Sadly Nitrogen doesn't appear to support WMA
Cheers anyway!

Not really no. I want the windows pin/lock screen to take over and leave the device power saving to the operating system. If I lose the phone whilst it has one of these apps running, anyone can unlock it. WMP will let the OS turn off the screen thus invoking the Windows password screen when I turn it back on. The apps i've tried (a while ago, i admit!) didn't. If the OS turned the screen and device off, the app stopped as well..... doh!
That is, unless these apps do do this now?
I like Conduits Pocket Player: http://www.conduits.com/products/player/
Have you tried Mort Player?
I love it i use it mainly to stream shoutcast internet radio that i have saved my fav stations playlists to the phone.
It works great in the backround as long as you set the screen to turn off on battery to a timeout shorter then the device default .. I normally have it on 10 seconds.
You can also choose to lock all the buttons so it does not wake the device up or pocket dial. It works well with incoming calls and pauses the music when phone call comes in and resumes afterwards.
You can set favorites such as folders or playlists.
You can set it to resume last track position upon opening and it will resume where it left off and start playing when the app is open.
There are a ton of cool skins for the player with multiple screens for Navigation small bar that is always on top. Car screen. Default screen and a playlist screen.
If you set the play mode to changer mode it will treat each folder like a cd meaning u can leave shuffle on for your tracks and then when u want another cd just skip to the next album (seperate track and folder Next and previous buttons)
It even has an alarm clock so you can set your favorite songs to play as alarms.

Hi guys
thanks very much for a very detailed response on Mort player. Will give it a look right now!
If you want something that you can navigate through a large library quickly give KInoma Play a go. I also have an Omnia with 26gb dedicated to music and its as slick as an Ipod. Mort and Pocket Player are good music players but suck when it comes up a slick interface.

Agreed (on Mort player) ... waaay to complicated. I even managed to get it to lock me out of my own phone..... sheesh!
Anyway, i'll check out Kinoma now mate.

Kinoma won't do WMA without buying it.
Kinoma doesn't seem to have a screen lock function - although as it didn't play WMA i didn't bother looking too hard
Kinoma locked up whenever I tried to exit it.
So, back to square one.... still....

This *seems* to do everything i want. Not tested its playing yet but it has at least recognised my WMP playlists and my WMA/MP3's - always a good start! Has its own screen off which i'm not happy about but can live with. Has a 30day license and if it works good, i'll cough up the cash. Thanks for the recommendation!
As for Mortplayer..... won't even uninstall if I want to remove settings, it locks up! Had to reboot twice and would only uninstall if it left its settings - crap imo, very, very crap.
aargh.... still looking!
Conduites player doesn't seem to be able to lock the screen and disable the buttons - although i could be missing something?
Also, rather oddly, it seems to take forever to open one of my playlists which is annoying and seems to pause about every 30 seconds for about a second. Any ideas?

[APP] 3 (Cubed) Music Player. Amazing UI and Amazing Widgets!!

I did not create this application so please do not ask me to add or fix anything
I haven't seen anything about this music player and I found it by accident when I was browsing through the market. I have always hated the ugly Android Music player UI and I've always wanted a UI much like this one. Anyway, check it out!
I have attached some screenshots but there are some full videos on youtube.

I used ADW to make the 4x4 widget into a 4x2 widget and it looks awesome. Here's my current widget first then the rest are underneath it.
These are the different view modes you can use. I personally love the flip one called "Morph Flow" in the app.
This is my favorite music player! Downloads album art automatically, great way to traverse your music, Lets you Queue songs to Playlist and then save playlists. Just excellent.
All I'm waiting for is twitter/fbook #nowplaying integration.
Does cube player still have that ****ty bug where it can't list Artistes with unicode characters? Like Japanese and other East Asian characters?
The concept was great but the cube went on a spinning loop whenever I tried scrolling to a singer with unicode characters. Think it had something to do with the alphabet recognition.

I have no idea, have you emailed the developer? Every time I find a bug with an app I email the developer and almost every time they reply with something useful.
i loved this app while i had it installed, unfortunately most of my music listening is done with the phone in my pocket on random and i use the outside buttons to skip songs, which this app doesn't support, so i quit using it. stand up player though for sure, the automatic artwork download is really awesome.
Hey the headset buttons work for me. You may want to try again lol.

How long does it take for the player to load the album arts that are imbedded in idtag?
It never loads the album art on the first start for me, and sometimes only some albums are shown.
The stock music player loads all album arts straightaway but not cubed player..

I have a big problem with it.
Yesterday, it showed me wrong album arts for most of the albums. Today, it doesnt show the album covers, even tho I have them embedded in the ID3 tags of the mp3s. At the same time, all other players show the album arts properly.
I have also placed AlbumArt.jpg in each of the folders, so I removed them to see if there is some kinda conflict between the jpg in the folder and the ID3 embedded art, but its the same.
I tired uninstalling n reinstalling. I also searched for some kinda data/database on the SD card related to the cubed player, but cudnt find.
Plz help me.

Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Ohh I see...its actually the RockOn - New Generation, since its created by the same guy. This makes me realize that the album arts completely disappeared after I deleted the RockOnNG folder just an hour ago, since I thot it was for the RockOn app that I'd installed recently, since before I deleted the folder, wrong album arts were assigned to wrong albums !
That is, the RockOnNG folder had already been deleted by me, unknowingly. What the hell is the solution now?
P.S. uninstalling and reinstalling n then reassigning is not working.
I solved the issue by deleting the whole albumthumbs folder itself and then uninstalling, reinstalling and reassigning. Now, all the embedded art is perfectly displayed, only the AlbumArt.jpg doesnt work, which isnt a prob as I can embed the art in those albums.
You guys should try PowerAmp.
Its the first time I felt a music player took a huge step and included most/all wanted features.
The EQ/swiping/widget/folder picking etc are fantastic.
I can´t find sleeping in this music player

Android splitting up albums

Hiya.. I've dropped about 8gigs worth of albums I've ripped from my cd collection onto the usb storage.
Most populate and are sorted fine by album, but some for unexplainable reasons it will split up 1 album into 2, sometimes 3 different albums but all under the same album name.
Windows Media Player and Winamp don't do this on the PC and organize everything as they should be.. Any idea whats different with Android it has trouble with this basic function?

Nope, that does the same exact thing.
Mismatching data in mp3 tags is the reason. MP3 tags should have the exact same information for artist and album, look for inconsistencies in those fragmented albums.

Yup, what this guy said, for example some of the songs in an album name might have a _ in stead of a space etc.
There is also a bug in Android, where it fails to use the Album Artist tag. It always only uses Artist tag. So different Album/Artist combos show up as different Albums even though the Album is the same.
For example a Soundtrack with different artists on each track might show up as 20 different albums with one track each. Whereas it should show up as one album by "various artists" if that is the Album Artist tag.
This bug has been in Android since 1.0. If you look on the open issues you can find and star the issue.

Is there a link to this confirming that it's a bug? My music was perfectly organized when sorted by 'Albums' in Froyo, but come Gingerbread, I've hit up this issue again..
I edit my id3 tags in winamp on pc for album artist, so that way I dont have collab songs with multiple artists showing up in separate albums on device. Its a few extra steps on the pc, but it keeps everything nice and organized on laptop and phone.
It indeed seems to be the problem that albums are shown seperate when artists are different. this means that the stupid android still groups as artist even when you tell it to sort on album.
What retard wrote this crap?
Who makes android? how do you come in contact so the bug can be reported? Its in every freaking version of android this way.
On my moto Xoom this error even crashes the music player completely when going back to albums.
This needs to be fixed!!! how the hell is it possible that a bug like that is still not fixed?
they wanna compete with iOS 4 and 5? well they better start fixing these stupid bugs! this makes the OS look n00b all the way!!
Not even able to make a freaking music player work descent.
**Update**
Even when changing both song names and artist names all the same keeps getting the music all shown seperately
this problem really irked me for a long time... so much that i wouldn't even bother listening to music on my phone. what i ended up doing was downloading the free trial of "smart mp3 renamer," which is fully usable for a 30-day trial period, wiped the tags for all my albums and then rewrote them using the program.
smart mp3 renamer has a database of tags from which you must select, and for cases when they don't have it i haven't figured out how to manually input your own tags. there is another program called "tag & rename" which allows you to customize your own tags. i found using these a lot less tedious than using winamp or whatever else.
just be sure you clear whatever tags are already there before writing the new ones. i thought they would just be overwritten but ran into the same problems, so i had to do it all over again. good luck!

Hi there,
Nice music player you've made there =] The UI is clean and easy to use, gestures are handy, action bar is handy, and nice floating music controls for multi-tasking.
I do get FC when I add a folder to shortcut and go to the main menu to scroll down. The FCs stop when I remove the shortcut so it doesn't FC until I scroll, long-pressing to remove shortcut is possible.
I also notice that if I have a folder with some loose files + folders with music in it, the adding to playlist feature only adds the loose files and not the folders, is there a setting to change that?
If I may, I have a request, since it is a folder player, is it possible to add "play folder (and subfolders)" without opening it or making it a playlist? Also, could you add screen rotation capability to use the player in landscape mode?
Thanks for your great work!

Force close when scrolling the navigation drawer is fixed in 1.24.
Let me think about for a while how I could add the subfolder-thing for playlists and playback in a proper way.
On my ToDo-list:
- landscape
- a proper tablet layout
- random playback from all songs
- subfolders
- a better floating icon

Nice app, now, beat is my default player. EQ, and nice design.
On my SGS works perfectly, but I found a little bug.
In the status bar does not change the track names. All the time it indicates the title, which was played first.

(i loaded wrong script and im fixing a brick XD), but one feature i would like to see implemented (if there is an api for it that is), is google play music intergration (if possible, and allowed by google of course ), then this would meet my needs for everyday use =), as the features are really unique for a music player =), keep up the good work and ill watch your progress =)
If that's ever possible, I'll implement it for sure.
Nice work so far
I really like the UI design!
Here are some bugs I found so far on my Galaxy Note 3:
The title of the song currently playing is not being displayed in the notification, just the progressbar, time and the app icon
The folder view laggs like hell on my device (power saving off)
Oh and it just crashed xD
Usecase: install fresh app; press ok when asked to choose a root path; go up to the sd end external sd cards;choose external and a music folder;play a song; play another song from within the same folder; open the left swipe menu and press recently played(doesn't work sometimes, also the scrollbar max value is too big, causing the list to jump around when scrolling on my big screen) when you are in recently played, press back and you have an empty view; press back again (you are on your homescreen) launch the app again and it crashes.
Hope I could help you, if you need further details, just let me know =)

would you consider adding podcast support... the design of your app looks amazing!
Nice app so far. Please keep upgrading.
Very intuitive design, might I request support for copy.com on your cloud options? Oh, and I had a crash as well.
Do you can Include translucent statusbar for kitkat like quickpic app did? Please.

Bugs added to OP, all should be fixed later today.
Do you have image files in the folders ?
Currently i check & display the cover like this:
Check if folder.jpg is there. If not take biggest image file.

Oh! I actually have the album art tagged in the file. Only some have the .jpg file in the folder. Does this music player not support embedded album art (either way, it's quite the awesome music player)?

My mp3 files also embedded with lyric. Can you support this as well, please?
You app got a potential. Keep your good work!
VERY nice app!!!!
Looks awesome!!!
runs fine on my S4 (stock 4.2)
few suggestion:
1. sort order for folder/items
2. for streaming, a buffer choice.
Keep up the great work!!
I like the UI a lot. And floating control is pretty cool. Still not a replacement for poweramp but this can be my my google music replacement.
Thanks for the awesome app and hope you will bring even more features.
equalizer problem
whenever I try to turn the equalizer on application stops

[APP][ROOT][2.2+] Play Music Exporter - Get Back Your Music

Hi everyone,
Perhaps you only have a small internal storage, so you can not store your entire music library on your device. A cloud would be so wonderful. Users of Google Play Music as a music cloud are probably familiar the following problem: your music can not be played with other apps and the MP3 files are stored somewhere hidden in the system, so you can not even share a song.
What is it?
I have developed an app that can export the music from Play Music back. Even the ID3 tags are added. It shows you all the tracks and albums that are currently cached on your device. With a simple click, the app exports the track on your SD card. If you hold on a title, you'll also have the opportunity to share the title directly or to open the title with a different music app. By holding on an album, you can also export the entire album.
Note that this only works if the music is in the cache of Play Music. The Play Music Exporter shows a small pin next to the title. Either you set the music on ‘offline available' or you start playing the music for a few seconds (The music is automatically cached by playing only via Wi-Fi or you have ‘Download via Wi-Fi only’ disabled in the Play Music settings.).
Another special feature of this app is: There is no advertising, no internet permissions, no access to private data (contacts, calls, etc. ..) And all root commands are logged and can be reviewed.
The app requires root privileges.
AllAccess-Support
Finally, there is an AllAccess support! If you install the version 2.0.0 (from my Homepage) you don't need the AllAccessPlugin anymore. You can uninstall the plugin via Android-Settings -> Application.

AllAccessUpdate
've just released version 1.3.0. A major new feature of this version is the long-awaited AllAccess support. For that you need a small extension that you can download on my homepage.
I'm working on the English translation of the page. Currently, the link is only available in German. Scroll down to the heading 'download' and click the link below.
Download the AllAccess Exporter: Edit: You don't need this plugin anymore. Just activate the checkbox in the settings to use AllAccess
To use the extension, you need to update the Play Music Exporter to 1.3.0.
The update will be ready in the next few hours on Google Play.
I hope you enjoy the update.
Yes, thanks. The app is awesome. Can't Believe that here is such a silence

Maybe it's better, if this app will always stay a little secret. Google don't have to know of this Did you try the AllAccessExtension? I wasn't able to test the plugin with other Android-Versions. Especially 2.3 and below.

Not yet. I'm a bit busy now but I will definitely do.

Arcus, I'm loving this app, mate!
A few things that are amazing:
1. Playlist function - I only just stumbled across that (don't know how I missed it!) - really took the pain out of trying to Save individual tracks etc
2. The notifications feature - I use PushBullet on my PC and it's great getting those notifications coming across!
3. The ability to have all my google music on my Kindle HDX without having the Google Music app on it!
I do have a few suggestions that I would love though...
1. Add a paypal donate link (seriously, you should get some reward for your work on this!)
2. Add an "Export All" function or a queueing list (at the moment if I'm exporting one album and I select another album to export it skips any remaining songs and goes straight to the second album)
3. A progress bar overlay at the bottom (the one in the notification area is great but only helpful if I keep the notification shade down, but a progress bar somewhere always visible incorporating the queueing list would be amazing!)
4. An option for the notifications to only happen when Complete... rather than a song by song progress etc.
5. Not sure if the google metadata indicates multi-cd albums... but if it does it would be fantastic to have this included in the directory structure
6. A stretch... but adding the option to scrape song lyrics from a database and embed them in the metadata would be amazing as well!
7. Out on an even crazier limb... option to autosend to DropBox or another storage platform etc after saving.
Thanks again for your hard work!
Scott

You're not the first one to say this. My server works fine, but maybe your device doesn't allow you to download APK-Files. I know some that I can not send apk files via Bluetooth. Try this ZIP file and let me know.

You mean when exporting an album? This bug is already fixed and will released in the next version in a few days.

No i mean something different.
E.g. I want to export a playlist, but some songs are already exported. I only want to add those tracks to the exporting list that are not exported yet.

I think we mean the same thing.
That was a "bug". The exporter adds all tracks to the queue and will override songs if these existed.
I am working on a big Update, that will fix a lot of things. This bug was already fixed and i release the new version it later this week.
The exporter will only add not exported tracks to the queue.
Another new feature will be a directory chooser. You can now select an export directory for your music. This will also help people where the external SD detection dosen't work.

Yes you are right... shame on me xD
I fixed this only in the AddMusicFromAlbum(...) function and i missed the AddMusicFromPlaylist(...).
Now in 1.4.1 this should be fixed!
Great app
Hi. When I set google music to download to ext sdcard play exporter searches sdcard0 and throws up an error. Is there any way to amend this so it exports from sdcard1? Thanks and keep up the good work buddy.
