Best way to change sms tone and ringtone ? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What has everyone been doing for changing sms tone and ringtone? Ive downloaded ringtones to my phone with a free ringtone app but i cant load them.
I also remember a while back the only way to change an sms tone with switching one of the origional .wav file to a new one of your choice. Has this changed? Is it possible to add custom tones now?

Hello Floods7
I downloaded some free ringtones using "Free Ringtones" app, the one that has white chroma on blue background (don't know if it's the same
you used).
I was looking for "Yes - Roundabout" and find it. I clicked on the download button and the app went into the "Downloading page".
At the end, I slide to "MyDownload" and I found it there. I clicked on the floppy icon (Save) and finally the app saved the ringtone
in the list you find in Settings menu.
Or you can add a ringtone zia Zune, following this short tutorial:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-gb/howto/wp7/start/create-ringtones.aspx.
About adding new sms tones (or email, or other kind of alert), you can use the app wrote before to find them.
But if you want to use them, you could try this way:
to have an unlocked device
deploy "advanced config" into your phone (last version will install inside Settings menu, last position)
go to Sounds
choose your favourite tone (don't worry if Advanced config returns an error)
Unfortunately, you will not find their name, i.e. Yes-Roundabout, but a long number (can't know why......): don't try to rename them.
I tried it using TouchXplorer, but neither Advanced config nor usual Settings menu voice could find them!?!?!
Don't know if it's related to the fact that they're mp3... wp's mystery

Easiest way to do this is with Get Advanced Config for your phone This will allow you to change ANY tone on your windows phone 7. =D
To add ringtones you just need Zune and this handy guide
Hope this helps

Uhm... Today it didn't functioned... When I chose with advanced config the "new" sms tone, hothing happened when sms arrived...
And in Settings menu I could only find no sms tone chosen... Maybe I'm missing some other step (changing something in the registry or, simply, remove and reinstall advanced config... bah)

When you use advanced config it will show nothing in the actual ring settings menu of the phone.
However, when you apply it with advanced config it does save and you click ok. Restart your phone and the ring tone(s) should be applied.

I just tried: after device reboot, I received an sms with the remaining credit
and it didn't rang...
I think my phone is an obstinate opponent as its owner some times is...
I will try converting mp3 to wma, or changing some keys in the registry...

Make sure that your Alerts are set to something like Alert 1 or Alert 9 under settings, I found out that if they are set to none, the reg hack won't take place; if that doesn't work then you might have v2 or 3 drivers that have dissabled you from edeting the reg like me.

If you have accepted any current or recent HTC updates to your phone then you have the newest drivers that are imbeded in your firmware. But if you go to Settings, About and then more information; you should see your OS, Firmware, Radio versions.

Disable SMS Threading?

Hello, I did a few searches and found 1 good thread that contained a .cab file which is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395766
I have an at&t branded htc fuze.. will this file be able to disable sms threading? I want the old style sms inbox.. not the chat
thanks for the help
i also found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424133
im guessing the cab file from the above link does this?
just use the advanced config program.. theres an option for it there..
o? im gonna get the phone later this week.. will the option be there with the current OS thats built into it upon being sold at at&t? or would i have to use a cooked rom?
as londer2dend said, find and install advanced config and you will be able to switch msg viewing style... the default for wm6.1 is threaded though..

Verizon SMS Send Notify Disable Fix (Please Sticky)

This is the fix for the Verizon users to disable the SMS notification. (Please Sticky)
1. Install .CAB file.
2. Reset the phone.
This is what the CAB is doing for reference:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings SMSNoSentMsg = 0
HKCU\ControlPanel\Notifications\Default Options = 0
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings DisableSMSDeliveryReceipt = 0
Credit for fix:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=84285
Thanks for the link
No problem.
Just so people don't get confused, the very FIRST registry key that he noted that is changed is the only one necessary to change for SMS Sent Notify. The 3rd one can be turned off/on from within the SMS app itself.
Awesome ... that was driving me nuts. Thanks a mil!
Probably just a quick release to get people fixed.
Thank you! Work's great!
I started off with a stock verizon htc touch pro 2. I mainly used the TF3d sms composer. I was getting the sms sent notification like everyone else. It was annoying, hence i came here.
i installed the cab and then did a soft reboot. The sms sent notification was still there. i installed the cab again (it uninstalled then reinstalled). I did a softreset and still, the sent notification was there.
So i went and did the 3 registry edits manually and now i am only able to use the windows mobile built in sms composer/viewer (which is ugly).
regedits used:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings SMSNoSentMsg = 0
HKCU\ControlPanel\Notifications\Default Options = 0
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings DisableSMSDeliveryReceipt = 0
Of course the WM version works ok, but the TF3d one was so much prettier. I wanted it back, so i went back and changed the 3 registry edits by hand to what they were originally
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings SMSNoSentMsg = 1
HKCU\ControlPanel\Notifications\Default Options = 13
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings DisableSMSDeliveryReceipt = 1
I STILL have the windows mobile threaded text messaging (which is ugly). Is there any way i can get the TF3d sms viewer/composer back?
I have the Verizon Touch Pro2, and installed the cab, but I still get that stupid SMS notification every time I send a text. I'm used SMS-Chat program by Vito. The does go away without me having to push the tiny x on the box but still annoying.
Somebody in my office testing a Whitestone is having the same issue.
May have to give this a shot.. .
Does anyone know how to disable the screen from waking up during an incoming SMS? It used to be this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL] DisableSMSWakeUpEvent=0
But that key doesn't exist on the Verizon TP2.
You can also disable these notifications using advanced config tool.

lol good. In any forum, people get annoyed when everyone just expects others to do the work. We here at XDA love to help, but we aren't going to find everything for you.
Advanced Config tool is definitely a must install app. But it wont cure the SMS issues here. Itll cure the SMS notification for built in app, it doesnt affect the t3fd sms app. I think its the tf3d sms app that need to be tweaked or something in there. Maybe its not disabling it.. its how long you want that notification to show up... so someone could put in '0' for zero time and itll just blip and up and away!! But definitely a tf3d sms app issue.

Are you referring to how long you have to be viewing that message for it to be marked read? Because the notifications that the OP posted, have NOTHING to do with TF3d.
Ok. Been awhile since i used PHM regedit. How do i actually get to the registry? Im not a fan of the tf3d SMS platfprm. So im actually interested in disabling it and using the windows platform.

*** Secure Box Released *** 6-09-2010***

Greets All,
I am pleased to announce that I am releasing a Proper Secure Box! I know most will say whats proper about it. Very simple, this is activated using the MUI file that is not from the Korean Rom!
Cookers read below for information that could be of use to you and if you need help ready will and able.
Secure Box for ToMoUS Rom 2.13 (And possibly all English roms)
This was something that took time to get it right and functioning correctly. There is ONLY 2 Reg Entries that activate Secure Box, plus the activation of Secure box in the MUI file.
Reg Entries to Activate Secure Box:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Jataayu\Messaging]
"MessageServiceComponents"=dword:000005FE
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCMessaging]
"HTCDevice"=dword:00000001
The reason why some got Secure Box to work and some didnt, is cause these two keys are the main keys HD2 and TP2 look for. The MUI file needs to be edited to include the missing menus and ID entries, which are located in 3 sections of the MUI file. If Cookers would like more information please feel free to let me know, will provide the info.
I can do this to any rom version as my guess is for the HD2 Rom 1.66 and up, and for the TP 2 2.07.401 All languages.
To know if the ROM you have is capable of Secure Box, Cookers and Users need to look for at least one xml file: HTCMessaging_Client_PasswordManagement.xml.
If this file exists you can have secure box on your phone. (Non-HTC devices unknown).
Okay some instructions: MUST be installed on device. (Added in 6/09/2010)
Make sure HTC Messaging is NOT running or it will not install. As a failsafe turn sense OFF, shouldnt have to but better safe then sorry.
Import the reg entry in the Secure Box Setting zip file into your registry, then take the .0409 mui file and copy it to your windows folder using Total Commander. Soft Reset, and Secure box will be active.
As for not seeing that xml file, make sure you have show all files checked. and look carefully, it can be over looked.
Bugs: None as of Now
Fixes: Fixed the Error in the MUI file for VIP showing Cancel instead of Delete. Now shows correctly Delete for VIP
Current MUI File Version: HTCMessaging_Client_1_5_20143625_00
Any Questions Feel Free.
***After further Looking I have removed the CAB and placed the files, I dont know why the Cab wont install the file, even with SDKCert run first. Instructions changed!***
UPDATE I have added another ZIP, this includes a video to show you all it takes to enable it using total commander.
MMS Preview Auto Rotate Screen Settings:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Jataayu\Messaging]
"PlayerType"=dword:00000001
"PlayerFlags"=dword:00000001
"PlayerOrientation"=dword:00000002 (This Entry Doesnt seem to exist in current versions so I add it)
Soundz great
Thank you AD, would be awesome to share your findings. Thanks to Aruppenthal as well
I'm sorry for the lack of communication about this, but I have been working on a bug I found during my testing phase. and before I put this out, I wanted to be absolutely sure it was working. Let me explain in short the bug:
HTC messaging Client as most know, has two communication settings, one for Non-Secure Box, and the other for Secure Box. Now so far when I first found this, I thought I found what I needed, I was wrong. I found one key that activates Secure Box, but there are two keys, (No Secure Mode = 0 isnt it). It seems there is a permission key as well to allow to send through secure box. and to also display properly. When I first modified the current MUI file in 2.13 I had two bugs: 1) sending, 2) it was only working in traditional mode, not threaded. So I was on the hunt as to why, and I think I found the bug, or missing key. I need to do a little more testing before I show all my findings,. and as promised, release the 1.72 Telstra Enabled secure box, the 2.13 ToMoUS Secure Box. I am going to hold out on the 1.78 Korean since I need to translate it.
But its coming as soon as I am absolutely sure, just a couple of more days.
Please let me know of any issues with my current release. Cookers again, as long as credit is given, Feel free to use at will.
Sorry if I misunderstand, will this work for the stock 1.66 ROM WWE?

I didnt say these reg entries will be in your registry, I was pointing out to everyone what makes it active.
The MessageServiceComponents entry does exist, but with a 1406 value, changing this to 1534 enables Secure Box to work properly. without this entry you would only be able to view msgs in traditional mode and not threaded mode. Also your notification would not be your sms highlighted, but your mail tab highlighted.
The HTCDevice entry doesnt exist on stock roms, cooked roms it does, but its to point out to any of the cookers if they didnt know that these 2 entries are all thats needed in the rom to make it work.

I'll double check this md see whats happening. The MUI is the stock htc message client im using is version 1.5 build 2014.3625 thats from the 2.13 release rom. I will report back as soon as I get a chance to check it out, but remember if the HTCMessage.exe is running you will NOT be able to install the MUI. I would suggest doing a soft reset and attempt it again this way you know for sure the HTCMessage.exe is not running.
UNLESS your running custom rom, then you need to see in the task manager if its running, I would also suggest turning off Manila from the settings/all settings/today.

Anyone willing to try check to see if you have these settings, if not try them out. based on Chris's comment I am assuming these 3 entries are it, but I'm testing it out as well to see what its about.

Custom Ringtones
1. Copy MP3 or WMA to Zune Collection. Choose Edit, and type in manually under Genre "Ringtone". The song must be less than 40 seconds and smaller than 1MB.
2. Go to Settings -> Ringtones + Sounds, tap Ringtone. Your custom ringtone will appear under a new tree called "Custom", above "Windows Phone"
Note that it is identified by the filename, rather than the track title.
Also, you can tap and HOLD a ringtone, and Delete will be offered (but only on the Custom ones; preloaded ones grey out delete).

this will likely change until release. for the average user ringtones is one of the highest priorities - just go to the ATT WP7 forums
does ChevronWP7 RingtoneInstaller works on mango?if yes, why dont use it?
wish to the chinese vision。。。。。。。。。
With Mango, a new dir "Ringtones" was created in "My Documents" and the ringtones (for example My_ringtone_custom.wma) synch with Zune are renamed as e6.wma in this dir !
Maybe HTC users can upload a ringtone in this dir with touchxplorer or Windows Phone Device Manager and it's work ? ...
MicroSoft have left custom ringtones mainly up to the developer with Mango. The API is there, but wont be directly implemented into the OS. But you will see a hammering of Ringtone related apps on the market.

[Q] How to customize "All other notification" sound when using a custom ROM

I am current using ansar's rom on my HTC Arrive. This should grant me as much of a full of an unlock as is possible on a Windows Phone device (if I understand correctly). This implies I should be able to customize or change the "All other notifications" sound alert. I was curious as to if anyone already had a tool to do this or if they knew the registry key to edit to achieve the desired effect. Thanks!
There are a number of tools that can do this. One of the oldest is called Advanced Config, but I think it'll still work on Ansar's ROMs. I forget the exact registry path, but it's probably listed in the registry hacks thread on the dev&hacking forum.
