[Q] My phone hates SD cards. a LOT. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

So this is the THIRD 16gb sd card my phone has munched... now, i'm using cheap class 4 SD cards from radio shack (shut up, it's radio shack.), and I'm HOPING that's the issue.
Can anyone confirm or shed some insight as to why this might be happening? Is it just my "thrifty" purchasing habits or is there something to legit be concerned about here?
thankfully, after the first one I saved my playlists... now, all the apps I moved to the external SD after rooting... that's another story. *groan*.

I'm using the following Class 10 SD Cards in two different phones and have not had any issues... I'm thinking you're getting what you pay for, go with higher quality.

I've been using the Patriot 16Gb class 10 with out any issues. Its cheap and hasn't had any issues. I've flashed a few roms from it too. I noticed Frys electronics has the 32Gb for $30.

I bought some cheap no name brand on ebay...it hasn't died yet...although its only been a couple of days...

I've got a 32gb Sandisk Class 4 card for $30 and it's running like a champ. 2 Partitions on it (fat32/ext4) and it's still working like a champ

I bought a semi-cheap, $44 32G PNY from Best Buy. It's a class 4 and works fine. A class 10 is kind of overkill for this kind of device. An honest salesperson will tell you this.

I record HD videos directly on the external device and having a class 10 card is beneficial. I've had problems with lower classes before where sometimes video recording would stop after a couple of seconds and an error would appear indicating HD recording on this card is not supported.
Been using a Class 10 Patriot card (32 GB) with no problems for a couple of months now.

[Q] Adata 16GB microsd -> $27.00 CAD

Class 6. Is Adata an okay brand? Ive personally never heard of em.
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=45092&promoid=1312
Yes a data is fine, I own MANY a-data microsd cards (4 4gb class 6, 4 8gb class 6 and 3 16gb class 6)
I am currently using a class 6 a-data card in my g2 and I've had it for a couple of years.
The other cards are in various devices and none have ever had any problems either. The other 16's are in Nintendo DS cards which work perfectly.
In january I bought a 32gb class 10 patriot card, with hopes to use it in my g2 but after 16gb of data is stored on it, it craps out and corrupts all data forcing a format. Turns out patriot is aware that those cards have issues on android and wp7 and are working on a solid fix (they have a workaround they are 90% sure works, but I haven't bothered to try it and I put the card in another NDS for now. Gave up on using my g2 for music).
I give A-data thumbs up, they are cheap and reliable.
adata is good yes, though I just grabbed a class 10 kingston 8gb for 19.99

Been using this one for over a month now, works great with no problems. Im sure it's not top of the line or anything, but like I said its been working great.
I just ordered one from newegg. Read the reviews from there along with the ones from tigerdirect. A lot of people gave bad reviews saying that the cards wouldn't format or wouldn't work in their phones.
So here's hoping the one I get doesn't have any problems...
I'll give an update once I play around with it and get all my data on to it. Should be getting it sometime today...

Micro SD card deals

I went looking for a microSD card over the weekend and was really disappointed in the prices I found. A lot of the deals were already sold out at Fry's and CompUSA (Tiger Direct).
I'd like to start this thread to help others (and me ) find the best deals on expanded memory for our phones.
Any good finds?
This 16BG class 10 card was on sale this weekend at Fry's for around $10, but it was gone by 9:30 on Saturday morning.

AmazonBasics cards are cheap and great quality
You may want to look into getting Sandisk branded cards instead of just any old card.
Some of the class 10 cards out there have atrocious small block random read/write speeds, and that has been a major issue for the Nook Color world. That being said, we aren't running a complete OS off the SD card on our skyrockets, but even running apps off the card may cause speed issues.
Nook Color SD Card Thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633
All of the benchmark data in that thread summarized into a google docs spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjPE3ZAD2eVudE9vZmQ3aHlfTkFvU2J4ZUplRDJQTEE
I can't vouch for any cards other than what I've seen -- Class 10 Patriot, Class 10 A-Data, 3x Class 4 SanDisks, and an unmarked SanDisk. Everything (including the unmarked SanDisk) except for the Class 2/4 SanDisks were atrocious in running a SD card based OS on my Nook. My Class 4 SanDisks benchmarked somewhere between 20x and 40x faster than the other cards for small block writes.

This is not the first time I have heard the Sandisk 64Gb microsd works after a reformat. Now they are down to $150 for a class 6 and I am seriously about to try one out.

Which rom are you using it with? Also Class 4 seems a bit slow for me (but then again the SD slot on the vision probably doesn't go past Class 4 speeds).

Not sure about that, at best I averaged around 7.5-9MB/sec writes in most ICS roms, and at best around 14MB/sec reads (with a read ahead of around 4MB). Which I guess kind of puts it at a class 4 if you don't take into account the read-aheads.
Far as price, I'm using a 16GB Sandisk Ultra class 10 I got at best buy locally a couple weeks ago for 17$, though seems you get double the storage from the online link in the OP, but I probably wouldn't use it for swap/sd-ext.

As low as $62 on Amazon right now. I got mine for $53. You gotta watch for price breaks.

$53 is a darn good price. I got a SanDisk 64GB Mobile Ultra MicroSDXC on a best buy daily deal for $49 about a month ago. Doesn't look like they even carry it now on their site, but Amazon has it for $82.

Better check the the actual size of that card. On SD cards it is possible to fake the card so it reports a larger size than the card actually is.
You might look at this URL http://flashchiptech.wordpress.com/...ownload-to-check-flash-drives-and-memory-car/
Also it is best to format SD cards with a dedicated formatter. I like SDformatter
Also a good test program is H2testw See this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730285

Are you letting it do the default ('exFAT") format in Windows/7? You don't want that, although it works with the Samsung ROM, it won't work with Cyanomod unless you format it as "FAT32" instead. You can use the command-line switches or there's a "FAT32 Gui" program somewhere around here - I can't seem to put my fingers on the link right now, but I found it within the past few days. If you can, use the phone to format it instead of a PC, that always insures FAT32. ("exFAT" isn't supported by CYM because of the funky licensing Microsoft has for exFAT)
Aside from card size, doesnt card speed play a factor in whether these 64gb cards will work? Isnt the appropriate question "what is the best deal on a 64gb class 10 SD card that actually works"?

SD card suggestions.. Please help.

At the moment I have a 32gb ultra SD card in my s4. The SD card is damaged for whatever reason. So I was wondering, what's the best type of SD card for me to get. I spent 20$ on my sdcard. So I'm willing to spend the same amount more or less.. Don't need anything more than 32gb or probably anything over 16. Of course the more the merrier.
Thanks in advance.

I got sandisk 16gb from amazon. Paid a good $22 for it. Around the same time, bought samsung 16gb micro sd while it was on sale for my tablet.
Three months into use, sandisk just stopped working. All the photos I took over the period of three months lost with it. Mind you, I'm not tech- illiterate, so I attempted different methods to recover my data with no luck.
Contacted sandisk, and received a new micro sd through warranty. A months into use, it failed again. Luckily, I had backed up my photos with dropbox, so no real losses except wasted time.
Didn't even bother to file warranty and tossed the sd out.
Been using samsung microsd for good six months with no problem.
This is my experience, and you may have (had) better luck than I.

If you search the forums, you will find that MANY people report (and I experienced it too) that any card other than a Samsung can be problematic. I have a 32GB Class10 card from A-Data or Kingston or some other major name and it worked fine in my Atrix for a year or so. Got my S4 and put the card in it. Regularly and routinely, the phone would "lose" the card or claim it needed formatting because it was "damaged."
My Samsung card has had zero issues. You should be able to get a 32GB Sammy for about $20.

Here on XDA there are significantly less problems with Samsung SD's compared to Sandisk. Especially using the larger (64GB for example) sizes.
When using an SGS4 and in need of a large card simply use the Samsung one. And format it Fat32 when not in need of files >=4GB. Best combo of compatibility.
IMHO, of course

I am using the same SanDisk Ultra 64Gb same as you, though the first one that I bought gave me a lot of problems (Constantly ejecting, then eventually, the phone no longer recognizes it.) Then I bought another 64Gb and I never had any problems from there.
It seems that those having issues with Sandisk probably got theirs from a faulty batch that Sandisk even admitted.
