Stolen GSM Phone - General Questions and Answers

Well long story short my X10mini was stolen. Now i need to know if i can find out the phone number of the new SIM. I don't know the imei(lost box) and the thief must have changed rom cuz lookout isn't working.... (stupid cwm recovery ).
Sent from my good old Galaxy S II. Hit thx if u think i helped and may the force be with u.

Lol i higly dought that a theif knows how to flash and change a rom, let alone even open cwm, he will probaly will just sell it to a pawn shop or on ebay
HTC Wildfire S (VM) "s-off" "rooted" Stock Rom

Not sure if this feature has been supported by some ROM. But it seems pretty easy, just asking the phone to send mail/SMS (including phone #) to a pre-defined address every time when the SIM card is changed.

well it might not help now but on your next phone use avast antitheft its written into the system and cant be uninstalled unless they know your 6 digit pin they cant even accsess the program and you can command wipe locate your device via text track with gps and works real well

Hmm if i knew the imei? I will go to my operator's store and ask them to tell me the imei.

You're not going to get the number. Even with the IMEI number (which is pretty useless to you), you can't get any information.
The best thing you can do is report the phone stolen so the IMEI gets blocked and the phone becomes useless.

stolen phone
Yeah your not going to be able to track that phone with out some serious hardware which costs thousands and a telco would not do that ,not economic sense.
Have the phone blacklisted so no one else can use it.

K guys was hoping to learn the number since i can prove the phone is mine(or was lol). Thx for replies.

My touch pro stolen!!!!

hi guys...i come with some sad news...the phone which i lust over for months since it came out and i recently bought was stolen this week is there anyway to recover it... i have both the IMEI # and the S\N # documented is there a company that can tell you what sim card is currently been used in the phone??
your advice would be greatly appreciated
Wow, that sucks! Good luck!
My AT&T 8525 (TYTN) was stolen in my own home during a house party (We patted down everyone, it was missing, i swear the guys who we know did it must have hid it up their @$$) - only had the phone for about 3 months before it was stolen.
I called AT&T and had them do their thing, but nothing ever came out of that. I really don't know what to say, if you have insurance on the phone, get a police report!
Otherwise, i too would like to know what can be done (at least as precaution before hand)
sorry for your lost as well...i know they are apps out that that sends SMS to another cell phone...but..suppose if the crook does a factory reset which wipes off the app...i must say thou i would like modders to create a rom thats has a security app builtin into it...
also i was thinking is there a company online that tracks phone worldwide? i mean like it they will be able to tell u what sim card is currently in the phone??

Remote task29 as security

Hi Guys
Is there a application that could execute a remote task29 if phone gets stolen?
Most of theves are dump so would not know how to put the OS back on.
The normal way of IMEI blocking does not work, some networks will not care to block, some will not communicate to others so it will be blocked for example on O2 but not t-mobile... We all also know that you just need to sell a IMEI blocked unit abroad.
Two functions would need to be present:
Function 1 a remote wipe so you send a txt message.
Function 2 is to wipe the phone if new sim is inserted and password is not provided. Such software would need to be able to cook itself in to rom.
Second possibility for Function 2 is each time new sim is inserted a txt message is sent on pre-arranged mobile number and then use remote wipe.
lookout mobile security has that feature of remote wipe.
www.mylookout.com
antivirus, remote wipe, and gps locator all work.

It is not even remotely the same as even if you do wipe the device it is still usable, there is just you data erased. I am talking OS erased so phone does not work, so you can get it to bootloader and only if you know how.

considering you cannot even task29 unless you are synced to a computer, how do you suppose this can be accomplished???

I am not a software developer but I would say a app that works just before OS boots.
TBH task29 seems like the best idea as if you were to get the phone back you could get it back online but any app that would brick the phone remotely is what one needs.
I am quite certain something like that could be done.
why not have it flash a bricking radio from sd card or within the rom, if the command is send?
how about an app then makes the phone transform into a plane and fly back to you?
its impossible what you are asking for afaik

Bolox I can flash radio or OS from SD card. All a app would need to do is get phone to bootloader on command and have, as suggested, a bricked rom for radio on SD card. A bricked radio rom would not need to be big in size so a cab installer would work.
Its a very good idea, hope some1 can do it..
my hats off to you sir, a very good idea!
Now if there is only a developer skilled enough to realise it!

but what does this achieve for you???
A phone wiping program would wipe personal data.
What would bricking the phone do except make the phone unusable?
You'll still be out a phone...

Might be so, but if knowledge gets around that more and more phones can (and will) be bricked remotely once stolen, why steal?
I think it would be a very useful feature on any phone.
So I agree with the question for such an app.

Well why do you fit a alarm on a car when it is gone it is gone, why do you put alarm in a house when they come they come.
Something odd with this statement. Why would you think it is ok for some one who stole my phone to use it when I had to work for it?
For me best solution would be to have it wired with C4 and 5s in to first phone call boom!!!
As that would be illegal second option brick the phone.

Since when does a car alarm or home alarm burn down my house or car? That is essentially the same thing. If someone breaks into my house and steals my 60" dlp, I can't remote detonate it either.
I'm guessing that I don't understand. Maybe it is my long history with cdma phones that had esn's that could be blocked making the phones worthless (usually) once stolen.
Ill build it .... i just need a few beta testers?
Any takers?
jk.. i actually like the idea of disabling my phone if i knew it was gone for sure. .but i dont think i would be comfortable running around with this bomb in my phone unless i knew how to fix it.. and a bricked radio (easiest remote detonate solution) is obviously unfixable.
you know I was hoping this topic was headed in a different direction. like the phone company or microsoft running ras commands. like injecting and changing your files around so when you go to flash the seed will be planted for later execution. but dude if your phone gets stolen beat the punk bastards ass. or make sure you have handset protection. stupid topic. its just gonna add to the bricked my phone posts but not before they go on a couple of paragraphs of how they know what there doing but this and but that. wow then its gonna keep spreading like a ****ing plauge of dumb ass questions instead of keeping their cocksucker shut and read and learn. if your not f-ing it up, then your not learning.
i remember the sony ericsson p910, p990, and p1i could have set a sim password that works the same way the bios password works on most laptops with this feature... once the sim changed or the phone is flashed, the password must be entered to boot into the OS, personally i think this should be standard on every mobile OS...
and regardless how much times you reinstall windows, flash the bios, or remove the bios battery, the password remains, kinda annoying but at least it works
There are already some really good apps available for if your phone is lost or stolen. I don't know the names off the top of my head but I did some help on development on one 2 years ago and it was quite advanced and will send you silent text containing the new IME number if changed and the GPS location. Rendering the phone useless would be stupid in my opinion if you intend on retrieving it. let the security software do it's job and be happy to get your phone back.

[Q] How do I SIM Unlock / Debrand my phone?

I want to learn how to do it, if it is possible
It should be possible if you flash radio and hboot from some unlocked O3D...or if LG give us some new radio/hboot with Gingerbread update
Ok, thanks for the info. I guess I'll wait for some time, I'm not in a hurry anyway...
I'm considering buying this phone but have no clue how I can unlock it so I can use a different carrier. I'd like to make sure I can unlock the phone before I buy it.
Is there any information on unlocking the phone yet? I found lots of rooting topics but this is the only unlocking topic I've found.
Look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186406
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA Premium App
It seems I can't make a post on that topic as I'm too new and that's in the developer section.
It seems a lot of people are having issues with that guide and I'm too new to this to dare risking doing something with an incomplete guide.
I'm still trying to make sense of some things. I read a lot of things on how to root, but I haven't gotten a clear idea what things like ClockWorkMod is, or Romloader, or so forth.
I'm trying to get all my information before buying the phone so I can set it up with my carrier. I want to make sure I can root and unlock the phone before I get it. Also I'm trying to find information on how to back up or factory reset it if need be.
Hi,
The procedure http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186406 is complete and it works with xp. People are problems with windows 7.
Now if you're not clear on the terms I can give you a link that will explain a few terms used.
http://durgeshbhat.wordpress.com/2011/07/26/custom-rom-android-device-flash-clockwork-where-do-i-start/
For "root" You're lucky to start with the lg optimus 3d ... the bootloader is not locked.
What mean you can root in one click with the right program for your pc.
"SuperOneClick"
For "recovery Mod" clockworksmod 4.0.0.9 you will have to install the "RomManager" apk on your phone. It is available on Android Market.
For "Custom ROM and Debrand" ... Come back here when you have the phone and you'll be ready for the first two steps ... I help you if you need it !
Thanks very much for the reply.
So just to make clear your tutorial at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186406
This will debrand/unlock sim correct?
I want to make sure it will work with MTS (Manitoba Telephone Service) as a carrier.
To what I understand Clockworksmod is used for making backups and there's another one called Titanium for backing up apps and data right?
I think I'm starting to get the idea of how to do this. The ROMs part still eludes me but there's that RomManger I'm curious about too.
I have experience with other devices. I've so far flashed a PAP2 adapter, Ipod color (classic), Linksys router, and a couple of other odds and ends. It seems smart phones are a very different thing though.
Has there been any issues with the phone's 3D ability and any modding? Oddly this phone has better specs than most other phones I've looked at yet it's much cheaper than other phones too. It's actually cheaper than the Nexus S, HTC Desire, and Galaxy S II, but seems to have better specifications.
Yes it Debrand/unlock service operator.
Clockworksmod made a "backup Nandroid" that is a sort of backup of your system with all setting and applications.
Titanium backup is primarily used for backup and restore applications (. Apk)
But can also remove applications system.
Since you have experience with other devices ...
The ROM is the OS of the machine.
You can cook this ROM to make it faster, other original applications, another look ... and so.
How, and at what point do I enter in the APN settings on the phone so I can use my carrier? These needed to be manually entered on a friend's phone but I wasn't present to see how he did it.
Where do you go to enter these settings?
After you are flash . KDZ
The phone is "sim free".
So you can put any sim card it.
This is not true, it is not network sim unlocked. I wasted an entire night doing this to find out the sim is still locked

Obviously it can be done if you paid someone money to do it for you? It's just a matter of finding the right information online.

Here in states we call the provider and most cases they give unlock code for free

What's up with digging up an old topic to answer a question that's already been answered?
Anyways, just contact your service provider. They can give you the code. Just say you're going out of the country or something.

[Q] Is there a way to tell how long a Desire S has been in use?

I recently bought a desire s off ebay, it's suppose to be new but I wondered if there's anyway for me to tell for sure or does a factory reset wipe all such info?
Do the carriers have a way of finding out how long a handset has been in use?

Cut it in half and count the rings.
No seriously, there is no way I know of to check on the handset how long it has been in use. The only thing I can think of is to make a note of the IMEI number, and ring carriers and police to see if it's been reported stolen or has been registered on a network.
Edit: It's also almost impossible to use the Desire S for any period of time, without wearing off the paint surrounding the USB charging socket. Does that show an signs of clumsy cable attachment or wear?
Another edit: How easily does the battery cover come off? If it's brand new it'll be a b*tch. If it slides off easily it's a sure sign it's been on & off several times before.
The best way to know if its used..call few network providers and ask them if its black listed (even if its not) and they can exactly tell u from and till when it was used and even the mobile number used on it....all they need is the IMEI number....anyways let me know the IMEI number if u r in the UK....will try to check it for you....

Thanks for the advice guys. From what you've said I'm confident that it was brand new, but thanks for the offer mackhenri!

[Q] To root or not to root

wrong placeHi,
I am new to all this so please forgive what's probably a repeat. I have had a browse but can't find an answer to my specific problem.
I got a nearly new note 3 on e-bay and only saw the 'doesn't work in UK' warning after I bid (I know, stupid or what, but I swear it wasn't there before I bis as I was looking out for it). Anyway, I decided to take it on the chin and do what I needed to do to make it work.
I read around, this site is great, and decided that I would need to root and was quite prepared to do so but, then the phone arrived and the confusion set in.
The phone doesn't ask for an unlock Sim password or have the screen shown in the 'How to... you youtube videos' I don't have to dismiss anything to get into the phone and play with it. It's connected to my home network fine and and I can play with it to my hearts desire. It does everything in fact except make phone calls (my Dad thinks this is hilariously funny, a phone you can't use as a phone hahaha).
When I do try to make calls it says it is not registered to the network but when I have gone into settings to check it says it is!!!
I don't want to go to trouble of rooting if it doesn't need it but, what do I need to do!?!
Also there is the new kitkat thing that's thrown more confusion into my little life, if I root will I get that and if I don't, do I or should I care?
What good is a phone that doesn't make calls?
Any advice, hints or tips with this would be great x
So implying from what you've written on nearly new note 3? So it's secondhand? Why not try to factory reset it? If it that didn't help might as well flash a new firmware on it before you go rooting.

I say root that sucker! Then try the app Region Unlocker from Chainfire so that you can make phone calls.

when phones are tagged like that in the UK (especially on eBAY) it generally means they are IMEI Blacklisted, therefore they won't work on any UK network ever.
If you are lucky, it's not reported stolen, cause if it is then there can be issues, I have seen people buy stolen phones and have their GPS on only for the Police to show up about it.
My advice, is go through eBAY and claim for goods not as advertised and stolen merchandise, the seller probably won't reply to the dispute and you'll get your money back.
Lol. Root it, otherwise what's the point of having a phone you can't use as a phone
