Wifi not turning off after screen is off

My rule for wifi is to turn off when screen if off. I notice that my mail is still coming thru when the screen is off.
I'm getting a lot of battery drain. Anyone know what I can do to solve this issue?
What do you guys use for the rule of wifi to reduce battery?

what rom/kernel are you using (you should always mention thse when asking a question like this fyi). revolver just fixed this problem yesterday, try updting your rom/kernel....

I'm using the latest stock rom..I think 3.2?
How do you update the stock rom or solve this issue?

Root and flash a custom rom. Revolver 3.2.1 fixed this issue i think...

I am on stock 3.2 and no problems. Have you checked the battery info. That is the best time to check how much time the TF has been on and how much time wifi has been on.
It's true that wifi doesn't disconnect as soon as screen goes off. It maybe takes some minutes for wifi to actually go off. Also, if I am using any app that uses wifi (like radio streaming), wifi won't turn off.
Anywy, most of the time wifi will go out just a couple of minutes after screen goes off. Check settings, running apps and battery stats.

The stock rom is set to time out 10 minutes after the screen is turned off I believe. The revolver rom now has an option in revolver parts to set how long till the wifi is disabled.

There are several apps that keep wireless and/or GPS alive after screen is off. This is due to the way the OS handles apps after you stop using them. Try turning off TF then restart and without running any apps, let is sleep. Then check to see if wireless went off.

Hey, I'm having a similar issue.
I'm on a B70 running revolver 3.11 and a stock kernel and I've noticed my wifi intermittently toggles the disconnect policy to "never" instead of "when screen is turned off".
I thought it was part of the custom wifi timeout from revolver parts but according to battery usage in settings (and massive battery drain) the wifi isn't actually being switched off when the device isn't in use (tablet idle rarely shows top of the list).
I've tried flashing new roms and kernels but haven't been able to work out the specific cause of the problem or how to fix it. I would have posted in the revolver discussion to find out how the wifi timeout is managed as this might have given a clue but alas I am a noob

Grab "Auto Airplane Mode - by Don" from the market free and it does exactly that, screen off = radios off, screen on = radios on

Well my TF wifi off with screen off work except it work too good.
It work but after it goes to deep sleep it does not want to turn back on ( would need a reboot of TF for it to work again) so I set Wifi sleep policy to never and use Auto Airplane Mode.

Downloaded this app and it works a treat. I'm a bit anal so I'll keep trying to investigate why the system isn't doing what it should but its nice to have something to save the battery in the meantime.

ICS Wifi stays on while on sleep

Hi guy, my wifi won't turn off when my Xoom is on sleep. I have set the settings of 'keep wifi on during sleep' both to 'NEVER' and 'ONLY WHEN PLUGGED' but nothing happens. Wifi stays on and keeps draining my battery life. I am running rooted with the latest version of nightly 62 and I've been having this issue since 55. I have reinstalled, flashed, factory reset, wiped my Xoom.
Is anyone else having this issue? What should I do?

From my experience, wifi stays on for a little while longer after device sleeps. However, some apps in background may trigger wifi back on again. So I turn off wifi when i go to bed. Actually i notice wifi itself will not drain much battery, 1-2% for 10hr. It's the host apps sucking the juice.
I am not an expert though.

OK i've also checked it out and as you said wifi turns off after some time. My main problem now is that my battery life won't last more than 3-4 hours on wifi.
I have posted my battery stats with use of web browsing and watching pictures on gallery...

What do you mean "no more than 3-4 hours"? In your battery chart, you can get more than that even starting from 75% battery.

What I wanted to say is that I think my battery won't last more than 4 hours with wifi on and some serious usage.. from my stats as I can see I've been using it 5 hours but I only had screen on and browsing the web. I think there will be a huge difference if I am watching a movie or playing a game.. I don't have the time to check it now but I will post my results in some days..
According to my previous battery graph do you see any problem or something less from what your Xoom battery holds? Does this battery drain seems normal to you?

I think you'll find it will stay on for about 15 minutes. There is some setting in a system database (using a sqlite editor) that can be changed to bring this down. I doubt Wifi is what's draining your battery. Are you synching email via activesync or running other stuff in the background?

I am only using my yahoo mail from the EMail app. I don't know if it uses activesync. I have set it to check emails every 30minutes.

Edit: I found the wifi sleep option in ICS. Google sure did a great job of hiding it. See attached picture for anyone else having wifi staying on during sleep issues.

So there are three options
Keep WiFi on during sleep
1) Always
2) Only when plugged in
3) Never
What option to set if i want Wifi to turn of after some time of when phone sleeps. Previously i had set the option to 15 minutes but that option is not available in ICS and i m having a hard time understanding how these options work on my sensation.
Can anyone explain what each of these options do ?

My guess:
1) Always: WIFI always on no matter awake or asleep
2) Only when plugged in: WIFI always on only when plugged to power
3) Never: WIFI will be off if asleep (my current setting)

For an app to change wifi sleep policy, it needs the WRITE_SETTINGS permission.

i lose around 40 precent overnight everyday
its really frustrating knowing that i have to work with it full day afterwards
so is there any fix for this?

No idea what youre talking about. Mine only drains 20% with wifi and wifi apps running overnight.
Maybe you should look over what you got running, and if you got a custom kernel, reduce the lowest frequency of the cpu. Im running mine at 450Mhz or something.

First thing, you should get CPU Spy from the market. This will tell you if your TF is going into deep sleep or not.
If you were experiencing the same issue under HC then ICS most likely wouldn't fix the issue anyhow.
Prior to ICS I was loosing about 25% over night which just shouldn't happen. I was rooted but stock otherwise. I unrooted my TF & completely wiped before flashing ICS. One cool thing about ICS is there is an intergrated task manager widget. You can see what programs are running at any current time. There were three programs that were constantly running that I disabled. Those were PixWE, Netflicks, & My Uploads. Netflicks kept wanting me to update but I don't use it so why update it? I simply disabled it and there are a whole host of other programs that can be disabled too.
With all this being said I am only loosing 3-4 percent over night running ICS completely stock.

Try airplane mode
There's an app in the market that simulates airplane mode, but allows wifi still. After I installed it I stopped losing battery overnight. It's basically a wake-lock issue.

+1 This worked for me too but for a different reason. My TF tends to leave wifi switched on, even when told to turn off when the screen does. It could also be a rogue app as described above. Once you sort it out, overnight drain should only be a few percent at the most.

How to diagnose here
I lose ~20% overnight in flight mode.
If I go Settings > Battery I see it's a lot of Android OS. But widgets must be included in that. So then I go settings > apps > running and see a few apps running, but I can't tell which of these is killing the battery and I don't know which app would tell me ((can I run top on the the commandline?)). I will experiment more and report back. I suggest you do that same.
This should go in the first post of this thread:
To diagnose this charge before sleep, put into flight mode overnight and look in the morning to see if the Android OS has been the culprit.
Perhaps you don't need any 3rd party apps for diagnose but if you need to be available for early morning calls use a profile scheduler.

Get a new Kernel
The main problem is the kernel in ICS, a way to fix this is changing your kernel, I do recomend the Test kernel from Guevor, install from version 11 to up, test it and keep the one you like. My tf is lasting fully with keyboard, around 30hrs.

but on .17 and not .23

I'm on ICS 4.0.3 with 3.0.8-NEO though

My Nook got stolen and I'm waiting for a DroidPro to arrive so this would be on my main phone. When I've tried to flash just the kernel on it's own I've had problems before. This time I'll give it a go but am I missing something in terms of flashing a new kernel on?
I'm on ICS 4.0.3 with 3.0.8-NEO-3.0-TeamICSSGS-257174-g197c9a1-dirty (build *07)
Other than the possible battery problem it's been good. I just want to check to see if yo uhave anything more concrete to backup your decision... that a different kernel really might make any difference because that Test kernel from Guevor is very much in flux... I'd no idea which one to choose.Up to test15 now.

For convienience it would be nice to backup the current kernel first as other than battery it's working well...

ok, I lost 1% an hour last night in flight mode (6% over 5 hours) with all background apps and services killed. Does that seem about right? The interesting thing was that not all processes/services/backgrounded showed the same on different task killers...
I bet there's lots of people updating kernels when actually it's an app, or the left over effects of an app or something like that.

Use Auto Airplane Mode by DON this fixed my problem with battery drain from the wifi staying on.After 4 days of use I still hade 35% battery left!

WIFI will not shut off during sleep since JB update

I have only noticed this issue since the OTA update to Jelly Bean, so am guessing it must be tied to that. In a nutshell, WIFI will not turn off when my Infinity goes to sleep (whether I push the button to manually put it to sleep or if it times out and goes on its own). I've tried setting the Wi-Fi>Advanced>Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep setting to "Only when plugged in" and "Never", but neither work. In fact, when I go back to check those settings after waking the unit back up the setting is always set back to "Always" even when I change it. I've toggled the sleep option in the Developer Options to make sure it is allowing the unit to sleep, and I've also disabled the Network notification function, and even set the Disconnect network during sleep option in the ASUS customized settings. None of these things are working, and no matter what I do the Infinity is now keeping WIFI going when asleep, which is really eating up my battery life. I also had issues with the unit auto-rebooting after the JB update, so last night I went ahead and did a factory reset, hoping it might take care of both issues. That seems to have fixed the auto-rebooting issue, but I'm still having this annoying issue with the WIFI. I use Juice Defender on my Galaxy Note to manage WIFI, so I figured I'd give that a shot on here, but it doesn't appear able to turn WIFI off either when the unit goes to sleep.
Is anyone else experiencing this sort of issue? Any thoughts?
The unit is rooted, but not unlocked, so running the stock JB ROM.

I had the same exact problem on my Prime, luckily its not present on my Infinity.

Thanks, I may check it out. I hate to have to use a workaround, but also hate having the battery drain while it's sleeping (and don't want to have to manually power off or turn off wifi, etc).

[Q] Wifi issues and battery drain lollipop 5.01

Purchased the shield tablet with controller yesterday. It came with 4.4 and seemed to run fine (wifi speed very fast etc) Soon after upgraded to 5.01 and the problems started..
There seems to be the Miscellaneous entry under the battery settings which is using around 40% of the battery according to the info. Battery drain seems to be quite fast.
Since then, today I decided to unlock bootloader and root the device which was successful. Miscellaneous entry does not seem to appear anymore
However there is the wifi issue that has occurred since I updated to 5.01. When the tablet goes to sleep and when I wake it up, connection is lost (and rather annoying where a game needs to download 1gb+ of data). It does also occur while I am using the tablet. Wifi sometimes just disconnects (and the entry on the wifi list for my router is showing as "saved" - clicking on connect, starts it up again..
I have checked through the settings and disabled the wifi off when sleep option as well as gps only for location etc, but still to no avail.
Has anyone encountered and solved this issue on lollipop? Or is this also an issue with 4.4? I did not use it for long before updating to 5.01 hence not sure If that problem would occur then (but seemed blistering fast for the hour or so when I was testing it)

I'm having the same issue. I looked on the forums on their website and it seems this is still a problem for a good amount of people. Can't find any solutions though. Thought maybe a hard reset might do the trick but that didn't help. Pretty frustrating...

Wifi connectivity seems ok when I am near the access point, but seems that the sensitivity somewhat has been reduced since the update (as the connection was more stable and reliable further away from the router on 4.4)

Hows your battery after rooting? Does it still drain horribly?

THAT DRIVE ME CRRAAZZZYYYY!!!! the same happens to me everyday and I can't find anything about it online.. somebody please solve our problem!

I think I have partially solved the problem. The below is what I have done (Will at some point activate some of these options one by one and see which one would be the main culprit)
Settings->Wifi->Advanced Wifi - Turn off Ethernet override and turn off "scanning always available"
Settings->Wifi->Advanced Wifi - Keep on "turn wifi on during sleep" - Can turn this option off for some additional battery life
Settings->Controller->Disable "enable gamepad mapper" - From other sources it seems that this may be one of the main culprits in battery power sucking
Settings->Location->Turn this off (If wanting to keep on, leave it on GPS only)
Using the above settings, and charging the tablet approximately 15 hours ago, the battery life of the tablet has decreased by only 6% (and currently there is no - miscellaneous showing on the battery option)
There is still the issue with weak wifi (It works perfectly well when the device is near the access point) perhaps a future update may increase the sensitivity somewhat

One other important thing.. I decided to hard reset the tablet after upgrading from 4.4 to 5.01. This may help. Once this is done, then follow the steps above

Did miscellaneous ever come back for you? I did reset and changed all the settings and miscellaneous wasn't there for about 2 hours and then came back. Down to 50% battery with miscellaneous taking up 17%. I'm now wondering if this is an issue with the software or my tablet in particular...

For me, once I disabled the gamepad mapper, I no longer experience the outrageous battery drain issue, and misc. no longer appears in the battery status page and has not returned.

I didn't experience this miscellaneous battery drain until the most recent 2.2 update. When I upgraded to lollipop I did a complete wipe, rooted and unlocked the boot loader. When I updated to 2.2 I just flashed via recovery and wiped dalvic/cache.
I'm wondering if I need to do a complete wipe. I haven't seen any solutions to this, but it's strange that it just now started to be a problem for me.

The main culprit seems to be the "game mapper". - the system that maps the controller to touch screen controls. I guess perhaps updating to 2.2 turned it back on. Turn it off via settings and reboot and see if that makes any difference.

I turned the game mapper off via settings, and still got the misc. drain, so I froze the nvidia game mapper and a few other nvdia controller system apps via titanium back up and I'm still getting the misc. battery drain. I just wiped the cache, and dalvik cache 3 times, but I doubt that will do anything. It's looking like I will have to wipe and do a clean install, just seems so weird that something that didn't even change the android version number would give me this problem.
It's really annoying as the battery drains soo fast (like 20% just reading a book in my e-reader app)
before I wipe I just wanted to see if others had this problem with the latest update, as it doesn't appear too common I will do a full wipe later when I have time. I hope that fixes it.

I have the exact same issues as you describe. WiFi is about 25% of what it should be even standing right next to my netgear nighthawk. All other wifi devices work fine in the house. Disabled game mapper and my misc is still running the battery down. Tried wiping to factory with no luck. System UI crashes sometimes and the tablet freezes up constantly (especially when using Chrome and Google search). I'm thinking it could be Google play services related but not definitely sure.

So seems you peeps having same problems I have experienced and troubleshot as well, but here is one I can't figure out...
Playing game (TaiChi Panda mmorpg) which only runs in landscape mode. I will be playing and all of a sudden tablet tries to change orientation away from landscape, the screen goes black (or has game shrunk and stuck in middle of screen) then will go black and puts me at my homescreen which is non-responsive and most times I have to hard power down. I've turned off screen/device rotation and still does it. The problem also happens with other apps and stuff at times as well. I've even turned all notifications etc I could cause thought maybe something was trying to interfere.
I have the screen flicker as well at times, feel like watching old black and white movie way it flickers.
Battery lifes went up with some tweaks found here (ty vm!).

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but has anyone figured out what it causing these issues on Lollipop?
