I just recently bought a Sandisk 32Gb class 10 microSD card. I got everything set up and I've been using it for a couple of days now.
Last night I just was using msn app on the phone then it just kinda kicked me off and I couldn't use the phone properly and it rebooted and said that the disk was either blank or it has files with different file allocation. ie fat 32 ntfs all that jazz.
I can not mount the card and i cannot format it again.
So scrounging around I found a SD card adapter for the computer and wacked that in the old port. It shows that it's there but it can not be opened.
I also can not view it's properties it just acts as if it's reading for ages.
Then it crashes explorer.
i tried opening it from command
it can't be opened but after opening the path for c becomes
c:\yujuju as if someone had typed it in.
i'm almost suspicious that it was a virus sent over the network through a program on my phone.
are there known viruses capable of making your micro sd cards unreadable?
if it's not a virus and it's just some kind of error on the micro sd card...
are there anyoptions for it? (has anyone made any recovery programs for SD cards you can download using forced mount methods or anything like that?)
I know i can send it back to the place of purchase but it means i have to pay for it to be sent to another state before they'll even look at it and if they don't think it's a manufacturer fault they'll charge me for it and the time spent trouble shooting. I'm a student and I can't really afford to do that

update// I just was looking around and I read about a website called recovery-filedotnet
and i downloaded the tool. When i try and scan the SD card the program crashes.
I used the demo version... I don't think this is going to end well. sigh.

Sorry, can't help you with recovering contents of your micro SD card. If you don't want to recover the SD card contents, have you tried formatting it on the PC (sorry, I couldn't tell from your posts whether you've tried that)?
There are also known to be many counterfeit micro SD cards out there. Basically, the counterfeit cards don't have the reported storage size, for example they may have 4GB instead of 32GB, so trying to write more than 4GB will result in data being overwritten (and probably trashing of file allocation tables).
I'm not saying yours is a counterfeit, but just something to be aware of.
You could check out h2testw which tests read/write performance, but also checks whether the SD card is the reported size (I think you'll need to format the SD card first, though).

You cannot open the card on a computer. If you try and open the drive explorer actually crashes and you have to open explorer again using run
If you try and open the drive using command prompt. The drive refuses to open.
You can't access properties of the device either.
I bought it from scorptec. An australian computer company.

I opened the Microsoft Management Console and opened storage and when the card is connected to the PC it goes in an endles loop of searching for drives.
This is all very strange if you ask me.
To make it perfectly clear. I can not mount or format from the device, from clockwork mod using ROM manager. I can not mount or format from a PC using the GUI or the command prompt. Using Microsoft Management Console fails.
The other weird thing is my computer was stuffed this morning. I couldn't view the details of my computers properties. The wireless keyboard couldn't be used.
The CPU and stuff was listed as unkown.
I did a system restore to an earlier date logged in to safe mode
Even though it's restored successfully it doesn't recognise that my anti virus is running. I had to enable things in msconfig and my remote access was ENABLED!
I don't know if this was related.
But I'm feeling rather depressed after all this.
I've run spyware and anti virus and nothings picked up. So EH today sucks.
But lets just focus on the SD card for now hey? ^-^
Just to be absolutely certain it's the card, go get ubuntu live cd or gparted live cd, boot from it and try and see if the card works there. Imo it's fubar but last post questions it slightly. If you cannot get any life out of it in gparted send it back.

are they linux operating systems? Are you asking me to try and access the
device using a different? OS?
If so I'll wait till I'm in my programming class tomorrow and just boot the linux OS and see if it works.
Maybe ask my I.T teachers for assistance. But I think I knew I wasn't going to find a solution for this. I just can't afford to pay for postage costs at the moment. I've requested a returned warranty and I'll see what they ahve to say.

Since then I have perm-rooted + s-offed, flashed about 10 roms (sometimes the same ROM more than once) etc...
I have noticed that throughout this "learning how to screw things up" period, my sdcard has become nothing short of a train wreck...
I am going to transfer the files I want to keep over to my PC and format my card...
My question is:
Should I format my card via the PC or through the recovery console?
Additionally, should i reserve some space for swap or does android not utilize swap?
Also, should the card be just one large partition or should i break it down into a few different ones (system/personal/etc)?

As long as the main partition is FAT32 you can format it on an old Windows 95 computer.
Recommend formatting in the computer. A usb card reader is the best way, preferred would be one that only does MicroSD and not a multi- card reader.
One large partition is the right answer, don't try to get too creative, you'll end up outsmarting yourself.
At this time, I don't think there are any apps that need creative partitioning of the sdcard to run, so you should be good.
I also recommend that you see about picking up a class 10 MicroSD card, it will make a noticable difference in speed when accessing the card with the phone. (Playing a movie, game with sdcard files, etc...)
Make sure to always properly eject the MicroSD card from the computer before removing it, especially when you plug the phone into the computer. I've already permanently broken 2 MicroSD cards in the MT4GS by removing prematurely.
When flashing a ROM you will stay with for a while, what I like to do is insert the MicroSD card into the computer with a MicroSD reader, format the card, and put only the ROM install file on it.
Then I put it in my powered-off phone, boot to recovery, then flash the ROM.
This let's the ROM create all the files on the SDcard fresh, and helps keep you from having a mess all over the place.
I'm moving the contents of a storage unit today, and not the driver, so I'll check back here and there while we're on the road.
Hope this helps you get started, what operating system are you using on the computer? That may help to give you advice.

Okay, I haven't moved past windows XP, and i'm moving away from the windows line at this point. I've had some limited experience with win7, but i'm not too interested in investing the time to move forward in that direction.
Besides getting a dedicated MicroSD USB card reader (I have a handful of SanDisk ones) I'd also recommend getting an extra MicroSD card too.
Doesn't have to be big or fast, just a backup.
I carry my phone is a zipper-case that was for a camera. Still slim enough to fit in my pocket nicely, and keeps dirt and dust out of my phone.
It has an outside pocket, and I keep a spare MicroSD card that is freshly formatted, with only the zip for my ROM install and my most recent Clockworkmod backup on it.
I figure this way if something bad happens to my phone in the field, I have an un-corrupted clean "rescue disk" - a rescue MicroSD card.
I can (worst case scenario) power off the phone, put the clean MicroSD card in, then boot to Clockworkmod and either re-flash the ROM itself, or restore my most recent Clockworkmod backup.
(okay, I keep a few other backed-up files on it, like pictures and so forth, but it's an 8 gig card so I have the space)
Something else cool about this practice is it gets you familiar with cycling backups and maintaining a current one. You have to copy the backup to the card, forcing you to stop and deal with it - making you more used to backing up your data and making it a more intuitive process. You also end up with more then one copy of your backup
(usually 3 - one on the phone, one on the memory card, and one on a computer. Bonus points for burning a disk - and I always copy over to a flash drive too)
I'm big on backups, so it's only natural for me but doing something like this is good advice for everyone.

The only other question I have, well 2 actually are:
When performing my nandroid back up I get the following message:
"error backing up sd-ext...not found" (something to that extent)
The second question is in terminal, when I do 'df' all my file system block sizes are 4096, my sdcard block size is 32768...
To me it makes sense that my sdcard block size should match my OS block size, no?
(I'm a complete noob so please, correct me where I'm wrong)

I recently bought a new and faster Micro SD card for my Epic 4G. I tried to copy the files on my old Micro SD card over through my Windows computer; however Windows Explorer failed. I have a number of applications installed on my SD and Windows was just not happy with .gz format files, etc.
A number of back up and cloning utilities were suggested at various forums; the one that I found be the best, in terms of small footprint and ease of use, is the HDD Raw Copy tool from HDD Guru. It is free, so small and light that you can run it as a portable app, easy to use and did I mention free?
You can find the app on the HDD Guru website. (Forum rules prevent my including the link in this post.)
It is going to be part of my tool kit from here on out. I hope this helps someone.

This program will only work for two SD cards that are the same size. I tried to clone my 8Gb SD4 card to my new 16Gb SD10 card and it did exactly that: it turned the 16Gb into a 8Gb SD card.
That's because it directly copies the partitions. You need to resize them afterwards. I used minitool partition wizard (can't post links, google it), which did the trick nicely. For moving the contents of my 2GB SD card over to a 16GB one, the procedure was pretty straightforward: write contents to an image using HDDRawCopy, use the same tool to write the image to the new card, and then resize using the partition wizard.

Alternative
Using ADB, has in my experience, always! been the best and most secure way to pull/push from and to my LT18i.
It's simple, light and secure.
get sdk-tools and extract it to your ROOT drive on Windows (EG. C:/)
(Im not experienced enough on this forum to post outside links, so use google and search for Android SDK.)
In your sdk-tools folder,now make a folder called:
sdcard_{today's date}
Example - sdcard_08042013
Plug in your phone, leave it on Charge only.
Now -
Step 1 - get a DOS window (Start - Run - cmd)
Step 2 - in that window enter (use copy/paste): cd c:\sdk-tools
Step 3 - in that window enter (use copy/paste): adb devices
(that ensures that adb is running, and your device is connected)
Step 4 - if using ICS, in that window enter: adb pull /mnt/sdcard sdcard_{date}
If using JellyBean enter: adb pull /storage/sdcard0 sdcard_{date}
Wait....done!
And when you are ready to push the backup to your phone again:
adb push sdcard_{date} /mnt/sdcard
Just for the record, if you break your phone or sdcard doing this, I hold no responsibillity. You do this, it is your doing.
I am not an expert in ADB nor android phones in generel. This information is something i've picked up along the way.
This is an ALTERNATIVE, and not to be mistaken for the ONLY CORRECT way.
There are plenty of other options to achieve the same goal, this is just one of them.

Using Linux / Ubuntu to copy / clone
I'm currently moving from a 16GB to a 32GB UHS-I microSD card...and I'm just copying the files over in Ubuntu Linux (with Show Hidden Files enabled in Nautilus [the file management system])...simply enabled SHOW HIDDEN FILES in the VIEW menu.
The phone is on and active...connected by USB to my laptop.
I'm hopeful it will work, and I'll re-post / update this if it does.

Yep...that all worked sweetly! The problems other people have experienced might be simply down to the fact that a RAW copy is not taking place, so some of the "hidden" system files etc. are not being copied in Windows etc.

the thing is that you really don't need anyting to clone an SD card and to work it with android.
the problem is that people don't actually copy all the files because there are hidden files. they have to check "VIEW HIDDEN FOLDERS" on windows explorer or something like that. and then copy. it will work flawless.
no need for 3rd party stupid clone moron programs that screw your sd cards. this topic is just useless and missleading and will trick the ones who don't read the entire topic.
I think it should be deleted asap.

No this is the best way of cloning SD cards. If you have a basic seup of your card then sure you might get away with just copying files over. If like me however you have a partitioned card with an ext2/3/4 partition this is the better way of cloning cards.

I copied everything using HDD Raw copy. Now I am mini tool partition wizard. The problem i am facing is that I want everything to be present in exFat format so I can copy stuff bigger than 4GB. Now I when I create partition on the unallotted part of microSD ( I am going from 32GB to 64GB) it's not letting me use merge command as is saying it's not available in free home edition. Also the format or the microSD is showing as other not exFat.
I am trying to go from 32 to 64GB and keeping exFat as the format of the card.

No... You mistakenly did something with your cards w/o first double checking. The post wasn't bad. It's actually pretty straightforward and the best way to CLONE your cards. Don't blame the post for your mistake.

Well obviously you are the stupid one indeed, I get the feeling that you are a horse with eye-flaps on dude, don't you read what the other dudes here are saying ? It looks like you are total noon without even a basic knowledge of filesystems.. Just so you know: android is based on LINUX and WINDOWS IS NOT - IT IS A STANDALONE OS THAT IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM LINUX... So there it goes - windows uses FAT32 or NTFS - Linux DOES NOT and nor does ANDROID, and what you don't know at all is that WINDOWS FILE SYSTEMS DO NOT SUPPORT FILE PERMISSIONS THE WAY THAT THE ANDROID SYSTEM SUPPORTS IT.
So people, what I am trying to say is that, if you are a basic user and use your SD for pics and music only - the windows way would work (probably) BUT if you are using your SD for apps and etc, actually the ADB way might just be the best for you

On my AndroidOne Nokia 7.1 I noticed that the SD card is mounted as /storage/XXXX-XXXX where XXXX-XXXX is the volume's serial number.
Here's how I cloned my smaller SD card onto a larger one:
Formatted the 200GB µSD using http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm (Windows says it’s too large)
Copied using ROBOCOPY /S /ZB /V g:\ f:\
Changed the volume serial number using SysInternals’ VolumeId.exe:
PS> cmd /c vol f:
Volume in drive F is LUMIAUSD200
Volume Serial Number is 1F04-2747
PS > Volumeid.exe f: B14F-130C
VolumeId v2.1 - Set disk volume id
Copyright (C) 1997-2016 Mark Russinovich
Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com
Volume ID for drive f: updated to b14f-130c
PS > cmd /c vol f:
Volume in drive F is LUMIAUSD200
Volume Serial Number is B14F-130C
After that I inserted the new card into the phone, and voilà! all apps were happy (since the mountpoint had not changed).

Hello, was hoping someone could help me or possibly explain how the Storage is structured on the 300T.
You have Local, SD & MicroSD storage. On my Evo3D phone I have Local and MicroSD and when I use my Cloud Service it stores everything on the MicroSD. On my 300T when I use my Cloud Service it stores everthing on the Internal SD storage instead of the removable MicroSD card. I have heard that once you fill up the SD storage it will overflow onto the removable MicroSD, is this true?
Basically, I want to store games and Tablet data on the local and Internal SD storage and have all my music and movies on the removable MicroSD. Are there was to do this?
Unless there is a option in the app you are using that you can change where it puts the multimedia files you download from it you will have to move them to the removable Micro SD yourself.
However I wouldn't think anything would default to the removable MicroSD because they probably think the internal sd IS the external memory. allowing your external MicroSD to not get cluttered.
I don't have much experience with tablets or ICS so I could be wrong.

By default on ICS everything goes to the sd card. I believe there is a rooted option to move some apps to sd card, but I'm not sure. check out this thread. Starting on that page and for a little bit there is some discussion on it.
As I stated in that thread. I would like to know what apps people are installing that take up that much space.

pull down all the maps of the us, right there your 12gb is gone. A bunch of forex trading apps, I have Root since last night.
I really need this stuff to install to the 32gb cards I have or this thing is going to be pretty useless to me real fast.

getting this rooted.
Actually rooting it was beyond simple, the real issue was with Java not being recognized by Windows, so I couldn't run ADB.
All it came down to was the Environment Variable, once set it could see
the application and load the usb drivers. Then after getting it loaded I had to play with it, so went to sleep got up a hour later to go to work hehe.
Anyway thanks for the responses, this forum has been a God Sent!

Nope, some of the data from the apps are stored in /root/data/data.... You'll need root to move them (in our case ICS, in gingerbread you were able to do this unrooted). Did it work nordis?

Sorry was going back n forth between work and home.
I have a couple of them pulled down, all with very similar names.
A couple look really promising. I will post it once I'm finished but it looks
like the majority of these will allow me to move everything that I want to
move off of the internal storage and on to the SD card.
Well all except the XDA forums, for some reason those all state internal only.
Not a big deal though. If I can move the GPS apps off the internal storage, and
my ForEx apps I think I'm good.

Apparently some rocket scientist over at Asus decided that on a 16GB Base System that it was more than enough storage space to do anything anyone could want, and that the external storage would only be to transfer files to an from the device.

I literally wont be able to use these systems with in a couple of days from now.
Not being able to save application data on a storage drive has to be the single most asinine thing I've ever see a electronics manufacturer do. This is really a deal breaker now. If I'm unable to get this data from point A. to point B. and still be able to access it from with in the applications, these things are useless!
This is not a Opinion, this is a requirement for me.
If there was a big disclaimer some place that said HEY YOU REALLY ONLY HAVE ABOUT 12GB OF SPACE TO WORK WITH, AND AFTER THAT YOUR S.O.L! I would have moved right past these.
I just don't even know what to do now, Play Frisbee with these things or something I guess, on the way back to the store!

So, I'm guessing the apps didn't work. Suggestion why don't you just download the maps for your current State, there's really no need to download all the maps from USA, if you're not using them everyday. If you ever need to go to another state just download the maps for that state before going. This will help you save some space. You could also consider getting the 32GB version. The only way to fill the 12gb of free space is installing about 15 Dark Meadows apps (approx. 800MB each). The larger size regular games (non THD) take around 50-100 MBs, meaning that you have space for 120 games (12GBs). This would be completely ridiculous since no one plays that much games, I have about 10 installed right now and I only play like three of them (and I'm a gamer).
Unused data should be freed, if you don't want to lose the data on those apps you barely use you can run Titanium backup to back up your data and transfer the data to your pc for later use if needed. Every media you have (videos, photos, music, etc.) you can store them in the external SD card.
Still I understand your frustration, we should be able to transfer stuff to our card without any hassle. AFAIK this isn't just an ASUS problem but an overal ICS problem.

I did for just my state an the surrounding states I live near.
For the past couple of days I had been looking at running some small app on the SD card, they jump you through hoops and loops going through some partition process for the Micro SD card.
However I think I can do this right on a Windows 7 system with the Drive Management utilities built into Windows, and a Micro SD to USB reader.
Which I already have, I used for my sons DS way back, I put the card in it, through it in the system, it see's it, and tells me that it can be read, formatted, partitioned the whole 9 yards. So I will try it at work today and let you know how it turns out. If this can be partitioned this way, and then use one of these apps L2SD or something like that then it's a very simple solution.
Sorry I will post the exact name of the app I was looking at once I have tested this if it works. Along with detailed instructions.

Hi,
I'm linked and you can set it up to use the SD Card as the default for downloads now.
First things you need to do this.
You have to be have Root access on your device before you can do any of this. You have to make sure you go into settings on your device and Enable USB Debugging before you start any of this.
1. You need to partition your Micro SD Card. I used the a SD to USB Adapter, and Partitioned my 32GB Card the SD Card on a Windows 7 system as follows.
Set the 1st partition to 1GB. Set the second partition to use the remainder of the card. Download "EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition" it's free, you pull it down from www.download.com
2. You need a boot loader this is what that 1st 1GB partition is for. I used
bootice you can download it from here free http://code.google.com/p/grub4dos-ireneuszp/downloads/detail?name=bootice_0.9.2011.0512.rar
This is all you need to do with this app. Run Bootice, go "Parts Manage" > "ReFormat USB disk" (don't worry, it won't "format" the USB) > choose the dropdown option for your new first partition > click "Set Accessible" and it's done already! After that you can just click cancel/close/etc.
3. Download and run Link2SD from the Android Market, you can actually do this step first. Also this app is free.

This guide shows you how to move apps, No proprietary system apps, but those are note the ones you really have to worry about taking up space anyway. It also shows you how to go into the Link2SD settings and make your Micro SD Card your default download location from places that auto install applications like the Android Market. Very nice, this was exactly what I needed, I'm very pleased with this so far.
I have to give another thank you to jgaf for this, he pointed me in the direction of the Link 2 SD software in the first place, very much appreciated!

Done, I posted it in the main Q&A section. Cleaned it up a bit, added a couple of lines where I thought people may have some questions. I hope it's pretty straight forward for everyone. I went through all this like a breeze when I partitioned my card this way, hopefully every one else will as well.
Get the 32gb version of the 300.
If you can fill up 30gb with apps, you need to learn to not keep everything you don't really use.
Put your music, movies, and photos on the Sd card, you won't have a problem with app space.
The 32gb version is only $20 more. It's not like you can't afford it.
Wasn't aware of it at the time, and they don't offer it at Best Buy
When I purchased the ones I was getting I just went to Best Buy so I could get them right then.
Didn't want to wait or order them off the net, and all that Best Buy sells apparently is the 16GB version. I wasn't aware at the time that there even was a 32GB version.
However I would fill that up eventually as well. It's just not good business marketing to make a device with such a limitation in the first place. You should be able to download, and install apps where you want them and need them.
Anyway situation is resolved for me now I'm happy.

Hi... not sure if this is the correct area to post this, sorry if it isn't. Looking for some insight on some SD CARD issues.... been on Google all day with no luck. Here's my situation:
Recently bought an Asus HD Pad tablet. I read that the max card it'll hold is 32 GB but also read of people that have used 64 without a problem. Since that was something that I was able to do on my tab 2 I went ahead and bought a Kingston 64 GB SDXC. Before formatting to Fat32 I just placed it in and it was recognized just fine, with the full storage amount available and everything. Yesterday I started putting some movies on it but even though the files transfered fine once I went to the tablet they were there but the movies wouldn't run, like if the files were corrupted. From there I assumed I was not gonna dodge the format to Fat32 so I went ahead and did it...I transfered 3 out of 5 movies fine but when trying to add the other two I would gt the error saying that the properties of the file couldn't be transfered. I read up a bit and learned that FAT32 is a bit more limited as far as transferring certain properties from files than NTFS. So I formatted to NTFS. Put all 5 movies and they worked just fine. After this I decided to transfer about 8 gigs of music and some pictures.... they apparently transfered fine but when I go on the tablet and access the music and pictures folders it says NO FILES Are in them. I go to storage info and it does reflect that the 8+ gigs on music and pics are beige used but the file explorer show the folders empty... the movies are still there. If I try to delete the folders from the tablet I get an error that it can't be deleted or permission denied (depending on which file explorer I use). If I connect back to the PC and click the folders I get an error saying the folder is corrupted and can't delete them either. I'm getting the feeling that the SD card was not working flawlessly from the get go but would sure appreciate any input, suggestions, ideas, etc... also wondering if it might be because the SD card size is too big for the tablet.

This issue you're having is definitely because of the size of the SD card. Most devices are not made to accept such a large one, and I bet you anything that if you get a 32g SD card, it'll work perfectly.

Yeah that's what I thought so.... question.... you think there might be a way to "shrink" those 64 Gb down to 32, so that the tablet thinks it's a 32?? just to test if that takes care of the problem before buying another SD?

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, there is!
I don't remember exactly how to do it, but I know this much - first, you need to put the empty SD card into your device. Then, boot into ClockworkMod. Navigate to the Advanced submenu. This is where my memory gets a little fuzzy, but I think there is a "Repartition SD card" option or something like that inside that submenu that, when used properly, can be used to completely resize an SD card.
I did this a good while ago, so that's why I don't remember that well, but hopefully it will work for you.
