Nexus S - ATT BEST RADIO FOR ICS - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's the best radio for the nexus s on att 9020a for ics...
I have the UCKE1.is that the latest and greatest. I would like the best 3g ,hspa and data speeds...

I'm using kb3. It rocks man. I had UCKE1 and it seemed very limited/restricted on both up/down, but kb3 is yielding 4.5 - 5MB down and up to 2.5MB up.

ATT has the same bands as Rogers in Canada right? So I could theoretically use those with rogers, correct?

Here's the thing I don't get. I've seen different people in multiple threads say they use KB3 with their Nexus S on AT&T but when I went and tried to flash kb3 onto my Nexus S I would not receive a signal at all. I live in North Dakota for what its worth. Does anything think that might have something to do with this?
I'm currently using UCKJ1 and it works. I would just like to be able to use one of the radios that aren't limited by AT&T.

flashing modems?

okay can i flash a 3g modem back on my captivate? and if so where can i find one i'm experimenting with alot of different roms but all the ones i'm using use HSDPA? not sure if i abbreviated that right but could someone explain the advantages of that to me because all the developers seem to favor those modems and ive found that when i'm traveling a 3g modem is much nicer and i prefer them so can someone please help me out?
Hspda IS 3g but faster. It basically is 3.5g or what ATT is now calling 4g. So if you have it, it is just a faster version of 3g for downloading and uploading speeds.

I'm looking for an older modem too. I've been trying to figure out why my battery life is horrible since going to Perception 10.3 and the next thing to rule out is HSDPA. Maybe the signal for that is low in my area. When i was on 2.1 I would get a day and a half on my battery but as soon as i flashed, I'm lucky to get six hours with zero use.
There's a stickied "modem" thread in the developers section. It has most if not all the popular modems in it. They can be installed via CWM. JK3, JK4, and Telus GT JL3 seem to be the most recent. I found Telus to be the best on my phone. Gave me better battery life as well. Many say the same thing about JK4 but it didn't do that for me. These are all I9000 modems but they also have the older modems as well.
I'd suggest switching to the KP1 modem. There was a comment earlier today of someone getting 25 hours and still having 50% battery left. I don't know how much is idle and how much is normal use.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
i found a site that gives the service mode code for disabling HSDPA. I ended up with dial-up data speeds using perception 10.3 and KP1 modem but your results may vary.

FYI, I like my JK4 modem, 20 hours of battery life and 4706kbps down and 1323kbps up while inside. And no, my wifi was not turned on.

I recently switched to Precision and am using the JK4 modem. So far it's very responsive. I'm not sure if this affects you but the ping time on it is fantastic. My market loads in seconds, while on Andromeda it took like a minute. I wasn't a huge fan of that rom. You should also look into the glitterballs kernel. I liked that one.

Currently AT&T flipped the switch on HSPA+ to keep people happy until the official launch of their LTE network this summer which will dwarf all other 4G networks that Sprint (WiMax), Verizon (LTE), or T-Mobile (HSPA+) have.

Throughout the past year AT&T has been updating their towers which is why lots of people have been noticing issues with connectivity and signal strength.

i9020a slow 3g speeds?

I just migrated from theN1 to the NS and my 3g speeds seem slow in speedtest. downloads are around 2000kbps which is usual for the rogers network in my area, but uploads are around 60-80kbps and pin times are almost 200ms. I'm using the Koodo version on the Rogers network.

Updating the baseband to KB3 or KD1 should fix up your upload speed.
Are those radios compatible with the 9020a?
Any links to them?

I've successfully flashed both of the following radios via fastboot onto my i9020a (after extracting the radio.img from the zip of course):
KB3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11742701&postcount=1
KD1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13315514&postcount=122
I flashed the kd1 radio and my ping has improved as well as download speeds. Upload is still stuck around 60kbps

Hmm that is strange, I was running cm7.0.2 with KB3 and KD1 and had normal 1.1-1.2mb upload speeds. Over on hofo there was a thread where quite a few folks were complaining about capped upload speeds with the NS, people were focused on the source of the issue being the KB2 radio, but it is seeming more like some sort of network issue in Quebec and Ontario as I have never seen capped upload speeds over multiple android phones here in Vancouver. It may be worth doing a nandroid backup, wipe and CM7 reinstall just for testing purposes though.
Here are a few threads that may be helpful:

I'll put my SIM back in my Nexus One and retest. That should rule out network problems.
This is clearly a local Montreal issue. I'm in Toronto this week and HSUPA is almost 1000kbps.
I am experiencing very slow 3g data speeds with my i9020a (AT&T US). I have never gone above 400kbs down on full bar 3g signal.
What's the deal here? I thought the i9020a was compatible with AT&T bands? 3g lights up, but data is just slow. My baseband after the 2.3.4 update is I9020AUCKD1.
Is there a radio flash I can do to get 3g speeds? If not, this thing is going back to Amazon. It's very annoying.
Just went to an AT&T store and they guy changed some settings on my account (I had a 4g plan with my Atrix). Initially, this resulted in faster speeds, but now they have dropped back down to like 300 kbs down on 3g and 100 up on 3g.
I'm so irritated with this. I'm most likely going to return it and go back to my Atrix. It sucks bigtime as I really like the Nexus S.
Is there anything else I can do to speed this thing up on AT&T? Surely there are others who have the i9020a on ATT in the US?

I too have an i9020a on ATT in the Denver Metro area - I applied the 2.3.4 update and saw abysmal upload and download speeds with the bundled radio. I flashed the KB3 radio and immediately saw improvement - consistant 2.0Meg down and 1.5 Meg up. I then went into the ATT store and switched my plan (was on an iPhone and thus had strange voicemail issues on the NS) and since, my data has been significantly slower (1.0 Meg down and .5 Meg up)...
I'm headed back there tonight to see if there is an issue in my account - otherwise, I'm going to start looking into the build.pref changes that others have referenced in the forums...

getting better up speed?

so I have this phone on ATT, and I switched from the atrix to this. I put the sim card from my atrix into this and i cant get anything above 100 kbps up, seems wayyy to slow...wondering if it has something to do with the throttling ATT did for the Atrix? I changed my phone on my online profile, but I don't know what else to do to get decent speeds...any ideas?
I dont believe the T-mobile nexus s supports At&t's 3g network. You're probably on edge

It's not the T-mobile version.... its the 9020A which works on ATT 3g.....
I hear that you will need to flash a new radio for the ATT version. I believe KD3 will help with your speed. Where did you get the NS?

Trading my Galaxy Note i717 for Skyrocket since Tmo HSPA+ unreliable...

So I was super excited when all of the news sites had breaking news about how the I717 Galaxy Note had a radio fix that allowed for it to work on Tmo bands. I paid my 600 bucks, got the phone, flashed all combinations, and got fantastic results (8Mbps down) when it worked, but then 500kbps down when it didn't (dependent on location). Need a dependable data connection for work, so I'm thinking of trading my Note for a Skyrocket.
After searching, and reading through the Tmo threads in this forum, there doesn't seem to be a conclusive answer as to whether or not the radio fix for Skyrocket is a sure thing. Does anyone have issues regarding data connection based on location? It seems like the TMO and ATT SII are the same hardware, so the radio flashing should be a true and complete fix right?
Thanks!
What shape is your note in.... New or slightly used?
used since last friday. Flip case + screen protector. Already have a buyer/trader lined up though Trying to see if it is even worth it to trade

Well they got the Note to work by flashing the T989 radios (Tmo SII) to it. It has the same processor, but data is not consistent.
I was hoping since the I727 and I989 are a lot more similar, I would have better luck. Guy is offering his Skyrocket + 350 for my note, so it seems like a small gamble since I can always resell the skyrocket if it doesn't work.

damn, that's exactly what i didn't want to hear
I'll try it out for myself since I'm getting such a good deal on the S2 and see if my luck improves. If not, I guess I'll sell that too
edit
Got the SG2 I727 today. Rooted it, but still waiting on unlock code
Once I get unlock code, I'll try to update radios to see if that works
if not, I'll flash some skyrocket roms (any suggestions?)
If all else fails, I'll flash some Tmo Roms
Why not just get a T989 if you want to use it on T-Mobile?
i have the tzones 5.99 plan, this gives me unlimited internet for 5.99
just wanted to update everyone. I am now skyrocketing on Tmo
Flashing radios onto stock rom did not work
Tried out a few skyrocket roms with limited success
Juggernaut + Faux kernel + vk1 = perfect. Overheating and battery issues though
You should be able to flash TMobile radios on stock ROM no problem. That's what I've always used and get decent speeds.

What combination is suggested to get T-Mobile 4G on the East Coast?

As the title says! Now by combo im referring to ROM + RADIO + KERNEL!
A good example would be tspx23's [Combination juggernaut 4.1/faux kernel NOT overclocked/KL1 Radio] which gets 4G on the West Coast.
The phones been out for a while so i'm just trying to gather info before I buy the phone tomorrow. Thanks again!

Not to be daft, but if you're going on T-Mobile why are you bothering with a Skyrocket? Yes I know you can get it to work on T-Mobile, but unless you're getting a SPECTACULAR deal on an unlocked Skyrocket or you absolutely need a SD Card, why not just get the Galaxy Nexus? It has a better screen, nicer physical profile (IMO) and it's the current flagship Google device, meaning you'll get all the updates before everyone else, not to mention it's only $350 and a truly global phone. My wife has it on a monthly 4G plan and at times I get jealous of it (except for the times when she has an Edge connection while I have HSPA+, but that's a carrier issue, not a device one.)
Just throwing that out there..

Should just be as easy as flashing the blaze radio from the development thread. All roms should work, including the stock ROM. Flash the recommended kernel for that ROM, hint use ones the Dev told you works great. May have to configure the APN for TMobile if flashing the blaze radio didn't do it for you.

ROM has no effect radio is dependant on your specific area
Kernel won't change things up for your data speed either

Basically if you have the OPTION on your OWN to pick depending on the server your on I would suggest getting the own for your service like if you on AT&T go get the i727 if your on T-Mobile get the S2 cause the chances are your speeds are going to be best using the phone made for the server you have chosen. ME on the other hand had LIMITED option due to circumstances I was offered to be on sprint with a parent but was cut off half way of summer so i go back to my original parent who originally took me in T-Mobile and was stuck with a sprint phone the "Motorola Photon 4G" which thanks to a dev on XDA was allowed to unlock the SIM slot for DOMESTIC GSM (USA) with that in mind i liked it but data speeds were sad so i grabbed the i727 and unlocked it so here i am. I will give you output on the speeds once i find stable Combination.

I know that....I would all day anyday use a T mobile phone with T mobile or an AT&T phone with AT&T...especially with these sophisticated devices...I always see here people unlocked their skyrockets fine, flashed TMobile radios and report crappy data speeds and awful coverage...So I'm asking if anybody did use t mobile with skyrocket and data working fine (no crappy download or upload speeds)

I can't get a decent 4g download speed either. I'm currently on Embryo 5.1 and Kernel CYMBALINE-RD03-2.6. I've tested most of the radio that have been posted and still only getting around 550kbps dl and 25kbps ul on all of the radios. Getting over 10Mbps dl and ul on a tmobile phone next to it. Maybe my settings are wrong or something, but I've dial *#2263# and forced it to WDCMA 1700.
does anybody have GPS issues with lack of accuracy and long time to lock? i've never had good GPS performance with the skyrocket on tmobile radios. (i never ran this phone on att network and att radio, so i do not know if GPS performance is any good on ATT radio)
