[Q] titanium backup - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to have it auto install my, doing a lot of tapping.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App

A little unclear question, but will try to answer what I understood.
You can select from "Batch" (or just click on backup/restore tab and restore user apps (+data if you want). Or you can always extract from any nandroid backup you already had.
If by tapping you mean superuser permissions, you can always check remember permission for that app when allowing it.

By auto install do you mean instead of hitting install each time just have it done automatically? You need titanium pro

Does anybody know if there is a way to reload the arrangement of the application icons and widgets on each screen every time you do a wipe and fresh install? I know titanium backup allows you to save your applications so you don't have to redownload those everytime but it gets annoying to have to hold and drag all the icons to each screen everytime i try a new rom.

you can use titanium backup to backup launcher and then restore it
it will save your apps icons , but you have to re-drag your widget...

You really really should buy TB Pro but if you're really that cheap you can use this https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackupRoot
*if you didn't wipe /system and /boot it is NOT A FULL WIPE*

I have been using Titanium but the free edition for awhile.
Does TB Pro offer anything that McBackup Root does not?

Launcher blocked by wrong. No home screen anymore!
Hi,
I need your urgent help. I'd froze HTC Sense in Titanium backup because I was working with Go launcher, but today I disabled Go launcher in startup manager and I don't have any home screen now.
How can I restore one of them (Sense or Go launcher)? I don't want to hard reset my phone because I need my contacts, SMS, ....
My phone is rooted and I'd installed clockwork recovery.

Install Go launcher again using adb install command.
There could be many more ways to get it working, don't panic.

I installed ADW Launcher and launcherpro directly from android market.in status bar it shows that they are installed. but they didn't run and my screen is still blank.
I blocked the startup programs using Optimize ToolBox(15 functions)
is there a way to manage startup apps in recovery mode? Some thing like an script and so on.
------
update: Default pc connection mode of my phone is "Internet pass through" and I can't change it because it doesn't show connection mode screen. I think I can connect it to pc in recovery mode. I will search to learn how can I install go launcher using adb. hope it helps.
---------- Post added at 12:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:08 PM ----------
Oh no!!! I had disabled usb debugging too and can't turn it on. adb show "device not found error".
what I've done: boot in Fast boot USB. run "adb install filename.apk" and shows " device not found".

Backup/Titanium backup pro

I've got a question regarding titanium backup.
I've installed the ARHD 3.6.0 ROM. Installed all my apps, setup my desktop screen exactly how I want it & finally FROZE via titanium backup pro, all the applications I don't want showing in my drawer.
Can anyone give me a dummies guide on how to make a carbon copy of my exact setup please? So that when I install a new update like 3.6.1, I can just run that backup file and it will freeze all my unwanted applications & set my desktop back to how it was..
Do I need to buy a different piece of software to achieve this?
Thank you

Hi,
You just want to be able to port all your settings from one ROM to another.
It all depends on the "base" of the new ROM.
If it's the SAME "base" then you can just wipe your cache partition and dalvik, install the ROM and keep all your settings intact.
If it's a DIFFERENT "base",then there is no way of porting your settings. If you did,it would cause conflicts down the road.
With a different based ROM you can carry across your app DATA using Titanium Backup.
What you cannot do ,is carry across "system data". Again this will create conflicts after a while.Even with a same based ROM.
What you have done with your freezing and everything ,is change system data. This cannot be ported between ROMS.Sorry.
Hope all that makes sense.
Thanks for your response.
I find this incredibly hard to believe.. Im not saying what you are saying isnt true. But surely to god there must be some sort of backup software that can see that I've frozen things like "Dock Mode" & "Downloads" create an image of the files I've frozen, once I then install an update to my ROM I select that backup to run and & goes through & freezes the things I had frozen before...
Im freezing things out of my App drawer, so I dont have hundreds of icons in there... Im not freezing any system files or anything like that...
Its literally things like:
Adobe Reader
Connected Media
Dock Mode
Downloads
Flashlight
FM Radio
Friend Stream
Google Search
HTB HUB
HTC Likes...
etc etc. Just things that create icons with my app drawer that I'll never use.
Thanks
You can save desktop settings and data from apps when switching roms. You would have to freeze those apps again on a clean install of a new rom. Its the best and cleanest way possible to ensure the installation is running at its peak. Just freeze the apps you don't want again. I haven't tried an app that remembers and backs up frozen apps.
I think it will be easier if I get the Package Names of all the Apps I wanna freeze then everytime I install a new ROM, just 'pm disable' the list of package names via the terminal emulator.

Hi,
I know what you are saying.
You just want to get from one ROM to the next with the minimum of faffing around.
Like I said ,going to a new ROM with the same base is easy.
Otherwise it's a COMPLETE re-installation.
On another note ,if you look on mike's [OP] just above the changelog section, there is a thing called "ROM CLEANER"
I have not used this, but I believe you can remove any apk or app you do not want to use ,BEFORE the installation.

that is what I want exactly. Titanium should remember what has been frozen and freeze them next time when I flashed a new ROM.
Any other tools can do this?
This should not be difficult to implement. Any other tool can do this?

In the premium version there is a setting that says Auto-Sync TB settings. Tick this. Then follow this guide and you will Freeze all the apps you had no matter how many Roms you change.

For what you want a nandroid backup is much easier. Just go to recovery and make a backup. If you want to restore just superwipe and restore the backup from recovery again, and everything will be exactly in the state as when you made the backup.

Upgrade launcher? in custom ROM

Hello!
This is my first post so please don't throw stones on me. I was interested if, for example I run CM7, how can I replace the built in Launcher? it has ADW but it's outdated, so I want to put in for example the latest version.
As I see, if I install launcher for example X on the phone, this will be installed over the built in one. You know what I mean, the bulit in is there running and my new launcher is there to... is it possibile to remove the original one and put a new one in?
I don't think it's possible because it's essentially the same as a stock launcher, you can't just remove it and have nothing there. This is what I believe to be true anyway.
As you know, you can run another launcher over the top, why don't you just do that? It doesn't cause any problems for you.

Thank you...
I don't want to do that because the RAM. This is the main reason... as I saw I got only 128 which is almost insufficient for running any other app on the phone...
You can try intalling a new launcher then uninstalling the system launcher.
Or you can install a new launcher as a system app. And uninstall system launcher.
Or install a new launcher as a user app and convert into system app and uninstall system launcher.

I'll make a back-up and than see if it boots to flash recovery... of so... I'll try
thank you...
UPDATE
seems like I can't boot into CWM recovery with power + volume up + volume down
it says something like firmware upgrade failed... and dies... remove battery, put back and boot normaly... If I remain withouth a launcher and I won't be able to boot to CWM recovery to reinstall rom I'll softbrick my phone... :-S
Try using anttek app manager or titanium backup to freeze adw once you've installed a launcher you want. That will keep it out of memory, but it's easily undone.

Yap, you may want to try this, and since you're on CM7 I believe you have root acess.
So, install the launcher you want (it's not obligatory you use ADW)
Install Titanium Backup from the market.
Open TB and select 'Backup/Restore'
Scroll until you find the stock launcher (ADW in your case), select it and then choose Uninstall. You will have some warnings since it's a system app, no problem there.
After that just open the new launcher with the home button, it should do the trick
Cheers
I'll try this as soon as I got home...
But right now, how can I boot into recovery with clockworkmod?
I mean, from poweroff...
pressing those keys just boots into firmware upgrade...

In terminal emulator type "reboot recovery" without the quotes and hit enter. As long as you have busybox this should work.
Also, I said to freeze the app because it's easier to undo than if you uninstall it. Plus, you don't have to keep a backup on your SD.
Don't know about busybox. It said something about it while I rooted. Don't know if it's still there.
I'll try freezing it.
Still didn't figured out how to boot into recovery from power off.
Update:
Launcher frozen. Restarted. Everything works as expected. Maybe I'll uninstall it later.frozen with link2sd.
Same think can I do with android keyboard if I have another one?
UPDATE2:
If I don't have a launcher I can't even access terminal emulator. So, how to boot into CWM recovery from power off? Do I need to have USB cable in my phone connected to pc?

Can't help you on the recovery, sorry different device, I think it has a different way to boot :/
On the keyboard one, yes, you can do it to the keyboard also, but why deleting stock keyboard? It's good for having a backup when the custom fails.
But why do you lack a launcher? You should always have a launcher, of course without it you can't access anything.
You should first install the second launcher and then delete the first one, not the other way around :/

Yeah but I like to play safe so until I don't know how to boot into recovery I won't delete it...

You install another launcher BEFORE freezing the stock launcher.
Read my original post in this thread and you'll see that's what I wrote.
You'll need adb at this point. Install it, install the driver for your phone, use adb to push a launcher apk to either /system/app or /data/app. Also, you can use adb to enter recovery by typing "adb reboot recovery" without the quotes.
it's just that I don't trust myself
I've installed another launcher already...
Now... can you be a bit more open for the ADB thing?
I'm at work, here I can't install usb debugging...
as I understand, with ADB I got something like a terminal or thing like that and I cand send command to the phone

Correct. Install adb (google is your friend). Find the usb driver for your phone and install it on your home computer. Connect your phone through usb. Open a command prompt and cd (change directory) to the adb folder. Type adb devices. If a device number is returned, you can go from there. There are tons of useful commands.
One thing... I have u8180. But about phone says u8160. Since rooted and cm7 it's recognized as u8160 even by Google play. Hm as I see there is a work around. U8180/u8160 shares the same hw. So if adb will recognize it as one of them it will be OK?

[Q] Stuck on a launcher

I just flashed a firmware that came stock with Holo Launcher HD launcher, and I have used this ROM before and successfully killed it and replaced with Trebuchet or TouchWiz. Well, now I killed it in Titanium Backup, and it still shows up when I press home, completely intact. However, It is no longer in the Titanium or Settings menu Apps list, and when I try to install a different launcher it does not ask me which I would like to set as default when I press home. I would just clear the defaults but like I said it doesn't show up in any Apps list on the system or Titanium. So now I am stuck on junk Holo Launcher HD launcher with seemingly no possible alternatives. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The APK is missing. And I only have about 40 APKs so I wouldnt miss it if it was there. Looks like Im going to have to reflash.

Cannot update sucessfully to anything

Software version 1.46.498.1 Android 2.3.4 Sensation 4G Rooted S-off HBoot 1.18.0003
First I tried flashing some roms with Jelly bean - Things seemed to go OK then after startup screen it freezes then reboots on the "instruction screen" it reboots to the desktop and the app button will pull up icons ,then freezes and reboots. I tried some different roms in different versions of android and the exact thing keeps happening. I looked everywhere but couldn't find the answer to if I need to have the same android firmware version on my phone as the rom I was trying to flash. I tried to install 4.0 but it did the exact same thing the same way. All attempts to upgrade in any way have failed.
I have tried full wipe, wiping cache & delvin cache. I have tried not doing that & all the same. I have a nandroid backup thank goodness that I have reinstalled 20 times trying to get anything to work.
Solution found: Flashed CM 9 and the google app. No titanium backup. I installed it but no Icon.
Still trying
I put PG58IMG.zip on my SD, ran bootloader and it readsG58IMG.zip No image file
Also in pink in the top left read LOCKED is this it? I have rooted my phone.

Try to clear settings for titanium backup, uninstall it and install it again.Restart your Launcher and clear your Launcher settings if it is necessary.Check if the app is frozen or you have hide it from your Launcher.
Inform us if it helps you!
**Before you post try to reboot your device. If you had it installed on your system partition reboot into recovery and clean your dalvik-cache / It would be nice to clean your cache partition too**
I only see a couple options for the launcher and showing/not showing icons isn't one of them. It says pro key installed but can't start it. Under app management all fields are darkened except uninstall.
Funny, the unpaid version works fine.

The "Titanium Backup PRO Key" for titanium backup is a key that unlocks the free version of the application to pro version. So it is natural the "Titanium Backup PRO Key" has no data to clean! You have to install the free version first!

Backup the launcher you are using. If it's a TW rom, backup the TouchWiz Home app, then when install new rom (provided it's another TW rom) restore the data only from that app. I do this all the time on Omega roms.

No, but did you reboot? Most of the time a reboot is required when restoring the launcher. Just to get clear, the app is Touch Wiz Home 4.2.2 I9505ZHUDMl1 or similar. Back it up. Then when a new rom is installed or when just going to recovery and doing a full wipe you boot back up. Install TB from playstore. Restore all normal apps. Then, restore data only of TouchWiz app. The phone will prompt saying to the effect of when a system app is restored a reboot is recommended. Then reboot. All apps should be in their place, however widgets will have to be manually placed again. This only works for apps, not widgets. But for me this is still a way quicker way of setting up a new rom to my way of liking.
