[Q] I need some answers about Nexus S - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I bought Nexus S from second hand recently mostly because it will get official ICS support from Google.
So because it's second hand buy, I really don't know if I'm using original bootloader, kernel, radio etc.
It's rooted (because I have Superuser app), I think it has stock 2.3.6 android (build number GRK39F) and kernel version 2.6.35.7-gf5f63ef, [email protected]#1.
Can someone who use stock android and original kernels confrime to me that this is right version?
I really want to update to ICS using incremental update which I found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445635) but I'm affraid to don't screw something because of bad experience when I radio bricked my desire
Can I update it to ICS or I need to do unroot or something?

Just download the correct stock ICS rom for your device (if it is I9020T or I9023) ,put it on the SD root and then flash it using the stock or CWM recovery and be done with it (if you need the ICS)

most likely you won't be update by OTA because you are rooted (system file verification will fail)
just download stock ICS ROM and flash it ...

Ota will install fine if its a stock rom with just root. The update script basically checks that everything that should be there is there . If there is something else in there like su it don't matter.

flashing a new rom is the best way to go if you have cwm installed already

I succesfuly flashed ICS and first impressions are very good.
But I think I lost recovery...

flash a CWM recovery via adb , or there is TWRP recovery in DEV section , which is very good .

[Q] How to go from MIUI to stock ICS on i9020T

Okay the subject is clear. I upgraded from nexus one to a used nexus s today with miui installed on it. And as i saw billions of threads all around the web about bricked phones after update to ics i thought it would be good to ask.
I have miui and i just want to upgrade to stock ICS and want to keep the root. Please tell me if there is some special instructions i should follow.
Thanks!
Since you are coming from Nexus One, I guess there is nothing special.
* Get the full OTA ROM for your phone model from the link in my signature
* Flash it via CWM recovery
* Get the updated su and Superuser from here (download the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip one)
* Flash it as usual
* Done!
Note: If you booted into ICS before flashing Superuser package, you will have to re-flash CWM recovery again because the recovery will be reverted back to the stock one.
So there is nothing special that i have miui thing installed. I will just install IC via CWM like i have ginger bread on my phone.
Is there an easy step by step guide for all of this, i didn't make an update for a long while so i kind of forgot things?
thanks!
just flash a rooted stock rom, if you install stock then you will lose root and recovery!
okay i updated just using the stock 4.0.3 rom. it was stuck with the dead android screen. then i used recovery to flash the same rom. it is working flawlessly. i had to install just the cwm recovery. other than that i didnt loose my root.

[Q] Stock recovery question for OTA

I found This topicon how to get back to stock recovery. My question is wouldn't you have to be on stock rom and the stock hboot for the OTA to work? or the HTCinstaller dosen't car just as long as the stock recovery is still intact?
I dont see the point, but thats just me.
New update comes out =new custom rom (stock or not stock) on xda
just backup important data before flash. some roms dont require a wipe if u r coming from the same rom 1 version under.
check rom threads. IMO no need for OTA.

Back to stock after perm root: how?

I've got to sell my Sensation XE. I've done S-OFF, perm root, 4ext recovery, firmware update to install ICS by Android Revolution HD. Now I would like to delete perm root and install a stock rom, so the person that buy my phone can do OTA update without provlems. How can I achieve this? Thank you

Download Ruu on your computer , connect your phone to usb ,run RUU.
stock recovery image file needed
Hi, needing a bit of help here to restore stock recovery on my Sensation so I can catch OTA ICS update from Three uk. Phone is rooted with revolutionary custom recovery. I need a copy of image file for my software version: 1.45.771.5 so I can use Android Recovery Manager.
All help greatly appreciated!!!!
Any stock recovery should do the job, it doesn't matter whether it's from a 3 ROM or not.
Can your not stick the OTA .zip on your SD card and flash it via the custom recovery, though? I've done that via CWM on a couple of other phones.
Thanks for the reply Rusty, unfortunately had no luck using both methods you suggest, must be doing something wrong

revert back to stock to update to ICS

Hi , few months ago i rooted my phone ( did not install any custom rom) only the clockwork recovery mod (somethin like that) i think , so now i wanna go back to stock so i can install ICS, i download my RUU and a pg58IMG.zip file(what is that for) , so the problem is that my phone is connected in charging mod to my pc , and debugging is on , but adb devices cant read it , what should i do ?
Please any additional info would be appreciated , thank you alot
as far as i know, if you want to install stock htc ics, you just download the original RUU, run setup and plug in your phone, you don't need clockwork recovery or anything else like that, just follow the steps from the HTC RUU setup...
If you have received the FOTA updated just changed the recovery to stock HTC Recovery. And flash or run the OTA update. I use this guide to get back to stock HTC Recovery it may also help you [GUIDE] Get Stock Recovery/Install OTA Updates without losing data.

Urgent help - Is possible to do this?

Since my AT&T ICS 4.04(final update) Atrix 2 won't pass beyond the M logo (have been flashed like ten times), I need someones help.
I can't downgrade to GB because would brick the phone forever or upgrade to a newer version. Or flash a custom ROM because the phone is not rooted and doesn't have any custom recovery tool installed.
So, I was thinking, maybe if I could flash an already rooted system and a custom recovery using RSDLite, could boot into the custom recovery, install a custom ROM and see if I can fix my phone.
Or maybe flash(RSDLite) a backup(or only the files need for this purpose) made by any user of the forum.
Is that possible? Please help.

It would be better to ask all the questions in one thread itself, rather than making new ones each time for a newer question.
RSDLite can't flash files which aren't signed by Motorola, hence no pre-rooted or custom recovery installed ROM can be flashed this way, since they won't have Motorola signatures.
