MT4GS not remembering ringtones - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

So for a few weeks now, my phone has been unable to remember the ringtone I set for either SMS or phone calls. every time I set it it works, but as soon as I reboot the phone or unmount the sd card then remount, it forgets both tones and picks one of the songs on my sd card as the new tone.
I first noticed it after I was having some problems with btunes (my preferred music app) crashing, so I decided to clear the cache and data in Media Storage from the "Manage applications" menu. I learned to do this from the developer of another music app I had problems with, and thought it was worth a try.
ever since then, i've had the problem. I don't know why. To be fair, I MIGHT have had the problem before that, since I had only had the phone for 2 weeks at that point and didn't pay attention to it due to finals, so I wasn't doing much rebooting, and anyway the ringer volume was probably off the whole time. My memory is fuzzy about the ringtones working before that point. It was definitely happening before I rooted though, so I know that's not the problem.
anyway, help? on a side note, it always seems to automatically pick the same 2 songs for the 2 replacement ringers once I reboot. I'm not sure why, especially since they're not in the media/audio folder anywhere, and don't show up as potential ringtones when you look in any "pick ringtone" menu.

If you are rooted I would say reboot into recovery and clear dalvik-cache.
Sounds like that's where a setting is hiding.

I had this problem too when I was on Bulletproof 1.0, then when I switched to 1.1 it stopped. I don't think it was necessarily rom related, but maybe something to do with the wiping when changing roms.

I've had my (rooted stock ROM) MT4GS forget its notification settings a couple times - for me they usually stay set for a while, but after some time and/or reboots will come back wrong (not always the same wrong either- a few times it has picked notifications from my music folder, other times from the default sounds).
The problem seemed to start after I put another Android device (CM partition on my Touchpad) on my Google account, so I've been operating under the assumption that it is some kind of bug with settings synchronization. Unfortunately, it isn't very repeatable so I've never pinned the behavior down exactly.
I don't know if the issues are related, but gathering information on similar problems will hopefully let someone zero in on the issue.

the settings sync issue is worth checking, especially since I still have my Transform Ultra that I sometimes have turned on at home on wifi. I checked it, and the ringers were set on something else, So I matched them to the MT4GS and we'll see what happens.
I'm not sure that's the culprit, though, since this only happens when I restart the phone or re-mount the card. seems like settings sync wouldn't be an issue there, though I may be wrong.

I have the same issue with MT4GS and mines is certainly not rooted yet. The phone is only a couple weeks old. But its annoying. Sometimes I don't even have to reboot, sometimes it randomly just happens. IDK what to think of it.

I always shut off settings sync during setup and this used to happen to me.

You mena the initial setup of the phone? and how did you stop it?

Yeah its the google "backup my device" crap malfunctioning. Its dumb because what do u want it to backup? Texts, logs... What does it backup? Apps and bullcrap. If u want to start over, y can't I install apps individually? Or just give me the lists of crap ur gonna reinstall on my phone and let me select what I want....
Anyways, turn it off, reboot, sync, before nandroid/rom flashing and then don't use it on fresh install.

ok, so what you're saying is, google's sync system is flawed so it periodically screws up the ringer settings on my phone, by attempting to "correct" them to the server information? why doesn't it just upload the knew info of the correct ringtone when I deliberately change it?

That's what she said... PRECISELY what I don't understand. It seems as though everythings good, you've set your phone up after a fresh install, and everytime you make changes it syncs and instead of uploading the new stuff, it downloads the old. It may be something we are doing wrong by hacking our phones and some setting somewhere is missing or a simple kernel command is confusing it or who knows... Maybe its google's fault... All I know is, its annoying. It should get rid of your issue.
On a side note, there may be some settings for this hidden in some settings you can only find via pc. Like buried in google voice or plus or chrome or some now defunct google product you can no longer log into... Perhaps some digging there. I've found little to no documentation on the phone end...

hmmm, well it can't be hacking, because this was happening before I had the phone hacked. also, oddly enough, I also have a different off line phone as a spare that's on the same android version, 2.3.4, yet does not have this problem. of course, that one's stock Android, not infected with Sense.....

Well... If it happened prior to hacking, then it's not google backup. So go with other possibilities... Phone is hosed... Sd card hosed... (Have u tried selecting various tones on card or in your system media folder within your phone?)... Or is that other phone ever on? Could be going back to that sync issue. Turn it on and then see if its connecting to wifi and syncing. Which ringtone r u stuck on?

My phone started doing this after I swapped SD cards with a larger one. I just had to go in, change it to something else, then change it back. Been working fine since.

I just went through this on my Thunderbolt.
It's usually an issue with corrupted contact or calendar.
To fix it you have to turn off syncing automatic. Then manually try syncing one by one all the Google services. When you get to the one that causes the force close, turn syncing off. Go to settings... applications... clear data and cache for the offending app, then clear data and cache for Google services framework... force stop them if they're running. Reboot your phone. Try syncing again.
That worked for me.

That's not reassuring - I had this problem earlier this week. It's the reason I was jumping back and forth between ROMs and bricking my phone in the process. Hahaha. No matter what I did the crashes would persist.
Anyways, my resolution was to do a factory reset since /data was the only partition that never got wiped when switching ROMs. I haven't had any issues since. I restored all my apps with data with TiBu. I left all the system settings alone and input my settings manually.
But, when I did notice these issues start occurring it was only after I got a random soft reboot. My phone was just sitting on the counter when I heard the bootup sound.

Funny you mention this, because I noticed one of my contacts disappeared when I switched to this phone. Turns out two of my contacts somehow automagically merged together. It was still like that after I wiped /data, but I fixed it manually.
To the OP, it's something worth looking into. If it matters, the two contacts were my dad and bro. It's the same last name and the first names start with the same letter, but in no way are they similar.

Something is corrupting your calendar or contacts.
Do you know which is the culprit?
It's tedious, but if you do, go through each contact or calendar entry that syncs and find the offending one.
You didn't make it initially clear that you'd also turned off syncing and cleared the data in something beyond google services. If you skipped that, all you're doing is trying to repush the bad data on your phone back to the server, which pukes at the attempt and crashes your phone's services.

If you're coming from an HTC sense phone, I think the problem might be related to how it tries to link contacts. Every time I put a new install or rom on my Thunderbolt, the first thing the HTC sense stuff wants to do is link all my google contacts to the phone contacts. What's odd about that is the contacts on the phone come from Google in the first place, so what's the linking needed for?
Another thing I forgot to mention, the phone would crash doing basically anything with calls/SMS, and none of my services were synching properly. Only when I received a call or SMS would my GVoice SMS and GMail update.

I agree, it is an odd scenario. Even more odd, I was coming from pure Android with my Moto Droid on CM7. I never had a phone with an overlay nor did I link multiple Google contacts together, and I hadn't encountered this problem before when switching between ROMs on that or my NOOKcolor. This is actually the first Android device I've had where the contacts could be saved on the phone, but I still prefer to sync everything to the cloud.
I'm just glad my phone is running smooth again and hope the same for the OP.

[Q] Voice Search Resetting

So I'm having a really strange issue. I got my Atrix 2 a few weeks ago after owning the OG since it launched. I'm currently running 2.3.6 Stock Deodexed installed via CWM restore in bootstrap. Everything is working fine, except this: the Voice Search app, which I use a lot, continually reverts itself to default settings. As long as the app is running, it behaves normally, but when I kill the process, reboot the phone, or too much time passes, it seems to wipe out its own data. As a result, nearly every time I use it, I get this first run dialog asking me if I want to enable personalized recognition and a tutorial overlay. I've selected both options multiple times and the issue persists. A few things:
1) I'm not sure if this has been happening since the beginning, because I've been rooted and deodexed in some form or fashion since the 2nd day I had it. I don't remember initially having a problem, though. Maybe someone running straight stock with no mods could test this?
2) I use local data encryption for both the SD Card and the app storage, as required by my corporate exchange server. That's the only thing I can think of that might be causing this.
3) I've reinstalled the app multiple times.
4) It seems like Voice Search can't be moved to the SD card.
Anyone else having this problem?

s a matter of fact, I have had it happen to me a couple of times too. I'm running lfabor's SC_V5 Update 2 though.
Now I shall reply to you statements / questions:
When I was running stock 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 I didn't have this issue.
I do not use encryption as its not required for my corporate sync (nor is my phone a company phone)
I have not tried to reinstall it, as I dont use very often, and only had to he issue happen a couple of times. This is also because lfabor placed it in the
system directory, and I've been to lazy to move it out.
The reason it can't be moved to SD is because the SD storage has to be enabled by the developer of the app.
Also note I am using swiftkey X for my keyboard, but if you are having issues with stock I don't think swiftkey is to blame.
I have not
I have had this issue TONS of times on a 100% stock not even rooted phone. I think there is just something screwed up, I dont think it's because of anything you did. My SD card is not encrypted, and I am also using Swiftkey X (but I doubt its swiftkey X). Infact I think it even used to happen before I started using swiftkey x.
I have the same issue, and I'm also using Swiftkey X. I'm sensing a pattern...
While I haven't empirically tested enough, I think the voice search might be resetting every time that Swiftkey gets updated (like with new language files, since that seems to happen quite often).
I'll try to keep track to see if there's a link there.

I'm not using SwiftKey, but I do use the ICS keyboard, so I tried uninstalling it and freezing Swype for good measure. It didn't seem to affect things, at least on my end.
I'm having the same problem. I installed the swiftkey x keyboard to give it a try but uninstalled it when I didn't like it. Have had the problems even since the uninstall. Currently using the stock keyboard with stock rom rooted.

Missing data after reboot? Help!

Hi guys, i was playing a game called F18 Carrier Landing, when my phone froze. I long held the power button so that it could reboot. After it rebooted, i unlocked it, and it gave me the interface as if i freshly flashed a new rom or i did a factory reset (the interface asking about google and setting up accounts). So, i completed that and once my home screen popped up, i faced a few force closes, from titanium backup, my anti-virus software Avast, and various other applications. I was very freaked out at this point. I remember reading something about fixing permissions if i faced constant force closes, so i rebooted to recovery and fixed permissions. Booted up fine, still missing data, but no force closes. But my google maps does not seem to work, i open it and it opens to the orange-ish checkerboard backing, but then force closes. I'm not exactly sure what to do at this point. Can anyone advise me on what to do or if this ever happened to them? For reference, i'm still on Froyo (don't ask why) 2.2.1, ROM's Audiophile Redux by Raver. If you require additional info to help me find a solution, i will gladly comply. Thanks!
EDIT1: I uninstalled my Maps with Titanium and restored a really old version from September of last year, and it seems to be working. Or atleast it opens and loads.
EDIT2: It seems to only load apps stored on my internal/phone storage. As i checked Applications in settings, the SD tab was empty as if there are not apps from the SD card installed, what can i do about this?
This has happened to many of us on GB. Crazy it happened on Froyo. You are going to need to reinstall your missing apps. If it is similar to what happened to us your phone factory reset on it's own.
Alright thanks, when it happened i thought it was a pretty serious problem, but as i restore my apps from Titanium, i realize it's not that bad. Just glad to know i wasn't alone on this ordeal. I plan on hopping onto AOKP or maybe MIUI when my contract ends, this phone is just to valuable to me at the moment. They both seem so fast and amazing, plus AOKP has themes. K, so quick question, do you know the reason behind this, i mean, is my SD corrupted or something? I can still play the music and the videos from it on my phone, but i don't understand why it wouldn't read the apps on the SD.
None of us have nailed down the cause unfortunately.
Thanks anyways, up and running with most of my apps back. Gotta get around to flashing a new ROM someday. So many good one's coming out!

[Completed] Audio Adverts when android is sleeping

Hi everyone,
At a bit of a loss here. My gf has a nexus 5 running android 6 and she keeps getting loud adverts playing when her phone is sleeping.
It is intermittent, no set pattern and as soon as the power button is pressed there is no trace of anything.
I have googled excessively and can find no one else who has experienced it.
I have removed lots of her apps that could be suspect but today it happened and I heard it with my own ears. They appear to be targeted ads as it played an audio ad for a national car chip repair service.
Any help or advice welcomed.
Thinking of doing a factory reset of the phone.....

One way to find out which app is causing this is to go to Settings->Apps->Running and see what all apps are listed here.
Try looking uninstalling the user apps listed here one by one and check if the problem is fixed.
Normally it has to be a Game app or sth. like that.
Cheers.

I tried doing that, and nothing obvious was running. The only thing it claimed was running was Android Web View - which would make sense, the ads are probably javascript and HTML5 audio elements., but I could not see what was invoking the web view to open.
I did run a malware scan using malwarebytes for andorid and it ALWAYS crashed when scanning chrome, even after I cleared the chrome cache and data. Which made me suspect chrome was infact infected.
On a more depressing note, I did end up factory reseting the phone, and did a clean install, and installed her "vital" apps (to make sure it did not restore a "bad" application) and my gf has just alerted me to the fact it has begun speaking to her again! Arrghh.
I would of thought a factory reset would have removed all traces of this thing.
Would it be worth doing (the rather drastic) full factory reset, using the google provided factory images and ADB/Fastboot?

The odd thing is there is NO notification at all. You can just hear the advert, and once the screen comes on, there is no sign of it ever happening!
No notifications, no open applications in the app draw. Very annoying!

Well,that's strange.
Only thing that is left to try is a full reset, as I guess the media is stored somewhere in the internal storage and is played by some adware.
Just back up only the essential folders ( like DCIM,Music, etc.) and nothing more from your internal storage prior to a full reset.
That should solve the problem.
Cheers.

MMS and Notification issues on Note 10+

Hello, I've had the unlocked Note 10+ for a few weeks and have had chronic issues since day one and not really sure what to do about it. A lot of the issues seem to get worse over time. Not sure if the problems are related, but it feels like it.
First, I have MMS issues mostly with any other app but the built in messaging app and even that one isn't perfect. Using Textra for instance will get me MMS timeouts sending and receiving and sometimes messages don't send or come in. This seems to happen with or without wifi enabled.
Next, I'm getting delayed notifications on many if not all apps. Notifications will some in here or there, then all of a sudden I'll get all the notifications for the day all at once. So suddenly my phone is going crazy receiving 50 notifications from different apps all at once. Related to that, if I get a notification and click on it to open the related app, often nothing happens. Then like an hour or more later the app I clicked on for the notification will pop open in the middle of doing something else. It will also get hung up installing or updating apps. A reboot will usually clear this but at some point it get's stuck again and will take hours to install an app if it does at all.
I've done all the usual things like disabling battery optimization for the apps in question, set the phone to high performance mode. Uninstalled and reinstalled things, cleared the cache partition, reset network settings, checked APN settings, even now have factory reset the phone, twice, got a new SIM card. Talked to Samsung and they tell me I need to mail it to their repair depot in Texas if I think it's hardware.
So no idea where to go with this. Seems hard to believe it's a hardware problem and sending the phone away for a week or more doesn't seem like a great option, especially when they might just send it back as it works OK for awhile after a reboot.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
After you reset the phone, did you install apps manually from store or let it go off a backup?
Also, just an idea but maybe the tower servicing you is acting up.. Unless it's been happening in multiple areas.
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
That is a good point, I did let it install automatically from the Google backup. It wasn't a true restore the way I would generally think of it as everything was installed from scratch, but maybe some settings are getting put back that are messed up. It happens out of the are as well, but I did talk to my carrier and they claimed the did some stuff at the tower that might help. I usually think that means they go get coffee then tell me to reboot the phone. Maybe this evening I'll try a fresh install with no restore. Sort of sucks of course as that's a lot more work to get going, but what the hell at this point. Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply. I have a note 10+ myself now unlocked and seeing some texting issues where I don't receive text or mms from Apple phones. Hasn't happened with Android to Android though.
Sent from my SM-N975U1 using Tapatalk
So none of that reinstall stuff helped me. On texting I finally tried the Google Messages app with chat features enabled when it was leaked. Messages alone didn't work, but enabling RCS did and now it actually works better than ever. I hate giving up on textra, but I like the sheer speed of sending giant MMS messages now.
On the notifications thing, the thing that finally got that working right was disabling the Google app. As soon as I did that, all is working as expected. Of course that breaks some Google stuff, but at the moment that's what I have to do to make this work. Even upgrading to Android 10 betas didn't allow me to turn that back on.
